The Fall of the House of Usher is many things and I'm making a conscious choice to not scream about every single one of them rn, but what left me staring at a wall in tears is just... kindness. Death was kind. She gave every choice, every reason to stop. She would take these kids anyway but she also regretted having to take them like that. She cared when nobody else would, even though they kept making the wrong choices.

She's never cruel for cruelty's sake. She wasn't cruel to Lenore. She just sent a child to sleep as lovingly as she could, with kind words and kinder touch.

And I don't even know how to express the absolute heartbreak with blinding warmth among the cracks, when Death herself kneels before one man, worst man, honest man, who refused her offer – and thanks him with such respect.

Mike Flanagan, you fucking did it again. Carla Gugino, you... I don't even have words for you. That's a whole-ass masterpiece of human soul, meaning, and searching right there.

#the fall of the house of usher #tfothou #tfothouedit #tw flashing #i am very sad and a little upset because #some mike flanagan shows have an atmosphere and a tone and a general vibe that i find very compelling #that makes for an intense and pleasurable viewing experience even when the story or the pacing are uneven #and ep2 felt so much like that and i was so in - but then it wasn't there anymore and i kept waiting for it to come back #the cast was great and the cinematography mostly on point but... overall very meh #tv shows i watched in 2023 #i made this #i just want a tag for the things i personally put out into the world

Okay we keep talking about "characters of all time" but Arthur Gordon Pym truly is THE character. He's an old man. He's the Pym reaper. He lies to cops. He owns the cops. He wears his funny little hat and funny little gloves. He is the most litigious, most untouchable, most ruthless lawyer in the corporate world. If you kill someone and call him to hide the body for you, that's TOO boring for him. He's probably a cannibal. been watching fall of the house of usher with my dad and honestly I think the most interesting part of all these succession knock offs is seeing, quite clearly, what a) the writers of these variant shows found most interesting about succession personally which is fine and b) what the studios think made succession successful. like, tfothou is clearly Netflix saying "what people like about succession is a rich family of monsters tearing each other apart" and white lotus is like, "what people like about succession is the fact these rich people are horrible" and the righteous gemstones is like "what people like about succession is the shambolic bratty children trying to take over a dying business" and morning show season 3 is Apple being like, "what people really like about succession is the big scary company deals" but none of them actually holds a candle to succession because what people ACTUALLY love about succession is how rich it is. how there's so much more to it than just rich people being horrible or kids being bratty or any of the surface layer shit these knock off variants try to make their whole shtick. also, most of all, succession actually had class consciousness, which none of these shows have because they're still operating under the MO that audiences deep down still find such wealth aspirational. something succession not only rejected in its ethos, but arguably shamed its audience for within the show itself.

no, actually, not that. the point was she's old and grey and refusing to accept that her time is up and all her ai immortality and stolen egyptain artifacts won't keep her here. the point was, her honey wig is still much closer to herself than the grey streaks that I bet are making her fucking angry. the point was, she could've done so, much, more. guys. madeline usher is one strong-willed bitch who's absolutely fucking refusing to die.

and I appreciated her taking the wig off before going in for verna, ready to maim and negotiate, specifically in that order. it has certain beauty. she knows she won't fool verna, so she doesn't try. verna is ancient. so madeline bares teeth, because cornered animals are the most dangerous and because age becomes an advantage now, and reminds herself that she is an old, conniving, seasoned monster too.
