Claire watches Asian dramas - Tale roundup

The two most recent supernatural rom-dramadies I’ve watched are both well worth the time spent with them, and both happen to have “Tale” in the title!

Tale of Arang (aka ”Arang and the Magistrate”) 2012 아랑사또전

What’s not to like about this premise? Set in the Joseon era, a female ghost with no memory of how she died or who she was in life, attaches herself to a young, directionless nobleman’s son who happens to be able to see ghosts. He’s uninterested in the problems of others, alive or dead, and simply wants to find his missing mother. This Korean drama is 20 episodes long, each about 60-70 minutes in length, I watched it on Viki.com. The main couple have fantastic chemistry (played by Lee Joon-gi and Shin Min-ah), and overall the efforts of the cast make this drama very enjoyable and engaging, despite the laughably poor production qualities that plague numerous episodes.

Pros:

Female lead, the ghost Arang, is wonderfully independent and dedicated to finding her truths.

Male lead grows and changes, and respects Arang as an individual by the end.

He’s refreshingly non-toxic in his love for her, which is not always the case in the modern stories, let alone the period pieces.

Supporting characters are enjoyable, and the cheesiness is called out by other background characters when it gets too much.

I really enjoyed the mythology at play in this one - Grim Reapers are always fun characters to explore, and the Jade Emperor was charming!

Happy ending, in the very end.

Cons:

Prepare yourself for the worst production editing you’ve ever seen outside of a community college videography class:

Several scenes are just straight up MISSING their FX. As in, there’s a shot of a portal to the afterlife....and it’s just the background set >.< There’s another scene where a cave is supposedly collapsing...and there’s a shot of a modern ladder leaning against the cave set wall. (Eat your heart out, Starbucks cup in a Game of Thrones episode!)

Makeup is also inconsistently applied to ghost/reaper characters, and there are a few continuity things with other people’s costumes, but this is only minorly distracting and isn’t really too bad.

The villains of the piece are chewing all the scenery exposed by the lack of special effects. Especially the supernatural Big-Bad. DRAMTIC. EYE-ROLLING. FOR DAYS.

Despite the flaws in production and direction, I really, really enjoyed this show! The ending felt a bit rushed and was a bit shaky on touchdown, but it landed. The chemistry between the main lead couple made it all work, and the supporting cast (especially the Jade Emperor and shaman) also helped hold it all together.

Tale of the Nine-Tailed 1938 (2023) 구미호뎐 1938

Whether or not you’ve seen the first season (Tale of the Nine-Tailed), you should definitely watch this follow-up series! The first episode quickly introduces the characters and tone, no prior knowledge needed to enjoy this supernatural dramady. There is romance, but it’s a side dish to the main plot, which is that Lee Yeon, the titular nine-tailed fox and former mountain god, gets thrown back in time to 1938 and must defeat enemies from his past and the humans’ present to return to 2020-ish and his life with Nam Ji-Ah. On Amazon Prime, the show is 12 episodes long, each one 50-70 minutes long. Go watch it!!

Pros:

Lee Dong-Wook revises his role as Lee Yeon. That’s reason enough to watch it. For that matter, basically all the supporting cast of supernatural characters revise their roles, and are just as good in this show as in the first series!

The humor is on-point. There are several moments of laugh-out-loud comedy courtesy of Lee Yeon and Koo Shin-Joo making fun of Lee Rang.

Strong, complex female characters, old and new.

LOVE the Korean mythology that this series explores, much like they do in the first one.

Exploring a moment in history that many Western audiences are ignorant of, this show is fun AND educational!

Exciting fight scenes, a variety of interesting set pieces for the conflicts.

Beautiful costumes and settings, you can tell the production team had fun with this one!

Cons:

It’s pretty cheesy at times, but it knows it and plays with it (so not really a con?)

The overarching mystery isn’t fully wrapped up at the end, though it’s clearly the end of the main plot arch. Setting up a third season????

There are a couple places where the tonal shifts are very abrupt, some of the character development seems a little too OOC.

Overall, none of the cons are very impactful for me, and I just really, really love the characters, time period setting, and fun scenarios the show takes us through. I think I liked season 1 better in terms of plot, but season 2 wins for style.

For several long, hot days in Florida, and then cool, fall days in Chicago, I let myself take my time reading The End of August by Yu Miri, translated by Morgan Giles. I had to. It's a book that's not challenging once you settle into its pace and form. Its repetitions of "inhale exhale" and "hana, dul, set" (one, two, three). Once you settle a little bit, too, into its family tree.

The core of the book is protagonist Yu Miri (how autobiographical this book is, I don't know), whose family comes from South Korea but who was raised in Japan, engaging two mudangs who will help her engage with her family's spirits and put them to rest. After she attempts to run a marathon in hopes of connecting to her grandfather, Lee Woo-Cheol, and discovering why he was the way he was, the reader and Yu dive into Woo-Cheol's story, beginning with his own parents and their story, and following the multi-generational tale of his brother, his sons and daughters, his wives. Meanwhile the spirit of Arang watches over the events as they unfold in the city of Miryang in modern-day South Korea.

I agree with some reviews that the pacing could be uneven—the beginning unfolds so slowly and richly, and the second half skips and jumps and darts through time and can get confusing, and in the end, the marathon chapter feels like an aberration—and I agree that Yu could get overly expository (does it need to be 700 pages? I could argue that it needs to be more than 500, which I rarely am willing to argue, but I think it could have been successfully shorter).

Still, it was beautifully written throughout, and I loved what Yu did with her more experimental writing. The End of August is vivid, beautiful, and epic. I simply couldn't put this novel down. I loved the running, the spirits, that grounded this historical fiction that covers a Japan-occupied Korea straining at the seams, war-time Korea, Korea divided. Still, it was beautifully written throughout, and I loved what Yu did with her more experimental writing. Even when I was confused, I just chugged along or referenced my family tree, and it was worth all my patience. This epic left me with a satisfying heartache.

I’m a writer and I’d really love to write a horror movie with this premise… it’s all there already. Would you have any interest on collaborating on a script?

I don't think there's enough there for a movie script, and if there were, I'd prefer to write it myself, though I'm very flattered that you asked. If you want to try something similar, though, I can tell you exactly where I got the inspiration - I love Korean drama, and they have some of the best ghost stories.

If you want similar inspiration, or just want to see ghost stories both subtle and complex, I'd recommend watching dramas like Hotel Del Luna, Uncanny Counter, Arang and the Magistrate/The Tale Of Arang, Bring It On, Ghost!, The Master's Sun and Mystic Pop-Up Bar. (Not Black, though. Black not only uses the 'it was all a dream' ending, it makes it WORSE. 0 stars.) These are not-exclusively-horror ghost stories that I, a confirmed wimp, can watch, but they have a sort of combination of danger and compassion that I love and tried to capture in this story. Ghosts who do harm are thwarted violently when necessary, but there's also many ghosts who receive the help and understanding they need to find peace.

“If you were truly dead, that would’ve been part of the eulogy.” She kissed his lips as if he was snow white and she was prince charming. And like all fairy tales they read to the children, the curse breaks and the winter frost melts away to bring forth spring.

Prompt: Scions/Defending Each other

((Another one that I fought with the words for, despite having all the emotions I wanted pent up inside. Still not 100% happy with it, but I am with the screenshots at least. Have some Karo angst, 6.0 spoilers!!!))

“Karo!”

“Karoiseka!! Art thou here?”

“The Watchter said she was waiting inside, did he not?” Karo could hear Thancred, Urianger and Y’shtola looking for her as they entered the Watcher’s Tower. She had grabbed a ride on Argos, slipping in the door before everyone else, collapsing in ball. Her bow lay several films from her, kicked away as she stared at it in horror and what she had done.

“Karo!!” Thancred’s voice reached a slightly panicked tone as he rounded the corner and saw her in the lower level, unresponsive to all of them. She heard rather than saw the soft thump as he jumped down, skidding to her side.

“Urianger! ‘Shtola! Down here!” A small whimper escaped from the Bard as the hurts from her fight with Zodiark–Fandaniel–Amon caught up with her. She knew she must look a fright, small cuts peppering her skin scabbing over, her armor scorched and torn in places. Thancred was gently trying to get her attention, worry etched in every facet of his face.

“Kitten, c’mon, talk to me. What’s the matter? What happened?” Thancred’s hand brushed the side of her face as carefully as possible, searching for any major injury. The two mages had hurried their way down to their side, finding the ramp down. Claiming the other two sides of her, they poured healing magic into the Warrior of Light.

“Thine physical injuries are not great, despite thy look. Pray, tell us all,” Urianger’s words took on the same tone he had used with a scared Ryne in Ahm Arang, and Karo blinked slowly–her mind catching up to having those she cared about surrounding her in this alien place.

“I–I’ve doomed us all,” magic stilled as the trio strained to hear the words that emerged from her cracked voice. It was too much. Black ears were pinned so close to her head to be almost non-existent, and her blue-tipped tail curled tightly around her. Karo’s words broke the silence only momentarily.

“I killed Zodiark.” Karo’s head dropped into her folded arms hugging her knees as she could hear the shocked stillness around her. Zodiark–the God of their enemy–the boogie man spoke of only in hushed whispers. The eldest, and most powerful of primals, was slain by her hand. True, he was only at half power having only the rejoining of seven of the thirteen shards, yet he was still the ancient’s God, and frighteningly powerful. She had not traveled to the moon to kill him–only to stop Zenos and Fandaniel. They had led her on a merry chase, as she frantically tried to mend the wards before they arrived to pick off the last one–only to have them shatter it in her face. She had failed. There was no other word, no way around it. And now the whole star was going to pay for her incompetence.

“Karo. Karoiseka.” Y’shtola’s voice bit through her misery and got her to look up into her milky eyes.

“We need to know what happened,” a gentle hand was laid on her arm, even as Thancred was pulling her completely into his lap, having had enough of just sitting by idly. Even as she settled into his embrace, Karo reached, snagging Y’shtola’s hand that hadn’t quite gotten out of reach, and grabbed for Urianger’s with her other hand. Tucking her head under Thancred’s chin, she finally started to relate the tale, starting from when she had first stepped through the teleporter until they found her.

She relied on her echo talent of being able to spill reports with ease, not letting emotion get in the way, her voice flat and emotionless–even when mentioning seeing the real Hythlodaeus–until she mentioned seeing Zenos again. The gathered Scions could feel her tremble, her voice starting to waver as she talked about the Prince of Garlemald. There hadn’t been time to fully recover from his–experiment–which was apparent from her reaction to having to see him again so soon after the experience. The morbid choice Fandaniel made and the fight after almost seemed anticlimactic, if it wasn’t for the consequence. Zodiark had been the only thing forestalling the Final Days to the star, and now they were going to be descending upon the innocent populace.

Karo finally cracked, stoic facade crumbling as she sobbed into Thancred’s shoulder. Urianger and Y’shtola had come closer, creating a barrier between her and the world, pulsing gentle healing magics into the last of her physical wounds.

“I–I didn’t stop them. I was supposed to stop them.” The words were muffled and choppy as her anguish poured out in droves.

“Nothing went right. All the ancient souls are released, Zodiark and his protections are gone and it’s my fault.” All at once the fight went out of the Bard as she went completely limp.

“Why did She choose me?” The last sentence was barely able to be heard, breathed out as the weeping ended and she was left spent. None of the Scions answered at first, closing in to hold her in that lopsided embrace, a puddle on the floor of the oversized observatory.

“Thou art stronger than thou know,” Urianger’s voice was gentle as always. “And if thou needest help, know we are but a moment away. Our strength is yours, always.”

“He’s right you know,” Y’shtola’s voice was soft, yet with her normal biting undercurrent, “We’d like to think that we’re not useless to you, if you don’t mind.” The words were tempered with an affectionate smile. “Please, let us help.” Thancred’s arms had tightened around her, and guilt welled up within once more as she realized that she was hurting her beloved companions by trying to shoulder it all alone–again.

Perhaps. Just Perhaps, she had been chosen because she had the Scions to watch her back, to be her strength. They all brought a different specialty to the group, some of it overlapping, but each and all a boon to the group. She was just–to her chagrin–the spearhead and “Champion”. None of it would be possible without each and every Scion–and everyone else she had met for that matter. Maybe they could figure out what even the Ancients couldn’t, and forestall and overcome the Final Days.

The silence stretched on for a few minutes more as Karo’s breathing settled back down to a steady rhythm. Tugging the held hands, she pulled Urianger and Y’shtola into the hug that she was already being held in, wrapping her arms around all three the best she could.

“Thank you,” Karo’s voice was still a bit raw from the tears and the fighting before, but steady once more. “I needed that reminder.” She took another deep breath, fighting to keep her emotions stable.

“I can’t do any of this without you–any of you. I’m just so afraid,” she could feel Thancred pressing a kiss into her hair, trying to keep her calm. “Though, with you lot at my back, I shouldn’t be. We can do this, right?”

“Of course we can. That’s what we do, isn’t it?” Thancred’s voice was confident as ever, as the other two murmured their affirmation as well. “We’ll see this through, and maybe get a bit of a vacation afterwards, how about that?” The comment finally cracked Karo’s somber mood, sending her into a fit of giggles, sparking laughter from the whole little group. Vacation? What was that? Nonetheless, the weight upon her heart had lifted enough to take the next step forward.

“Alright, let’s see what the Watcher has to say about all this,” Karo sighed, not really wanting to leave the comfort of the group embrace, but knowing time was now against them once more.

“We have a star to save.”

Prompt #3: Blessings and Banes

Prompt: Temper

Characters: Y’shtola, Emet-Selch

Content Warnings: Major Shadowbringers spoilers ahead!

The gift of aethersight could be a blessing or a bane, as far as Y’shtola was concerned. Each individual had a…uniqueness to their aether not unlike fingerprints, which she thus justified her concern regarding her friends being accompanied by a being so suffused with Light-aspected aether that it was nigh blinding. All was forgiven, of course, once she heard her dear friend’s voice but the concern still lingered.

It was too similar to the goblins tempered by Alexander in the Dravanian Hinterlands. Their aether was awash in steel gray and white feathers - an indelible mark of their master that stained their very souls.

Which led her to their new companion, the Ascian who had pulled her from the Lifestream after she performed yet another reckless teleport using Flow. His aether was vast, deep and unknowable. It carried ancient pains, ancient longings, ancient loves, and would flare to life and reach toward the Warrior when she spoke. Yet she saw what the others did not. Dark, oily chains that bound him to another’s will.

At least she could find some relief that similar chains did not bind her nor her companions, if the Ascian’s tale in the Qitana Ravel was to be believed.

“She’s fraying, you know.” The smooth, all too calm observation from the Ascian made her ears twitch.

“If you know more, I would hear it.” Y’shtola turned, seeing the vast unknowable depths of his aether standing behind her.

Emet-Selch hummed in boredom. “A pity your sight does not extend to soul sight. Even sundered as you are, you can still see what this crusade of yours does to her.”

She huffed in exasperation. “Either speak plainly or go back to your lurking, Ascian,” she muttered brusquely. “We’ve much to do before departing for Ahm Arang.” She didn’t miss the slight flare of anger, nor the sorrowful glances he stole when the Warrior was too busy to notice. An Ascian showing concern and actually worried for the famed Ascian Slayer? Perhaps there were still things that could surprise her.

“Her soul is buckling under the immense strain the Light has placed upon her.” While his expression was impassive, his voice betrayed his worry. It seemed far too genuine to be his God pulling the chains, urging him to convince them to give up their crusade to save the First. “Even now, the hairline cracks in her soul are spreading, growing worse as time passes.” A sigh, perhaps one of longing. Then his aether roiled in agony as the dark chains pulled taut.

Without another word, Emet-Selch vanished into a void portal and left Y’shtola worried and wondering. Just how much longer did her dear friend have before the Light overtook her completely?

What was the Ascian’s game in all of this?

And why did it feel like his actions weren't entirely his own, but of his Master’s oppressive will?

KOREAN DRAMA TV SERIES: Arang and the Magistrate (2012) So I finished watching Arang and the Magistrate (also called Tale of Arang). I should say that I re-watched it. I watched it several years ago but forgot large parts of the story. Since it was on Viki.com and I am fan of Lee Joon Gi, I watched it again. It was 20 episodes. This series was a historical period drama / #fantasy / #romance. The plot kept me interested because there was quite a mix of characters. There were gods, demons, fairies, ghosts, the Grim Reaper, and of course, humans. I was hooked all the up until The End. That final episode was … ??? … I didn't know what to think. It was almost like the scriptwriter couldn't figure out the best way to conclude. Anyway! It was still very entertaining. I give it 3.5 out of 5 stars.
