Subtext only seems gayer than actual text because it’s blatant. It’s put there purposefully. But what you have to figure out is what it’s put there purposefully for.

There’s a huge motherfucking difference between subtext used for queerbaiting and manipulation over an actual legitimate subtext. Xena does not fall into the category of subtext for wrong or selfish reasons.

It was severely censored. They COULD NOT do it.

But if you watch the show - you’ll quickly realize that it doesn’t even fucking matter that they’re not canon.

The creators agree with you anyway that they are.

The reason why it’s still the gayest TV show ever is because the relationship between Xena and Gabrielle is the most realistic depiction of love and therefore the best lesbian or WLW representation that there is. Part of the reason why is because they are the main protagonists. They’re the MAIN characters of the show. That may exist but it’s extremely fucking rare. The other part is that the creators see them that way. You get a legitimate lesbian love story because IT IS.

So it doesn’t matter that they’re not textually canon. In fact you could ever say it’s better that they’re not.

Because in a weird, ironic and hilarious way - the fact the show is censored helps a hell of a lot because the creators used the censorship to their advantage. They were clever and creative in getting around the censorship. They built on the relationship through it. And so it’s because it’s censored why it feels so real.

You don’t get canon text like “I’m in love with you”, “marry me” or “I want to have sex with you.”

You get: “It was like I was in a dream too. I forgot everything. But even though I didn't remember you..., I felt your presence. And knew that I would never be complete unless those shadows were brought into the light.” and “Gabrielle, if I'd only have thirty seconds to live, that's how I'd want to live them, looking into your eyes.”

Which is 1000x gayer than anything you’ll get today textually, subtextually or basically any romantic dialogue in a TV show said to another character ever.

Xena is just THAT GAY. It’s extremely gay. It’s a fucking queer show about queer characters. And it is that way because the creators made it that way. They purposefully made it that way. For the right reasons!

So don’t compare it to shit like ‘Supergirl’. The creators/cast/crew ridiculed you. They didn’t represent you. They baited you in and laughed at you. Xena do the opposite. They validate and love you.

Alright, let’s talk about those Jonathan Larson claims that keep coming up

Disclaimer: Jonathan Larson was not a saint. All accounts showed he was a bit of a narcissist and testimony from friends shows he could be insufferable, and the problems with Rent itself that have come up over the years have to be taken seriously considering its status as a pop culture phenomenon. However, Jonathan Larson is also dead and therefore cannot defend himself from some of this stuff, and I don’t think an untrue accusation should just hang over a dead man’s head without rebuttal.

“Jonathan Larson Stole the Plot of Rent from Sarah Schulman”

For those not in the know: Sarah Schulman is a lesbian writer and activist who in 1990 published a book called People in Trouble. A cursory glance at the plot of People in Trouble shows it has plot elements that are also in Rent: namely, the backdrop of the HIV/AIDS crisis in the East Village in the late 80s/early 90s, with a lesbian character leaving her male partner for a woman.

Sarah Schulman makes the argument in her book Stagestruck that, while the main pot of Rent is taken fro La Boheme, the Joanne-Maureen-Mark storyline in Rent is directly lifted from People in Trouble. Her evidence for this is how similarly that plays out, the similar setting, and an apparent “smoking gun” of the AZT alarms, which she claims weren’t common in 1996 when Rent premiered but were common in 1990 when she wrote People in Trouble. This story is more or less repeated word-for-word by others whenever someone wants to come out of the woodwork to criticize Jonathan Larson when something big of his is produced: e.g. Rent Live and now Tick, Tick... Boom!. There is, actually some proof that Jonathan Larson read People in Trouble: he has a copy of it in the Jonathan Larson papers at the Library of Congress, and Michael Korie apparently had a conversation during Rent’s development where he freely stated that People in Trouble influenced some of his ideas in Rent.

Couple of problems with this narrative: one big problem is that people assume Rent was written and performed in a much shorter time than it actually was. It wasn’t. Larson started working on it in 1989, when it was a collab with Billy Aronson. It began the formal workshopping process at NYTW in 1992 and was more or less in constant development from there. So Rent is very much informed by Jonathan Larson’s time in that area of New York in the late 80s/early 90s. In fact, according to Linda S. Chapman, he didn’t read People in Trouble until much later: the fall of 1995, only a few months before he died and after the bulk of Rent was written.

But what about the whole love triangle bit? Well, that also wasn’t something he read in a book: it’s something that happened to him in real life. Jonathan Larson had a girlfriend named Brenda Daniels who was a dancer and repeatedly cheated on him before eventually leaving him for a woman. J. Collis says in the Larson oral history Boho Days that Brenda Daniels was the basis for Maureen.

tl;dr: Rent undeniably has some influence from People in Trouble, but a lot of the “evidence” people used for him actually plagiarizing it is based in a lack of knowledge of Rent’s history and development. Granted, the average person isn’t going to know all of that.

“Jonathan Larson didn’t credit Lynn Thomson for her contributions to the script”

Lynn Thomson was a dramaturg hired by NYTW to consult on Rent’s script: she was not someone whom Larson personally hired, she was brought in by NYTW specifically to help bring Rent to a state wherein it could be performed. After Rent opened on Broadway, she filed a lawsuit to claim co-credit for writing Rent. The thing about that is it gets us into an already complicated question on what the role of a dramaturg is, especially when it comes to new work development.

Based on the Larson papers, she did not write Rent so much as give Larson extensive notes that influenced how he wrote the subsequent drafts, which is what a dramaturg is expected to do. But dramaturgs are often underpaid and undercredited. They always have been, and that’s something that should change, especially when they are an integral part of a show that becomes a phenomenon like Rent has. Anthony Rapp is actually quoted in an article from when the lawsuit was filed saying that he and the rest of the cast weren’t sure they could call her contributions “co-writing” Rent, BUT she was absolutely a major part of why Rent got to the point it did and deserved more credit and compensation for it. In fact, he claimed that if Jonathan Larson were still alive, he would have agreed Thomson deserved more credit for how she shaped the show.

tl;dr: Lynn Thomson was undeniably mistreated by the Rent production and has a strong case for deserving more credit for her contributions to Rent, but 1) her issues are purely with the production, not Jonathan Larson himself, and 2) engaging in this gets you into the whole “What’s the role of a dramaturg” issue that most non-theater people aren’t interested in.

The big thing I want you to take away from this: Jonathan Larson did not plan his death to magically coincide with the opening of Rent therefore absolving himself of all the problems that have turned up in the years since it came out. His death was unexpected. It’s frustrating how much stuff he left unaddressed, but that’s what happens when people die. Not everything can get resolved in a neat way.

What is your interpretation of pinhead and Nikoleta's relationship?

I think my trouble with really putting my finger on this is that there are several different versions of the female cenobite's character out there, several different versions of their relationship, and their relationship is virtually non-existent in film canon. I'm not even sure which version the name Nikoleta comes from at this point, or who she is supposed to be as a character. Even checking the wiki is unhelpful, because like usual people are trying to force several different versions of Hellraiser to fit into one conclusive canon narrative, which is both impossible to do and annoying to witness.

If we're speaking of the Boom!Comics version, I was rather indifferent towards that relationship, at least as far as I got into the story. The Boom!Comics seemed to suggest to me a romantic tenderness turned into spurned anger/complex and ambiguous feelings, at least on her part, towards Pinhead. I find that kind of boring tbh. More may have been elaborated upon past the point that I stopped reading.

If we're speaking of Barbie Wilde's version, while I have not yet read her short story, to my memory I believe she was called Sister Celice, and as a human being she was a lesbian and a nun. And if we are speaking of the Bradley!Pinhead, who is male (if gender-non-conforming), then it's obviously not romantic for Wilde's version. I don't think this version covered her life as a cenobite at all.

If anybody knows what info I'm missing in regards to the different versions of her character, including anything that was created for the 90's comics, please help me clear this up.

In the films, all I can see is that she is his subordinate, she respects him, and she is more eager to torture. This was particularly so for Kirsty, which I interpereted to suggest that she may have preferred women in her human life and this translated into preferring female torture victims. I don't think the films give us much, and therefore it requires pure headcanon to create a relationship for their characters. There's not much there for analysis.

If we are speaking of my fanfics, I utilize that film canon and expand upon that as a platonic relationship with a deep connection, and it's a topic I haven't explored that fully yet.

Even so, I don't feel like the cenobite experience can be framed by human experiences. Cenobites may have lovers or companions within their own community, but I don't know that I would say those things hold the same context as human relationships in my mind.

Also, I'm just not that particularly intruigued by her as a character personally, and therefore I haven't given her all that much thought. I'm actually more intrigued by Angelique and Dreamer when it comes to female cenobites. But again, my primary source of interest is the films.

Just read the first 4 boom comics and I have to say with the exception of Xander and maybe Giles it feels like we're following very fundamentally different characters? With some (Willow, Cordy, Drusilla) it felt like all they shared was a name and physical likeness. Once I got past that I enjoyed it, but it certainly wasn't what I was expecting.

I love how they were adapted to generation Z – characters, context, and readers. I think the changes were smart enough to show how much the team knows about them in the first place to be able to play with new influences, and still keep the essence to explore them in a new context. These characters’ cores may not be as obvious, but there’s a difference between the stereotypes they played in high school and their actual personalities, as showcased in their later developments. There’s no reason to retell these stories or keep them as anachronistic/outdated clichés, so this makes this new universe actually interesting, unexpected in a good way. I also like to think these characters were given a second chance to be their best, even if from a 2019 perspective.

Original Cordelia was a rude and offensive bully in order to maintain her superior status, and hid her good grades to not be seen as a “nerd”. Would her tactics be as effective today, or even interesting in this context? This is an era that being a nerd is fashionable, that appearances and likes are the status indicator. She’s Miss Sunnydale, worries about the environment, surprises girls with praises, and says she doesn’t care about what people think of her. Think how social media affects her plans of how she wants to be seen – self-involved or a perfect girl? She’s the queen bee who knows it’s smarter to reach her goals by being envied than feared. And she’s still acid and judgmental, just with an aggressive-passive approach, which is much more devastating because you can’t even hate the girl. Original Cordelia wasn’t as violent as the mean girl trope tried to portray her, current Cordelia survives and triumphs with a dashing smile.

Willow is already out as a lesbian in high school, twenty years after the original even said: “It’s the computer age, nerds are in.” I’ll always adore her well-constructed development in the original series, but, from a writing perspective, how interesting it’d be if the astonishing transformation were the same? And how fair it’d be to read about a girl in the closet trying to be with boys as if her sexuality was written again as an afterthought? It’s amazing to be able to see Willow in a place more accepting to all her qualities. She can do even small things like run for class presidency, have a goth girlfriend, and choose her own clothes. This difference also shows how sad it is that Willow always had the potential to be this witty, expressive, and independent, but was forever affected by the bullying and homophobia from her early years. Willow was never defined by her shyness or meekness, these are things others made to her, her core was always her effort, her ambition, her spirit, her ever-growing power.

We still have to learn more about Drusilla’s past to understand her changes, but it seems like such difference could’ve only achieved with Angel not torturing her into insanity, which in turn may not happened because she was never a seer. As much as I adore her original mystery and lunacy, it’d be unfair to reduce Drusilla as only defined by them. It’s a challenge to explore and surface other qualities, especially someone who hadn’t much space to develop in the original series, so the question is: what does Drusilla have to offer as a character outside this role of perpetually Angel’s victim the series had her? Again, she was lovely as she was, but the tragedy of what was done to her overshadowed who she was capable of becoming. In this new context, she keeps being seductive, sharp, impatient, confident, cunning, observant, studious… These traits are just displayed in other ways – she reads books instead of tarot cards, orders instead of pleads –, replacing the magical ambiguity with threatening directives. She’s now a bossy Big Bad, after all.

Of course, no one is forced to like these changes or any change at all, but at least it’s been pretty fun to explore and play with these characters again without the surface of 90s tropes. I mean, the Buffyverse was born from a necessity of overcoming these tropes, and did it amazingly, but now this approach has become the new paradigm to be broken again. We don’t expect anymore the blond girl to be the first to die, the nerd to be powerless, and the queen bee to be shallow, so why repeat them? As many have said, it is an alternative universe fiction, just officially published, but a story any less valid or interesting because of this. It just has new expectations to break.

So much happened in the five years the trolls spent waiting for this page. A troll pretending to be Surfshack Tito from the show Rocket Power became Chris’s last great troll. Jackie Romy, who I discussed in the album Chris did for her, was the last classic sweetheart. Chris took a short break from the internet in the spring of 2010 at the urging of his pastoral counselor Rocky Shoemaker. The next year Chris began a poorly thought out campaign to dox the trolls and get them to apologize, but this was cut short on 6 September 2011, when Chris’s father, the beloved internet lumberjack Robert Franklin Chandler Jr., passed away of heart failure at the age of 84. Less than two months later, Chris and Barbara were jailed for attacking The Game Place owner Michael Snyder. Both were put on probation and forced to pay court fees, Chris also having to attend psychiatric evaluations. Two and a half years later, The Game Place would close up shop, Michael Snyder presumably either retiring or heading off for greener pastures far from Chris.

2012 and 2013 were the most barren years of Christory since the poorly and inconsistently recorded ‘90’s. Most of his communication occurred through Facebook and he uploaded few videos or art pieces, none of it new Sonichu comics. By this point, most of the trolls who hadn’t already left abandoned him, the Man in the Pickle Suit staying as one of the few bearers of the torch. The one thing of note is that during this period, following a year or so of crossdressing, Chris decided to begin identifying as female, using phrases like “Tomgirl” (which remains the most popular term for female Chris, though Chris has not used this term in years) or “Male Lesbian” before deciding to go full on transwoman, legally changing his name to Christine in 2016.

On 10 January 2014, a fire started in 14 Branchland Court believed to be sparked by an ill-maintained coffee maker. Chris and Barb escaped with some valuable possessions and their dogs and Lucy the cat (one of their other cats was not so lucky). Though the house was salvageable and many of Chris’s possessions survived, they did have to live in a rental house for most of 2014 (some places erroneously state that 14 Branchland Court was completely destroyed; this is untrue, and the Chandlers moved back into their renovated home by the end of the year.) During the stay in the rental house in nearby Barboursville, Chris met a new sweetheart, Catherine, and developed a dislike of Sonic’s redesign for the Sonic Boom games, latching on to the newly blue arms to the degree he attacked a man with pepper spray over it, which meant 2015 was another year in and out of court.

And then, on 4 September 2015 (what would have been Bob’s 88th birthday), it finally happened. Chris uploaded another 11 “glorious” pages of Sonichu 11. I believe Chris has never gone out and stated why it took him so long to restart the comic, or why he stopped in the first place, beyond losing inspiration. It’s tempting to say even he got bored of this vapid Christmas story, but it’s also incredibly likely that he only started a Christmas story because he was inspired to do so by Christmas cheer and once the season ended, he had no desire to restart the story, not even next Christmas. It’s also likely, as Sonichu 10 was technically written after this, that he was put off by the negative reaction to the ending and didn’t want to continue the comic. Indeed, the only thing that convinced Chris to restart the comic was the promise of money from Patreon.

This first page almost seems like a refresher for the people who were patiently waiting for five years. If you’re reading the whole, finished thing in one sitting, it feels rather redundant, though it does move the story forward. Robbie plays the Wii and watches a Christmas short (I don’t recognize what he’s watching; I’m guessing it was something Chris watched a lot as a kid but it wasn’t a success and didn’t become a part of the Christmas special canon like Rudolph or Charlie Brown or the Grinch.) Christine practices her lines in front of an impromptu audience of stuffed animals. Rosechu cleans house and Cerah goes over to her best friend/childhood crush Kevin, who is visibly Jewish based on the menorah and what appears to be a dreidel in the bottom right window. Kevin is never given a surname, so he is almost universally called “Kevin the Jew”.

Just a Puppy Crush - Chapter Twelve Ship(s): Violet/Clementine, background Aasim/Louis and Ruby/Brody Media: The Walking Dead Game (Season 4)

Violet sat herself down between Brody and Louis, who was in the middle of a heated debate with Ruby over the validity of wearing acid-washed jeans in the modern day. Brody was obliviously scribbling in her notebook, completely tuned out to the nonsense going on to the left of her.

“Oh, I’m so sorry, Lizzie McGuire,” Louis snapped with much more ferocity than was expected for the situation. Ruby groaned and threw a chopstick at him, which he narrowly dodged. “Keep your head up, Rubes. Your snapback is falling. Here, let me check your mood ring.”

Louis went to grab Ruby’s arm and she slapped his hand away, angrily opening a bag of chips with more force than she intended to, as chip crumbs flew across the table. “Shit.”

“Vi, settle this. Today’s hot topic is ‘90s fashion fads, and how they should stay in the fucking cave of irrelevancy that they crawled into. Hannah Montana here wants to undo years of evolution and slap on some overalls and a windbreaker. It’s revolting, right?”

Violet pursed her lips, jabbing a straw into her chocolate milk container and taking a contemplative sip.

“Overalls are cute. Oh, and those slap-on bracelets. We’ve already got frosted tips representation with Reese over there.”

She gestured towards Marlon, who was too absorbed in a page that Brody was showing him to defend himself. Louis, distraught, looked between the redhead and the blonde incredulously, and threw up his hands.

“I give up. You fashion mongers win.”

“Dude, you asked a lesbian for fashion advice. What were you expecting?” Violet giggled at Louis, who now was holding his head in his hands. “I rock Hawaiian shirts unapologetically all the time. Do better.”

“You’re right,” Louis raised his head, and twisted around to observe the courtyard around him. “Where’s Clem? She’s got better taste than both of you combined, and that’s saying something.”

Violet shrugged, piling a forkful of ramen into her mouth. A stray noodle hung from her lip, which she sucked back in with a satisfying pop, earning a grossed out look from Ruby.

Louis placed his hand on top of Violet’s outstretched arm, which she balled up into a fist, but didn’t pull away. “You know I love you, Vi. C’mon. If I didn’t abandon you the day you wore denim on denim to school, I never will.”

With a scoff, Violet sat back in her seat with a dismissive eye roll. “Lucky me.”

“Are you gonna come to the mall with me and Ruby after school?” Brody chirped up from her book, setting it aside to give Violet an enthusiastic grin. “We’re gonna pick out Halloween costumes. We’re thinking of being the Powerpuff girls. I’m gonna be Bubbles, Rubes will be Blossom. You’d make a perfect Buttercup!”

“As appealing as matching costumes with you two dorks is,” Violet snorted, shifting her glance from Brody to Ruby. “I’m gonna go see Clem’s little brother’s baseball game tonight.”

Louis’ and Marlon’s heads jerked up, and they shared a nervous glance, unseen to Violet.

“Thought you hated baseball.” Brody sneered, taking a huge bite out of her sandwich.

“I don’t hate baseball,” Violet protested with an eye roll. “It’s for AJ. Plus, it’ll be fun to watch adults scream at each other over a little league game.”

Louis anxiously chewed on the end of his straw, before clearing his throat. “You probably shouldn’t go tonight, Vi. You don’t like baseball, and it’s gonna be pretty warm, so that’s another level of unbearable.”

Marlon nodded strenuously at his point, and added onto it with a level of urgency. “C’mon, have a girls night out with Rubes and Brody! There’s that really good fro-yo place in the mall, and there’s a Hot Topic. That’s right up your alley!”

He meant for the words to be encouraging, but received a middle finger from the pissed off blonde across from him. “Oh, fuck off, dude. I’m sure the Hollister is right up your alley, isn’t it, ‘Generic Blonde Boy Bully from every 2000’s movie’?”

She dumped her empty tray into the garbage, and ignored the worried glances from Louis as she pulled out her math homework.

“Why are you guys being so weird about it, anyway?” Violet questioned the two. “I’ve got a Halloween costume. An old pirate outfit my mom put together for the middle school play.”

Brody tugged her knees to her chest, and leaned against Ruby’s shoulder, expression solemn as it always was when Violet and Marlon were fighting. Seeing this gesture and instantly feeling guilty, Violet let her posture relax, and gave a forced “sorry” to Marlon.

“Just looking out for you, Vi,” Louis tapped his fingers on the table, lips pursed as he thought. “We’re probably gonna ump it if we can, so... know we’ll be there.”

Violet nodded quickly, desperate to change the subject to anything other than this seemingly sore topic. “So, what are you guys being for Halloween?”

“Boo!”

Violet felt two hands grip her shoulders, and a hot breath tickle the back of her neck, and jumped up at the contact. She turned around to see a jubilant Clem, very pleased with herself.

“Gotcha.”

Violet softly shook her head, her stressed expression immediately fading as Louis made room for Clementine to sit between them. She pressed herself against Violet’s side, and leaned her head in the crook of her shoulder.

“Probably a bisexual.” Louis answered, earning a snort from Clementine, who’s breath tickled her neck.

She sat up triumphantly, and struck a heroic pose, winking at Violet. “What a coincidence! Me too!”

“Dorks.” Violet happily breathed out, turning her math homework over to Clementine, eagerly willing to check it.

Hey, it’s not cheating if she offers to help.

Violet’s heart swelled at the new piece of information she learned; that when Clem was intensely focused on something, the tip of her tongue protruded her lips.

A soft giggle made Violet lift her head, and she stared down the bashful Brody across from her, who’s eyes were happily flicking between the two girls. With a knowing glance, Brody took a sip of her iced tea.

Violet leaned back in her chair, a flush of pink across her face as she shifted away from Clem, so their shoulders didn’t brush against each other when she leaned over to help with a problem.

As the bell rang, Louis gave one last worried glance to Violet, which went completely over her head. “See you two later. Maybe we could all go out to the diner afterwards?”

“Definitely.” Clementine beamed, gathering her books and taking a red pen from her pocket. She scribbled an A+ on the top of Violet’s worksheet, along with a goofy smiley face with sunglasses. “I don’t have Lee’s teacher stickers with me, so that’ll have to do, superstar.”

A rush of heat flooded across Violet’s cheeks at the cutesy compliment from Clem. She slung her backpack over her shoulder, avoiding Clementine’s gaze as they walked out of the courtyard together.

“See ya later?” Clem raised her fist and softly thumped Violet’s shoulder to get her attention.

Violet gave her a weak smile, and folded her hands together anxiously. “See you later. I’ll meet you in the courtyard after post-session.”

Clementine grinned and tapped her newly donned pin, before giving a soft wave and turning around to make it to her next class in time.

Their glances back at the other over their shoulder lined up perfectly, and Violet’s face felt so warm that she felt it’d melt off if she didn’t make it to Chemistry and take her mind off of the curly-haired brunette that took up the majority of her thoughts.

The feeling of something small and sticky being placed between her eyebrows made her look up from her phone, her eyes meeting Clem’s, who was holding a pack of encouraging stickers she most likely stole from Lee’s desk.

Violet took the sticker off of her forehead, and frowned at the neon ‘SPECTACULAR!’ before sticking it beside her Camp Paya pin. “Y’know, now that I think about it, I am pretty spectacular.”

Clementine rolled her eyes before hooking her arm through the taller girls’. “Come on, we gotta get there before the game starts so we can get some snacks.”

The walk around the school and towards the baseball field was short and sweet, the slight breeze pushing Violet’s thin blonde hair out of her face.

The flimsy sticker flew off her jacket, so Clem ripped another one from the sheet, and placed it on the tip of the flustered blonde’s nose.

The second Violet scrunched her nose up, the second sticker detached and fell to the ground.

The two rounded the bleachers, and Violet’s eyes landed on a tall man in his mid-to-late twenties, with slick brown hair that almost reached his shoulders. He was currently helping AJ perfect his swing, the logo across the back of his jersey displaying ‘García’.

“Hey, da-“ Clem started, being cut off by Lee holding his hand out in front of him expectantly, eyeing her with suspicion.

“My stickers, Clem.” Lee sternly spoke, earning a sheepish huff from Clementine as she fished them out of her pocket and reluctantly passed them over. “Y’know, some students actually earn them and don’t have to steal them when I go to the teacher’s lounge.”

A bashful Clementine tugged on the side of his jacket. “That’ll be twenty bucks, please.”

Lee rolled his eyes before fishing a twenty out of his pocket, and passing it to Clem. “No more of those Pixie Sticks, okay? At this point, I’d rather you just eat a salt lick.”

His eyes landed on Violet, who he just seemed to notice was cowering behind Clementine. “Oh, hey Violet! It’s good to see you here.”

“I hope it’s okay.” Violet shyly responded.

“Of course it is!” Lee boomed, passing a cartoonish foam finger to Violet. “We’re gonna need all the manpower we can get to out-scream these asshats.”

Violet gave a weak smile, and was abruptly pulled away by Clementine tugging her by the arm. She happily flashed the bill between her eyes, and started listing the types of food that she couldn’t wait to introduce Violet to.

Happy and oblivious, the two intertwined hands and made their way down the street towards the corner store. Oblivious to the blue, icy glare that followed them from a distance.

“But without a doubt the most iconic on-screen lesbian representation to come from the 90’s and perhaps of all-time is unquestionably Xena and Gabrielle from ‘Xena: Warrior Princess’. A series which started airing in 1995 and spanned 6 seasons following the character of Xena, an infamous warrior on a quest to seek redemption for her past sins alongside the small town bard Gabrielle. It’s no secret that the writers for Xena purposefully implemented romantic subtext between the characters of Xena and Gabrielle from the very beginning. This subtext eventually bled into main text in the later seasons. Xena and Gabrielle were declared soulmates, they kissed on the lips more than once, and they even got married. It’s also been confirmed my the creator of Xena, Rob Tapert, in numerous interviews that the romantic relationship between the two was deliberate and carefully planted in the show. He and the writers had to contend with the censors - meaning that they were limited with what they could portray on-screen. Tapert has also said that they had written an episode where they actually outed Xena and Gabrielle but Universal told them that they couldn’t use it so they ended up having to do a rewrite. The show, at its core, is a piece of lesbian media but it’s a piece that is distorted by performative heterosexual elements for the sake of keeping the studio happy and to keep it marketable to as big an audience as possible. It’s been well documented that the writers faced a lot of barriers with the network desperately trying to censor any overt romantic implications between Xena and Gabrielle. However, the writers creative efforts to get around the censorship alongside the lightening in a bottle chemistry that Lucy and Renee had undoubtably created one of the most iconic lesbian couples of all-time. ‘Xena: Warrior Princess’ is an example of lesbian representation that managed to thrive against censorship and it was a lifeline for a lot of lesbians and bisexual women in the 90’s who struggled to see that type of relationship and love between two women anywhere else. It really is a special show and alongside Ellen is absolutely one of the most defining pieces of lesbian media from the 90’s” - @sapphicunderground

Please check out this wonderful creator’s breakdown of the negative and positive lesbian representation of the 90’s. It is thoroughly educational and insightful and it affectionately gushes about my favourite TV show and WLW relationship of all-time. I still don’t know if can call Xena and Gabrielle a lesbian couple or relationship given I headcanon Xena as bisexual but I can say that it is absolutely the greatest lesbian representation that I have ever seen in my life. And I implore people who want to see proper positive lesbian or WLW representation to watch this show. Sapphic Underground also has a 1 hour long lesbian review of ‘Xena: Warrior Princess’ on her YouTube that I would also recommend people to please check out.

When we talk of positive representation for LGBTQ media here on Tumblr or on any social media platform… I hate that Xena and Gabrielle are almost always ignored or even removed entirely from the conversation just because it was not explicitly textually confirmed as canon when it is easily one of the most authentic representations of WLW there is. Like,… in principle. Not just in TV but in any platform of art/entertainment that has ever been created. The creators for Xena went above and beyond expectations to provide something that was sorely missing in the landscape of art/entertainment media. Like if you watched it, you would understand what I mean with this. It’s revolutionary what they did with it.

AC/DC

There are those famous rock bands from the 70's and 80's that everyone has heard of and they each have 1-3 songs that have a 30 second riff that gets used in movies and commercials. And so as a Millennial who liked 90's grunge and 00's alt rock you just assume you like these bands too.

And when I was 19 and working at Arby's there was a little CD boom box someone brought and left in the kitchen so we'd put on music after we closed the dining room and one night the butch country GEN-X lesbian manager who I adored asked if we liked AC/DC and I said of course! So she put in an AC/DC Compact Disk and I listened to the entire album AND I FUCKING HATED EVERY SECOND OF IT. I was like I am supposed to like this but it is awful.

# 12 Post, part 2: FINALLY Top Ten 2D Animated Women’s List

So I am behind on my promise and seeing this net neutrality could happen here my top lady crushes. I try to go into detail. I have to admit number 10 going to be confusing see her movie has different animation styles, so I try find a picture of which one I like more. ON TO THE DELAYED LISTED. So I chose this design of ALL other, maybe has a close second, yet this (due to it enhances the Souls and Demons)

Now on to the reasons she wins number 10. Her personality, hopeful, positive, loyal, patient (still annoyed at Dante for what he did), honest, and just an embodiment of virtues. So besides being someone who so kind to have what happened to her is heartbreaking. Plus her overall appearance was attractive too. I am not sure why women’s almost naked I feel more comfortable seeing, yet men’s and non-binary I feel my demisexual side bit more antsy. Yes middle school me was both freaked out and at the same time enjoyed the film. Helps also I was figuring out my sexuality and came out in mid high school. Oh and she stands ups for herself and tries not to be a prize. Unlike the video game, she is not a pushover. D: XD Also I am now sure I am asexual.

9. 2000′s Titan AE, Akima.

Now besides being voiced by the attractive Drew Berrymore (fun fact is bi), the haircut, and those eyebrows, there more to Akima. I like she reminds of (the stunning) Zoe from Firefly due to both pilots (in a sense) so have the voice call the shots, she can take care of herself, knows how to fight yet be not a killer, and more. I do personally headcanon her as bi. She very low on the list for I admit I saw the movie sooner than I like to admit, so she not as much a childhood crush, as a new one. Only her animated style was constant, unlike 10. Sorry, the gif changed her appearance a bit, I know in the movie she of Asian descent.

Shocked how few royals are on this list, especially for being a 90′s kid. So why Princess Yum-Yum, even though she a weird blend of Aladdin (I bring this up to claimed Disney and if they or if they did NOT steal from this movie) Jasmine (I also have a crush on her too) of having a voice and using her power, but sometimes seems underdeveloped in comparison. However to me that is only when compared, so she to me is still fleshed out. I am happy to see her make the band of thieves due what she says, she merciful, she helps Tack and does her fair of saving the day. Not just a pretty face, she actual does something.

Now on to why I like her. First bonus is she cannoned as Bi as bisexuality. Now to the rest, she a character who in the grey waves of morals. She is either a villainess, anti-hero, or whatever. I enjoy also how much a tease she can be to Batman (thanks to her I can be like to my relationships too sometimes), she loves animals, she inspires me with her self defense and flexibility. Catwoman also she makes me comfortable being her dominate power force. I want to clarify I am waiting till marriage. XD I also like she kinda an example of a character, who can depicted with different racial background, body types, and more. I am aware some characters can not have such changes, yet Catwoman a positive example of done right.

One she stands up for what she believes in, she a quick learner, she gives off vibes like she could be bi, poly, or pan, and is fearless, yet gives mercy. So I like Disney a lot to choose ONE woman is not easy to do, yet I chose to one who I know for the fact I can say just has more to crush on. In May’s Idaho Democratic gubernatorial primary, 38-year-old Paulette Jordan prevailed over A.J. Balukoff, a perennial Democratic candidate and two-time loser. Jordan is a Native American and member of Idaho’s Coeur d’Alene tribe, who served as a two-term state legislator and supported Bernie Sanders in his 2016 presidential bid. Balukoff, 72, a businessman who formerly served on the Boise School District Board of Trustees, had a lot in common with Bernie (especially his race, gender, and age), but it seems to be the year for women-of-color in the rapidly pulling-to-the-left Democratic Party. Sorry, A.J.

We’re seeing this model play out again and again across the American political landscape this primary season. We will see more of it. The Democratic Party can’t free itself from the clutches of identity politics. And its ingrained Trump-hatred keeps it a prisoner of an inescapable conundrum. The “centrist” Democrat of, say, the Clinton ’90s, is now a dinosaur.

Jordan’s campaign website is full of the sort of liberal platitudes you might expect. She supports such boilerplate gems as “quality education, affordable healthcare, economic opportunity,” etc., and, of course, the standard lines concerning race, feminism, and LGBT issues. Paulette Jordan seems to suffer from Hillary Syndrome, in that she believes that her gender and ethnicity entitle her to be governor of Idaho. In an interview with the Nationshe stated: “We are not afraid, and will never again stand down.”

In the recent Georgia Democratic gubernatorial primary, African-American former Democratic Minority Leader of the Georgia House of Representatives Stacey Abrams thumped former Georgia House Rep. Stacey Evans (“The Battle of the Staceys”), 76% to 24%. Abrams, a 2016 Bernie Sanders supporter, was endorsed by Sanders and the radical far-left Moveon.org. Abrams is banking on the Trump-hatred found among the upscale, well-educated liberals in the Atlanta suburbs to deliver future electoral success.

In Texas, Lupe Valdez, a Latina, lesbian, and Dallas County Sheriff, beat the centrist Democrat Mark White for the slot to take on Republican incumbent Greg Abbott in this fall’s gubernatorial contest. This despite Valdez’s financial woes, when as recently as June she paid off $12,000 in property taxes in arrears in two Texas counties.

And then there’s Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who, due to her massive media profile, well, enough said.

All these contests have one thing in common. The farther left “progressive” candidate beat the centrist-moderate, sometimes by a wide margin (see Abrams’ Georgia win). All of these folks supported Bernie Sanders in his 2016 primary contest with Hillary Clinton. This highlights Sanders’ enduring credibility with the progressive Left, and his influence among Democratic candidates and the Democratic base in the upcoming November midterm elections.

In Idaho Republicans enjoy a three to one ratio in voter registration. Gem State voters have gone for the GOP presidential candidate in the last seven national contests. The past three governors have been Republicans. As is the current Congressional delegation (4). The May primary usually tells us who the next governor will be, whether it’s the Republican incumbent or the victor in a multi-candidate GOP primary for an open seat. This year that’s Brad Little, Idaho’s current lieutenant governor, who seeks to succeed his boss, Clement “Butch” Otter, the state’s sitting governor, retiring after three terms in office.

On the Democratic side, the gubernatorial nominee has been a sacrificial lamb for the past 23 years, since the late Cecil Andrus, a legendary Idaho political figure, occupied the governor’s office. This period in Idaho’s recent political history has seen hundreds of Democrats lose general election races on all levels across the state, from local municipal and county offices, to congressional and state legislature contests. Paulette Jordan faces an uphill climb, the political equivalent of scaling Mount Everest. She’s a “Feel the Bern” progressive running for the highest office in one of the reddest states in the Union.

That the Idaho Democratic Party would produce her as a gubernatorial candidate in the first place is interesting. The days of centrist Democrats such as Andrus (and another Idaho giant, the late Senator Frank Church) who could appeal to a cross-section of Idaho voters, many of whom worked in such blue-collar occupations as farming, ranching, logging, mining, and other employment related to the public lands, are gone. Then there is the cultural factor: A large percentage of Idaho voters are either evangelical Christians or members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons). In 2016 Donald Trump hammered Hillary Clinton 59% to 27% in Idaho (the remaining 13% going to down ballot presidential candidates Gary Johnson and Evan McMullin).

Jordan’s victory is illustrative of the progressive pull to the left of the Idaho Democratic Party. Despite the status of Idaho as a deep red state, the Democrats are no different in their policy positions than their national counterparts. For example, Bernie Sanders beat Hillary Clinton 78% to 21.2 % in the March, 2016 Idaho Democratic caucus. Again, there are fewer of those Andrus-Church Democrats around nowadays.

But the Democrats have no specific vision that they can present to the American electorate. It’s all identity politics coupled with a loathing for Donald Trump that is so visceral and deeply ingrained that it’s become pathological. The Democrats strain our credulity as they attack any and all of his policies, no matter their merit (which are significant, considering the booming American economy and the Administration’s foreign policy stances), thus risking — so the argument goes — their prospects for prevailing in this year’s midterm elections. In the midterm of a president’s first term, history should be on their side, but, then again, it was on their side in 2016. Wasn’t it?

As for Paulette Jordan, the far left minority in Idaho that enthusiastically supported Bernie Sanders in 2016 won’t be enough to give her the keys to the governor’s office. Trump- hatred is not a campaign issue. Neither is identity politics.
