I started The Imperfects only for the action and sci-fi, honestly expecting half decent story and special effects. But boy was I wrong and am I happy about it. Because Instead I got

Well-written, casual asexual representation (one of the main characters is an ace girl whose power is to seduce people and that's just amazing)

Kind of a werewolf but better, cause it's a Mexican guy who turns into a fucking chupacabras

Impressively good special effects, considering most show have low budget and consequentially bad effects on their first season

Amazing soundtrack! They even played Of Monsters And Men which is my favorite band

Well-written young adult characters! Can you believe that?

Two of the main characters were artists for a living (a singer and a comic book artist) and they weren't starving, they were actually doing pretty great!

A good balance of drama, comedy and action. Also a little bit of romance without making the entire show about it!

TLDR: go watch The Imperfects on Netflix, it's great!

alex sarkov is so interesting to me as an antagonist, because in most media when some people have been massively wronged by a mad scientist/man in a position of power or whatever, the man in question is often a pretty solemn, cold, serious-looking and -acting guy. but in the imperfects when burke or abbi or tilda or LITERALLY ANYONE is talking about how much this one guy has fucked up their lives they're talking about about THE most unserious red-headed australian twink i think ive ever seen in my life. he acts like he's in a comedy while literally everyone else is acting like they're in a drama i don't know what to do with it

I’m obsessed with the Imperfects

Now four episodes into the Imperfects and honestly what a show. I was expecting horror and I got comedy. Juan is terrified he’ll turn into the Chupacabras and terrorize his girlfriend and lose her forever. Instead she’s obsessed with it because she saw some adult version of Beauty and The Beast growing up and now has a monster kink. She named it Chupi and she’s drawing softcore fanart of them snuggling. Later when he transforms to bite a dudes nose off to protect his niece she jumps up and down cheering at how cool her uncle is. Peak comedy, absolutely unparalleled.

Science mom Sydney is unfazed by metallic rage monster invasions and a dude blowing himself up on her back porch. Grab a mop and some buckets, where’s my wine, I need a nap, parenting is exhausting. She’s amazing. Her house is slowly being destroyed by her newly adopted super children who answer the door like the scooby-gang when cops come around and steal her expensive wine collection. She has accepted that she’s just a mom now. She teaches by doing: here help me make chlorine poison that may or may not kill the angry dude on the other side of my military grade barricade. Phew, it didn’t kill him, I mean yeah I knew it was safe, absolutely. Oh the kids went on a field trip and got kidnapped by baby mad scientists and then murdered their way to freedom? Sounds like a wild Tuesday. Her children come and go like outdoor cats that sometimes come back drenched in blood. Just don’t get any on the carpet. 

Abbi is so excited to help her new science mom in the kitchen. She’s so nervous that she’ll miss out while she’s on her field trip. Please leave some science for me. Mom says yes of course sweetie have fun and murder is okay if they chained you up in a warehouse first. I love how unbothered they are with killing those scientists. Abbi is like “whoops” and Juan is like “it’s not murder if the Chupi does the killing.” I adore them.

And then there’s Tilda, she’s a hands on girl. Oh the guy we killed came back to life on the dissection table? While everyone else screams she grabs a buzzsaw and chops his head off, easy peasy. She has no problem using her superpowers for murder. If you fuck around, you’re gonna find out. She’s a sarcastic queen who doesn’t care except when you don’t come home then she sits on the couch watching the door for hours fighting back tears and traps you in a bearhug when you finally get home.

I've just watched the imperfects (i'm almost done but that's besides the point) I just need to point this out because i don't see anyone else who did!!

Juan and his brother!!! Flip flopping through languages!!! ACTUALLY GOOD BILLINGUAL REP???

As an ace person i'm super happy about the Abbi ace rep obviously but as a billingual person I'm also very pleased!!

I flip flop all the time between french (my maternal language) and english because somethings are easier to say in the other language or sometimes saying things in french give them more meaning/weight to me! I love you is a good example! I love you in english is lesser than je t'aime (french ILY) for me specifically! And yes obviously at times Alejandro and Juan speak in spanish because Paloma most likely doesn't fully grasp the language but still when she's not there they flip flop (that's 3 times bow i've said that), or one speaks in spanish and the other in english. It's just so GOOD.

honestly the worst part about no imperfects season 2 for me is never getting to see how alejandro reacts to chupacabras juan. its about the SECRETS. its about the MISCOMMUNICATION. its about FAMILY. and its tearing me apart.

#i think my favorite scenes if not my top favorite scene of the whole show was when agent sponson turned his gun on paloma and juan realized #-it was his desire to protect that triggered his transformation. ABSOLUTELY insane i will never be over that. #and then how paloma was so excited and chanting ''tío! tío! tío!'' after that was SO CUTE #and how she DREW HIM BITING SPONSON'S NOSE OFF #i just . sigh. mourning what ill never have #i honestly half-expected the shot panning through the trashed house to end with the chupacabras asleep and cuddling paloma #magpie thoughts #the imperfects #the imperfects netflix #contemplating writing a fic to fill the void.
