its my second year living here in Toronot and i had always been interested on having a table or a booth in one of the cons, But i don't want to try in the big ones without building up a decent ---- ermmm reputation? so i was interested on going to the unplugged expo this year-- but your review made me a little uneasy so-- should i give it a try in other cons?
Kiriska: We’ve previously reblogged two posts regarding Unplugged Expo, but neither were written by me or Becca, so if you have specific questions about the con, you should ask the original authors of those posts instead.
Still, I think the important thing to gain from small cons prior to jumping into bigger ones is experience, not reputation – and technically, that can be gained at any convention, good or bad. Obviously, better conventions provide better experiences, and you’ll learn either way, so if you have other options, absolutely prioritise the ones with better reputations.
And if not? Well, only you can decide whether or not you wanna take a chance. I don’t have any personal experience with Unplugged Expo.
Artist reviews of conventions are incredibly helpful, but they are always just someone’s opinion and their personal experience. Do your own research to supplement what you glean from someone’s review. Take note of the things they said were bad and try to find out if the convention has taken any steps to change that.
Hope that helps!
Nattosoup: A bad convention sales wise can be a GREAT convention for talking to other artists. The year I tabled at Interventioncon, I sold $20 worth of merch the entire weekend- and that $20 had already made its way around the alley (no one was buying except other artists), but the lack of sales gave me time to talk to other artists in a relaxed environment. It sucked that I spent so much money to stay in DC for a con, but many of these artists are people I see regularly at shows and still talk to.
We don’t have as many indie con reviews here (I think I’m one of the few artists who writes indie con reviews), but with indie cons, don’t expect to make money. Go in with your mini comics and anthologies, bring things to trade, and try to get up and explore the show. Indie cons revolve around community, and that won’t happen if no one leaves their table for fear of missing a sale. I hope some of our readers who live in Toronto can help answer your questions a little more thoroughly!
