Design Breakdown: Lyodin

For the hell of it, I'm going to break down all the design inspirations for my OC Lyodin/Lygron/Raiga (not really settling on a name). There's quite a lot of elements I tried to pack into one character. If you can't tell, I really like cats.

ThunderCats: The 2011 designs are kind of the basis for Lyodin and follow the elements which Dan Norton the art director laid down. The facial markings, fur patterns, eyes, and open toed footwear being some of the main ones. Specifically, I took the most from Lion-O 2011 for the hair, eyebrows, and eye color and classic Cheetara for the eye markings. Very 80s hair metal, just how I like it. I'd also say Lyodin sounds like Will Friedle's Lion-O, though Mike Erwin would be another good VA.

SSJ4 Gogeta (DragonBall GT): I like the look of the bolero fusion vest with the trim combined with SSJ4 fur pattern, tail, and eye markings.

Sabretooth (X-Men): He's always been one of my favorite villains. I think the fur collar/mane on his costume just looks badass so I added it to the fusion vest of Gogeta. I also like the coloration, giving it a prehistoric big cat aesthetic, not to mention the power set.

Lyodin's based not on smilodon exactly, but more the extinct cave lion or American lion. An under represented animal of prehistory. Also kind of based on golden tigers, ligers, and tigons.

Akira Yuki (Virtua Fighter): Adding more to the vest, I really like the pattern on Akira's 2P outfit from VF5. I incorporated something similar but changed to look more like tiger stripes with a darker outline. Previously the stripes were more simple and similar to something like Wolverine. I might try and use a similar pattern on the arm and leg bracers to make the design a bit more consistent.

Marcos E. Garcia (Terra Formars): I like the spikey hair look, but also the kind of sideburns and markings around his face. I also love Marcos' bare handed/clawed fighting style, by far my favorite fight scene in the anime. Brutal.

Aisha Clan-Clan (Outlaw Star): Aisha doesn't provide a lot of visual inspiration, but more along the lines of powers and fighting style. Aisha and other Ctarl-Ctarl have claws and immense strength, and they burn through a lot of calories. She can power up using energy from a full moon, turning her more feral and even can transform into a fully animal tiger creature. I have something similar in mind for Lyodin, specifically Raiga in my Spirit Forged fic where eating plenty of food empowers him, and at his strongest can assume the form of a liger.

What's more, Aisha isn't just claws; she's a skilled fighter who specializes in wrestling. I had the idea that Lyodin would do tiger kung fu but combined with grappling, wrestling, and acrobatic Luche Libre moves. Claws are designed for grasping prey, not cutting, so grappling makes sense for a fighter with clawed digits. Raiga might also borrow a few of Aisha's personality quirks, like her diet.

Bit Cloud and Liger Zero (Zoids Zero Century): This one is a bit more of a stretch, but Liger Zero's whole motif kind of fits in general, especially in regards to Bao Hu Shao, the liger spirit that is linked to my character. Just a giant divine cat beast, like the white tiger Byakko. Liger Zero's Strike Laser claw is one of the few claw attacks that's treated "heroically" if that makes sense. I have a hard time settling on the hairstyle, but I tend to imagine it like Bit's. I also sometimes imagine Lyodin sounding like Bit's English VA Richard Ian Cox, who also did Inuyasha and Quicksilver in X-Men Evolution.

And that's all I've got off the top of my head, but I think that covers most of the design inspirations. I think I might do an update to tweak some bits like the bracers.

Celebrating the FSA anniversary by drawing 4 different Fours from different Links Meet AUs. I’m a day late because I didn’t know that March 18 was the anniversary. I was planning on drawing these guys for a while, several months ago, I just forgot to. Fun fact, the day before the 18th, quite literally the day before, the 17th, I thought, “I should finally draw these guys the day before the FSA anniversary so I can post them on time.” Like. Wtf. So I’ll be making a calendar eventually so I know when all the anniversaries are.

Anyways, some thoughts on the guys:

Four from @linked-maze - His hair is so scruffy, I love it. He’s so optimistic and happy.

Four from @heroesspirit - I didn’t color it in here, but I love his ombré hair, the orange fading into a yellow looks so pretty.

Four from @linkbetweenlinksau This is just devolving into me gushing over the hair. Anyways I love the hair and the little hair tie thingy is SO good. Also love the eyes.

Forge from @echoes-of-courage - I didn’t have to space to draw the multicolored sash :( One of my favorite aspects of his design honestly. I’m glad I was able to draw the ponytail, I love ponytails.

If you're not too busy, would you mind listing some of the things you think count as death flags for Mr. Spender?

There's the obvious fact that he's the "old" mentor to group of young protagonists, but what else do you think would count?

OHH BOY ok so I'd think I'm a crackpot for this but since we're talking about Zack "Foreshadowing" Morrison. I have some thoughts

No harm in leading with the (chronologically) first thing that jumped out at me:

This one IMMEDIATELY made me antsy whenever I came back to it after my initial read, and considering Zack has referred to it on twitter in the past as one of their favorite jokes it's definitely not been forgotten about.

Second, the sheer amounts of near-misses, jokey or not, of Spender narrowly avoiding specifically lightning

Again, not much, but it's weird that it happened thrice, latter two of which had real gravitas rather than an one-off joke.

And third, Spender himself. He's repeatedly shown himself to be kind of a self sacrificing idiot, as well as prideful to a fault. Granted, it's both him and Mina trying to take on all the responsibility of saving Mayview and its inhabitants from their fate.. But Spender is exactly that right measure of doesn't-value-himself-enough (chest footprint aftercare or lack thereof), having an obscene amount of power (enables his loner act + pride) and poor judgement that has the capacity to put him at great risk. And it has!

Spender has not only shown low enough self-esteem to view himself as the de-facto scapegoat for the safety of the town, but also prideful enough to make very bad calls that end up in people, often himself, hurt (COUGH FORGE INCIDENT COUGH)

This is all conjecture, but it's definitely enough to make me worried about him :') Even if all this doesn't mean he'll necessarily die he's definitely getting (even more) seriously injured at some point. I love the guy but he's so far doing a horrible job of convincing me he wants to live bad enough to circumvent at least that

i do feel we don’t do nicknames as well as we used to. millennials may indeed have killed the nickname industry. they just aren’t as good any more. aren’t as popular. you might get the odd shortening of a name, sure. your ellies. your mats. even your single initial nicknames. certain people only call me by my surname. but there’s no creativity in it anymore. it used to be an art. my mum has a friend that everyone calls chalky because his surname is white. my dad has a friend they still call sparky. he’s in his late fifties. can you imagine everyone committing to the bit like that nowadays? you try and get sparky to catch on nowadays. you seen the disdain you’re met with. people will just turn away from you. my mum and her best friend made up a meaningless nickname for my grandmother when they were children and that was the name her flowers spelt out at her funeral. what happened to that. nicknames just aren’t clever anymore. no one’s willing to put the work in. it’s like no one cares. head in my fucking hands.

Hi friends!

Well… here I am, sorry it’s been so long, life kind of fell apart there for a little while. I can tell you how much all the comments and support have meant to me. I’m very much determined to keep writing, and as proof here’s a little snippet of the upcoming chapter of Blade of Silver, Forge of Blue. I don’t know when the whole thing will be out buts it won’t be long! Anyway, here it is, enjoy!

Excerpt from BOSFOB Chapter 4

Overwhelmed by the sudden surge of power and malice, Zuko falls back onto his ass with a sharp thunk. The bird hovers as if suspended by unseen strings, wings spread wide, unflapping, large shadows looming ancient and hungry in the sharply cast corners of the room.

This is real. Zuko thinks with heart-pounding terror. It’s real it’s real it’s real –

“Now.” The bird, the Spirit, lowers itself to the floor, taking measured steps until it’s close enough to spring up and perch on Zuko’s frozen knee. “Shall we begin again?”

Zuko swallows, Music floating through his brain from a far away place. He tries to collect himself enough to speak.

“What… are you?” He whispers.

“That’s the wrong question, boy.” The bird mockingly cocks its head. “Ask a better one.”

Distantly, Zuko understands how dangerous this is. Every lesson he was ever taught about Spirits and the Other World flashes through his mind, Uncle’s grave voice preaching softly over fragrant wisps of tea - Speak plainly. Show no fear. Offer nothing of yourself to them, and ask for nothing in return. The words were always spoken with an undercurrent of fear that Zuko never understood, and now, sitting before a creature barely larger than his thumb, he suddenly understands.

Although it wears the form of a sparrowkeet, Zuko can tell there is something more to the creature in front of him than feathers and skin. It crackles in the air like lightning, painting the back of Zuko’s tongue with the flavor of ozone, and causing the hairs on the back of his neck to rise. Still something deeper in him cries - I know you. I know what you are.

Had a dark idea for my Spirit Forged fic;

Raiga, an immortal half spirit who has been alive for over a century, likely would have sired one or more offspring with human women he'd fallen in love with. These offspring would have had the same or similar animal/spirit powers.

My idea is that the White Lotus would, in an effort to protect world order and snuff out any potential threats to the Avatar, would have hunted these offspring down and either imprisoned or killed them. Maybe not when they were babies, but perhaps when they were old enough to start causing trouble.

When Raiga reawakens in Korra's era, he'd eventually find out and be pissed, especially if all his children were dead by then, save for perhaps the last one he had before he was put into hibernation (most likely during Aang's era).

You know I'm still a bit curious about the items Ostromir stole to take on Zadd.

The cube itself seems to be clearcut Exalted tech, whether reengineered or not I cannot say, given that its activation gives off a similar teleportation effect that is heavily reminiscent of Notha's means of teleportation.

Although clearly this Magesterium cube is a more limited and lesser version than whatever Exalted alterations Notha made to herself given that it was clearly one time use item whereas Notha could seemingly pull off her teleportation as many times as she wanted.

I am intrigued by what those golden globe things were that Ostromir brought along with him though. Were they used to power the cube? Were they even used at all?

Finally, there's the star saber. Evidently, its got to be soulforged if the little red soul ball was any indication as well as its shared namesake with the Delta Soul and Star visor catalysts were any indication.

By the looks of it I'd say the Magesterium were trying the bring out the best potential of soul forging though what has me curious is how many of these "relics" do they still have on hand.
