Thedosian botany:
Elfroot 🌿

The most unimportant piece of information that has motivated me on my entire Thedosian Botany Project of Eternal Suffering at this moment is only mentioned in one codex. Mentioned, not even described.
It has no known real world counterpart, and because BioWare does not feed us with food and plant lore it is now my sole fixation at the moment to describe this plant. This spice. This piece of botanical material that is apparently so edible and so delicious that the Avvar value it for cooking.
Antivan Cord-seed.
BioWare, I hope it exists in da4 or some other media installment because this is just as bad as your origin era "three rare herbs from the Frostbacks are needed to make this" and you sell the item like they're elfroot potions. Which were the original motivators for me to expand on Thedosian botanicals.

Thedosian Field Trips, p.7
Chapter 7: Trees (Link to AO3) How many trees are there in the forest? That is a question Aena never thought she would have to answer one day. And yet here she was, walking in line with the other students. They were slowly progressing along the slope as their names were called one by one, and then over again. Each time, they would yell the trees they had identified since the last call. It was part of some evaluation thing. To see if the forest changed over time. Which it did, of course. Trees die. Trees grow. Lightning strikes. To be honest, she found this all a little dumb. Maybe it was because she preferred zoology over botany. “AENAAAA!” Of course Sera had been chosen to call out the names. Who else, really? “ANSWER, BUNNY GIRL!” came Sera’s voice again. Rolling her eyes, Aena shouted. “Two oaks and one birch.” Birch. Birch. What a strange word.
And it kept going. They had to cover the entire forest. It had been divided in different zones so they were sure they would miss a tree. Mid-afternoon, they were finally walking through the last zone. “ISAAAAAAAAA!” “I’m dead!” yelled the voice of the Rivaini. By which, Aena assumed, she meant she was now out of the forest zone. Students who were situated higher on the hill were going back to the station one by one, when the decrease in width of the forest meant they were suddenly out of the last sampled zone. Lucky.  Aena still had to wait for some time, she was almost at the foot of the hill. Sighing, she kept walking. Okay, so. One more oak. And was that… hornbeam? Yes, two hornbeams. And one beech. Damn. Birch, beech. Sometimes she wondered what the biologists were thinking when they were naming things. Finally, it was Aena’s turn to reach the exterior of the zone. She was free. “I’M DEAD SERA!” she screamed one last time so her friend wouldn’t be calling her name again. She gently waved at the student on her left, then turned on her heels to walk back to the station. Retracing her steps through the forest, she was already thinking about what they had to do with the data of the day. She wasn’t sure she had entirely understood what the teachers had explained during the morning meeting. She would have to ask them for some precisions… “I’ve got you!” Aena yelped and almost tripped on a small tree coming out of the ground. Ugh, what a birch. Luckily for her, a strong arm caught her by the elbow, preventing her from falling head first into dead leaves. She parted the hair that had fallen into her face, only to discover a smiling Solas. “You birch.” She said out loud. “I will take that as a term of endearment.” He chuckled, and the sound made her smile. He was so… She straightened herself and turned towards him. His hand was still on her arm. Nice. He was so nice. “How did you enjoy this day?” He asked her. “If I’m being honest, counting how many trees are in a forest wasn’t exactly on my bucket list.” He shook his head with a little smile. “I know it can appear trivial, but it does provide useful information.” He raised his hands as to take the forest around him as evidence. Suddenly she felt like something was missing. Nooo, please touch my arm again, right now I don’t care about trees… but she was soon looking at him once again, and listening to his beautiful voice once again. “This part of the Brecilian forest is still mostly free of both human and industrial influence,” he stated. “And comparing its evolution and biodiversity with other parts of the Brecilian – but also with the Dales, the parts of the Tirashan we can access, the Arbor Wilds or the Planasene forest… It can help in the debates with governments. These old forests hold some rare species, and they have to be preserved.” “Not to mention all the elvhen ruins scattered in those woods…” Aena added softly. She had been involved in some elvhen protests in the past, and knew first-hand the threats elves had to face. And her older sister had become a major figure after all. She was strong, inflexible, and was determined to use the system to win more rights for the elves. She was the first elf accepted into the prestigious Wycome University. She was Clan Lavellan’s First and an example to them all. Solas titled his head. “Yes, these old forests are also important for the elves’ culture, I suppose.” She was surprised at his dismissive tone. He was coming from Arlathan University, true, but he didn’t really seem like one of them… Did he truly think of himself as anything else than an elf? If that was the case, she had bad news for him. Reaching up, she took the tip of his ear between her fingers. His eyes widened at the contact. “You’re an elf too, y’know. Here are your pointy ears.” She told him in a serious tone while stroking them. They had now turned pink. So, he liked this. Good to know. After a few more strokes, she lowered her hands and nervously smoothed her hair against her cheek because she could feel herself starting to blush. Um. All of this was definitely easier when she was partly hiding. Solas seemed thoughtful for an instant. Ears still pink, she noticed. She liked that. “Yes.” He began cautiously. “Yes, you are perfectly right. I should remember this. Scientific objectivity can sometimes make you… detached from the reality of things.” She smiled and took his hand in hers, changing the subject. “They will call me when they’ll have returned from the store. Care to take a walk with me in the mean time?” “With pleasure.” He answered, gently squeezing her hand. They started walking down the forest paths. At this hour of the day, the beams of the sun were a soft golden and illuminated the forest, creating a mysterious glow. Aena started thinking, as always. She was often thinking too much, but this situation was so uncommon that… well, she had to think about it carefully. And be clear about everything. Establish the rules, perhaps? She could hear Isabela’s voice scolding her for avoiding the topic. Yes, she had to. Awkward topic it would be then. She inhaled and exhaled deeply, then timidly looked up at him.   “You know…” She started. “I’ve been thinking about what you said yesterday.” He didn’t interject, letting her time to gather her thoughts. He seemed to understand she needed time. She was grateful for that. “You know, about the… physical thing. That you had assumed I was doing… what I was doing… just because I only wanted something physical. Well… In fact, I’m not physical. As a person. I mean… I can’t help it. With friends it’s ok, but…” “I understand.” He assured her. “What I want to say is that… Hmm. I like you. You interest me. I find you cute. And I don’t mind this.” She added, raising their joined hands. “No, wait, that sounded wrong… I mean, I like this! But also, I’m not used to that. It’s the first time I’m interested in someone and that this simple thing – holding hands – suddenly becomes something nice. Ah, I’m awkward. Sorry.” “You are doing just fine, Aena.” She blushed when he said her name. Damn, his voice made everything sound beautiful… She stopped walking and raised her head to him, smiling shyly. “Come down here, wolf, so I can kiss you.” She pleaded. “And the wolf must bow to the gentle bunny.” He said solemnly, brushing his lips against hers. They resumed walking through the forest, Aena’s heart lighter than before. She was handling all this very responsibly, she could be proud. She could be happy? She was impatient to discover what the future would be made of... His voice broke off her inner musings. “So you find me cute?” He suddenly said, chuckling. She rolled her eyes. “Of course, that’s what you remember of our discussion!”

Thedosian Botany
Have a taste of what I’m working on for the Healer’s Field Guide and Handbook. It’s Dragon Age Day, I’ve been hoarding these little samples for today. I’ve got most of it written, and am now just working on the art.
“Plain” Elfroot is modled after the Origins elfroot. Bitter Elfroot and Royal elfroot are from Inquisition naturally. Love those vine like little beacons. Gossamer elfroot is a hybrid between the two. Its suppose to look like it has spidersilk on it, as its name “gossamer” implies. I love how it rendered out, but I’m holding that till I get to tease the final layouts.

Botanical Projects
Since I have no chill and I want to talk about what I’m working on... So I’ve mentioned the Healer’s Field Guide previously, and mentioned how, depending if it goes well I would work on a more exhaustive resource. Which honestly if it doesn’t I still might do it but not to the scale I dream of. That is the Healer’s Handbook. So lemme tell you the difference because it is sort of the embodiment of the original project, but I want to release some plant stuff before DA 4 so we’re making a compact version first. So the Healer’s Handbook would be more encyclopedic. Where the Field Guide has the illustration and basics of medicinal and alchemic uses, as well as where to find the plant and a description on a two page spread. The handbook would have more thorough spread with each plant at about 8 pages. Why? Because I like plants and I want to write more.
This would include the basics of the field guide as well as additional information that expands into more in-depth ethnobotany, additional recipes, astrological meaning, ways to cultivate, herbalist notes, best practices for the plant, and a section of additional uses.
I have a rough idea of what I want as well as all the plants canonically mentioned in the game that serve, historically in the term of real plants, medicinal and alchemic uses. So... This is the plan for the Handbook as of now. (Its long due to all the plants so its going under the cut sorry)
How to Use This Book: Plant Structure Building Your Apothecary Maintaining Your Apothecary Cultivation Harvesting Herbs Drying & Storing Herbs Making Your Own Remedies

Something that should be noted is that there are multiple listings for Spindleweed, Deathroot, Embrium, and Elfroot. As in not only their varieties but a common name. I explain why I chose that in the foreword of these projects, but to summarize simply, it is because in the scope of the game it would be rather cumbersome for them to have varieties for every area. So, for the sake of realism and to expand in the area the games cannot and allow for all designs and changes in the plants we see from Origins to Inquisition, I have the “Common” variety. Which is simply their name.
It is also derived from the fact that there is some cut content that I came across where they did fiddle with things. Like the landform of Spindleweed. There are a few more cut content plants that would be 100% speculative as I only have their designs and none of the possible content for them and as such I’m still debating if I want to include those.
But yeah. Along with my maps and other things I’m working on this. Though the botanical project is taking up my main focus do to its easy accessibility when my health knocks my legs out from under me.

Hearler’s Field Guide Info
So apparently some one brought the plant nerds to me, so welcome. It was a burst of interest and it made me realize I haven’t really posted much on what is going to be in this. So little background. Was going to be a small project, but I have found *checks notes* 209 individually unique plants mentioned at some point in Dragon Age lore. So... thats too massive for a first time book project and I was originally wanted medicinal and alchemic plants only. Which still rounds up to somewhere around 170 plants.
So for my sake, and the sake of being a new resource, I focused on plants unique to Thedas specifically. And let me tell you 51 is much more manageable. Still, there isn’t a lot of information on plants. Heck, some of the herbs introduced in Inquisition don’t even have a codex. So to be clear, there will be canon info. But I’m also going to be adding personal thoughts and real life botany and herbalism to flesh it out further. But I will be adding a list of sources for the information so people can find the canon stuff for their own reference. This is intended to be a source for lore nerds, fanfic writers, and just plant people who think things are neat. That said, if this goes over well I do intend to eventually put out a more exhaustive resource of all the plants (as well as make up some food recipes) for both medicinal/alchemic plants and culinary plants. Hopefully by then DA4 will be out and I can add new information and draw more pretty plants.
Oh also, this is written in universe so the “authors” are:
Petunia - a Vashoth herbalist who likes to use her poison resistance to eat things she probably shouldn’t.
Greenie - her dwarf alchemist partner who treats her when plants fight back and the brains behind making more effective recipes in the book. She really wishes Petunia would stop eating things but... you know. What can you do?
What you can expecting the field guide once it is finished:
How to Use This Book: Basic Tools Plant Structure Harvesting Herbs Drying & Storing Herbs
Recipes Toxins and Antidotes Agents and Extracts
Seasonal Availability Types of Medicinal Herbs Biomes Speculative Designs - This is where I will explain what parts are speculative and the thought behind my decisions.
Here is the prospective page layout, and yes, the nug will be there for scale.
Tumblr media
Yes, I also made some botanical names for them, have a sample. (Still in review but we heading somewhere :D)
Tumblr media
I’m also fiddling with making small info things for people who want to use it for TTRPG or just RP. So stats and things like that.
And have the parting treat of these to plant partners. Still wips but heading down the right vibe I think.

Anyways. If you have any questions, suggestions, or dreams of what this project (or the Healer’s Handbook) should have feel free to send it through.

I said I was making an herb book. Well, now its two since there is so much. But you all better enjoy this feast because I’ve been to the void and back scraping up not just herbs but also medicinal practices and I’ve gone down so many rabbit holes. Like its fun but I’m sorta just like “No one needs this lol”. That said art is stymied at the moment cause health. So we’re researching and dictating things. Look at all that progress. More progress beneath the cut but like its not art so...
Here’s my current to do list... The second column is so long I’d have to scroll down....
Tumblr media
[[Image 3] A three column list of sections to do. Column 1: How to Use This Book, Basic Tools, Plant Structure, Toxins and Antidotes, Agents and Extracts, About the Authors, Appendix A: Seasonal Availability, Appendix B: Biomes, Appendix C: Remedial Herbs, Appendix E: Canon Sources, Glossary, Index.
