I guess this will be my last post of 2023 - who'd have guessed - but I just very randomly remembered, and then set out to re-read, the wonderful

The Less Than Epic Adventures of TJ and Amal

and I've found it just as good as I remembered it to be. If you've never heard of this comic, I guess this is my recommendation to check it out! It's about two young men: Amal, who just came out to his parents, which didn't go too well, and who is now driving cross-country for his sister's graduation and to get away from it all, and the laid-back TJ, also on his way away from things and needing a ride. The two band together and get on their way, and what unfolds is a wonderfully atmospheric, sweet and earnest and funny story set right in the liminal space that cross-country roadtrips inhabit ... the sort of journey that you don't finish as quite the same person you started it as.

The author manages to tell so much of the inner thoughts and feelings of the characters simply through "camera angles", skillful moments of silence and clever work with panelling, plus the fun and natural dialogues and the careful, though-out way it all unfolds, which all results in something I'd call just as much a love story as it's a story about growing up a little more, facing the things you're running from, making decisions in life ... but also sometimes taking a little time to sing along to terrible songs in the car, see some nature, fall into it, and accidentally rob a store. I've read it a good three times now and I highly recommend it!

Fun Home and Ghost World are two classic graphic novels that you'll definitely like if you like Wet Moon. I also really love the Sky Doll series, but it's a very different genre, more surrealist sci-fi and also much raunchier but if you don't mind the triggering stuff in wet moon you'll probably like it. The Less than Epic Adventures of TJ and Amal is also great.

My wife Shauna reads more comics than I do and she has very good taste! So she also reccomends Daughter of the Lillies, Skin Deep and Kill 6 Billion Demons. Which are ongoing webcomics, and O Human Star and Digger which are completed.

This convo w/ my friend is making me realize that I don't really talk about keeping up with webcomics and how much I love webcomics much anymore, but like. I am still hooked into the scene (Sakana is gonna be updating again aaaaaaa) and keep up with plenty of them.....it's wild to think about how many webcomics I have read that have drawn to a close, or that I was there for the full duration or almost the full duration of.....The Less Than Epic Adventures of TJ and Amal definitely comes to mind because like. Firstly. All time fave comic, romance comic of all time, aaaa,, but secondly because I own it in print and it's so wild to see something you followed for so long condensed into this lovely, slender little book, and be able to sit and read it all again as one story.....augh. I'm dreading when Gunnerkrigg and Sakana come to an end eventually cuz I'm gonna miss them so much but like, also, the idea of being able to own the entire series in print....[pines]

thrust//doll: steaming ahead in active development. this is taking most of my time at the moment.

ghost barrier: page 7 is drawn, and I’m working on giving a proper archive on the canmom.art site. once that’s done, and maybe page 8, I’ll post it. or you can get a look right now if you sub to the patreon. wink. I would like to commit to a regular update schedule but lets get the infrastructure up first eh.

animation night: haven’t missed a week yet and i’m not going to. I added a new introduction to the archive! I want to fill in some of the gaps, but we’ll see what time permits.
