Even though the ides has passed id like to teach yall a thing: julius caesar was not a tyrant or dictator, at least not more than the average roman conqueror turned leader. The senate was just really afraid that he would become a king or emperor (even though he was ruling democratically), so they went and killed him. This was just about the stupidest thing they could do because the roman people really were not happy and therefore lost and/or booted 60 senators and caesar in a ridiculously short amount of time. This left a big ol power vacuum in Rome that Caesar Augustus, as Julius’ heir, filled. By becoming an actual emperor.

TLDR: senate stabbed leader for his potential to become emperor, left power vacuum for actual emperor

Found this old WIP, enjoy a snippet

When Nico had left camp it was difficult on Lorelei. He was the only person she had consistently been able to count on. While for a long time Nico hadn’t been consistently staying at camp he would still show up at least once a week for Lorelei. She’d been young when he discovered her. She didn’t quite fit in. She had been dressed in a little red coat with a pristine white dress underneath. She wore shoes similar to Mary Jane’s that were perfect, unscuffed pleather. She wore a little white bonnet to match her dress. Her socks were frilly and white as well. She had sleek black hair. He found her and knew she was like him so he took her back to camp with him. Almost immediately the child was claimed by Hades. She was quiet at first. She was eight Nico learned. Six years younger than he was. He was fourteen. He quickly grew fond of Lorelei. She reminded him of himself. She didn’t know much about herself or her past. She had likely been ‘saved up’ the way he and Bianca had.

Now Nico stood waiting to tell her his big news. He was nervous yet excited to be a father. This was his first child and truthfully he hadn’t been married very long. It felt strange that he and Lorelei were in such different stages of their lives. He was a working adult with a wife (spouse? He wasn’t sure which term his gender-fluid spouse preferred. He’d have to ask Morgan when he got the chance to) and was getting ready to welcome his first child into the world. He had long since stopped going on quests and the like. Meanwhile Lorelei was enjoying what could easily be seen as and she wouldn’t realize are the best years of her life. She could afford to goof off. She was likely going on her first quest soon and had yet to understand Death pulling those she cared about away from her and ripping them straight out of her arms. He understood that all too well. She was laughing and dancing and didn’t have one care in the whole world. He envied that. If he could be like that then he would in a heartbeat. Life had other plans for him though. It had brought him his wife though. A Roman. Ironic considering that Greeks and Romans had hated each other since the dawn of time. One might try to compare their love story to that of Romeo and Juliet’s but that would be incorrect because for one neither of them died, two everyone was supportive of them, and other reasons Nico didn’t care to think of right now. Also Morgan hated Romeo and Juliet. Claimed that while they could understand why it was so famous it just wasn’t their style, wasn’t for them. He had more reasons it just would have taken up too much of his time and energy. Those would become increasingly limited in the coming months so it’d do him well to learn early on how to preserve it.

Lorelei reminded him of what was beautiful in life. What he had fought for. She was enjoying herself and that was beautiful to witness.
