I was talking with my friend about how Toph becomes the chief of police, and we actually figured out a sort of rationality for how Toph became a cop, and why she stopped.
Because the thing is, Toph loves being the authority, she doesn’t like being the rule-maker. She loved teaching Aang because she got to be directly in charge, she got to give commands and watch them be carried out directly. With her earlier life stuck following rules, the chance to exercise her power is a welcome opportunity’s
But she hates being a rule-maker. In one of the recent comics, when her metal bending school starts becoming larger and more official, she starts getting disillusioned. It’s gone from the freedom of being in charge to the responsibility of being in charge.
So tying this back into being the chief of police. She founds the police force, and maybe it started off good. She starts off with a small personal crew, and gets to exercise her authority while stopping crime and getting to help bring order. But then the organization starts expanding. She’s no longer directly involved, she’s passing orders along to people who then pass those orders down a chain. It becomes less of a small task force and more of what we think of as a police force. There’s corruption and dissension, her role goes from being in charge to the one making the rules.
And that’s why she dips out and goes to live in a swamp.
i agree that toph hates (making/enforcing) rules, and that she enjoys asserting her agency after being stifled by her family, but i don't think that's why she liked teaching aang... toph is genuinely a good teacher. she likes passing on her knowledge and expertise to an attentive audience who values her skills and wisdom. she genuinely thought that tormenting aang would be the best approach to getting him to earthbend because it would force him to stand up for himself and situate him in the mindset of an earthbender, and we do see that it's an effective approach. you could argue that she also does enjoy tormenting her friends, and yeah, she can be pretty abrasive, rude, and violent towards them, but i think toph enjoys teaching specifically because it allows her to demonstrate her insight and connect with people, which are actually two of her greatest strengths.
conversely, stopping crime and enforcing the law is something toph has absolutely no interest in whatsoever. she is repeatedly established to hate cops, rules, and any form of state-sanctioned order. her morals are very relative and situational, and she empathizes far more with "criminals" than with agents of the state of any kind. of course she would want to stop anyone who does harm to vulnerable people and/or her loved ones, whether through their ideology or their actions or both, but she would never do it through state channels, even if that state was being run by her friends. as much as you may try to rationalize it, there is simply nothing established in the text that justifies the decision to make toph a cop, and in fact it directly contradicts many key facets of her character, including but not limited to the fact that she vehemently hates cops.

Is this the first gay rep in the comic? Idk why, might be because of the rainbows, but I feel like there’s been one before but I can’t think of it
Definitely a minimum of Wallis and Purple to be sure!I would hate the first gay rep to be ‘compulsory straightness’ Indigo

About your fic comments post, is it alright to say to an author that we like how they handled the character or that we feel they improved upon the character?
“I like how you handled this character, especially [something that was highlighted in the fic that either you also like about the character or hadn’t noticed about them before]” = FANTASTIC. IDEAL.
“I like how you handled the character better than in canon/I feel like you improved upon the character” = Please reread the original post, this is the exact thing I was talking about. Tread with EXTREME caution, and unless the author has explicitly stated that they hate the EXACT thing* you are about to complain about--namely, the portrayal of the character in canon, in this example--then keep that shit to yourself and, again, refer to the original post.
*(I mean it. Someone expressing dissatisfaction with one specific aspect of a show doesn’t mean they hate EVERYTHING ABOUT IT, and for that matter, “dislike” and “hate” are not the same. Going off about how ABCXYZ all SUCK when all the author said was that they think Y could have been handled better......is not okay. The only negativity it’s really acceptable to bring into comments is negativity that matches a) the scope and b) the intensity of the negativity explicitly brought up by the author.)
“I feel like you improved on this character by doing X” can pretty much ALWAYS be rephrased as “I loved how you did X/focused on X aspect of the character; I’ve [always loved that aspect of them and struggle to find fic that really appreciates it/never really noticed that aspect of them in canon, and now I’m tempted to rewatch some of their scenes in a new light]!”
Do that.
Don’t bring negativity into the comment section of anyone who hasn’t asked for it. Don’t respond with negativity to someone presenting you, for free, the product of HOURS of a labor of love.

@thedoomcard10 They complement each other very well on several levels, and this level in particular is no exception.  I wouldn’t say her only major obstacle was external, though.  The train treating her like a second-class person was a major one, but Lake really did have to overcome some internal problems--it took her a while to be willing to open up and properly make friends, to let go of some of her animosity, and what finally got her off the train was her embracing her own nature and using it to fool One-One.  I’d say there’s an almost even split between internal and external for her--which works very well, because this is her story first and foremost, and the breadth of her obstacles to growth is excellent to watch her work through!

I get that Dion's weight is irrelevant because space, but what about his mass?
It’s complicated.
Dion is a silicon-based lifeform that developed in an environment of extreme pressure, radiation and heat. Therefore, the inside of Dion’s body must replicate this environment like a containment or life support unit.
It does this by simulating an extreme amount of mass within the body to create a similar gravitational pull to a neutron star. With the right ingredients, nuclear fusion occurs. This is the environment Dion can survive in.
So the outer shell of the body must nullify gravity, which keeps it in equilibrium with the environment around it.
Clearly there’s also going to be radiation shielding that prevents him from melting everything in range, but it’s the first point that causes his weight to be null, because gravity from both outside and inside don’t affect the body.
