fic writer interview
(tagged by @sunriseverse, tysm for the tag!! 💙 posting on my sideblog because it feels like the right place for this sort of rambling.)
How many works do you have on AO3? 10 (plus the one i orphaned, which still has my username attached). one is fanart. i'm... a very irregular writer.
What’s your total AO3 word count? 32,694 words (i do mean a very irregular writer lol).
What are your top 5 fics by kudos? 1) snow and repetitions of snow (elder scrolls) (169) 2) no takebacks (mysterious lotus casebook) (126) 3) a light that does not flicker (elder scrolls) (85) 4) what's in a name? (mysterious lotus casebook) (78) 5) to gravity and the unknown (elder scrolls) (50) the actual most-kudosed work of mine is the Accursed Orphan, red oni, blue oni (tensei shitara slime datta ken) with 2202 (oh god). it really, really wasn't my best work, i stopped following the canon when i got bored with the plot, and the constant stream of kudos emails started to get on my nerves, hence the orphaning.
Do you respond to comments? Why or why not? i try my best to! that said there are a lot of unanswered comments from periods where i just couldn't keep up with life. i appreciate each and every one though! i swear i'll get around to them someday 😭
What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending? i tend to write bittersweet more than outright angsty. maybe snow and repetitions of snow, featuring two shitty stubborn wizards who are on-again off-again exes/enemies with benefits. it ends on them realizing that their ideals and personalities are irreconcilable and yet they cherish each other regardless. sometimes it just be that way!
What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending? no takebacks is very short but given that it undoes a major character death and ends with a sort-of marriage proposal: probably that one. sometimes you just gotta write fluff to soothe the soul.
Do you write crossovers? not really. occasional crossover cameos can be fun, but overall they don't interest me a ton? i much prefer fusion AUs, but i don't often write them; perhaps because my stuff tends to be shorter and more intensely character-focused than setting-focused.
Have you ever received hate on a fic? not openly. if anyone's hating on my fics in private that's their prerogative lmao.
Do you write smut? If so, what kind? occasionally! there's one explicit fic on my account and numerous WIPs that may or may not ever see the light of day. "porn with feelings" is probably the best description for the stuff i tend to write. sometimes the characters are trying very hard to ignore those feelings but they're still there. (shout out to the one lin chen/mei changsu WIP in my folder which is Very Much That.)
Have you ever had a fic stolen? not to my knowledge. i tend to write for small fandoms and rare pairs so i'm probably not high on the radar for that sort of thing?
Have you ever had a fic translated? yes! snow and repetitions of snow was translated into mandarin, i'm very happy that someone liked my fic enough to do so :)
Have you ever co-written a fic before? not yet, though i've done illustrations for big bang fics in the past, and RP'd and created shared AU verses with friends. actual co-writing isn't something i've done, but the idea is intriguing! (that said, i'm extremely flakey and wouldn't wish myself as a co-writer upon anyone.)
What’s your all-time favorite ship? "all-time" is a pretty broad category, wow. in terms of sheer volume of fics i've bookmarked though mei changsu/xiao jingyan are absolutely destroying the competition, no contest. in terms of "currently rent-free in my brain" i am frantically paddling this XJY/MCS/LC rareship against the current.
What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will? (gestures vaguely at my entire folder of WIPs. weeps loudly.) tbh talking too much about my WIPs or even giving them a serious title until they're most-of-the-way finished feels like giving them the kiss of death. i'm not superstitious but i'm like a little stitious, you know?
What are your writing strengths? given that my entire writing process feels kind of like banging my head against a wall while crying: hard to say! i'm told i'm good with conveying tension though. in terms of characterization, insufferable theatrical magnificent bastards.
What are your writing weaknesses? long plotty fic and me are not friends. my pacing can be a bit mood whiplash-y at times. i abuse italics and semicolons like they're going out of fashion.
What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic? depends on the cultural context of the canon, the purpose for doing so, etc... like pretty much anything else, it can be used to good effect, or it can be really grating. i think things like honorifics and terms that don't have a good 1:1 english translation are pretty much fine.
What was the first fandom you wrote for? idk probably some pokemon OC thing when i was like ten years old? in terms of fic completed and posted online, elder scrolls.
What’s a fandom/ship you haven’t written for yet but want to? (shoving numerous WIPs back into my folder) does NiF count? i haven't finished anything for it yet... in terms of canons i haven't touched at all, maybe sha po lang. i read the entire thing in one long weekend while house-sitting for a friend and i'm still not sure if it was good or if it just hit all my kinks just right, but either way there's probably something to work with here.
What’s your favorite fic you’ve written? it's also a WIP (mostly written, just lacking a solid ending) and it's utter self-indulgent nonsense designed to appeal to no one but me but: i'm very fond of how to deflower your martial brother (wo jia dashixiong naozi you keng). hanahaki disease, fucky shixiong/shidi relations, horrible pun in the title: these are a few of my favourite things.
tagging! @shararan @strandedchesspiece @foxofninetales @sinni-ok-sessi @junemermaid @melodious-tear @thebansacredbanned and anyone else who's interested (no pressure ofc!)

20 Questions for Fic Writers
Thank you for tagging me @meraki-yao. I am very happy at the oportunity to shamelessly plug many, many of my fics :D Let’s do this!
How many works do you have on ao3?
47
What?! When did that happen? And how?
What’s your total ao3 word count?
502,199
Weirdly less surprising, even thought hat number is completely unreal.
What fandoms do you write for?
Interview with the vampire (2022)
Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries
Red White and Royal Blue
Star trek: Deep Space Nine
And I have one teeny tiny Thunderbirds fic
Top 5 fics by kudos
Somewhere I have never travelled (ds9)
Petal by Petal (ds9)
Your most frail gesture (ds9)
Watch that man (rwrb)
Personality (ds9)
I feel like I should count the first three as one, since it’s literally parts 1, 2 and 3 of a trilogy.
Surprising how fast my first rwrb fic got up there.
Do you respond to comments?
Always, usually a bit rambly. I love talking to people about my writing :D
What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Puh, that’s a hard one. I’m such a happy endings girl. My instinct was one of my iwtv fics, but they’re more angry than angsty lol, so I’m saying it’s between Of all untruths the truest is you (iwtv) and Do no harm (ds9)
What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Your most frail gesture ends with a wedding, though actually I like the accepted proposal in Petal by Petal more.
Do you get hate on fics?
None so far (knock on wood).
Do you write smut?
No. A lot of my fics make it clear sex is happing but I don’t write it and I haven’t really any urge to.
Craziest crossover
My TayNick character crossover New Information. Also my only crossover so far, but that’s a side note.
Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I know of. Hopefully having all my stuff archivelocked will keep it that way.
Have you ever had a fic translated?
YES! Someone did a translation of Do no harm into Russian. Only one of the coolest things that ever happened to me (though I would have preferred to be asked beforehand rather than simply be presented with a link).
Have you ever co-written a fic before?
No. I’m not entirely sure how that would work, but I’d be open to it.
All time favourite ship?
Why do people insist you have to have one favourite over everything else? No, I’m an adult, I can have as many OTPs as I want.
What’s a wip you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?
Beneath Lucifer’s claws. I love this story so much, but I have it in me to finish it. I also have an old ATLA fic I love to bits, that has really neat bits but I was such a different person when I wrote it, it would need a complete rewrite and half of my favourite scenes don’t really work anymore.
What are your writing strengths?
I’ve been told my pacing is good. And I think I’m quite good at characters voices right when it comes to fanfic.
What are your writing weaknesses?
Punctuation. And I definitely suffer from ‘why use a period when I can use a comma’ disease XD. Scene transitions always feel clumsy to me, I don’t know if they read like it.
Thoughts on dialogue in another language?
Oh, there’s an essay. If I were to give general advice I’d say, avoid it. It’s fun to read when you speak the language and annoying if you don’t, having to look up stuff all the time interrupts the reading flow. It’s even more annoying when you speak the language and the author clearly didn’t.
I’ve seen it done well once, where it was used so the characters couldexchange information because that was the natural thing to do for them, while keeping it a secret from the reader. That was neat. 'But even that could be done by just saying 'he said something in [language]'.
First fandom you wrote in?
Published or not? My first published fic was Jack’s Desk for mfmm. But I also still have fifteen year old supernatural and vampire diaries fics in a notebook somewhere. The world wasn’t ready yet.
Favourite fic you’ve written?
Something unstoppable and Somewhere I have never travelled. Neither of them came out the way I thought they would but I love how they ended up so much.

20 Questions for Fic Writers
Thank you so much for the tag @zealouswerewolfcollector ! 💛💚
1. How many works do you have on ao3? 16, as of today! I tend to compile my ficlets (<2k) and drabbles into one place.
2. What's your total ao3 word count? 95483. So close to 100k! Soon.
3. What fandoms do you write for? Silmarillion, LoTR, and one other fandom that I shall not name here (it's visible on my ao3 though lol).
4. What are your top five fics by kudos? I'll list the Tolkien ones:
Promise of Happiness : A kidnap fam fic! They tend to be popular in our fandom, don't they?
Words They Said : Collection of my dialogue-centric ficlets.
To Learn Thy Song : My beloved Aragorn/Lothiriel post-war WIP!
Where do we go? : The first fic I wrote for this fandom. It's a Feanorion bonding short piece.
They Named it Love : Unrequited Russingon with aroace Mae!
5. Do you respond to comments? Usually yes. I try to. But I've missed some due to irl constraints... they haunt me though.
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? Oh this is a difficult question. Maybe Kinslayer in Truth? Yeah, Maedhros dies in that one 😶
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? Oh easily, Promise of Happiness! It's there in the name. And Loveless too! It's a good warm one with father-son bonding and aroace Fingon.
8. Do you get hate on fics? Nope. The only kind of silent readers writers are happy about are the outraged ones.
9. Do you write smut? Ah I really cannot imagine myself ever writing that. Smut and I are acquaintances and no more. I mean, as a reader I search it up once in a blue moon, but on a regular day, you cannot tempt me into even reading it, much less writing it. It's a skip for me.
10. Do you write crossovers? Again nope. I'm not a fan of crossovers either. I've read some brilliant ones, but I don't see the appeal myself... One canon universe is already too big for me to handle.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen? I don't write that good for that to happen lmao. (But I once had my poetry stolen. It was a bot copying the site I posted on. I was so mad I got DMCA to hide the links from showing up in searches at least.)
12. Have you ever had a fic translated? Yes! In the other fandom I write for, someone translated my fic into Vietnamese. Very happy for that.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before? No... my writing habits don't allow a collaboration, it's too sporadic. But I beta read once or twice! It was nice.
14. What's your all time favourite ship? Me/my metaphorical pen. It's an on and off again, tragic ship with misunderstandings and periods of abandonment. It feels like unrequited love at times, but I hope it's not and that they can live hea 🥺. Jokes aside, as a reader, sure, there are many across various fandoms, but as a writer, I do not.
15. What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? This is a sinister question 😭 wdym I doubt I'll finish. I have every hope to finish it someday! The fic is To Learn Thy Song btw. My most ambitious project to date.
16. What are your writing strengths? Oh, one-liners easily. They're different from dialogues to me as they can also be set into narration. I get these singular lines in my mind and I centre whole fics around them. They're strengths as they drive my writing instead of hampering it. That said, I also believe characters and their inter-personal dynamics are a pillar I build my fics on.
17. What are your writing weaknesses? Besides writing itself 😅? Plot. I don't think I've ever written a fic with solid plot. I'm also quite slow with setting up and switching scenes. Mostly, descriptions and fillers are difficult for me.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogues in another language in a fic. I would rather use italics and bolded letters to convey different languages. Most readers, myself included, do not bother reading all those foreign letters, they just look for the translation instead at the bottom. One or two words, though, can enhance the reading experience instead of detracting from it.
19. First fandom you wrote for? Supernatural! Funnily enough, that fic is my most popular one. Though given the size of that fandom, it's not as surprising, but given the quality of my writing then? Very very shocking honestly!
20. Favourite fic you've written? Right now, Loveless. 💔
I truly don't know who has done this already so if you see this and haven't answered these already, I dare you to @ me and just do it! 😝

Fic writer tag
@silenthillmutual tagged me in this challenge. Cheers! Here are my answers:
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
Not counting orphaned / anonymous works, I have 48 fics across both accounts
2. What is your AO3 wordcount?
168,810 (sum total of both accounts)
3. What fandoms do you write for?
DC comics & related media; Death Note; Black Mirror: Bandersnatch (way way back); Noragami (also way way back).
I used to write RPF too (I was a teenager, of course I did) but I've scrubbed all that from my ao3 profiles.
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
top 5 fics not including anonymous ones:
Old aches become new again (DCU | Jason & Dick shenanigans, background Jay/Roy/Kori)
Imposter Syndrome (DCU | JayRoy)
Growing Pains (DCU × The Lego Batman Movie | Dick & Batdad gen fic)
if you can't summon your own tentacles, store-bought is fine (DCU | JayRoy)
the hands that worship you (Black Mirror: Bandersnatch | Colin/Stefan)
5. Do you respond to comments?
Always! It might take days weeks or months depending on what I have going on in my life but yeah :) unless it's a hate comment or bad faith criticisms. Oh and comments asking questions that I've already answered in the author's notes or in other comments or in the text itself (which yes, has happened before. I guess it was good for ""engagement "" but it's not stuff I want to explain again and again like a broken record. I'm not paid to do that - unlike at my day job.......)
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
🤡 I've written my fair share of dark fics so it's definitely one of those ones. You can DM me if you wanna know but I am not telling on myself here
7. What is the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Growing Pains, no contest, because it ends with trans acceptance 💚
But I also think happy endings at the end of a high stakes fic are even more rewarding? In which case it would have to be This Mirror Ain't Big Enough For the Two of Us
8. Do you get hate on fics?
I have, once, on a genderbend fic. Some guy was outraged I made Jason a girl lol. But hate comments are few and far between for me because I'm not a bnf by any means
9. Do you write smut? If so, which kind?
Yeah. I write a lot of pwps because they're easy. From there I either go into pwp with feelings territory, crack territory or, well, if it's a dark fic...........one of my longest nsfw fics is a Jason Todd/Scarecrow fic. You get the picture. (That one isn't without plot though.)
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest crossover you’ve ever written?
Man. I actually once wrote a YouTube RPF x Death Note crossover. iykyk. But out of my surviving fics the only crossover that I still have posted online is a Death Note x DC fic.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not as far as I know
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
I've translated other people's fics, but I don't think I've had mine translated by others
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Yes but that's from before my ao3 days
14. What’s your all-time favorite ship?
Rem x Misa (Death Note). I go through phases of shipping different pairings but Rem x Misa is the one that I can always come back to and write stuff for / look at art about.
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
My Teen Titans Dark Academia au. And on that note: I don't even know if I'll have the time to come back to writing long fics period. It's been 8 months since I last worked on my Jaime (Blue Beetle)/Eddie (Kid Devil)/Rose Wilson/Traci 13 road trip & interdimensional travel fic...........
16. What are your writing strengths?
My prose when I'm in the mood to write well. Poetry is my main medium these days so I'm very good at throwing in lots of one liners into my prose too.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Trying to pace my story beats and juggle multiple subplots once my projects get into 10K+ / long fic territory.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
As long as the author actually knows what they're doing. The language has to be authentic and not Google Translate gibberish. And then for accessibility's sake they should include the translation either in-text or in the end notes.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
YouTube RPF 😑
20. Favorite fic you’ve written?
It's a tie between:
And the encore lasts forever (DCU x Titans TV | trans!Jason/Rose)
Exit Strategy (DCU | Rose Wilson character study)
Tagging @kiseiakhun @thenaphorism @shhhenanigans @smagata @reaperlight @mihaelkeehl or any mutuals who post fics!

20 questions for fic writers
thank u @isahorcrux for tagging me !
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
10
2. What's your total AO3 word count?
85,062 words
3. What fandoms do you write for?
i now only write for HP and just jily, but i used to write lucaya from girl meets world lmaoo
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
this is such a weird order to me but: i would still be on my feet, a slip of the thumb, as it always was (it always was, it always was) [lol], stage fright, and then i love you much (most beautiful darling) and spare the rest for me are tied
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
i try to!! especially if someone took the time to write a really nice or long one. i like for people to know i appreciate it!
6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
i think the only fic i have with an angsty ending is "i love you much (most beautiful darling)" because it's canon jily until their death. for some reason i wanted to do that when i was 18 idk
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
probably barry, bond, and the blues or a slip of the thumb, just because they were pretty much all fluff beginning to end
8. Do you get hate on fics?
no i don't think i ever have. i genuinely don't think people care enough to lmao
9. Do you write smut. If so, what kind?
i have but only like a scene or so, and it's all fairly mild except for maybe one or two explicit words lol. i have other stuff in the works but haven't touched it in ages
10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?
nope and i don't intend to. they just don't really interest me
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
nop!
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
someone asked to translate an old lucaya fic into russian but idk if they ever did lol
13. Have you ever cowritten a fic before?
no, but i would! i just think i'd be terrible at cowriting because i'm sooo slow
14. What's your all-time favorite ship?
oh god. i think literati and jily are tired for me, just from their sheer staying power in my heart + how frequently i go through periods of obsession with them
15. What's a WIP you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?
ugh. my people we meet on vacation au "let's fall apart and start again" that i literally only have the prologue posted for. one of these days u guys......
16. What are your writing strengths?
ummm i think dialogue! at least that's usually what i start with and then try to build around.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
isa said finishing things and that is so true. i also would say inner monologues
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
omg it scares me to death i have too much anxiety about getting it completely wrong
19. First Fandom you wrote for?
well technically harry potter if u count my 7 yo fanfiction, but officially it would be gmw/lucaya
20. Favorite fic you've ever written?
in terms of jily, i do really like "let's fall apart and start again" and "stage fright", but is it crazy if i say im actually still proud of my 17yo self writing like 50k of two disney characters jsdfkj a
ok as usual im sure all my ct discord friends have been tagged but whatever @sunshinemarauder @possessingtheproperspirit @emeralddoeadeer

Writers tag game!
A big thank you to @saathiray for the tag! This looks like a really interesting one to do!! :D :D
Alright, let's get into it...
How many works do you have on ao3?
21!
What's your total ao3 word count?
ough.... maths..... if i wrote the numbers down right, then 187 780 words! :D
What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
To no one's surprise, most of there are blue exorcist fics haha :,D
1. Clickflight. (71) 2. Ad terram nullium. (61) 3. Oh, my worst emotions. (60) 4. Human(oid?) (59) 5. aranea et flamma (42)
Do you respond to comments; why or why not?
I do! Well, almost every time (but the comment has to rub me the wrong way / confuse quite hard to make me not respond). I don't really know why? It just feels polite maybe shdusdh
What's the fic you've written with the angstiest ending?
I'm not sure any of my fics have particularly angsty endings 🤔 They're mostly ambiguous or menacing in some way hahah... Perhaps Ad terram nullium or Oh, my worst emotions are the angstiest ones. Cor Aegrotum is also a good contender because it definitely ends on a bitter note. :D :D ahh idk lmao
What's the fic you've written with the happiest ending?
Another difficult question. Not sure. Speak fondly upon that memory is probably the most feel-good fic I have so I reckon it has the happiest ending 😂
Do you write crossovers? If so, what's the craziest one you've ever written?
I don't think I've ever written a crossover, no. The closest is a current wip that's like characters from one thing in the setting of another thing? But I didn't keep any characters from the thing I got the setting from, not sure if it counts as a crossover lmao.
Hope this made sense <3
Have you ever received hate on a fic?
No, I have not, thank goodness! Perhaps quite lucky, since I know one of my faves isn't too well liked in the fandom lol. But it's a small fandom, and the character isn't very popular so ¯\(´・ω・`)/¯
Also, I'm not exactly a well known/popular author so. I can just do whatever I want most of the time lmao
Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
I have written smut, various kinds of it. >//-//>
Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I know of. Hopefully not :D
Have you ever had a fic translated?
No, I haven't ^w^ I've considered trying my hand at translating fics on occasion though, I like translating stuff well enough. Not that anyone needs fics translated into latvian much 😂
Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Nope! But I think I'd like to try someday maybe, because two authors and friends I look up to a lot (jay & rynoa if u read this ily) collaborate on a lot of fics and they always come out so cool and good and solid and i think that's so neat that creatives can come together like that?? like wow!! truly amazing and beautiful to witness <3
What's your all-time favourite ship?
Genuinely don't know!
I've come back to a specific collection of Tarn/Deathsaurus (from the transformers more than meets the eye comic) fics a whole bunch so I guess that's as close as it gets!
I... have a hard time remembering stuff I like outside of the periods I am obsessed with it, you see. Currently I'm reading a lot of star wars fics so there's a lot of kylux and some gingerpilot?
it's really hard to say, im not sure i have an all-time favourite , more just a bunch of faves i come back to from time to time
What's a WIP that you want to finish but don't think you ever will?
A fic I started about Tarn from transformers getting some kind of head injury and having to re-learn how to speak? I really like the concept of it because his voice is how he kills and all that, but I just don't know what direction it could go in anymore. It's more of a thing I can ponder about privately rather than something I want to bring to a finish and publish, if that makes sense?
Other than that one, I have a whole bunch of fics I started in fandoms I dipped my hands into but never found friends and stuff off who to bounce my ideas so the motivation kind of died. One of those was a thing for Gotham's Penguin - I was going to do like a life story in vignettes but I recognise now I won't finish it :D
What are your writing strengths?
I sort of? Idk how to put this in a way that doesn't sound too self-aggrandizing, but once I get into a character's head, I get into a character's head. Multiple people have praised my characterizations, one even going as far as to say that the voices sound like the canon and that's something I hold really dearly in my heart and which makes me feel v warm inside. ;3; <3 <3 <3
What are your writing weaknesses?
World building and having more than 2 people in a fic 😭 I focus so much on the character I'm writing about that sometimes it's hard to think about everything that happens around them, or to make the other characters have enough depth! All my fics are like... sticking to a single person, deep pov style. I would like to get out of my comfort zone more and try and write fics that focus on more than one character!
What are your thougts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?
There's a time and place for everything! Usually I just hope that there's translations in the end notes 😂😂 But it can definitely help in making the reader feel as helpless and confused as the character who doesn't speak the language :D
What was the first fandom you wrote fic for?
Ib, the rpg game, I think? At least that's the first one I wrote fic for on the computer, I think I might have written something like yugioh fanfic in a notepad in sixth grade 🤔🤔 afraid i've lost both, though
What's your favourite fic that you've written?
ahh... difficult question...
I think it's sort of a tie between Somnus and Even a worm will turn? They're both about Toudou and I like them for different reasons. Somnus just came out so beautiful and poetic, I think, a lot of meaning packed into just under 1k words, whereas Even a worm will turn is like a beast full of negative emotions and violence and all the dark stuff and the way the soul blackens as it goes down the slippery slope between what one feels they have to do and what is right that i managed to get out in a weirdly cathartic way... It's really hard to decide on this question hahah...

fic writer review
tagged by @bisexuallsokka thank you 🧡 🧡 putting my tagging here so @maderilien @dickpuncher420 @marriedzukka @zukoscalzones @babydotcom if any of you are interested!!
1. how many works do you have on ao3? 27! only eight of those were written within the past two years tho lol
2. what's your total ao3 word count? 163,360.....which felt fake bc of the long break between writing so i counted only the recent fics and that's. still 91,749 holy shit lmao
3. how many fandoms have you written for and what are they? if i'm remembering correctly, then six! (atla, harry potter, that singular fruits basket fic when i was 14, kpop (shh), marvel, mdzs, and atla again lol)
4. what are your top 5 fics by kudos? useless facts (clintbucky - and tbh only bc it's a 5yo fic lol)
hold me like you do, cover me in blue (zukka)
hands, knees, please, tangerine (zukka)
get a glimpse of this candy paint (clintbucky - also a 5yo fic lol)
don't go wasting your emotion (sangcheng)
5. do you respond to comments, why or why not? i actually didn't use to, but i do now. i feel like the 'leave a comment' game has changed significantly on ao3 and i like showing my appreciation back now! (oh man i have so many comments i still need to respond to omg)
6. what's the fic you've written with the angstiest ending? lmfao none. i'm not a huge fan of writing angst-based stories or endings, BUT i guess technically it's the mallrat in me can be considered for this one since chpt 4 did end with some angst (for now!)
7. do you write crossovers? if so, what's the craziest one you've written? i don't write fandom crossovers but i do like writing ridiculous au's, and i would say that the funniest jobs i've given any character was the clintbucky exterminator/locksmith story that never got finished lol (rip)
8. have you ever received hate on a fic? holy shit poor little 13yo kath used to get OBLITERATED for my characterizations lmfaoooo please know that my attempts at writing good characterizations now come from blood, sweat, and (literal) tears
(still salty i never received hate from the sangcheng troll last year tho. they loved to attack me on twitter but NOT my fics??? i feel slighted smh)
(more below! felt it got long!!)
9. do you write smut? if so, what kind? l m f a o
anyway keep me humming, keep me going is now the second fic that has a title from beyonce's song 'blow' bc those lyrics have a chokehold on me when i write nsfw!
10. have you ever had a fic stolen? no but i've had specific passages from some really old stuff that was stolen and very obviously rewritten/paraphrased, which is. harder to prove lol
11. have you ever had a fic translated? nothing recent but a few of my old hp fics on ff.net were translated!
but omg the best time it ever happened was a year ago when i found out that not only had a 15yo fic of mine been translated (and credited!), it had also been converted into a beautiful pdf!!! complete with cover art and border art!!!! wasn't even aware it was done bc whoever did it had only done it within the last few years i think, but it was such a wild experience to find it i have the pdf saved on my laptop lol
12. have you ever co-written a fic before? i have not! i don't think i've ever had a dedicated beta either, which probably explains a lot lol
13. what's your all-time fave ship? ALTAIR/MALIK they're not even my first otp (which draco/ron and zukka still go strong, followed by clintbucky) but THEY are the ones that seize my heart like no other ship has done 🧡🧡
14. what's a fic you want to finish but don't think you ever will? the zukka ba sing se/blue spirit poetry fic 😔 which is unfortunate bc i'm still so excited to write it/there's a lot written of it, but chaptered fics are nerve-wracking lol
15. what are your writing strengths? idk if ppl necessarily like it, but i really like my writing style! sure it's obvious i write for fanfic vs anything publishable, but i enjoy that lol
also ppl tell me i'm really good at banter, characterizations, and immersing them in the story, which is wonderful bc i do work really hard on that!
16. what are your writing weaknesses? finding the right words. in general, it's so extremely hard for me in that i don't have much of a mental dictionary/thesaurus i guess. it can be upsetting at times, especially when i know there's a better word or way to phrase the line but just have to let it go. i am simply not one of those people who can come up with big words (or words that are like. normal ones to use when describing smth lol)
17. what are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages on a fic? it can be a good touch to the fic! i don't have very strong feelings on it, i suppose
18. what was the first fandom you ever wrote for? atla, tho harry potter is the one that actually survived the period of fic deletion i once went through on ff.net lol
19. what is your favorite fic ever written? everyone is going to know the answer to this one, but hmlyd hands down my actual baby <333 after a 4yr long break from writing, i knocked out 3 fics but it was hmlyd that really got me excited! writing it was a BLAST, my entire heart went into it, and it's one of my fics that i actually do genuinely go back and read frequently bc it makes me so happy lmao
tbh if i hadn't written hmlyd, i probably would've stopped writing for the fandom after hands, knees, please, tangerine and gone back to lurking lmao
(keep me humming, keep me going is a good contender tho. which goes to show that the fastest way to my heart is just inundating myself with tender competitive lovers lmao)

Fic Writer Review
Tagged by @fontainebleau22, thanks for the tag, sorry for the delay!
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
26 at the moment.
2. What’s your total AO3 wordcount?
722 309. I’d have thought it would be more considering how long some of mine seem to get, although looking at other people’s answers to this meme, I guess 26 isn’t really a huge number!
3. How many fandoms have you written for and what are they?
My first fic ever was a little Lord of the Rings experiment for an exchange thing. But my first proper dip into writing for a fandom would have been Breaking Bad, where I wrote for a couple of years before it felt like my ideas had run their course. Then there was a Kingsman fic, and then Mag7 where - similarly to BrBa - wrote feverishly for a couple years until it felt like the well had been plumbed. Oh yeah and then jumped into the Marvel fandom to drop one Marvel fic before immediately jumping back out lol.
4. What are your top five fics by kudos?
So the Marvel fic has officially just become my most kudoed fic, which is kind of hilarious considering it was a SUEZ! CANAL! FIC! But in my opinion, a good one lol. So yeah, it would be 1. The SamBucky Suez Canal fic, 2. The Kingsman soccer AU, 3. Desert Sand, 4. Chisolm’s 7, and 5. Blue Devils. That last one surprises me, but I guess it was an early one for the fandom, so I think it became an automatic read.
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not
I do! It’s possible I’ve missed some here and there, but generally I try to get them all.
6. What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?
I don’t think any of them! While my fics definitely include angst, ideally it’s still in a fun way, or at minimum, bittersweet? I don’t generally want the last taste in a reader’s mouth to be angst. ALTHOUGH. I really really wanted to include an epilogue to the selkie fic that’s kind of angsty. Basically the story would end, but then many years later we’d see an old man get off a bus on the coastal road, carrying a suitcase. He’d be wearing a suit, clearly back from many years travelling. He’d walk to the coast, back over a hill where there’d once been a little fishing cottage, long since torn down. He’d walk down to the beach and into a little cove where he’d kneel by the water he knew better than anyone. Opening the suitcase he’d take out a box which he’d then empty into the ocean, ashes spreading across the water. He’d take out a folded bundle of cloth and wrap it around his shoulders. Then he’d dive into the water, disappearing into the waves, leaving nothing but an empty suitcase behind him, and a folded pile of clothes.
I loved that ending but I’m still not 100% sure if it was keeping in tone with the actual ending, so I left it out. Maybe one day I’ll go and add it as en extra chapter snippet.
7. Do you write crossovers? If so what’s the craziest one you’ve written?
I don’t know if I’d call them ‘crossovers’ exactly, although I did stick Goody and Billy into a Some Like it Hot ‘jazz band on a train’ situation, and I also did a Breaking Bad one that used some elements of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Those feel more like ‘AUs’ though. I like situational crossovers, but I’ve never been super into fics where characters from different fandoms actually interact.
8. Have you ever received hate on a fic?
Thankfully not. The most off-putting comment I’ve gotten was someone who - despite being very complimentary - decided to make a full-on laundry list all the anachronisms in a chapter lmao, like what. Stuff like "interesting that this character used this expression when XYZ would only been invented 10 years later!” etc. I’m positive they didn’t realize how it came off, but still, that was kind of hilarious in its.....obliviousness lol. It was special.
9. Do you write smut? If so what kind?
I do. And I guess I’ve done the full spectrum of ‘fade to black’ to ‘describe every bead of sweat in pearlescent detail’. It really depends on what the fic calls for! I’ve done some I’m quite proud of tbh, but there are others I’d like to go back and have another stab at, just because they felt kinda cookie-cutter.
10. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I know of!
11. Have you ever had a fic translated?
There’ve been a couple! I can’t remember which ones specially, but I had some people asking to translate some Breaking Bad ones, and I think a Mag7 one too. I remember someone messaging to ask permission like “We love your fics in Russia!” and that was a very sweet and wild thing to hear.
12. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Yes, I wrote one with @yoporkchopsandwiches! Our Victorian opium dens Breaking Bad AU lol. I was just thinking of that recently actually and remembering how fun it was to read what the other wrote! We plotted out most of it together, and then took turns writing chapters or scenes. But of course while writing you come up with other details or ideas, so we’d then present the new chapter to the other with all the new bits added. And it was so fun to read what the other came up with like ‘omg no way didn’t see that coming/good idea!’ and then picking up their idea from there. In that sense it was almost like improv but for writers.
13. What’s your all-time favourite ship?
That I’ve written? I think I’ve had the most fun with Goodnight/Billy, partly for the time period, partly for the dynamic, but mostly for the plausibility. While I really enjoyed writing BrBa, it felt more like it came from enthusiasm for the show, not the central ship lol. Don’t get me wrong, the chemistry and its potential was extremely fun to write in a fic setting, but I don’t find I actually shipped it while watching the show itself. Whereas it’s been nice with Mag7 to write for a ship that’s actually....more believable lol.
14. What’s a wip that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?
Ugh I can’t beLIEVE I have an unfinished fic up on ao3 lol it haunts me. I was sure I was done with Goodnight/Billy, and then early quarantine last year I had a train robbers AU idea, so I posted a couple chapters. But I don’t think my heart was super in it, I was more just messing around with the idea. I don’t want to delete it, but I’m also not super motivated to finish it haha, but we’ll see what happens. But tbh I like the poem summary better than the fic itself:P
15. What are your writing strengths?
Plotting, keeping things moving, and making stories feel visual maybe? They’re almost all movies in my head anyways, so I think I have good instincts for ‘cinematic moments’.
16. What are your writing weaknesses?
I think I’m a little lazy, and also ‘end-product oriented’. In some ways it’s helpful to picture the whole fic before you write it, but sometimes it results in some scenes feeling slightly slapdash because I’m just trying to get them out to move onto the next. Like ‘everyone did everything I wanted to in this scene? Great, next.’ I could stand to ‘stop and smell the roses’ more while I write, and actually see what else I can do to improve a scene.
(also if I use a word once it sticks in my head I end up using it like 5 other times in a scene and don’t notice lol, I need to stop that)
17. What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?
All for it! Depends how it’s done though. I personally find long scenes of dialogue where you have to constantly jump down to the author’s notes for the translations to be distracting. I like when it’s integrated more naturally where actual translations aren’t super important. Like in River Grit, Billy overhears this little exchange between Goodnight and his childhood nanny:
“Ah c’est vrai, mon petit Bonsoir! J’en peux pas le croire!” she cried out and laughed as she embraced Goody. Billy realized with a start that he actually recognized one of the words: ‘Bonsoir’. Goodnight. (insert brief flashback of Goody teaching him the nickname) / “Ma Serafine,” Goodnight said with a laugh. “C’est vrai que tu ne vieillis pas. Tu vas me rendre jaloux, heh?” / Billy had no idea what Goodnight was saying, but he sure as hell recognized Goodnight’s tone for flattery, and it was confirmed when the old woman laughed and smacked his arm.
What they’re actually saying is: “Oh it’s true, my little Goodnight! I can’t believe it!” / “My Serafine, it’s true you never age. You’re going to make me jealous”. But it doesn’t matter because this fic is from Billy’s POV so it’s about how he experiences the language around him, which is why I wouldn’t have included a translation for the reader. If you understand it then it’s a bonus, but the words themselves aren’t really the point!
18. What was the first fandom you wrote for?
That lil Lord of the Rings fic.
19. What’s your favorite fic you’ve written?
Hmm for Mag7 I’ve always liked River Grit and love how it turned out. I also think Ashes feels very complete as a fic and I liked the flashback format. And while it’s not my favourite fic, in hindsight I’m impressed with the Kingsman football fic and how I had to write about 5 different soccer games and make them all feel different and exciting, and not just some variation of ‘He kicked the ball!’ I’m really pleased with how those sequences all turned out.
La fin! Not tagging anyone this time, but please feel free to do this if you see it! I love when people just take initiative to do these things without waiting for a tag (also please tag me in it if you do, ‘cause I love reading these things lol)

fic writer meme
thanks @gusu-emilu for the tag! i’m so late to this but i didn’t forget :3
@the-golden-ghost i know i’ve sent you so many of these lmao but just in case you want to do another one! also @candygothjester , @wolffyluna , @cloudheaded if you like??
How many works do you have on AO3?
81! (that’s the reverse of your number emilu lol)
What’s your total AO3 word count?
540,039 ...... this is over ~6 years but still WOW that number is big
continued under the cut because Long
How many fandoms have you written for and what are they?
according to my ao3 page, approx. 25. much of the variety comes from crossovers (steven universe, mob psycho 100, and uzumaki are all on there just because i crossed them over with the magnus archives) and also because i used to write fic for a shit ton of different shakespeare plays lmao
i won’t list all the fandoms on my page, but the top 5 are mdzs/cql, the magnus archives, homestuck, hamlet, and kirby. technically star trek should be there too but i never put any of my star trek fic on ao3
(i’m quite liking the range of the top 5... especially since i’ve got a novel/tv show, podcast, multimedia webcomic, play, and video game series!)
What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
spacetime, sexuality, and other complex conundrums (547 kudos) - a very long homestuck canon divergence au in which one character is thrown back in time and forced to repeat a very long and very boring portion of canon. except it isn’t boring in this fic, because it’s full of awkward teenage love triangles, which eventually result in polyamory. this is still the longest single thing i’ve written lol
greatest warriors (318) - kirby fic! it’s an enemies-to-lovers fic with meta knight and galacta knight, and it’s also about meta knight dealing with his post-mind-control trauma (sometimes pretty poorly). there’s homoerotic swordfighting and lots of lore speculation. i have made so many friends through this fic it’s insane (and really cool!)
closed eyes and open arms (296) - fun fluffy get-together fic for ed and ling from fmab, set during a time period that canon skips over. i don’t think this is my most unique or creative fic but it’s sweet! and it was fun to write
too hard a knot for me to untie (248) - another homestuck one. fairly generic first kiss/get-together fic (though with shakespeare references, which was fun)
nothing beside remains (244) - mdzs! my “xue yang sacrifices himself to bring back xiao xingchen” fic! i’m so glad this is up here because i’m very proud of it :D
Do you respond to comments, why or why not?
most of them! i always love when authors respond to my comments, so i try to do the same
What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?
almost certainly stand at the pit’s mouth, which ends with mo xuanyu’s (canon) death after he’s just spent 9k words panicking about whether or not he wants to die after all. fun fact: my mom read this and told me it was so devastating she was thinking about it for days and days afterward, so... success?
Do you write crossovers? If so, what is the craziest one you’ve written?
yes! i’ve been writing crossovers ever since i’ve been writing fic. i think the two fandoms i’ve crossed stuff over with most are star trek and the magnus archives. especially memorable are the star trek + shakespeare’s tempest one i wrote (for a school project!), magnus archives + steven universe, and, my personal favorite, this one that’s tagged with “the adventure zone” and “philosophy rpf.”
Have you ever received hate on a fic?
not HATE per se, but i’ve gotten a couple comments along the lines of “this is a cool fic; here’s a list of things i like and a list of things i didn’t like.” which feels kind of rude to comment on a fic lol, even if it is sometimes cool to see people’s honest opinion. like.. some of it was good constructive criticism, but it’s not the best practice to offer concrit out of the blue
Do you write smut? if so what kind?
yeah......
oh god the tones of all my smutty works are VASTLY different, but i guess i could say that a throughline is that most of it involves characters who aren’t really romantically involved? either they’re friends, enemies, or somewhere straddling the line... i just like using smut to complicate relationship dynamics!
Have you ever had a fic stolen?
not to my knowledge..
Have you ever had a fic translated?
not yet, but i recently got a comment from someone asking if they could translate one of my ningxian fics into russian!
Have you ever co-written a fic before?
i wrote a couple star trek/star wars crossovers with a friend once in middle school lmao... idk i probably still have those lying around somewhere
What’s your all time favorite ship?
i cannot possibly choose an “all time favorite” because i switch between a lot pretty rapidly (and my tastes change over time!) but rn i’m really feeling xuexiao :3 it’s about the COMPLEXITY
What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?
gonna limit myself to just things that are on ao3 but - a cross-country guide to diplomacy and babysitting, which is a fmab post-canon road trip fic! i had like a whole plot and everything... maybe if i ever go back to fmab fic (and i’m sure i will) i’ll finish it but hmmm we shall see
What are your writing strengths?
i’m pretty good at angst! making people feel devastated! but sometimes in like a cathartic way? also i’d like to think i’ve been steadily improving at incorporating humor into my fics but i have yet to receive feedback on that
also i’m good at wacky surreal shit hehe
What are your writing weaknesses?
this is probably something all writers feel about their own work, but sometimes i feel like my prose can get very same-y and everything i write sounds the same lmao
also, longer plots where there’s tension beyond just misunderstandings & interpersonal (/psychological) drama - those are tricky. i go for a very specific type of conflict in my fics usually!
What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?
not sure about dialogue, but in cdrama/cnovel fic i like when authors use the chinese titles!
What was the first fandom you wrote for?
star trek!
...well i did write angry birds fanfic once for a school project when i was about 8 but that’s beside the point
What’s your favorite fic you’ve written?
again, impossible to say, but i do love stand at the pit’s mouth

Fic Writer Interview
Thank you to @sapphosewrites for tagging me!
Name: Vermin
Fandoms: Currently Star Trek, and DS9 specifically has eaten my brain. But I’ve been in and out of fandom for the past 20 years, so there have been many. I’ve more often been an avid reader and lurker than an active participant, though. The last fandom I was most actively involved in (and wrote the most fic for) was Life on Mars (UK), and that was a while ago. Other fandoms have included: Good Omens, Due South, Sherlock Holmes, and of course my very first gateway fandom, Harry Potter.
Where you post: AO3 and Tumblr. You can still find a lot of my older fic posted on my LJ, although I don’t post there anymore. Every once in a blue moon I get a notification from FF.net and am momentarily reminded that I still technically have an account there (though I can’t remember the last time I used it).
Most popular one-shot: That depends on your definition of a one-shot, lol. My top fic in terms of kudos is False Friends and False Prophets, which is technically part of a series (Where No Occult [or Ethereal] Being Has Gone Before), but then again, all the works in that series are written to work as standalones while existing within a shared crossover universe. If we exclude those then the next option is Freedom’s Just Another Word, except that while that is not currently listed as part of the This Be The Verse series (for thematic reasons), it is based on a flashback in Tell Me You See Me and I do consider it part of that universe, even though it can be read independently.
So I guess my most popular indisputable one-shot would be my first Garak/Bashir fic, Bound in Shallows and in Miseries.
Most popular multichapter: Tell Me You See Me (not that I have a lot to choose from)
Favorite story you’ve written so far: This was more difficult than I expected! Here are the ones that particularly stand out in my mind:
Tin Star (Life on Mars, 2009): Not counting a few drabbles, this was my second work for LoM. The first one, Convergence, is from the POV of a character who doesn’t appear onscreen in canon (and probably doesn’t exist), so Tin Star was my first real attempt at writing the POV of one main cast. I found the idea of writing Gene Hunt pretty intimidating, and was (and still am) very pleased with how this came out. Also, my favorite LoM writer, @lozenger8, beta-read it and told me it was awesome, and 11 years later I still feel all warm and fuzzy about this.
Mater Familias (I, Claudius, 2009): My first and longest work of I, Claudius fanfiction, written for a once annual ficathon on LJ called Femgenficathon (shoutout to @gehayi who modded it - it was a great event). I’m not entirely sure why I landed on this particular idea. I’d been joking about writing IC fic for years, but if you’d asked me prior to writing this what characters I’d most like to write about, Antonia the Younger wouldn’t have been high on the list. But once the idea occurred to me, I really relished delving into Antonia’s psyche. I’m also fond of this fic because there’s so little IC fic out there, and I’m rather pleased to have contributed something. (There was a point a few years ago when there were 6 works of I, Claudius fic on AO3 and 4 of them were by me.)
On the Benefits of a Classical Education (Jeeves & Wooster, 2012) – To quote my author’s note: “at about 1:00 a.m. after a round of grading undergraduate papers, I reached that point of giddy insanity where the idea of writing one's grading comments in Wodehousian pastiche seems like basically the funniest thing, ever. My coping mechanisms, let me show you them.” This is definitely one of the weirdest and silliest things I’ve written, but it still makes me grin when I reread it. (Yes, I do laugh at my own jokes.)
On Transmutation [and Tortoises] (Good Omens, 2011): As someone who has studied (and now teaches) evolutionary theory, I got a big kick out of writing about evolution in a universe where creationism is canon. Not to mention telling jokes about Darwin riding tortoises. (I make a point of reading that particular passage in The Voyage of the Beagle to my students.) And I owe @anthean some credit for giving me the prompt that produced this. :)
Writ in Water (Sherlock Holmes [ACD], 2015): This is essentially an interplay between two brilliant people trying to suss each other out while avoiding talking about their own respective existential crises. There’s no romance between them – it’s just Sherlock Holmes and Irene Adler having a meandering conversation while meandering around Rome, after an accidental meeting during the Great Hiatus. My characterization of Irene Adler came out of my dissatisfaction with her characterization in recent adaptations. I think I started c. 2011, and I didn’t finish it until years later. There’s a lot of self-indulgence in this one. I majored in Classic Civ and spent a semester abroad in Rome, and my love for the city is pretty evident throughout. It’s littered with references to ancient history, there’s some gratuitous poetry, and the climax is set in the Protestant Cemetery, which is one of my favorite places in the city.
I honestly think it’s one of the best things I’ve ever written.
This Be The Verse (Star Trek: DS9, 2020): This fic is about my strained relationship with kidfic as a genre lol. I periodically get the urge to binge-read all the kidfic for a particular fandom/pairing, but then I usually end up being disappointed by most of it. So this started with me idly contemplating why kidfic often doesn’t work for me (and why I keep reading it anyway). And because of my current fandom preoccupation, this inevitably involved taking a hard look at the delightfully dysfunctional DS9 cast and wondering just what sort of parents they would be, and how their flaws might affect their children, and how the found family aspects of the show might manifest in the next generation. (Not sure how all this idle speculation ended up spiraling so wildly out of control, but here we are, and now I am just overflowing with ideas for this universe.)
I’m not 100% satisfied with all of this fic, but the epilogue is definitely one of my favorite things I’ve ever written. It also has a special place in my heart for being the first multichapter fic I’ve ever finished. (And the first one I’ve posted since I was in high school.)
Fics you were nervous to post: I used to get nervous about all of it (less so, these days). But one of the ones I was most nervous about was probably Convergence, which was my first substantial work in Life on Mars (I’d only written a couple of drabbles prior to this). I was really nervous about writing for LoM, because the setting and the dialogue style were pretty far outside my wheelhouse. Being a 21-year-old Californian, 1970s Mancunian copper slang wasn’t exactly part of my day-to-day vocabulary. (Oh, hey, I’d totally forgotten that you beta-read this for me, @sunnyrea!)
How do you choose your titles: I tend to gravitate to quotes (usually poetry or song lyrics) and/or wordplay of some kind. Sometimes I just pick out a significant word or phrase from the fic itself.
Do you outline: Frequently, although I rarely stick to my outlines religiously.
Complete: Nearly everything I have on AO3 is complete
In progress: Just counting posted WIPs, there’s Tell Me You See Me and Attack of the Giant Mutant Killer Rabbits
Prompts: Sure, but you have to come write them on my shower notepad. ;)
Upcoming work you’re most excited about: I have a number of ideas for additional works set in my This Be The Verse AU, but the one I’ve already written a substantial amount of (~13,000 words) is tentatively titled A Bag Full of God. This I originally had saved as ‘The Other Kind of Kidfic,’ although that’s misleading: it is de-aging fic, but they’re de-aged to 19-year-olds, so they’re not technically kids. It’s one that starts off fairly comedic and then gets progressively darker.
Worlds I would love to write for in the future: No idea. Fandoms tend to sneak up on me. But I have a feeling I’ll be stuck in the ST universe for a while. There’s just so much to play with, there. And I’ve found the fandom a very hospitable place to hang out in both on and offline (talked to a lot of lovely people at ST Las Vegas when I was there a few years ago, for instance). That said, I wouldn’t mind trying my hand at writing more Sherlock Holmes fic some day. (I have a thing for old school fandoms, apparently.)
Tagging everyone I’ve already tagged in this and anyone else who wants to fill it out!

an interview with @queenemori (she/hers)
what are you working on right now? I recently started posting We Don’t Need To Say It, which is a multi-chap Memori actor AU. It’s a slow burn, don’t ask me how I looked at Murphy and Emori and decided to write a slow burn, but it’s what’s happening. I really do mean slow, the chapter I just finished writing is only the beginning of the angst, you’ve been warned. My beta tells me she hates me at least once a chapter if you want an idea of how angsty this is gonna get. I started out writing for Bellarke in this fandom, and I’ll be going back to that later this summer. Anyone who follows me knows I’m obsessed with Emma, and I have an Emma Bellarke AU that’s in the outlining stages currently. I’m hoping to work on it more once I get further into this Memori fic.
what’s something you’d like to write one day? The fic I’m working on now is actually the thing that I was like, “I want to write that one day”. I love actor AUs and I wanted to write one for some fandom at some point, and in January I got this idea, but I was working on other stuff, so I was like, well maybe I’ll write it this summer. And now I am! Though I would like to write something featuring dad!Murphy in the near future.
what is the fanwork you’re most proud of? It’s actually one I haven’t published yet! I participated in Bellarke Big Bang this year, and I wrote a soulmates rom-com fic. I’m excited to share it soon once we get the go-ahead, and the artist I got to work with @clarkeindra has made some amazing art to go with it! For ones that you can actually go physically read, I will say You’re Already Breaking My Heart. It was my first fic I wrote for t100 fandom, and also the first thing I wrote after a really long time of just not writing anything, so I’m proud of it for getting me back into something I love and I’m glad that other people seemed to enjoy it. It’s what got me more into this fandom in the first place and how I made some of my first friends.
why did you first start writing fic? I got more into writing around the time I started college, though I always used to write little stories. There were a few times I almost wrote fanfic before then, like the time I almost wrote a Glee fic in ninth grade, or the time my junior year of high school where I almost wrote a Downton Abbey fic where Sybil and Branson were pen pals while Sybil was on her nurses course in season 2. But the summer before college, I wanted to write, and didn’t have any ideas for characters, but I had just read a really amazing next-gen Harry Potter fic called “Potters, Weasleys, and Misguided Snogging” which made me ship Scorpius Malfoy and Lily Luna Potter, or Scorily. So I started writing a couple stories specifically for that ship, back when I still used FF.net. It was just a one-shot and a multi-chap I never finished, but it was fun to interact with people and get to hear what they liked about the story and that they hoped I continued it, so I guess I caught the fic writing bug then.
what frustrates you most about fic writing? I wish people would leave more kudos. I’ve had this discussion with some friends before where they’re like, “What makes you leave kudos on a fic?” and I leave kudos on most fics I read, so it’s very interesting to hear people say they don’t do that as liberally as I do. If I made it to the end of the story, I’m probably going to leave kudos. The writer kept me engaged long enough to get to the end, which I think is worthy of showing some sort of support, even if I don’t leave a comment. Though I am trying to get better about leaving comments more often. Kudos are a very low stakes way to show you like a story that someone put out. Afraid to comment, but want to show the author you enjoyed reading? Leave kudos. A couple of stories I have out have gotten a fair amount of hits, but the amount of kudos in comparison to the amount of people who have probably opened it is a little disheartening. I’ve also heard people say they don’t want to leave kudos on stories that have been out for a while, but I love to get kudos on my old work! It’s fun to see that people are still reading things I put out in like 2017 or even just last year. Kudos brighten my day just as much as comments do sometimes, especially when I know not everyone feels comfortable leaving a comment!
what are your top five songs right now? The answer to this is 98% always related to what I’m listening to when I’m working on a certain writing project lol.
Sweet by Cigarettes After Sex Heartbreak Weather by Niall Horan I Will Follow You into the Dark by Death Cab for Cutie Bye-Bye Darling by Borns Fire for You by Cannons
what are your inspirations? Red, White & Royal Blue, since I read that recently. It honestly just made me want to write a movie, and I kind of hope that whatever TV or movie adaptation it ends up getting in the future I’m able to work on. I want to be a screenwriter, so I tend to get inspired by TV a lot. The Mindy Project, Insecure, and even Never Have I Ever are big inspirations for me. Or more like, anything that Issa Rae or Mindy Kaling are involved in, to be honest. I write a lot of modern AUs, so just anything that shows good relationship progression or has fun with mundane, everyday situations.
what first attracted you to Memori? what attracts you now? So fun fact, I stopped watching the show for a bit. I binged basically two seasons in a weekend while visiting a friend in like 2017, and I enjoyed it, but I wasn’t obsessed? Then I started s3 and a bunch of characters were getting on my nerves so I put it down for a while. Then I was on Tumblr at the beginning of 2019 and saw a gifset from 3x05 of Murphy and Emori kissing and I was kind of like, “That guy’s still alive? And he has a girlfriend?” So I started watching again, legit only because I was shook Murphy had survived lol. So the thing that first attracted me to them was just the fact that they were a couple at all, I guess. I’d say now that I’ve rewatched the show and seen their relationship develop, I love that these are two people who have always had to fend for themselves and kind of had that “me against the world” mentality. And then they find this other person that cares about them and wants to take care of them, and life becomes a lot less lonely. Also now we get to see their relationship after years together, so they’re very domestic, which adds this lovely sense of normalcy on this post-apocalyptic sci-fi show that I absolutely adore. Their interactions especially in s7 just read as a married couple who are very comfortable with each other, but still incredibly devoted to one another and in love.
Besides Memori, what character or pairing do you like best on t100? For ships, I also really like Bellarke. When I was more casually watching the first time around, I didn’t have much of an opinion on them/didn’t really ship it until season 4, but ever since then I’ve been on board. It’s very clear I’m a huge Memori person, but I do ship Murven, though mainly in AU settings. And Memoraven are my OT3!! My other fave character is Bellamy. And I feel like Gabriel has also quickly become a favorite for me. It’s definitely a mixture of his confused, but obsessed with science vibe on the show and the fact that he has been very fun to write in my actor AU when he makes appearances every so often.
why did you decide to start writing for bellarkefic-for-blm? Ever since I’ve been home due to the pandemic, writing has kind of been my escape. Weirdly enough, I’ve written so much (both fic and some real life stuff), even though I’m still working and everything like that. And when the BLM movement was getting a lot of traction specifically in our fandom spaces, I was immediately skeptical of people’s intentions because as a Black person in America specifically I’ve seen this happen before where all the attention is on this issue for a couple weeks and then everyone goes back to posting what they normally post about. And I guess this time things are a bit different, but the thing that began to frustrate me was seeing people shame others for saying they were going to watch the next episode of the show or for working on their fanfic. Fandom spaces have been my biggest escape from the news since March and while I was glad people were focusing on this sort of thing, I kind of hated the way people were making it out to be like this was a new issue when in reality it’s just my life. When I close my laptop and go out into the world, I’m still Black. I had considered opening my ask box up for prompts in exchange for someone donating to a bail fund or something like that, especially since I had just reached a follower milestone, but when I saw that Sam was organizing this and it was going to be an ongoing thing rather than just for a certain period of time, it was heartening to see someone realizing that this isn’t something we can just stop talking about even when the media moves on. The structure of these prompts makes it so that a person has to do a bit of research on BLM and educate themselves or confront the issue in a way they might not have had to before. And it gives me a chance to write things like my fluffy Memori wedding fic ! It’s a way to have my little fandom escape and also stay aware of what’s going on in the real world.
what’s your writing process like (esp for prompts, chopped!, etc)? I LOVE outlines! The Virgo in me loves to talk about my fic outlining process lol. With some short one-shots, I tend to just go in with a sentence or concept that I write at the top of the document and just write and see where that takes me. I also put at the top of the document all the things I want to tag it as when I go to post to AO3, so I don’t have to spend too much time thinking of those when it’s time to post. With multi-chap fics, I first make an ideas dump document which is just me typing out a bunch of thoughts, things like who’s in it, the premise, stuff like that. My actor AU has three preliminary documents: My ideas dump, the actual outline, and then the outline for what happens on each season of the TV show the characters are all on, since I reference those plot points a lot. For things like Chopped or prompts I receive, I do a mixture of the outline/ideas dump in one document. I put at the top all the information I received (so with prompts I tend to just copy/paste the ask from my inbox, and for Chopped the different tropes and theme), then think about what characters I want to use if it wasn’t specified, then kind of do bullet points on what happens in the story. These have all been really helpful in terms of keeping me on track, but I make sure to remind myself that things can change as I write and take a different direction than I expected. So my outlines are constantly changing, but the general idea is already written somewhere so I don’t get too stuck.
what are your thoughts on dad!murphy? The concept of dad!Murphy has really been living rent-free in my brain since before the beginning of season 7. I just kind of love the idea of Murphy (who is a character at first glance I feel like people don’t picture as much of a father figure) kind of falling into being a dad in an unexpected way, and then realizing how much he loves it. It’s just such a sweet thought, and I talked about it so much with some of my friends, that we started a Dad!Murphy Enthusiast Club server on discord (we’re always accepting members so DM me if you’d like to join us!). We just kind of talk about our dad!Murphy headcanons, share fics featuring dad!Murphy, and then get excited when people make new dad!Murphy content. It’s a fun time and though I am a very large Memori, I’m a multi-shipper at heart, and Murphy is one of those characters that I find easy to ship with a lot of people, so we love dad!Murphy in all forms!
what are some things you’d like to recommend?  This is a mix of Bellarke and Memori stuff, since that’s what I mainly read.
Literally everything @mobi-on-a-mission writes, but if I must get specific, then Revive and The Cockroach.
Almost Paradise (We’re Knocking On Heaven’s Door)  by @nakey-cats-take-bathsss , 13 hours by Kats_watermelon, feat. by Debate, and of course, my comfort fic so i sing a song of love  by twilightstargazer.
The best place to find @queenemori is here on Tumblr. You can find her ao3 here. Request a fic written by her via @bellarkefic-for-blm.

Top 5/Bottom 5 Kudos
Tagged by @eyessharpweaponshot @arysafics @biblarke @bookwormforalways thanks guys 😀
This was an interesting exercise, especially since my AO3 fics are now about ⅓ The 100, ⅓ between Brooklyn Nine-Nine & Sanditon and the last ⅓ all one-offs for exchanges mostly in small fandoms. Unsurprisingly my top 5 are all Bellarke fics, and the bottom 5 aren’t, but it wasn’t all what I thought they would be.
What are your five most popular works by kudos? (in descending order)
1. The Wonderful Mess We Made: 704 kudos [WIP 124k, Bellarke, T rating]
My very first The 100 fic that’s a bit of an Arrowverse adaptation with superhero!Clarke & Jasper, Monty and Raven as part of the team and lawyer!Bellamy. There’s drama, secret identities and enemies to friends to lovers (though not always in the right order).
I feel bad that this has been on hold for so long once again, but for the few people left who haven’t lost their interest after another break I promise I really haven’t abandoned it!
Tbh I think the reason this is top is because I started it after the first season so it’s been seen by a lot of readers over the time, even if they’re not all following it still.
2. Hearts Are Only Strangers After All: 644 kudos [Complete 88k, Bellarke, T rating]
Historical AU + marriage of convenience (my favourite trope) + mystery + magic AU
My only super long Bellarke fic that is complete (atm). Occasionally I think I could have done certain aspects of the plot better now, but I did what I wanted to do with their relationship in it, so I’m still very fond of it.
3. Intimacy: 529 kudos [Complete 8k, Bellarke, M rating]
Regency AU arranged marriage crack where Clarke is struggling to seduce her husband.
A little bit of fun from a KM prompt that was far more popular than I expected! It seems nowadays if people in The 100 fandom have read one of my fics it’s this one, though I guess that’s on-brand with the amount of period-setting fics I’m writing nowadays.
4. If The Right One Came Along: 479 kudos [WIP 72k, Bellarke, M rating]
Modern AU where Celebrity!Bellamy returns home and reconnects with old friend librarian!Clarke which leads to FWB.
This is very nearly finished! Just some edits on C11 to complete before I can post that and then an epilogue to write. I wanted to write something soft that was mostly just about them hanging out without much drama (partly for a break from the complicated mystery/drama I had given myself in TWMWM and HAOSAA) and I think I managed to make it not too boring lol.
5. Birds of a feather: 466 kudos [Complete 6k, Bellarke, T rating]
Five times Clarke was caught wearing Bellamy's clothes, and one time she wasn't.
Just a little Bellarke modern AU fluff, I think it’s so high because it’s from five years ago.
What are your five least popular works by kudos? (in ascending order)
1. Maps For the Getaway: 14 kudos [Complete 1k, One Tree Hill - Jake/Peyton, T rating]
Canon Divergence of s1 where Peyton joins Jake and Jenny on the road
Many years ago before AO3 I used to write Nathan/Haley quite regularly but I was fond of Jake/Peyton. Tbh I had forgotten I had written this treat fic, but I was happy with how this turned out, though I’m not surprised so few people found an OTH fic posted in 2016.
2. Blue Sky Thinking: 21 kudos [Complete 1k, Better Off Ted - Gen, G rating]
Episode-style/comedy fic, more Veridian Dynamics shenanigans featuring the gang.
One of my fastest ever writes, this was a pinch hit for Yuletide exchange in 2018 that I only picked up a few days before the deadline but I was actually quite happy with it. I still miss Better Off Ted!
3. Antiquities and Curiosities: 29 kudos [Complete 4k, Lois Lane: Fallout (Gwenda Bond YA book series), G rating]
Lois is on a school trip to Gotham and meets Batman.
I wish I knew more people who have read this book series as it’s so much fun! I enjoyed writing this adventure for Lois though I would have included more of Clark and other book characters if I’d had more time.
4. We’ve Got A Love: 31 kudos [Complete 2k, Hart of Dixie - Zoe/Wade, G rating]
Post-series fluff of parents Zoe & Wade and Uncle Lavon.
I loved this show but I had never tried my hand at writing for it at the time it aired. It was fun to revisit for this piece.
5. A Little Encouragement: 33 kudos [Complete 2k, Cranford - Mary/Jack, G rating]
Post-series fic where Mary meets Dr. Marshland again.
Still one of my favourite period drama series, I might need to rewatch! I think I’m better at writing period/historical fic now than I was when I wrote this, but I tried.

Top 5 fic sorted by kudos on AO3
I got tagged by the wonderful @timeforalongstory
 1.  And if you can't walk, you fucking crawl (527) (SWTFA)
Poe Dameron survived Kylo Ren. He survived the crash. He survived the desert.
He survived. Period. In pain and somewhat worse for wear, but he survived. And it's not over yet.
There are a thousand versions of how everything began and how it ended with Poe sitting next to a hospital bed, waiting for a hero to wake up. But this is the middle. The part he doesn't tell. Where he keeps going until he drops.
My first fic that ever got 500 kudos. Just a little character study of Poe Dameron.
2.  Lineage (422) (SWTFA)
What made a good father?
One question that Kylo Ren had never asked himself, not even... after.
But then he met Brendol Hux Sr. and learned a few things; what a bad father was like, for one, and that Hux had a son.
Part 1 of Legacy and one of my favorites, too.
3.  Heart of Broken Glass (303) (SWTFA)
Hux wakes with his body trapped, entangled in sweat soaked sheets, screams of pain and terror still reverberating in his mind.
He turns and as he sits, for one second, he thinks he sees a faint blue figure cross past his man high dressing mirror.
A blink later it's gone.
The same dream. The same sweat drenched nameless horror as every night the past week.
Kylo Ren has gone to finish his training while Hux is left behind to sort out the mess. It is what he is best at, after all.
Then the nightmares start.
With the wonderful @pkabyssinian
I know, we still owe you the last chapter and that is wholly on me. PK already wrote it and I just need to find the motivation to edit :(
4.  Not really scandalous (The Magnificent 7) (279)
Kink meme prompt:
After some time traveling together Billy/Goody casually reveal their relationship. The others are all cool with it and in an attempt to show how cool he is with them Faraday mentions that he had sex with a guy once but then mentions something about how he doesn't know how Billy/Goody can stand it because his one time he was left bleeding/too sore to ride for days/some comment about how hurt he was but he obviously thinks is supposed to be normal.
Everyone kinda laughs it off but Goody/Billly are low-key horrified because they know sex isn't supposed to be painful. Cue them including Faraday for a night.
So... that one was wholly unexpected. I actually, I swear, only wanted to write porn. This is what happened.
5.  Let go (of everything you fear to lose) (SWTFA) (219)
With Ren having left for the Resistance, Hux has pretty much given up on his ability to care. He does his job because it's his job, and takes care of his duty because it's his duty.
Until Snoke pulls his last trump card and suddenly the question of whether or not Hux cares, and for what, becomes vital to the Galaxy. Or, rather, for whom.
Part 2 of Legacy.
This, right there, is my absolute, personal favorite. I bled and cried while writing this fic. Mostly out of performance anxiety and frustration. But I think, it’s my best to date and I am glad, it made the list.
Ok, apparently, I write a lot of Star Wars. lol.
@acroamatica @favomancer @deliriumexmachina @hazel-athena @villa-kulla
