The Untamed ep10, collage 20: Banishment

MY: Earlier, just earlier, I personally saw him letting Xue Yang escape. So, I went to argue with him.

NMJ: You're lying!

MY: All I've said is the truth! I swear! ....... To be able to meet Scarlet Peak Master in this life, I have no regrets.

NMJ: Since you saved my life, I won't kill you. Leave. It doesn't matter if you'll go back to the Jin Clan or go someplace else. Just don't ever come back.

MY: Clan Leader! I... am grateful for your kindness in recognizing my talents.

Just a little note here. In the "I... am grateful for your kindness in recognizing my talents" Meng Yao uses the expression 知遇之恩 zhiyuzhien into which @hunxi-guilai offers a fascinating look in this excellent post. I think it gives great insight into the relationship between Nie Mingjue and Meng Yao, and sheds light into the depth of betrayal felt by Nie Mingjue and the pain so evident in this scene.

Using the zhiyuzhien also interestingly both parallels and juxtaposes Meng Yao with Wen Zhuliu, who, as pointed out by @hunxi-guilai , uses the same expression to explain to Wei Wuxian why he is willing to die protecting Wen Chao (which he does, because he cannot not repay the zhiyuzhien). Meng Yao saves Nie Mingjue by throwing himself in front of Wen Zhuliu's sword, ready to give his life (and thus, I guess, repaying the zhiyuzhien), which Nie Mingjue states as the reason for sparing his life, and only banishing him for the betrayal. But the special relationship of knowing is no longer there, and even the best future efforts of Lan Xichen cannot repair it. And in the end, it is Nie Mingjue who ends up dying for it.

Hi! Welcome to my main blog, which is dedicated to the C-drama The Untamed - Chen Qing Ling (CQL) and it's source novel The Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation - Mo Dao Zu Shi (MDZS), and everything related to them. A fair warning though: most of the content here relates to the CQL.

For my own content, I mainly play with screencaptures, so it is mostly stills, occasionally with some ranting and bits and pieces of meta thrown in 🙂.

I have three ongoing "projects": the Untamed collages, the Untamed costumes and the latest one, the Untamed portraits.

The Untamed collages are just that: collages of screenshots (sometimes with some of the subs quoted), which I am making, mostly, for each scene of each episode, to create a kind of "photographic reference" to the Untamed. I have started posting collages in reverse order (moving backwards from the last scene of ep50) into a sideblog, @theuntamedcollages. I've also made collages for the first 16 or so episodes and posted them in this blog, they can be accessed by episode through the tags ⬇️. They will, eventually, be updated a bit and reblogged into the sideblog in correct order. Update December 15th, 2022: collages for episode 48 done and posted. Check them out :)!

The Untamed costumes are a series of posts about the various wonderful character costumes, a costume per post. This will also be a long-running project 😁. The posts I've already made can be accessed through The Untamed costumes masterpost *updated January 23rd, Lan Wangji's outfits*.

The Untamed ep10, collage 9: Disciples of Baoshan Sanren

LWJ: May I ask where you two learned your martial arts?

XXC: My teacher is Rogue Cultivator Baoshan.

XXC: Brother Wei, I'm sorry. Even though I'm a disciple of Rogue Cultivator Baoshan, I was the newest one. So I only knew that Rogue Cultivator Cangse was a disciple my master was proud of, but I never saw her.

WWX: Don't know when I will be able to meet Grandmaster.

XXC: Teacher lives secluded from the rest of the world and never remains in the same spot. Plus, the disciples who decide to leave the mountain are never allowed to go back. That is our sect's tradition. But if Teacher saw you, she would definitely be happy.

So XXC broke the Sect's tradition for Song Lan. And gave WWX what little consolation he could (and probably gave WWX the idea for the Golden Core Story). And this one meeting was the only time WWX saw his Senior Uncle, the tie to his mother he just found, alive. I think this meeting, not in the novel, makes the whole Yi City arc so much more poignant.
