Percy Jackson episode 7 spoilers!!!
First of all, that cliff hanger is more cruel than the actual cliffhanger...okay maybe not but you get the point.
- WE GOT CRUSTY'S. If I'm honest though I wasn't really disappointed when I thought he wasn't in it.
- I am sad we didn't get DOA records but the fact that they didn't fare with Charon tells me DOA does still exist they just used a different entrance so I'm hoping for it to be used in a different season. Would be funny if Nico used it in the 5th season with Percy.
- Annabeth's "Dude, don't make me come back out there!" Tell him, WiseGirl!
- Oh my god Percy and Sally at his first boarding school is so sad but when I tell you I cheered when he locked that car door! Persassy at his finest.
- "not in Kansas" "Hey focus, we left kansas four days ago." "Yeah, I-" so it's basically Canon they were going to see the Wizard of Oz in BotL then yeah??
- Percy is so polite with all the souls! "We're all dying...to some extent."
- The boys bribing Charon and Annabeth is staring at them like they are about to get them in trouble again.
- "You can buy a new whistle" I cackled
- AWW CERBERUS...I mean Ahhhh Cerberus!
- Annabeth is so smart but Grover getting eaten?? Was scared he wouldn't come back.
- I feel bad for Aryan being covered in that gloopy stuff that looked gross.
- She just chucks Percy the ball to get herself up! INGENIUS!
- Aww Annabeth's little sad backstop moment and Percy wasn't even listening!
- The way Grover lost the pearl is very clever! I wasn't expecting that but it makes more sense than Poseidon forgetting about Sally.
- New Information?!?!? Mate you could have sent an email!!!! I'm sorry but maybe the fact he was on the school gymnasium roof probably suggests that the school wasn't keeping a good enough watch on him!!! Report the school!!!
- HOMESCHOOL??!?!?! Of course Sally can't do that she's barely able to support her, Percy, and Gabe as is! But Percy seeing all of that is so sad.
- That soul is terrifying I never want to watch the fields of Asphodel scene again (I've watched it four times)
- Annabeth getting stuck because of her regret (which I'm assuming is regret leaving home) I was scared for her. Completely forgot about the pearl.
- I really thought the sound were going to do some Weeping Angel level scary stuff.
- She's so smart using the pearl
- I thought the desert was another dream sequence but nope! How did I forget!
- Sad we didn't get the tartar sauce line but I'm also glad we didn't.
- I am convinced they only came off of Grover's hooves because he has hooves and not feet. If his foot filled the shoe properly he would have been dragged to Kronos.
- "is this?" "No!" "Well it looks like-" "it absolutely is not" "Okay, so what is it then?" "Yeah that's the master bolt." "I mean, I think so right??" I love how they show it takes them longer to get to the truth without Annabeth.
- return the bolt ❌️ Take the bolt to the person you think stole it ✅️
- The café scene is so sad what! "I would never do this to you." Has me sobbing. my favourite thing about the show is all the extra scenes we're getting that explains how difficult it was for Sally to raise Percy, it just adds to why there's so many year-round campers.
- that elevator is badass
- I love how Hades tries to connect with Percy with the nautical reference. He's so funny. I want a scene in season 4 or 5 of Nico just ranting in Italian and Hades sat on his thrown like "Yeah yeah I know."
- PERCY DEFINITELY PANICKED SEEING HIS MUM IM GOLD BECAUSE WHEN HE WAS IN GOLD HE ALMOST SUFFOCATED TO DEATH AND SALLY HAS BEEN LIKE THIS FOR FAR LONGER. HE'S PANICING THAT SALLY IS EXPERIENCING WHAT HE DID.
- "huh?"..."the bolt is my brothers drama I don't want anything to do with it." Spoken like a true middle child.
- "my helm!" "Your what?" So funny. Percy knows loads of stuff about Greek mythology but not about the helm.
- Oh my god, the way this is setting Annabeth up to be the traitor??? The helm turns people invisible like her hat. Percy realised he was supposed to be dragged to Tartarus, which would make sense why she saved him from the chair...he knows someone partnered with Ares, and both Annabeth and Ares were upset with Athena when Ares arrived!! Kind of suspicious...
- "Kronos." chills.
- Hades helping them in exchange for the bolt makes sense now because he only wants to defend his land. He's thinking he's the closest to Tartarus, so he will experience his father's wrath first and therefore needs the strongest weapon.
- "Nice pearl?"
- "Hold fast mum."
- Sally burning the milkshake as an offering is so smart but WHAT CAFÉ HAS MATCHED IN THE SUGAR BOWL?!?!?
- The way Poseidon just turned up because Sally needed him <3 (couldn't do that for Percy though could you mate?)
- "it's a him, he saw it." I cackled.
- Poseidon and Sally having that kind of relationship where they put feelings aside to help the other person. It's giving besties with a child.
- "one day...one day when he's ready...when he knows who he is...and where he belongs...and fate has revealed to him his true path...and that day..." And that day is next Wednesday because surprise! Its a cliff hanger! And the end of the episode!
- The way they looked at eachother when they realised what was about to happen though has set them up to be such a perfect trio.
- I will never get over how cool Ares is!
- And riptide/anaklusmos (which for non book readers is the name of Percy's sword) looked so sick.
This episode was so good and I'm so glad it wasn't like a 25 minute episode. Even though the actual content only took 36 minutes, it felt well spaced and gave time to understand what was happening. I am a little teensy bit worried for how the last episode will go as there's quite a lot to cram in. They have to find the Helm and fight Ares and then they have to return to camp so I'm a little bit worried but I have faith that Rick, Aryan, Leah and Walker will pull it off.

Cabin Pressure Advent Day 4: Douz
DOUZZZZZ!!!
OK so after my previous posts, where I was like "well these episodes aren't fully baked yet but soon we'll get to Douz which is where it gets really good," I kind of knew that I'd have to describe WHY I think that once I got here. So here's my attempt.
First of all, that's not to say that this is fully matured Cabin Pressure. The show builds and builds on itself and in my opinion consistently gets better. But I do think that Douz has some things that the prior episodes don't:
The obvious one is that we first see the cracks in MJN Air. Carolyn is vulnerable for the first time on the show (and TBH probably the first time ever? lol) and we now know not only that Carolyn's a bit of a tartar about money, but that she has to be to keep the company going.
Plus, Douglas now knows what the real stakes are, because now HIS job is on the line too- so he can't just mess around as easily with Martin anymore to sabotage him in revenge, like he did here by planting the idea in Martin's head that Jutteau was trying to scam him and sitting back to await the disaster. There's a boundary now- his revenge or hijinks can't risk the operation of the airline. We also now know that it's not just that there's a general power struggle and Douglas tends to be pretty sneaky- we know that Douglas is the guy who always has a plan, and that's a role he's going to stay in for the rest of the show.
A lot of this does end up coming down to Yves Jutteau just being kind of an amazing cartoon villain, and that's one of the great things that allows the zaniness of the plot to work. Not to ruminate excessively over Cremona, but that one fell flat to me plot wise, partly because it felt just a bit too complicated and contrived. The Douz plot is less complicated (it also doesn't have a B plot, besides for Arthur taking the airline photo, but everything has more space to breathe), and I think it's paced a bit better so that it feels like a relatively natural setup, but in some ways the ending is equally unlikely, if not more so- why is it a massive legality problem to take off but not to DRIVE AN AIRPLANE ON A HIGHWAY?! (After looking on Google Maps, Douz to Qibili is moving AWAY from the desert TOWARD more populated areas, so it seems kind of risky.) That's where Jutteau is so brilliant, and Hester Macaulay fell short- she was just an unpleasant woman, and Jutteau is a cackling adversary- and incidentally also played HILARIOUSLY by John Sessions. When you're dealing with the fallout for a situation involving a normal-scale unpleasant woman, you expect that fallout to feel normal-scaled; when your adversary is a veritable comic book baddie, the big daring escape can feel more cartoonish in scope.
So basically what we have now is- the show's still growing and changing, but now we know that the existence of this airline is going to be the thing that drives them forward. (Well, not Martin, exactly, because as of two episodes ago he was looking for other jobs- but he's always going to do his best anyway, and we don't know yet that he's not being paid here.) Douglas and Carolyn, both VERY strong personalities, know that they will sometimes have to sublimate themselves for the sake of the airline- which is basically doing that for each other and for the other members of the team. (Arthur, of course, benefits from this because we already kind of know that this is the sort of guy who's living his best life and that shouldn't be fucked up for him.)
Which means that something really important has had ground laid here- the idea that they all need each other, rely on each other, and are all identified with this airline/airdot. And where would the rest of the show be without that?
Also, at some point this will stop being the kind of thing that's specifically noticeable to point out, but Benedict Cumberbatch by now has gotten veritably enthusiastic in the credits! It's very fun.

Cryptid of the Week: Mongolian Death Worm
All in all, it's a giant worm that lives in the Gobi desert. Some accounts give it acid or venom that it uses to hunt its prey-- humans and livestock-- and some accounts even give it powers of electroshock. Its size seems to differ depending on the account.
If something about this seems familiar-- well. Tremors and Dune have their own versions of the Mongolian Death Worm, and the Krayt Dragons from Star Wars seem pretty similar, too (not to mention the Alaskan Bull Worm from Spongebob).
In recent years many have tried to find proof that this monster exists, some speculating that it might be a worm lizard or the Tartar Sand Boa. Still, whether it's real or not, there hasn't been hard proof of its existence.
As the X-Files puts it... the truth is out there

Tell me about valentine. (I was the spell anon)
Valentine is a die hard Octarian soldier, on the way to be an elite, despite being younger and in a smaller sector, they already has a presence of squadron commander, they’re often used for intelligence missions and other stealth advancements, ESPECIALLY within the the Octarian Army, as deserters become more common… At least, before Tartar.

How about some angst. After seeing how skilled Agent 4 is in defeating him, DJ Octavio has Maya kidnapped and uses his hypnoshades(he makes them harder to take/shoot off) to turn her into his perfect soldier. How would the squidbeak splatoon react.
Very funny fact I actually had a plot line like this in a splatoon fic I had YEARRSS ago like in my wattpad days😭 (it’s deleted on there now tho lol). I’ve also kinda made art for this idea with that one bad end agents piece I did ages ago but I never put more thought into it aside from drawing it.
Obviously this would be pre splat3 considering Octavio wouldn’t do this splat3 - post splat 3 cus busy in the desert and then redemption arc, so tldr this won’t include neo 3 or deep cut.
Most prominently Marie would fucking FREAK out. Since you word it as it’s after he sees how skilled she is at defeating him and we can see he’s obviously capable of getting out again, this would probably not be long after the end of splat2’s storymode and Marie who is still coping with losing Callie and just now getting her back would NOT handle this well, like even just realizing Maya is missing and Octavio’s out would completely set her off. Callie would be panicking almost as much as she’s also very much still recovering and now has to deal with facing Octavio all over again because there’s no way she’d let Marie get her back alone. Add Craig Eight and Three into the mix with them coming back from octo expansion; Ashley is essentially just like “oh wow cool new agent- anddd already a new member of the brainwashed club got it.” Lucky I think would choose not to get involved and leave it to the others and Craig is essentially just “WTF happened while I was gone.”
Going into a scenario where it’s farther in the future though so everyone’s already built connections: Ashley is PISSED more than anything because of her already strained and broken relationship with Octavio and this would make it a million times worse, along with being angry that their girlfriend has to go through another thing in her life. Seeing her actually brainwashed and being that perfect soldier would be what gets that anger to turn into just fear, because it’s a similar reflection of herself under Tartar’s control.
Lucky knows Maya can handle herself, but she’s more scared for her than she’s willing to admit, considering she has no memories of her former leader and only has the stories everyone else has shared of what he’s done, and she’s never gone out of her way to interact with him. Similar to Ashley, seeing her brainwashed from the glasses just reminds her of her fight with three in the elevator, but similar to then she’s more willing than the others to fight her to try and yank those glasses off her face.
I don’t think Marie would be able to even properly fight her. I think she’d still feel guilty about shooting Callie in the face even though it needed to be done, so having to actually go outright fight her daughter would be way too much to the point that I don’t think she could even bring herself to do it. Her focus would be more on trying to snipe down Octavio in the background of the fight if he’s there, and if not, letting the others handle Maya so she can go hunt him down while his “perfect soldier” is distracted, mostly because she can’t even stand to stay there and see her like that and she’d want to still be useful. Callie I think would be in a similar situation with Marie, but staying behind anyways. She knows how disorienting it is to come down from being brainwashed and I think she’d focus on that and staying behind at the fight to be there for Maya when they get the glasses off to keep herself distracted from how horrible she feels about this even happening to her.

bad ending au
agent 3: she's there with 8 when everything happens. this will be expanded upon later.
4: never has an opportunity to escape/gets caught when she tries to. from there, her mother tightens her grip on her daughter. despite the stress, if she doesn't play, she doesn't feel whole. mom ends up singing alongside her, and hearing her voice makes 4 sick. she's nothing but a showpony now, but she's a successful one. by now, she's completely mute. yui and akiko suspect that something's up, but if they get her out at this point, it'll be a while before she's even close to being back to her old self. she never meets her friends in inkopolis, including the agents and the squid sisters
8: she fails, and she fails hard. tartar successfully sanitizes inkopolis as well as her, 3, and everyone else there. the only survivors are the squid sisters, who are in octo canyon. because of this, 3 will never reunite with her friends or her father, and even if she does, they won't remember each other. in turn, 8 will never get to meet the love of her life. this turns inkopolis into a place called 'the dead zone'.
new 3: abandoned in the desert as a child, nobody ever picked her up, so she became what splatsville residents call a desert wanderer. she never forms any connections, can only speak in choppy sentences, and sees everyone as an enemy.

Hey, where is all this support for Tartars and Syrians that the Russians are genociding? Must be something specific about who is fighting Hamas.
Let's not forget the Uyghurs and Rohingya. The Darfuri. Tigray. Nagorno-Karabakh. Let's not forget the US government poisoning the water of Standing Rock. And so many other things. These atrocities are far more common than we like to admit. I'm pretty sure there hasn't been a year of my life when a genocide wasn't going on somewhere. We've made this world a horrible place to live.
But yes it is absolutely about who Hamas is fighting, because what is unique about the genocide in Palestine is the US's relationship with Israel. We give them over 3 billion every year just for military aid. We shield them from every UN sanction. We're trying to give them more military aid right now, when every bomb we give them goes to schools and hospitals. That's just the most obvious and undeniable stuff the government does; without even talking about all the unofficial, entrenched power structures with an interest in upholding US imperialism.
The US is responsible for a lot of reprehensible things across the globe, but it is uniquely responsible for the actions of the Israeli government. None of this would be possible without America's support and sanction. It means that Americans, as a whole, are uniquely guilty for this one. The only thing we're more guilty of is the genocide of this continent's indigenous population; the historical campaigns of extermination and the ongoing repression and disenfranchisement of the survivors. And the tactics the US employed against them are exactly the ones Israel is using against the Palestinians.
America is also uniquely capable of stopping this one. Being the world's biggest imperialist means we have our hands on numerous levers of power. We have every bit of leverage over Israel that one country could possibly have over another. It's a completely one-sided relationship (because that's how imperialism works). The US government categorically refuses to being any of this leverage to bear against Israel. No one can seriously doubt that the US could end this atrocity at any moment it chose.
But we are seeing signs of the current administration starting to bend. There's an election coming up, putting the public in a unique position to put pressure on the president. If the Biden administration begins to genuinely fear that significant numbers of voters they're counting on are willing to desert them over this, that attitude will change. It's already changing; in the typical half-measures and equivocations you expect from these people.
Thanks for asking. There are, frankly, a lot of genocides and it's good to take a moment to express why this one, even more than others, is one that Americans need to mobilize against.

Michael Polakowski's "Anywhere & Here."
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Opening on Saturday, January 7th, 2023 at Thinkspace Projects in Los Angeles, California is artist Michael Polakowski's solo exhibition, "Anywhere and Here."
"Anywhere & Here" presents a series of paintings that depict a shifting cast of protagonists from Detroit based artist Michael Polakowski. Each character is shown grappling with the reality of the here and now, while dreaming of the potential of anywhere. Familiar motifs, such as watermelons and pool halls ground this body of work in the American Midwest, where I was raised and currently work. These images are contrasted with depictions of dunes, Palm trees, and winding roads that infringe upon this familiar space and entice the protagonists with the potential of what lies beyond.
The shows references the narrative structures of absurdist novels, like Franz Kafka’s “The Castle” and Dino Buzzati’s “The Tartar Steppe.” Both novels feature protagonists trapped in their position in life, yearning to either escape a place or achieve acceptance within it. Using both these texts as a jumping off point, the paintings within this show expand upon my life in the Midwest elaborating on how it can be both comforting and insulating. Within the narrative of the show, a shifting set of often unseen protagonists are shown grappling with the idea of a far off and unreachable castle. These lyrically idealized structures are seen as vague objects on a horizon line, acting more as a fixed point of navigation and less as a goal that can be realistically achieved. “Anywhere and Here” is a reference to our own sense of presence. It acts as a response to the question asked by each painting in this series “where can we find clarity in our day to day lives?”
Michael Polakowski began his studio practice in 2016 in Detroit, MI. In the first few years of his career, and throughout his upbringing in the Midwestern United States, he often felt like he was missing out on a sense of clarity that only existed somewhere else. His work came to focus on how mental health frames and contextualizes our view of the world, often using windows or other visual portals to represent the boundary between our present lives, and the seemingly far-off idealized world. Polakowski thinks of each painting as an opportunity to expand upon an ongoing narrative within his work, a narrative where the protagonist is grappling with finding a sense of self, maintaining presence in their environment, and connecting to the world around them. However, these abstract ideas are usually depicted in scenes like stolen cars abandoned in a river-bed, or harrowing tales of a lone explorer lost in a metaphysical desert. With his work, Polakowski is always trying to strike a balance between “heaviness” and “lightness.” That’s why, at first glance, his work is vividly colored and populated with inviting imagery. It’s only through further investigating the connection between the images that the deeper narrative surfaces.

Skirmish - Captain 3
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Through most early years of her life she didn't do much other than play a lot of video games. She had no friends, her parents were complete deadbeats and even abusive at times, and she didn't know of anything else to do.
One day, at about age 14, she got kicked out by her father, told to "get a life." Having a positive outlook she started by trying out battling in turf wars like in the video games she used to play and had a lot of fun with it. After a while, she noticed Captain Cuttlefish and got roped into being an agent, newly titled "Agent 3." Once again she had a lot of fun, she met the Squid Sisters personally through them being agents as well and related to Craig, and the two even offered to style her hair for her whenever she wanted, almost like, well, sisters to her. It all felt to her more like a video game than reality.
Over the course of a few years she got more and more invested until it ended up a grind. It wasn't fun anymore, but she thought it was what she was supposed to do. One particular day they ran into and fought the deserter octoling Cuttlefish later dubbed "Agent 8", leading to the events which caused Agent 3 to get mind controlled by Tartar to fight 8. That was all it took to force a full reality check, what little of that positivity she held was gone. Her newfound friend, Agent 8, was the only one to notice, and she attempted to comfort her, cementing a strong bond over time between the two.
Five years later, Cuttlefish has retired and Agent 3 became the new Captain. Agents 1 and 2 had come to nickname her "Skirmish," later meeting a promising new "Agent 3" they liked to call "Neo."
Her biggest comfort, 8, had moved on mostly from being an agent, and hadn't responded to anything for a few months. She had always encouraged Skirmish to take some time off, and she had always refused. As captain, she now regretted not heeding her advice, being fairly certain she had lost her.
The squid formerly known as Agent 3 was left to wonder... what now?

VER. THE RED SORCERER WILL WAKE THE SLEEPER & SILENCE THE BELLS
♔. synopsis : canon adjacent, mixing in elements of deathless and taking this verse as koschei's alt. tsar of life origin story. rewriting some details & emphasizing the undercurrent of the plot to reveal koschei faked his death in book 2 and was the mastermind behind the events of the series. he usurps medved, and becomes the new summer-demon towards the end of book 3. most plots can take place after the series, when he's on the brink of waging a war to take over medieval rus' and the other chyerti realms, particularly morozko's.
in the 11th cent. during the reign of vladimir the great, yuri, a polovtsian khan who plundered and traversed the entirety of the great steppes with his nomadic warriors, sacked a village near serbia and took a country girl as his wife. the girl's name was danika, and she belonged to a balkan line of witches & sorcerers who worshipped the giver, dazbog (the chyert of summer and tsar of life).
some time later, after confirming she had the ability to see the unseen chyerti, dazbog gave her his jewel, the alatyr stone. he promised to protect her so long as she wore it and did not let him fade from memory. when the time came, she was to pass it down to the youngest of her three sons. she only had two at the time.
that year, yuri led an unsuccessful attack against prince mstislav, son of vladamir. yuri was killed in combat, but danika and her sons were spared, though taken as slaves, under the condition that they assimilate and convert to christianity. danika converted, for the sake of her children and the unborn one she carried, but hid dazbog's jewel, wove him into her prayers and never forgot about the chyerti.
♔. the polovtsy / polovytsians. turkic nomadic warriors (aka the cumans). the name comes from the old slavic word for "blonde" "pale yellow" due to the color of their hair and/or their cream colored akhal-teke horses, known for their speed and golden metallic sheen. by the events of the book (14th cent.) the polovtsy fled from the mongol invasion of rus' to different countries, but many also joined the golden horde and became generally referred to as tartars, along w other turkic groups. (koschei's fairytale is based on a famous polovtsian, khan konchek) ♔. dazbog / medved. a slavic solar deity who resided in buyan but also the underworld. in the summer, he was a man in his prime, accompanied by wolves. in winter, he was a one-eyed old man who wore a bear skin during his hibernation in death's realm. canon doesn't say this explicitly, but medved is lame daba, aka dazbog after his demonization, which christianization (and koschei) caused. very few know him by his old name & nature. ♔. alatyr stone. in this verse, it's a red-gold jewel connected to dazbog's power and a gateway to buyan. it's his equivalent to the sapphire morozko passed to vasya. in book 2, it's the stone koschei uses as a decoy death.
i. three roads, three sons: koschei was born and raised in tmutarakan as a slave, serving first as a groom, then a farmhand, and when he came of age, he and his brothers were dragged into a war between princes for vladamir's throne. koschei's mother gave him dazbog's jewel hoping it would protect him, and it did, but during the winter march, his brothers were taken by the frost. in the spring when the war was in full bloom, koschei's contact with dazbog became more direct and frequent. he often carried him away from the brink of death in the battlefield in the spirit of a wolf to buyan, where he'd heal him, feed him, and teach him the art of war and magic.
eventually, dazbog aided koschei in deserting the war. during this time, he traveled the principalities around kiev freely, but the past, the threat of death and imprisonment, and the growing disdain for witches and sorcerers chased him out of every place he hoped to settle. he went to baba yaga's midnight country where he formed a romance with tamara and earned the favor of the golden mare and firebird, zornitsa, the fastest horse of yaga's flock. with her, koschei was able to outrun any threat or foe, and was carried to farther lands, away from kiev and the church bells.
♔. the golden mare / firebird : diverting from the book, koschei's mare is named zornitsa, the morning star, and she's the same in every verse. koschei wins her favor on his own, as he was a worthy rider at the start. later, he loses favor and that's when tamara & the golden bridle ( without spikes !! ) come into play.
ii. the wolf, the firebird, & the horse with a golden mane: he ended up in the newly founded village of moscow when it was still pagan, and was set on making his home there. ivan yurovich was the name he used to avoid recognition (given his growing reputation in kiev), and upon his arrival the lord offered him riches, land, and a seat at his table if he sold him his golden mare. koschei accepted, but used sorcery to transmute a wolf into the likeness of zornitsa, then asked her to hide in the wood in her firebird form.
the lord's sister, yelena tomislavna, had the gift of sight too. she caught on to the ruse, but kept koschei's secret. in time the two fell deeply for one another, but koschei was not a preferred match. he contrived a plan to have the lord spot the firebird during a hunt, and as he suspected, the lord promised yelena's hand to anyone who'd manage to catch it for him. koschei rose to the occassion, again presenting a wolf who simply forgot it was not a firebird, and the wedding was set.
♔. ivan yurovich : his birthname in this verse (see this post to dive into the rabbit hole). after his brothers' deaths, their nickname for him (due to his lankiness) continued to be his preferred name. he goes by koschei yurovich through his pre-immortal travels, then later koschei bessmertny. kasyan lutovich is the current alias. after his identity reveal he goes back to being referred to as koschei bessmertny. it's a name he's proud of, so if you ever call him ivan, it's on sight !!
iii. the midwinter feast : during their engagement celebration, morozko was an honorary guest, as it was his midwinter holiday too. he took great interest in yelena and had her tend to him the entire night, much to koschei's agitation and moscow's speculation. when the frost demon left, a panicked idea took root among the folk that yelena could not marry. she would need to be morozko's tribute for maslenitsa, the sunfeast, or else they'd face a late summer and risk another deadly famine. to escape the hysteria, koschei and yelena fled to a secret place tucked between realms in the midday road which koschei called yaichka for it's golden wheat fields that looked like a sea of yolk.
it was in that field, while koschei was stealing food from buyan, that the noon wraith, sent by dazbog, lured a lounging yelena into a trance and danced her into midnight and then back into moscow. when koschei found out, he and zornitsa raced through the midday road from buyan to moscow, but a devotee of dazbog could only find the middays of spring and summer. what felt like hours of riding were actually weeks. he arrived on winter's last sunset, through the red flash of the last day of the sunfeast, but the people of moscow had already strangled yelena in the snow and tossed her body into the sacrificial fire.
koschei begged morozko and dazbog to undo what the people had done, using the water of life and the water of death, but the twins refused to intervene with fate. herein laid the trappings of a secret war, where koschei set his heart towards revenge against the people of rus' and the twins who'd wronged him. for the moment, they were none the wiser. dazbog took koschei into buyan and continued to mentor him until he eventually used the knowledge to formulate a spell that would have him take dazbog's power and remove himself from death's reach so that he could confidently enact his revenge on the frost demon and people of rus'.
♔. the chains of the winter king : this feast was the memory vasya found morozko imprisoned in, and the man she saw was koschei ("ivan"). as tamara's sister later explains, kasyan's face is not koschei's real face which is why she did not immediately recognize him. so this is the first glimpse we get of him in the series. i'm establishing that koschei, working through medved, was responsible for the creation of this prison memory, but it was just that. a magical simulation on loop. no historical events could be changed by meddling.
iv. the golden bridle: zornitsa urged koschei against his plan, but he needed her speed to catch dazbog's chariot in his journey towards death's country, when he was most vulernable. he created a golden bridle that would bind zornitsa's will to his own. then he seduced tamara once more, and tricked her into placing the bridle on zornitsa. with the bridle on, koschei seized his opportunity and struck his fatal spell on dazbog just before he could reach morozko's country. but the spell was complex and too slippery for a human mind. they both tumbled into rus', and when koschei finally came to, he found himself immortal and alone, but not entirely successful.
v. lame daba : killing a dual natured god in one blow was impossible. in the fall, dazbog split in two: his primary form (the summer wolf) was killed and absorbed by koschei; but the winter bearskin of his hibernating form still remained, and koschei's spell had inadvertently reanimated the husk in the effort to make himself deathless. koschei's life force was removed from his body, but was stored in medved, the eater, whose mind and memory became a mangled and rotted version of dazbog's, tainted by koschei's essence and vision of him. medved then represented a mockery of life fueled by it's hardships and became the tsar of the upyr, the insatiable undead.
medved had no true recollection of his previous life and neither did anyone else. koschei then realized that to kill and usurp a god meant to erase them from memory, and when medved began to wreak havoc on rus', morozko imprisoned his brother with a murky recollection of the time before they were at odds. likewise, the world had an obscured recollection of koschei and who he was before -- but the witch women of midnight and the crossroad demons who had witnessed what he'd done remembered. they did not have the means to intervene, but yaga did cast out her daughter tamara, and shut all the roads of the chyerti realms to her and koschei so they could never come back.
vi. the tower of bones. now unable to reach buyan and the sleeping bear to retrieve his death and finish what he started, koschei set up camp in a place he called, bashnya kostei, the tower of bones. he offered tamara a place at his side, but she refused and left him. thus began the campaigns against the people of kievan rus' that inspired the tales of koschei the deathless. eventually, he took to keeping a lower profile, used sorcery and glamors to hide his rotting appearance, recruited the surrounding chyerti to do his bidding, and conjured scrying spells to keep morozko blind to his machinations and whereabouts.
vii. the bear & the nightingale. in dreams, koschei could sense any perturbances with medved given their inconvenient entanglement. after years of nothing, he saw a young girl with familiar green eyes and the gift of sight approach the bear at his clearing. if koschei could not get to buyan, he figured the sacrifice of a witch could summon medved into rus'. so he riled the bear awake in secret and planted the idea in his subconscious. the bear was successful, through the death of a different witch, but when he was foiled and bound again by the sacrifice of a father. koschei moved on to the back up plan: a counterspell to yaga's banishment using the alatyr stone, the red flash of the last winter sunset on maslenitsa, and the power charge of a witch from her bloodline.
book 2 & book 3. from here, we set up the events of book 2. koschei's core motive is a power grab, particularly for buyan and the chyerti. not knowing where vasya ran off to, he took on the alias of kasyan lutovich to infiltrate moscow and investigate vasya's remaining family there, hoping to find another witch/sorcerer with the sight who could charge and destroy the stone, thus "killing him" but really his body disintegrated and reappeared in the water of life in buyan, where he began to gather his own chyerti forces and used medved as a puppet & distraction in book 3 to buy himself time.
taking over moscow & destroying the bells was supposed to be an added treat that went a little haywire (understatement), but was not the primary goal. this was getting medved bound again at the right time while koschei was in buyan, getting his death back, hiding it somewhere else unknown, and merging with what remained of dazbog's power so he could become the new tsar of life. when vasya returns to the clearing seeking medved's aid, she finds his bearskin limp and koschei standing in his place. further notes & divergences can be discussed and/or will be posted as hcs.

- oh yeah and semi-sanitized hosts really are partially dead!! their heartbeat is very slow, has an irregular beat, and can be pretty hard to find if trying to check their pulse. their scarring is FREEZING cold. - "ohhh but inklings shouldnt be warm blooded because blah blah therefore theyre always cold" shut up shut up if that were the case then there wouldnt be any inklings in the desert who moved from inkopolis shut up shut uppppp!!! /nonsrs - depending on the severity of the infection, hosts will sometimes sleepwalk at night. they pretty much act like a zombie minus the violence. just kinda hobbling around growling and might raid the pantry. this isnt their mind, this is the sanitization kinda hijacking them while theyre unconscious. in fact, they can dream completely normally and be entirely unaware of the body getting up and grooving. if theyre woken up theyll be a bit disoriented but back in their own body - telephones that look like tartar mixed with the weird radio sounds/voice that tartar has can overwhelm sanitization victims, often causing either severe panic attacks or severe disassociation. the disassociation one can let their sanitization take over a bit and start following orders to attack. so uh yeah not good :3 id imagine the radio waves that would cause tartars voice would be pretty hard to replicate so thats luckily not much of an issue, but seeing old telephones like tartar would absolutely still trigger a panic attack. they WILL go ham on that phone and tear it to pieces before realizing what theyre even doing. kill kill kill - in my hc's specifically, sanitization and fooze works like a stronger oil vs water situation. they roll off of each other the same way they'd roll of a table, and it would be REALLY hard to try and mix them. so if a sanitized host were hit by fooze in the infected scarring areas, it wouldnt do anything. just like getting splashed with water (except water kills cephalings so bad analogy but you get it you get it) ive probably got more info on the logistics of sanitization and how it effects people, but thats all i got so far. as you can see, i fucking LOVE science fiction thats the flavor of splatoon. no more white glossy spaceships with starship fights and lazer guns and ooky spooky aliens, i want sci-fi thats more like fantasy that has scientific explanations!!!!! like splatoon!!!!!!!!
sorry this got so long lol, worldbuilding is my prime special interest of all time and when my brain grabs ahold of a concept that can be build off of it fucking GOES. anywas uhhh stan rome splatoon goodnight tri-state area <- doesnt go to sleep (part 2, i deadass wrote so much that tumblr wouldnt let me send the whole thing in one ask ;0;)
*nod* i like these. sci fi is fun especially biology stuff

I need for everyone to know that I made four pavlovas - each requiring 4-6 egg-whites and tbh i put most of the yolks down the drain - and I did EVERYTHING right, I got fresh eggs, I timed myself on the blender, I used cream of tartar instead of vinegar to stabilize it, I made my own icing sugar, I stared longingly at the oven for hours at a time - before finding out that you can't make pavlovas when it's humid.
This is a traditional Christmas desert. In the sub-tropics. On the coast. In a drafty old timber house.
The main thing I have to say is that New Zealand definitely invented the pavlova.
