St. Honoré no.347 – took the 2 servants and off at 11 (landau different coach man from yesterday) to Versailles – en passant called to complain to Madame Figarol (r. de Surenes no.23 bis au coin de la rue d’Anjou) that her couturière had not come at 9 – excused herself – to come at 9 am tomorrow – at Versailles (by riverside of the village of Passy and over the Pont de Sèvres) at 1 1/2 – drove to the hotel de France – but on alighting found ourselves apparently at a café – left our shawls and talked of dining there when we had seen the palais – declined taking a guide – walked up to the grille and great front entrance – nobody allowed to see the palace today! – the King expected – the palace shewn Saturdays Sundays Mondays and Tuesdays – (Wednesday Thursday and Friday allotted to the workmen great many still employed) – went back to the hotel de France – ordered the coach man to take us at the St. Germain gate at the gardens in 1 ½ hour – took guide Tessier no. 36 and set off to the gardens open to the public everyday – saw the orangery – dispute between our guide and one of the under gardeners – but we had seen enough and turned into the gardens – the perpetual fountains or rather the guides’ dogging account at the no. of foot of which each spout (in shape of frog or what not) threw the water fatigued the ear, and black clouds put one in fear of a wetting – we had seen all but the Neptune when a few drops warned us to make haste to shelter, and we were not wet to signify when just as the heavy shower came down we ran into a little wine shop just on re-entering the town from where after waiting an hour for the carriage (rained heavily almost all the time) we were off at 3 ¾ having given our guide a written paper to the following effect Madame Lister est trés contente du guide Tessier, et elle croit que c’était le garçon jardinière qui commençait par injurier le guide – I was to give the guide what I pleased – would not make a charge – gave him 3/. and he seemed quite satisfied – (a guide some years ago demanded and would have 5/. for about the same quantity of going about) – we were perhaps about 1 ½ hour or less in the gardens – looking formal as usual and the fine avenue of Italian poplars I saw and admired in 1819 cut down – some had been blown down and .:. the rest were taken down – these poplars had been planted I think (as it was said in 1819) in 1789 – did not stand more than 40 years? nothing to see at St. Germain – the old chateau turned into a barrack? However could not see it – so gave up the thought of returning by St. G- could not see the palace of St. Cloud after 4pm – too [?] to walk in the gardens .:. drove to no.27 R. St. V- and alighted there (sending the servants home to dine) at 6 ¼ - sent our portière to order dinner at the Restaurant – A- stood reading while I stood in M. Cusinbarches’ bureau looking over the almanach du commerce for addresses – Hotel Jacob not mentioned – only the hotel de Hamburg in the r. Jacob and the hotel des ministres in r. de l’université – Dr. Double Quai Voltaire no.3 – hearing that there not being exactly what we had ordered and that bifteks were to be substituted ran there ourselves (it being then fair after a smart shower) and at 7 sat down to dinner – nice tidy room an 1er. looking into the jardin des plantes thro’ the new gateway – dinner from about 7 to 8 – everything well cooked – and ½ bottle good wine côte rôti 3/50 and paid 1/50 for what we drank tho’ it was called ½ the bottle and this and all the rest = altogether 6/55 and gave la fille ./20 = 6/75 for a very good dinner – far too much – ½ would have been enough – meant to have the hotels above named – but too late – walked home – the gardens closed – fair – came in at 9 ¼ - tea – found very nice note from Mademoiselle de Noé (Madeline) in French the couturière Madame Gazel r. du Marché d’ Aguesseau NO.8  - stood reading Galignanis’ guide till 12 ¼ - A- snoring in bed – fine day till about 2 50 pm then about an hours’ thunder and several smart showers afterwards F69° at 12 tonight

This week’s Indie Game Spotlight is a reminder to lead with kindness. Plaything is a joyful and intimate game about your relationship to a small being crafted by your fingertips. In a series of personal and touching vignettes, you learn to live alongside each other. With a loving blend of hand-made animation and unfolding generative art, Plaything is a moving experience you can hold in your hands and close to your heart. We spoke with Niall Tessier-Lavigne and Will Anderson, who are both from the Highlands of Scotland. Niall has a background in games and animation, Will in animation and film. They’re co-designers on the game, which involves things like figuring out the visual direction, narrative design, and gameplay decisions. Read on!

What was the main inspiration for the game?

A lot of the ideas behind Plaything came from our desire to make something with kindness at its core. We were both thinking about our own relationships to technology and wanted to make something that’s very careful with its dynamics of dependency.

Niall: I was definitely inspired by seeing Will’s short film, Have Heart, which is what lead me to approach him in the first place. I find the ideas in it about work, love, and digital media really affecting.

Aside from that, I’d been thinking a lot about gardening games, kinda prompted by Max Kreminski’s gardening games zine; games that can have an element of nurture and care, without feeling like heavy systems. I’d also had other people’s words about empathy and games rolling around my head for a while—writing by Lana Polansky, Emilie Reed, thecatamites, Paolo Pedercini, to name a few.

Will: When I was younger, I was pretty obsessed with Tamagotchis. I had LOTS of them. The idea of nurturing something that isn’t real always fascinated me. On the surface, it feels trivial, but on closer inspection, being affected by something artistic in our lives is pretty crucial for our wellbeing. So that, along with very human character animation, is a source of inspiration.

What was it like, coming together from game development and film making backgrounds?

Early on, we did a lot of talking before figuring out what any aspects of the game would look like, or what the gameplay would consist of. We tend to approach things in quite a filmic way—jotting down possible moments and feelings, script-writing, doing rough animatics, sort of translating this into something less fixed, and more interactive. We love working with rough-cut trailers and animations of possible playthroughs set to music, as a way of thinking through the arc and tone of Plaything.

What are some ways you can create and customize the small creature?

You pull softly fizzing shapes into the center of space, loosely assembling the creature’s form. There’s a degree of control, but a big part of the design is how loose and gestural this action feels. You don’t have too much control over the final assembled form of your Plaything in the same way you don’t get to control how it behaves or feels towards you. Part of the experience of playing is mapping out how you act together, defining those hazy spaces at the edges of your relationship.

What other features does the game include?

Niall: All the features you know and love from your friends and family.

Will: Eyes, ears, mouths, arms & legs.

What do you hope players will take away from the game?

If we can give you something to waste your time with, in a way that feels genuinely meaningful, we’d be very happy. We hope to stir something up in the cold embers of our collective hearts.

Q&A with Barbara Levedag, SLH’s Vice President of Development EMEA

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF. WHERE ARE YOU FROM?

As a native German I grew up close to Hamburg, and I moved to London via a few other places more than 15 years ago. Rather surprising, bearing in mind I originally opted for a stint of one or two years only!

WHAT IS YOUR ROLE AT SLH AND WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE THING ABOUT IT?

Here at SLH I work in Development – in a nutshell, it is contributing to shape the brand by seeking unique small, luxury hotels, ideally in new destinations. My favourite thing? It allows me to dive into and learn about different cultures by meeting wonderful personalities from all walks of life. I get to travel to incredible places, whether established footprints or untouched parts of the world. In fact, I shall never forget sitting under a mango tree with the chief of a tiny village in a remote part north of Mozambique, embracing his excitement to meet a tall female German for the very first time.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BEST EXPERIENCE WHEN VISITING AN SLH HOTEL?

Talking best experiences, a number of wonderful memories come to mind, but one remains in particular – Dar Ahlam close to Ouarzazate in Morocco. This one of a kind jewel – its DNA entrenched with ‘independently mindedness’ – was created by visionaire extraordinaire Thierry Tessier. For me, staying here was like stepping into a fairytale out of One Thousand and One Nights coupled with impeccable French design in lush green surroundings 4,000 years of age – and better. Welcomed by a visual feast of a mesmerising play of light and shadows throughout this private luxury home, before I even knew I was ready for dinner, a simple yet outrageously delicious chicken tagine came out of nowhere as I was seated at a perfectly set up table in the midst of the candlelit vegetable garden under dozens of century-old palm trees. The next day one of Dar Ahlam’s guides took me for a walk in the mountains, and as we walked up one hill to enjoy the vistas, there it was – a staff member had prepared what must be the most personal, bespoke guided open air tea ceremony just for me.

      Other memorable moments are:

Relaxing in the gorgeous corner suite of Hotel Plettenberg Bay overlooking where the Indian Ocean and Atlantic Ocean meet – the hotel enjoys a prime position in the town of Plettenberg located along South Africa’s Garden Route.

Vista Palazzo Lago di Como – a jewel of a luxury getaway including what must be one of the most elegant bathrooms I have ever experienced.

Altstadt Vienna with its wonderful art collection that whets your appetite for a visit to the Albertina.

Miramonti Boutique Hotel in South Tyrol – the property’s strapline “Hard to find – hard to forget!” says it all. The incredible sense of community and place created by owners Klaus & Carmen make me want to move in! An instant home away from home feeling – I love that they take you for a walk in the forest to help you unwind and see clearly!

WHAT SLH HOTEL DO YOU MOST WANT TO VISIT?

A tricky question – there are so many I still want to see and experience! High on my list is Halcyon House in Australia for that picture perfect carefree beach life vibe.

    WHICH IS YOUR FAVOURITE CITY AND WHY?

In terms of my favourite city with an SLH presence, I much enjoy Tel Aviv – plenty of sunshine, fun loving, very outdoorsy, world famous for its vegan cuisine, great beaches and a distinct sense of neighbourhood. A stay at the The Norman is a highlight – the hotel has taken luxury hospitality to a new level. For me, it is the epitomised version of a luxury boutique hotel oozing timeless elegance and wonderful attention to detail by paying tribute to the impeccable Bauhaus architectural design style. In fact, I am writing this whilst sitting in the tranquil garden of The Norman indulging in what must be one of Israel’s best Hummus by Abu Hassan, simply delicious!

    Otherwise I have a soft spot for Rio de Janeiro – a city of extremes in its own right for sure, and for me it represents a combination of the best bits of the likes of Sydney, Cape Town and Barcelona, entrenched with the Brazilian version of La Dolce Vita.

  WHICH DESTINATION DO YOU MOST WANT TO VISIT AND WHY?

A tricky one as my bucket list of destinations to visit seems never ending! I’d like to visit Rwanda, ‘Land of the Thousand Hills’ and spectacular natural sights – and gorillas! Namibia for its vast space and the Namib desert – or Bolivia for its Uyuni salt flats. I still haven’t been to Bhutan either.

    WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE HOBBY, OUTSIDE OF WORK?

My favourite hobby? I reckon I have quite a few! After 15 years in London the city’s cultural offering still excites me, hence the likes of Tate museums, Royal Opera House, Barbican and Victoria & Albert Museum are firm favourites in my calendar. I’ve always liked to stay fit, ideally as part of team sport – back in the days it was volleyball, now yoga has taken over. In fact, I have just completed a 40 days long, three hours per day yoga meditation programme. 2020, here I come!

HOW DO YOU BRING A PIECE OF YOU TO SLH?

The answer to this question may well lie in the eye of the collegial beholder! I’d like to think I add a good sense of humour with the occasional moments of German efficiency thrown in. And some incredible properties that are oozing a remarkable level of uniqueness and soul too.

Breakfast at 9 Madame Calés came about 9 ¼ instead of 8 ½ - 1 pair of stays ordered for A- and pair for me – should want more if the pair suited me – Madame C- much recommended (on my asking her) Madame Dorval couturière (neither great nor little medium as to price) r. St. Honoré n°347 – took the 2 servants and off at 11 (landau different coach man from yesterday) to Versailles – en passant called to complain to Madame Figarol (r. de Surenes n°23 bis au coin de la rue d’Anjou) that her couturière had not come at 9 – excused herself – to come at 9 am tomorrow – at Versailles (by riverside of the village of Passy and over the Pont de Sèvres) at 1 1/2 – drove to the hotel de France – but on alighting found ourselves apparently at a café – left our shawls and talked of dining there when we had seen the palais – declined taking a guide – walked up to the grille and great front entrance – nobody allowed to see the palace today! – the King expected – the palace shewn Saturdays Sundays Mondays and Tuesdays – (Wednesday Thursday and Friday allotted to the workmen great many still employed) – went back to the hotel de France – ordered the coach man to take us at the St. Germain gate at the gardens in 1 ½ hour – took guide Tessier n° 36 and set off to the gardens open to the public everyday – saw the orangery – dispute between our guide and one of the under gardeners – but we had seen enough and turned into the gardens – the perpetual fountains or rather the guides’ dogging account at the no. of foot of which each spout (in shape of frog or what not) threw the water fatigued the ear, and black clouds put one in fear of a wetting – we had seen all but the Neptune when a few drops warned us to make haste to shelter, and we were not wet to signify when just as the heavy shower came down we ran into a little wine shop just on re-entering the town from where after waiting an hour for the carriage (rained heavily almost all the time) we were off at 3 ¾ having given our guide a written paper to the following effect Madame Lister est trés contente du guide Tessier, et elle croit que c’était le garçon jardinière qui commençait par injurier le guide – I was to give the guide what I pleased – would not make a charge – gave him 3/. and he seemed quite satisfied – (a guide some years ago demanded and would have 5/. for about the same quantity of going about) – we were perhaps about 1 ½ hour or less in the gardens – looking formal as usual and the fine avenue of Italian poplars I saw and admired in 1819 cut down – some had been blown down and .:. the rest were taken down – these poplars had been planted I think (as it was said in 1819) in 1789 – did not stand more than 40 years? nothing to see at St. Germain – the old chateau turned into a barrack? However could not see it – so gave up the thought of returning by St. G- could not see the palace of St. Cloud after 4pm – too [?] to walk in the gardens .:. drove to n°27 R. St. V- and alighted there (sending the servants home to dine) at 6 ¼ - sent our portière to order dinner at the Restaurant – A- stood reading while I stood in M. Cusinbarches’ bureau looking over the almanach du commerce for addresses – Hotel Jacob not mentioned – only the hotel de Hamburg in the r. Jacob and the hotel des ministres in r. de l’université – Dr. Double Quai Voltaire n°3 – hearing that there not being exactly what we had ordered and that bifteks were to be substituted ran there ourselves (it being then fair after a smart shower) and at 7 sat down to dinner – nice tidy room an 1er. looking into the jardin des plantes thro’ the new gateway – dinner from about 7 to 8 – everything well cooked – and ½ bottle good wine côte rôti 3/50 and paid 1/50 for what we drank tho’ it was called ½ the bottle and this and all the rest = altogether 6/55 and gave la fille ./20 = 6/75 for a very good dinner – far too much – ½ would have been enough – meant to have the hotels above named – but too late – walked home – the gardens closed – fair – came in at 9 ¼ - tea – found very nice note from Mademoiselle de Noé (Madeline) in French the couturière Madame Gazel r. du Marché d’ Aguesseau N°8  - stood reading Galignanis’ guide till 12 ¼ - A- snoring in bed – fine day till about 2 50 pm then about an hours’ thunder and several smart showers afterwards F69° at 12 tonight

The Pros and Cons of an Outdoor Shower

The idea of soaping up under the stars can seem romantic—luxurious, even. Whether spartan or opulent, an outdoor shower on a sunny day or a warm evening can be a pampering, even life-affirming, experience. But there’s another side, too. To some, an outdoor shower is little more than a mucky, bug-infested, impractical eyesore. So who’s right?

It turns out both sides are! People are sharply divided on the pros and cons of this summer-friendly amenity. If you’re thinking of installing one in your home, consider the following arguments for and against.

Pro: It’s a small vacation

Feel like you’re in a spa commercial? You might, if you decide to install your own outdoor shower.

“You can be transported to another place, somewhere carefree or luxurious,” notes Bea Pila of B. Pila Design, in Miami. And it’s quite refreshing on a muggy day to stand outdoors under a blast of cool water.

Con: It’s sort of messy

All sorts of creepy-crawlies are drawn to this perennially damp outdoor space. Leaves, acorns, and tree needles will fill the drain and pile up in corners. And dogs and birds might just wander in to do their business when you’re not around. Yup, you really need to clean this thing.

Pro: There’s more space

Ahh—room to stretch! Most outdoor showers are bigger than the ones you have inside the house. And even if they aren’t, they sure feel bigger.

Con: It’s chilly

Sure, you’ll use your alfresco shower on those perfect-weather days. But it’s considerably less awesome during those days when you find yourself all wet when the clouds suddenly roll in and the wind kicks up. And do you really think you’re going to be using the place during a deep freeze or even a serious autumn chill?

Pro: It’s great for guests

“We have too many showers in this house,” said no one, ever. Summer holidays like the Fourth of July and Labor Day might leave you begging for an outdoor shower where guests can clean off. There’s no more waiting in line when you can send the kids or overflow guests outside to this handy spigot.

Con: They’re not cheap

“Freestanding showers can be really expensive because the materials have to be high-quality—especially if you live near saltwater, where fixtures can corrode,” says Pila.

No matter where your shower is situated, you’ll still need a durable stainless-steel or brass shower head and frost-proof fixtures to withstand colder temps, according to Craig Jenkins-Sutton, president of Topiarius, a gardening and landscaping firm in Chicago. And if you try to save money upfront, you’ll probably wind up shelling more out later.

“Poorly made shower kits and improper installation can lead to drainage problems, cracking, buckling, and leaks,” says Jenkins-Sutton.

Pro: You can rinse off with ease

Got sand from the beach or muddy feet from the garden? An outdoor shower is the solution. You can also rinse off your deck furniture and even scrub an outdoor rug in this stall.

“And it’s great for washing items like paddleboards, coolers, or the grill rack,” adds Jenkins-Sutton.

Con: There’s all that exposure

You’re free! You’re naked! You’re exposed. In the off chance your child opens the door unexpectedly or a delivery person needs you to sign for something, being in your outdoor shower is less than ideal. To be safe, you’ll have to take alfresco showers when another person is at home to deal with the doorbell and deliveries.

Pro: It’s perfect for your most important household member

He digs all day and loves to roll in the dirt, so you know it’s much easier to wash him off here. But enough about your husband—let’s talk about your dog! Cleaning him off in the outdoor shower sure beats chasing the pooch with the hose or trying to get him into the kiddie pool.

Con: The water bill can rise

Do you like banging down the bathroom door to get your teen to cease her half-hour shower? Probably not. And you won’t want to march across the lawn to deliver the same message, either. Another shower, whether inside or out, generally means more water down the drain and a higher monthly bill.
