Wild Kratts - Fish Out of Water Review [Spoilers]
April is finally here, and with it, three new episodes have been released on the PBS Kids Video App ahead of their release. At the time I'm posting this, it is midnight and the one hour special "Our Blue and Green World" is yet to air on televison and streaming, so I will get to that when I get to that. Given that I have already reviewed No Name Dream and Backpack the Camel, I'll give a review to this episode as well. Spoiler warning and opinions ahead under the cut
Tumblr media
First New York, then Hawaii, and now a goddamn University on the list of areas I would never expect these guys to film. Bros are everywhere.
As someone who is about to graduate high school, I feel IMMENSELY jealous of the college students who saw the motherfucking Kratt Brothers filming an episode on campus. I can already begin to see the floods of social media posts bragging about this on Tumblr and Twitter threads.
Tumblr media
Ok I feel bad for being a bit salty earlier, I actually think it's really sweet how these people outside of the show can share their interests and expertise in biology and physics to help children educate. The entire live-action opening where they study the locomotion of mudskippers is honestly really sweet, and we haven't even gotten to our main animal yet!
Tumblr media
God these are such cute animals. But beyond that, the term "fish out of water" could not be a more fitting title. They have joints like we do, can adapt to different environments, and can swim and climb like we can. This is probably my favorite live action segment because of how well structured the clips and movements are and just how fun it is seeing these little blorbs move around the place.
I should talk about how it took us half a decade to see a mudskipper on the show, and 13 years overall to get a focus episode, but so far, up to a great start and definitely worth waiting (for the most part).
Tumblr media
Oh so is it like the Hermit Crab episode where in all of the official releases they leave out the determiner but in the actual episode it's there? This has no overall bearing on the episode but I just felt the need to point it out.
Tumblr media
I should check off on my S7 bingo card about seeing the old inventions again because holy shit it's been almost a decade since we saw the Butterflier XT
Also can anyone identify those butterflies? I know for a FACT that those motherfuckers aren't monarchs because of their patterns (the only pattern variation in butterflies is sex-linked, and while I'm aware they live in Asia, this again, does not look like a match) but they also aren't viceroys because they lack the line around their wings. I only ask this to bring up my next point.
Tumblr media
I thought the Butterfly Disc we saw in Season 1 was specifically programmed based off of Monarch Butterflies. But as established (until proven wrong), these are not monarch butterflies. So unless Aviva retrofitted or reprogrammed the disc to be multi-familial, as in they can touch any butterfly regardless of classification and activate accordingly (like with the Crocodile, Dragonfly, and Gecko Discs), the activation should not work. I only ask this because while it seems miniscule, Chris' decision to bring out the disc is what sets off the plot - It's what causes him to loose the discs in the butterfly swarm, so I feel like, while not a critique, it's a legitimate question as to the direct programming of the discs vs. the animals used to activate.
Tumblr media
Man, Zach wasn't even in this episode and somehow they STILL lose their discs? (Actually, I am pleasantly surprised that they didn't take the opportunity to have this be a Zach-related episode).
You think they'd put a tracker on the collection or encode a chip the actual discs so that they wouldn't get lost this easily. This again, sounds like a nitpick, but earlier seasons set up a firewall for the Creature Power Discs and a tracking device/rocket-device on the Creature Power Suits and gloves because of how frequent these types of contingiences are, so there's really no excuse for this.
Tumblr media
(Suck my ass PBS Kids Video App, I'm still able to get high quality snips even with your bullshit formatting!!!)
They really went all out with the "other-wordly" vibe that the mudskippers' territory gave off. Once again, we waited two years for this to be put to animation and to see come air.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I've made enough jokes around these situations in the show, so I think we'd all benefit if I just changed the subject: That front-facing mudskipper is fucking hilarious.
Tumblr media
*Martin's voice* - Slimy Skin-breathers!
Okay, but I actually did not know that. At all. Even 10 years later, this show is still teaching me new things about animals in the most beautfully unexpected ways. This is one of the many reasons I will never give up on the show.
Tumblr media
[Unexpected angst in bagging area - Also, with the inclusion of No Name Dream, which will air two days before this episode, that brings our Krangstt quota to #2]
Okay so I really like the set-up here, and it genuinely was a surprise seeing Jimmy angst in this episode as a subplot in a series that rarely operates on A-plots and B-plots (unless you count the villains' schemes which are usually just A^2 plots) like most shows. And as someone who legitimately was going through rough times (S7 was actually one of my few reasons to keep going), I heavily related to Jimmy. So yeah, a Jimmy angst episode? Can totally buy. What I'm not gonna buy is how they execute it with the ending, because that and the implications.... yikes...
Tumblr media
C'mon! "Mudspitter" was right there! Right there!
Tumblr media
Ok, here is where my main problem with this episode's subplot is. If I could boil it down to one word, it would be: Incomplete. Jimmy feeling inadequate based on an observation he made is one thing. Him immediately leaving afterwards on a whim moments after said observation is completely another and doesn't align that well.
Like, this would only work if Jimmy had attempted to be a fish "IN" water. If he tried to help Aviva and Koki with the data-research and inventing, but he failed, and they politely turned him down. Or if there was any basis as to why he suddenly disregards his piloting skills or teleporting, whether he doesn't care or doesn't think them to be enough for him to fit in. Like, he wants to be in on the action because some part of him doesn't feel like sitting around by the teleporter is enough. What I'm saying is, there is no pathos. I personally find it to be relatable, but on a narrative level, it doesn't work. I know the "character feeling left out so they leave" thing is cliche'd, but there's a reason it's a cliche, and that's because it follows a lot of writing beats that this particular episode doesn't, so on top of being cliche'd as fuck to begin with, it feels very awkward. And this is going to be apparent both here and in this episode's climax (which I also do not have many kind words for,) so I had to use my allotted time to talk about why this doesn't work.
Tumblr media
Could... could they not call him on his Creaturepod? Could the brothers not call him on his Pod? Did he even have his Creaturepod?? Again, there are so many plot-holes in this B-story that could've easily been written around with a change of dialogue or scenery. Have Jimmy's Creaturepod be shown left lying around which makes them realize they have no way of getting him back to the teleporter in time. Jimmy would have no reason to even bring his Creaturepod on his adventure, so that just raises even more questions. Like, this isn't an active diss on the writers, but I think there should've been more proof-reading of the script since this is a massive oversight.
Tumblr media
I think now is the time for me to bring up this question I've had for years now; How exactly does the teleporter work? In several episodes, we've seen that there is a coordinate code in the teleporter that allows it to be sent to the target. Koki's "the communication queen" as Aviva puts it, so she'd likely be able to triangulate the brothers' location. So I'm not sure why the show presents this as a struggle for Koki. This isn't the only example, so I won't hold it against the episode, (they have this be the case specifically to emphasize the point that they need Jimmy, which I can forgive) but it's another piece of lore that I should probably theorize about lmao.
Also
Tumblr media Tumblr media
YOU HAVE LITERALLY TELPORTED THE CREATURE POWER DISCS FOUR TIMES.
TWO OF THOSE TIMES BEING IN A ROW.
AND ONE OF THEM WAS FOUR EPISODES AGO IN THIS EXACT SAME SEASON.
This whole episode spent the past five minutes making its main characters look incredibly idiotic for the sake of its B plot.
Tumblr media
Once again, this episode's spitting facts that I didn't even know.
This is actually a neat seguay, having the brothers figure out the abilities of the mudskippers while exercising their own cool abilities. It feels really natural, and again, is an inventive way to show off the locomotive abilities of the mudskipper.
Tumblr media
I feel like this falls very well between "accurate enough to be admirable" and "uncanny." I can (maybe on my deathbed) get used to this suit's design (though I'm partly glad Chris doesn't activate it because spoilers, he doesn't).
Tumblr media
I've given this subplot a lot of flack, but credit where it's due, even with its misses, it does hit with the emotional beats.
Tumblr media
Very conflicted on this:
On one hand, Jimmy actually taking the initiative to miniaturize is pretty ballsy. The show, despite not being serialized, does develop its characters in a way that you can sense a clear difference of them when you compare the modern seasons to the earlier ones. And this can be seen as a positive development for Jimmy, since it's his "Creature Adventure."
On the other hand.... back to what I was saying about consistency. Why did Jimmy bring the miniaturizer?? What was his prompting?? Was he planning on shrinking himself down the whole time? Like, he left his friends for god knows how much time and is now out of nowhere shrinking himself down to fish size because he feels inadequate? Uhm, Jimmy, ever heard the idea of therapy?
Also, again, very weird presentation of the episode. They don't at all put any attention to Jimmy's coms and whether or not he has them, (which would easily solve a bigger issue of why he's not contacted), yet they have him carry the Miniaturizer with him. Now, the latter is plot-relevant, but so could've been something about the Creaturepod.
Tumblr media
This [from what I interpret] gets Jimmy out of his slump, making his "scientific discovery." Not realizing that his job of piloting and teleporting are equally important. Again, this is structured poorly. I like what they were going for, but it shouldn't have been the only thing that altered the trajectory of this subplot. Again, he can teleport discs to the brothers and pilot and while those are mentioned later on, it's not something he comes to himself in an "oh shit" moment. So this just feels unearned and weird. I really hate how harsh I am, since it's a Jimmy centric episode and it was the #1 requested thing on all the chat-boards during the hiatus, but this is one of those things where it has to be done right if at all. This isn't done right, and the fact that it takes up 50% of the episode just... ugh.
Tumblr media
You can't tell it through screenshots but with the way Aviva says it and the scene cutting to her and Koki laughing at it, I'm 98% inclined that this was a specific innuendo, and ngl, I kinda laughed too.
Tumblr media
Oh look, it's Kenge's cousin! [For you Lion Guard fans that also recognize Wild Kratts] - [I was inclined to make a reference to Jessie, but that felt in bad taste considering y'know]
Ok, but that has to be an Asian water monitor. Correct me if I'm wrong. What I'm definitely not wrong about is that their bites contain venom; To a human it's not lethal, however to small prey, including mudskippers, or anything around that size, it's lights out. So yeah, Chris and Martin are fucked.
Tumblr media
Ok this line is absolutely badass.
Also, grey?? Grey?? I thought Jimmy's signature color was orange/yellow? Or red with the implication of the tail episode? Great, now there's another color that'll be in the debates for his future Creature Power Suit.
Tumblr media
Once again, this arc feels weirdly put together. This notion comes up specifically at the climax when it should come up beforehand as Jimmy realizes his worth. Because otherwise, it gives the implication that he knew this all along and yet still felt like a fish out of water, which doesn't mesh together properly (it could, if the episode actually tried to do so which it didn't).
The episode, Sea Otter Swim, does this plot so much better. We see Jimmy's doubts, and we see how he overcomes said doubts in a way that is presented clear to the audience, and the climax where he actually realizes what he's capable of feels earned. This is not earned. So even though I am rooting for him to win, this whole thing just feels messy.
Tumblr media
So is nobody gonna ask why Jimmy left his post? Is Jimmy not gonna tell everyone why he left, or at the very least ask why nobody bothered to call for him? Is nobody going to at least let Jimmy know that he can't just... abandon his post without warning because of the fact that they need him? Is Jimmy not going to come to that conclusion himself? Is anything in this episode gonna be earned??
This entire ending feels like an ass-pull: First off, Jimmy and the brothers had enough time to head back to the miniaturizer and then the Tortuga, and in none of that time, did Jimmy ever give them the Power Discs? Why? Yes, it was for the sake of the fake-out defeat/joke, but was there any reason why Jimmy just kept the thing hidden waiting to give it to the brothers?
The entire emotional climax to this episode is basically everyone putting Jimmy on a pedestal. It's unsatisfying because there wasn't any acknowledgement or follow up to Jimmy's conflict at the beginning, nor is the lesson learned in the right way, and the conclusion just overreacts by hyping up Jimmy instead of just having a reasonable "We're a team!" thing, or through any self-actualization of his good qualities that Koki pointed out. None of it, friggin' none of this is earned! Now it comes across as Jimmy being uncharacterstically boastful and cocky and the others just kissing his arse. That's probably not the intent but it was the result.
Tumblr media
That is actually like, so fucking cool. I have massive respect for all of these people, like legitimately (also, considerning that's the exact opposite of what Zach does on an ethics scale, I find that really interesting). But beyond that, I think this episode has the best live action segments ever, they are so ingenuitive. I could easily see someone at my high school showing a clip of this episode in robotics' or biology class.
CONCLUSION:
PROS:
The live action segments.
The info dumps about the mudskippers.
The Kratt Brother's adventure with the mudskippers.
The animation
The background music (a lot of which is recycled from earlier seasons)
CONS:
Everything else (specifically the B plot). I feel like the writers wanted to give Jimmy his own storyline, either out of interest or seeing how popular the character was in chat-boards, but they didn't know how to do it so they just went through the motions without really connecting anything at all, so it's a lot harder relating to the exact conflicts in some cases, and you feel disatisfied by the cimax. It reminds me of what they did with Vitani in the Lion Guard finale, a case of giving this one character the spotlight, but hitting all of the wrong marks that does the character and the audience a disservice and leaves a bitter taste in the viewer's mouth by the end credits.
This is the first episode this season that has made me cringe, primarily off of its premise, not just a particular scene, a dated pop culture reference, or a weird-looking Power Suit. It is the first to make me cringe because of its story, which again, the B-plot takes up 50% of the episode, so it's constantly in your face. It's definitely not bad, not hateable bad, and it's far too early in the season to call it the worst, and there are definitely worse episodes out there, ones that have aired and ones that probably will inevitably air, but I can safely say, thus far, it's the one Wild Kratts episode that I enjoy, but only to an extent. The live action segments were by far the only thing that I got extremely engaged in, but other than that, and the other pros, it's not that good.
Final Ranking: 6/10: Above Average, but Needed Improvement.

Okay, I know I haven't updated in awhile, but I couldn't stop thinking about Theo so I thought I'd try to finish this chapter.
So here's a sneak peek at the next chapter of "I Hear You're Looking For An Anchor"
Also I would really love some feedback. Is it too boring? Too ooc? I think I use too many proper nouns. Should I just stop writing this and work on something else?
Anyway, here's some more human!Theo and Liam being dumb in denial.
"Face of a Killer: LIAM"
“So, they’re burying the bodies. Do you know who’s doing it?” Mason asks as they leave history class. Liam could tell he’d been itching for information since last night. The whole thing feels so surreal. He was worried something big was coming.
Liam shakes his head as they walk down the hall together. “No, Scott’s figuring it out,” he sighs. “He told me not to worry about it.”
“Then don’t. Look, why don’t you come out to Sinema with me tonight?”
“Do you really think a movie night is a good idea right now?” Liam looks at him, conventually concerned, as he dodges out of the way of the rowdy hallway. “What if- what if Scott needs me?”
“Not a movie, a club. It’s the club.” Mason looks at him, holding his hands up excitedly. “It’ll be fun. Hot girls. Hot guys…” Mason trails off as Liam tilts his head and his face takes up one of curiosity. It was like when your ears tingle because somebody was talking about you. Except somebody was actually talking about him. “Liam?”
He shushes Mason as he hears Theo ask Scott, “What’s his deal?” in a faraway voice.
Following the sound, Liam peeks his head around the corner behind a row of lockers. He holds his arm back when Mason tries to look, too. He sees Scott and Theo outside the Biology lab, which was an unusual sight, considering. Why would Theo be talking to Scott? Still trying to get under his good graces, probably. Liam couldn’t help it, he was curious.
“What do you mean?”
Theo sighs, scratching the back of his head. “Do you think I might have a shot with him?”
A shot with whom? Liam? He flinches as Scott lets out a surprising laugh. “Oh! I mean, I don’t know, maybe.”
Theo’s eyes flicker to Liam’s and a cocky smirk covers his face. “You sure about that?” Liam glares at him menacingly.
“You should ask him,” Scott says before leaving.
Liam and Theo’s eyes don’t leave each other’s. Not even when Theo walks past him, still with that half-assed grin and Liam glaring at him like he could pretend to hate him. His eyes soften as they follow his every move until he disappears at the end of the hall. He had to be messing with Liam, right? When Liam turns his head to look at Mason, he’s met with a suspicious grin.
An uncalled for suspicious grin. Liam wasn’t doing anything wrong. He was just looking! Just looking could mean a lot of things, though. Especially in front of Mason’s eyes.
“What?” he asks innocently.
“Mhm, what was that?”
“What was what?” Liam shrugs. There was no avoiding this around Mason, though. He saw the glances between them, if that’s what you want to call it. Liam tried to convey his hatred through his eyes, but felt like he was failing big time. Of course, Mason had to see right through the façade.
“The smiles and the eyes and…” Liam’s eyes widen for a moment before he turns tail the other direction. “You like him!” he hears Mason exclaim behind him.
“Who? Theo?” Liam laughs. “Don’t you think that’s a little crazy?” he asks as they stop at his locker. He dials the lock, “I mean sure, he’s hot but…” Liam stops, staring at the lock in his hand.
But what? He saved Lydia’s life last night. He drove him home, not that he wanted him to. Is there any reason at all that says Liam shouldn’t like Theo? Maybe he wasn’t as bad as Stiles says after all. After last night, he felt like he finally got a glimpse of who Theo really was. He needs to give him some credit. At least he was trying. If Theo is so evil, like Stiles thinks he is, why would he go through all this trouble?
“And you like him!”
Liam sighs, shaking his head and pulling the lock open. “Doesn’t matter. Stiles says he’s bad news and I should stay away.” He places his history book in the back of his locker.
Mason chortles, “Since when do you listen to Stiles?” Liam would’ve replied, something along the lines that Stiles could shove it and he could do whatever he wanted. He grins instead as he sees Stiles standing behind Mason. Based on Liam’s reaction, he knew exactly what had Liam averting his eyes behind him. “He’s right behind me, isn’t he?” Liam chuckles, nodding, and Mason whips around. “Hey man, we were just—”
Stiles isn’t interested, though. He was looking down in the dumps, actually. He looked like he didn’t sleep a wink last night. He pats Mason aside. “Yeah, that’s great Mason. Liam, I need to talk to you.”
After giving each other a look, Mason leaves and Liam shuts his locker door, turning to Stiles. He was concerned about his state and knew it must’ve had to do with Lydia. Everyone knew how he felt about her.
“Hey, how’s Lydia doing?” he questions.
“I don’t know. Last I heard, she was still in surgery. I’m going to go see her this afternoon, though.” Liam nods. “Have you talked to Theo?” Stiles’ voice takes an accusatory turn, making Liam frown.
“Not since he drove me home last night. Why? Did something happen?”
“Actually, yeah. A big something— Wait, you let the enemy drive you home? He knows where you live? Liam, what exactly did he say to you?”
Liam shrugs his hands into his pockets. “Not much.” He raises his eyes, his voice cracking. “He was nice.”
Stiles’ eyebrows reach his hairline as he exclaims, “No, no! Listen to me, Theo is not nice. I was right not to trust him.”
Liam glowers at him. “He saved Lydia’s life last night. Don’t you think it’s time we give him the benefit of the doubt? He’s not the bad guy here.”
“Liam, don’t get me wrong. I am eternally grateful that Lydia is alive, more than anyone. That doesn’t excuse what he did, though.”
Liam sighs, “What did he do?”
“I was going through his medical records and—”
“Stiles, you can’t do that!”
“Well, it’s a good thing that I did because you’ll never believe what I found.”
Liam’s eyes close for a moment as the blaring school bell surrounds them. Ultimately, saving him from this conversation. “I don’t care what you found. It was Theo who saved Lydia. Just… try to have a heart and give him a chance.”
Walking past him, Liam hears Stiles mutter, uselessly, “That’s what I’m trying to tell you.”
Whatever Stiles found, he didn’t care anymore. Stiles can be his own problem. He was done listening to him. He was just searching for answers that weren’t there. Was it so hard to think that Theo was just trying to get through high school like the rest of them?
Liam was passing the library when he heard a distinct heartbeat. It was odd, not like anyone else’s he heard. He couldn’t detect a rhythm or pattern to it. It just was; always at a rushed pace. He planned on using his free period to practice lacrosse, but this seemed more beneficial.
Following the sound of his heartbeat, he finds Theo at the very back of the library. He was in a secluded spot where nobody could see him, hunched over textbooks and notebooks around him. Liam hid partially from view behind a large bookcase. He could see Theo’s furrowed brows pulled together in concentration. His gelled hair was in a disarray. He definitely looked like he needed a break.
Theo didn’t notice him until he’s dropped his bookbag onto the table with a small thunk. He’s startled for a moment before he realizes who it was that disturbed him. For the barest moment, Liam thought Theo looked scared, but it was quickly smoothed into his residential smirk that he always saved for Liam. He wished he wouldn’t look at him like that. It felt fake and impersonal. He wanted to see Theo’s real smile.
Liam sits down in the chair across from him and Theo caps his pen, leaning back in his seat.
“You’re not worried about being seen with me? What would Stiles think?” Liam looks around their vacant little corner pointedly. Theo chuckles, “Point taken. So, have you made your decision?”
Liam was in the middle of pulling his school work out of his bag and pauses when Theo asks this.
“About what?”
Theo dips his head. “Whether you like me?”
Liam scoffs, shaking his head in disbelief. Just because he was sitting with him didn’t mean anything. “You’re lucky I’m even talking to you,” he says, taking his history notes out.
“Oh, I don’t think luck has anything to do with it,” Theo smiles at him smugly.
“It doesn’t matter, anyway.”
“And why’s that?”
Liam grits his teeth. “I have more important things to worry about than whether I’m caught sitting with Theo Raeken.”
Theo frowns, playing with the pen in between his fingers. Liam watches his long fingers twist this way and that. “Stiles still doesn’t trust me?”
Liam’s eyes jump to Theo’s and he replies timidly, “I don’t think so.”
He’d think after saving Lydia from bleeding out on the police station’s floor, Stiles’d be a bit more lenient. He gets Stiles has problems with what happened with the Nogitsune. He has a hard time trusting people, especially ones who get too close to the pack. Like Theo has been trying to do.
Theo leans forward on his elbows. Liam gives him a disgruntled look as he comes closer. “Do you trust me?” Theo asks.
Liam doesn’t know how to react to this. He wasn’t expecting Theo to ask him that. He wants to trust Theo. He could show Stiles how trustworthy Theo really was. Can Liam trust him, though?
“That’s a matter of opinion.”
“Then what’s yours?”
“I think…” Liam looks at Theo, then. Looking into his eyes, he saw something. Something that made him want to trust him. Theo wasn’t the monster here. “I think, what you did for Lydia was very brave and Stiles should be thankful.”
“Is she going to be okay?”
“She will be.”
Next scene will be Liam and Theo at Sinema :)

Sooo I just checked Aphmau's community posts, not expecting anything but maybe a new Meemeow, and instead I found this:
Tumblr media
Combining this with the Vidcon questions from last(ish) year, I think we might just be getting news about MyStreet Season 7 this year; if not then maybe the MCD revival is being brought back or we could be getting another My Inner Demons season.
No matter which way it goes, I am so excited!!

You know what the problem with Season 8 of Game Of Thrones was? Besides the writers being completely incompetent….
They created unnecessary conflict and no resolution. Every single turn it was tension, shock value and death. There was no substance to the writing or to the story. Everyone was timid, reduced to one liners or just not themselves. The one good scene in the entire show was when Jaime knights Brienne. It was wholesome and then they decided to turn Jaime into a fucking pussy again.
The one scene that had so much potential or two scenes, between Dany and Sansa - I still think the conflict there was dragged out and unnecessary, Sansa could have helped Daenerys with Cersei and Daenerys could have used Sansa as an advisor because Tyrion was being stupid. Then the scene between Jon and Dany, just communicate, talk about it.
And Sam suddenly wants to be sad about the father who literally told him he was gonna kill him???
The most best way to have ended GOT of they wanted shock value would have been a post apocalypse like ending. The Night King decimates everything, Cersei blows up Kingslanding and somehow our heroes build a new world starting from the ashes.
I’m getting back into writing for Game Of Thrones and currently working through some of my anger at the butchering of a great show with great actors and a great world. So stay tuned.

See the further irony is:
That in using 'Mall Goth Sauron' as the take on Dark Willow over 'misogynist has character randomly killed for LULZ' it also allows for greater accountability on the one hand and for Season 7 to thematically focus on repairing all this damage in the midst of facing an enemy of shadows reliant on lies to further itself. The only way to break the Druj is the absolute Truth in a very Zoroastrian sense. Characters don't get to neatly skip past accountability for their actions, and this would spiral over into further later seasons with the essential reality that in an otherwise lower-level setting this one random girl from California is a Dark Phoenix-tier reality warper and the most powerful person on the planet, or the universe.
And the questions of how that power could and should be employed on the one hand and that Willow is essentially a Doctor Strange type who beats up Gods and Eldritch Abominations for her regular line of work where her counterparts deal with the more 'street level' crises would in turn be the logical conclusion of where the show ends. She doesn't do as much physical fighting for the same reason that Stephen Strange never uses magic to go punch the Hulk in the face, her narrative role is ultimately that of Sorceress Supreme of Earth, with literally nobody in an ancient established war anticipating that this one random ginger from California was and is the new Sorceress Supreme and that if they had had such awareness the realities are that this power would and could have taken worse forms.
Unfortunately for the world, the reality too is that it is a shy computer geek who has a not at all subtle dark side and the usual teenage anxieties and insecurities given the equivalent of being able to reliably actually do things other people might dream of but can never do.
But again as long as Dawn Summers being a good thing is a narrative convention that's established memory magic is a poor choice to show the corrupting effects of reality-warping. It's a case of 'yes as established in canon all of this is true for that one season but then they decided to retcon it, so the fans are not obligated to care about it any more than the canon does about this itself.'
#willow rosenberg#tara maclay#dawn summers#you will never convince me as long as Dawn Summers is a plot device that 'memory magic unforgivable' is anything but bad writing#it was the choice used but there are other equally toxic things that could have been done instead#the basic theme of 'very powerful person decides things for another in an abusive fashion' works just as well without it#Tara's growth arc in refusing to tolerate abuse even from the person who brought her out of her shell can stand perfectly fine#it works even better with a budding Sauron than abruptly deciding 'wholesale memory rewrites good retail unforgivable.'#killing Tara off also denies her any sense of closure or ability to get that closure with the person who does this#the entire element here with the way things went down is bad writing from Point A to point Z#and it's also easily forgotten but Tara wasn't in fact intended to be Willow's love interest#she was replacement Willow for sympathy points#her entire arc as such became Willow X Tara but it was a choice from actor chemistry#So in giving Tara a role besides 'Willow's Girlfriend' it arguably does better by her character#tara x willow#btvs#and yes yes the 'scale changes things' argument is true but only to a point#it's really no different to introduce Dawn than what Willow did#if the retail is wrong so is the wholesale and the decisions to make this that point of no return is an avoidable mistake#plus honestly imagine a Season 7 Tara going 'sweetie no' and a Season 7 Willow dealing with those consequences in real time#equally one can have Tara's cold turkey approach stick exactly as it was#and serve as her role in the time bomb because she's a product of an abusive family and not an infallible moral guide#she rightly sees the problem and at least tries to address it when nobody else did#but unfortunately her solution was pouring gasoline on the fire and then vacating the range where the fire would burn#still further between that and Willow being human enough to resent being told to take that pain and do it going it alone#there'd be plenty of reasons for a surviving Tara and Willow to spend season 7 broken up as is#Tara would not at all be wrong to be wary and not want to touch reformed Sauron with a 400 foot pole#Willow equally would resent someone whose bad advice helped create the problem and who evades any recognition thereof#good old fashioned drama with entirely human motives

‘The city is full of innocent people...’ Jon tried to reason with her.
‘Like every city of the world,’ Daenerys countered exesperated.
‘This is not Essos!’ he finally screamed, having lost all patience, it didn’t matter anymore, trying to appease her, he realised. The games were over, he didn’t have to keep her satisfied while she preached and boasted of her cruel past deeds. ‘Even if you burn the city, they will surrender until they can smother you in your sleep. Wars are not won by raining fire upon the people and expect them to be loyal!’ Jon shouted at Daenerys, he couldn’t hold back, it had been months of keeping silent, of pretending, he was repulsed, by her morals and her brute force replacing any strategy she could have ever displayed.

Curious Archer/ Mad Archer Ship Headcanons
Tumblr media
One of two canon Next Gen ships, Alice Swan-Jones and Robyn Hood/Mills!
These two were one of the only things I liked about S7. Initially, I wasn't going to have Alice here at all, since I took the multiverse out of my re-write, but I love her waaaay too much to cut her out.
Tropes: True Love || Hopeless flirts || Fairytale romance || Love at first sight || The grumpy one falls for the sunshine one || Protective Couple
Songs: Dead Sea- The Lumineers || Mess is Mine- Vance Joy || Yellow- Coldplay || Still Into You- Paramore || Love Me Like You Do- Ellie Goulding || All of Me- John Legend
Headcanons Under the Cut: (Changes from canon) (Also keep in mind I changed Alice's parents to Killian and Emma in this AU)
Since both girls are teenagers in this AU, their relationship is going to have a different dynamic than in canon when they are both adults. I just wanted to make it clear that I’m not trying to infantilize Alice due to her mental illness or time stuck in the tower, but because she and Robyn are still teens, and it’s only been a year since Alice escaped her tower.
They met a year after Alice escaped from her tower. Since they had Snowing’s “I caught you in a net” meeting in canon, I gave them the “smacked you with a rock” meeting for this AU.
Alice ended up in Storybrooke, trying to find her lost family. Robyn saw her and thought she was a spy, chasing her down and tackling her in the woods. Robyn was surprised that she was a (pretty) girl, and Alice wacks her with a tree branch to escape. True love, baby.
After everything settles, they do a formal introduction: “I’m Robyn Hood. The new Robin Hood, anyway. The old one was my dad.” “New Robin…so Nobyn Hood?” “...no.”
Robyn was a goner from minute one. Unfortunately, she can’t flirt for shit. Alice, on the other hand, flirts by just being herself, which makes Robyn incredibly flustered, which makes her flirting worse, and on the cycle goes.
Alice knows that Robyn likes her, but she finds herself being cautious about growing close to anyone, not wanting her “bad days” to ruin any relationships she might have in Storybrooke.
Once Alice gets settled at Storybrooke High, Robyn takes it upon herself to show her the ropes and protect her from any perceived slight. Faces have, and will be, punched.
Everything is slow for them, as Alice has never been in a relationship (of any kind), and Robyn is trying reeeeeally hard not to fuck this up.
Robyn calls Alice “Tower Girl,” “Lovely,” and “Starlight,” because she’s a sap. Alice calls Robyn “Nobin,” “Yobin (Robyn with a ‘Y’),” and “Love,” because she is also a sap.
The first time Alice has a “bad day” in front of Robyn, she freaks out and thinks that Robyn will think she’s a psycho and leave. Instead, Robyn talks with Alice and comes up with plans to help her during her “bad days,” and episodes.
Alice has dragged Robyn out of bed to go stargazing with her more than once. True to form, Robyn complains, but she won’t ever say no to Alice’s smile.
They practice their magic together, though Alice is much more gifted than Robyn. Robyn tries not to let that get to her.
Alice’s favorite activity is to watch Robyn do archery. She loves how focused and passionate she gets.
Robyn’s never been all that touchy-feely, but Alice is touch starved from being alone in a tower since she was twelve. Robyn suddenly becomes VERY touchy-feely. With Alice, at least.
Robyn has previously dated Alex Boyd, before they came out as aroace, but that ended real quick, much to Robyn’s heartbreak. Alice hasn’t dated anyone, but during her time in Wonderland, developed a crush on Will and Anastasia’s daughter, Penny, which never went anywhere.
Both Robyn and Alice knew pretty early on that they were Not Straight. Robyn had a brief stint when she was considering she might be bisexual, but decided that lesbian fit her better. Alice just flat-out knew she liked girls when she accidentally conjured some non-heterosexual romance books while trapped in her tower.
Zelena, Regina, and Emma (and Robin, when he comes back to life) all ship the heck out of them. Killian, old fashioned man that he is, is concerned, but comes around eventually.

Thought process: wow I have so many tabs open on my Firefox what the hell was I do-
Tumblr media
Carry on.
#The other 7 tabs were also H2O related. Namely Max and Gracie's pages as well as Charlotte's#I also had a really funny page open that described mako island completely incorrectly? Describing lost ruins from a bygone civilization#Scattered across the island. Which I guess could technically be from Mako Island of Secrets (with the merman chamber) but like...#The images they attached were of old decaying bridges and temples so I don't think so!#This fic has been a journey and a half#Season 2 is suddenly at least 5 episodes longer#In my defense I really think it'll be worth it for the payoff at the end. I hope.#I'm giving the girlies (me) everything they've (I've) ever wanted#Cruddy rambles#... It is essentially just the show but Lewis is a fish now#I love all the other merman Lewis fics too but they do tend to deviate from canon a lot. Which isn't a bad thing!! Just not what I'm vibing#With atm so I'm writing what I want#I mean it is a whole rewrite so deviating from canon is implied but y'know what I mean? I just want s2 but with a few tiny details changed#A lot of them tend to be removed from the '[generally] slice of life but with mermaids' style of canon#Which is what I'm really vibing with atm as I'm currently in a tumultuous period of my life#So like absolutely no hate to those styles. I fucking adore them (and am heartbroken one author who posted recently never came back after#I posted a comment on their work talking about MA Zewis 😭😭😭) because holy shit their stuff slaps hard as hell and I love all of them#I'm the number 1 merman Lewis fan#I Stan every single person who has posted art or writing for that style of au#Just to make it absolutely fuckin clear that I mean no hate whatsoever. I just wanna throw my own hat into the ring yknow?
