I feel he holds onto the idea of cocolia being Good and Right because otherwise that would mean all that death was for nothing and that he was complicit in the wanton murder of the guards under his charge. and the fact that he isnt told the truth. that cocolia was in fact a monster. drives me INSANE. like he out of everyone in belobog deserves to know that countless people died for nothing. he needs th chance to fucking snap

idk i think insisting, when people talk about gamzees characterization through the lens of a child denied autonomy, that what was going on Wasnt mind control or coercion in preference of insisting its all about revelation of their role as their own prophet is kind of myopic. it feeds off of the assumption people are ignoring that aspect rather than saying that in a situation where the very reality of the world and circumstances gamzee was born into were constructed to assure the propagation of that self forming paradox, what is considered "autonomous" becomes very blurry, even aside from knowing LE is quite literally a stand-in for (colonial, patriarchal, etc) oppression. gamzees religious views are not an unrelated problem that form the consequence, they are a tool to ensure the progression of power and dominion. homestuck has many iterations of characters becoming aware of their own space within a narrative, and gamzees breakdown is a culmination of many things, not the least of which being that realization. with it, the knowledge that the role they are set to play as a plot device is wholly necessary for the revolution of the narrative regardless of what they may want or how it will make people see them. if there is no gamzee to ensure the validity of the alpha timeline there was simply no homestuck and they do not do not have the resources to want or care beyond that. to me if the whole takeaway of gamzees mental breakdown is solely what they say to karkat whilst attempting to get a rise out of him/beg for help in active crisis then idk.... try looking at a story beyond what the (compromised) cast say directly? or dont its your choice but! boring!

more than all of that though i think its just kind of mean. i do not value what is necessarily "objective" about a story because a story is valuable far beyond authorial intent and that goes tenfold for a story that holds a deep resentment for its audience crafted through the lens of a guy who up until like 2014 or so was profitting off of how funny open "ironic" bigotry and being mean was (and then continued to do so, just arguably more covertly). theres so much more value to me in what people who relate to a lonely child with addiction issues and a friendgroup that almost exclusively openly berated or ignored them coming into contact with the adult figure of violence and suppression have to say about all of it. idk its strange that as someone whos felt very much barred from "fandom" that i have to sit here and defend "fanon" interpretation because so many people buy into the intellectual superiority hussie sells to you like he does not resent all of you the same way he does everyone else lol

dewberries/wild blackberries (Rubus)

these are a lovely plant that pops up in forest edges and clearings, where their woody branches ramble around the ground to reach the sunlight and bloom like this every spring - they look like little galaxies :3 theyre rlly wild little plants that grow SO fast and their vines always seem to be tangled up with everything else in these places

the flowers are always attracting bees and other pollinators- i saw honeybees, mud daubers and hoverflies on these today. and when theyre pollinated they grow into lovely little berries, just like a smaller version of the blackberries you can get at a supermarket, more sour and flavorful but no less sweet. just be careful of the thorns when you pick them!! they can give u some nasty splinters if youre not- honestly so worth it tho. if you find a good spot to pick them and you freeze them after you can easily get enough for the rest of the year and still leave plenty for the birds too (also they are so good in ice cream!!!)

its pretty much impossible to identify the species bc theres so many native ones plus all the exotic species/cultivars and they all hybridize freely with each other- its so difficult to say what it is but thank goodness it doesnt matter all that much T.T every single member of their genus is delicious so dw

btw. theyre super easy to propagate around this time of year when their little shoots pop up out of the ground a couple feet away from the main plant. v convenient to divide them and add to ur garden before they get mowed or smth. just saying. they will spread so keep that in mind (its not a bad thing if they do :P)

Long story short is I'm obsessed with anything that changes its hosts behavior, not sure I could ever pick a specific favorite

Rabies is very fun! It's absolutely terrifying and can lay dormant for decades and there is no effective cure, just a slow horrible death. It's the closest thing we'll ever get to real life zombies (hopefully) and the more I learn about it the more it scares and fascinates me

Prion diseases hit the same vein of horror, though not a virus in the traditional sense. Imagine your body making one little mistake and suddenly you just. Can't sleep. Ever again. You can't sleep and so you slowly go insane with exhaustion until you die. It's so fucked up! It's also fucked up that they're contagious like chronic wasting disease in deer, they're just a misfolded protein but if you come into contact with them then they can cause YOUR proteins to start misfolding in the same way! That's fucked up!! It shouldn't work like that and I don't understand how that works but it shouldn't work like that! I'm not even sure scientists understand how it works because ive yet to find a source that explains it

But my true love is parasites! Ever since i saw a documentary or something (mightve been river monsters i dont remember) where they pulled this huge multiple feet long worm out of some kids leg ive been obsessed! Everyones heard of the fungus that highjacks an insect before making it climb up a plant before erupting out of its body, but theres just so many more facinating ones! Anyother decently well known one is that flatworm that makes snails go out in the day and swells up their eye stalks to make birds think the snail is a caterpilar so the bird eats the snail and the flatworm continues reproducing in the bird. There's a kind of isopod that eats its host fish's tounge before attaching itself in the tongues place, it eats everything the fish tries to eat until the fish starves. Even if the bug leaves the fish will die without its tounge. There's a species of wasp that injects venom into a cockroaches head that makes the cockroach completely docile so the wasp can drag it back to its little den and lay eggs in its still alive body so the young can eat it when they hatch

And that's not even to mention parasites that can infect humans! Like that worm that you can get by swimming in certian rivers that travels through your whole body just to find your eye. Could you imagine a pilgrimage so gruesome? People say they can feel it squirming around in their eyes, even see its shadows dance across their vision.

I'm much more interested in species specific ones, though less picky parasites have their own charm in their resilience. But imagine, millions of years of evolution just so you can take over somethings body, completely rewire a mouse to be attracted to cat urine so the cat eats the mouse and the parasite can propagate inside its true host the cat. What marvelous little creatures, amazing they managed to figure it out.

I will say this though: that even though I have little sympathy for terfs and terf rhetoric on account of how much real world hurt and pain it’s caused trans people, I hold a millimeter of space for young black women who latch onto that ideology. Anytime there’s a comparison to minstrelsy brought up, they have a gut reaction to whatever it’s been likened to, because of how visceral our community’s reaction is to that. Minstrelsy honestly is traumatizing for black people, particularly African-Americans to see or witness in any capacity.

So to have that experience tied to the fact that many black terfs try to fight for a womanhood we were never included in, and the constructors of that womanhood claiming that this group trans people are doing something similar to the effect of minstrelsy, something that carries so much racial trauma, it becomes clear why’d they would wanna latch onto terfism and propagate this, despite it not being the same thing at all.

Alright, the time has finally come for Hrathen to do something about Dilaf! He's going to send him to Fjorden, to deliver "a very important letter". Yeah, that's not obvious at all. And Dilaf is definitely going to try to wiggle out of it. I don't believe for a second that he secretly wanted to be sent to Fjorden.

And here comes Dilaf's counter-strike. Wait, he's been tying most of Hrathen's Arelene supporters to himself as odivs? That's… that takes careful planning. He's been quietly working to undermine Hrathen's position for weeks, effectively placing himself in a position where he can veto any order Hrathen issues. And he knows it, deliberately mocking Hrathen with pretending to be his obedient servant. I think Hrathen needs to start asking himself what, exactly, Dilaf's plans are.

So Hrathen escapes to watch Elantris. Yeah, that's where Dilaf won't go. At least that we're aware. And here's two beggars! So people do escape from the farms. There used to be four cities around Elantris? How many remain now? Only Kae? Is that port city one of the lords holds one of them? Is it important? And so Hrathen takes the opportunity to give in the name of Jaddeth. Very calculating. Or is it?

Hmmm. Kae hasn't exactly spilled out from inside Elantris, the way Hrathen thinks, has it? If there were once four cities around Elantris, Kae was never inside Elantris, right?

Oh, here's Omin, the Korathi priest. What's his errand? To sow the seeds of doubt in Hrathen's mind? Omin clearly has Hrathen's measure. Is he thinking that the deliberate falsehoods he's propagating grate on someone with his super rational outlook.

aimless musings on subgenre, citypop, and internet subcultures

theres something very interesting about watching citypop become very mainstream in korea and watching that feed back into both western listeners’ opinions and also into the sometimes-cynical efforts of a variety of kpop producers

a lot of people in the youtube/kpop sphere talk about the growth of citypop as if it were a spontaneous wave that appeared out of nowhere with mariya takeuchi’s plastic love getting picked up by the youtube algorithm in like 2018 or whatever, but thats a very like online-ignorant view of the interaction between vintage japanese music and worldwide online EDM production. citypop has been used in future funk and vaporwave for almost a decade by now, and, as a result, a number of citypop songs took off on social media here and there before plastic love’s acceleration— dress down by kaworu akimoto is one of the big examples off the top of my head, but there’s likely many many more.

“Plastic Love” by Mariya Takeuchi (1984). if you haven’t heard this yet, you’d better listen to it now. The video that first went viral was uploaded in 2017

“Selfish High Heels” by Yung Bae, Macross 82-99, and Harrison (2014) is a popular Future Funk remixes of Dress Down by Kaoru Akimoto (1986)

people who haven’t been very aesthetically literate online over the years— musically or visually, since those things are tied in subcultures— treat things like they come from nowhere. there are ongoing subcultural conversations that lead to certain aesthetic choices, and when someone tries to cash in on a trend without understanding what the trend is, that leads people to call bullshit. calling bullshit is not meanspirited, in my opinion, because it very much is like somebody who can’t speak a language getting up in front of everybody and saying “hey, i’m fluent!” and then speaking some vaguely that-language-sounding nonsense. of course people who genuinely speak that language will be outraged instinctively. it feels like being mocked.

that’s why the difference between music producers picking up on a trend cynically and music producers picking up on a trend with earnest interest in that trend’s origins feels different, even if the producers are similarly distant from the original subculture that produced that trend.

“Lady” by Yubin (2018) committed hard to the 80s JP citypop aesthetic, musically and visually, down to the sets, all fairly early in the major resurgence.

i’m sure that anyone with a passing familiarity with citypop and kpop can ascertain that not all kpop producers know what citypop is and what makes it citypop. all they know is that it is on-trend and they have to make it. not all kpop listeners know what citypop is and what makes it citypop. all they know is their idol said citypop as a buzzword in their little prepared statement. all this results in some interesting moments for me as a Music Fan, Online.

here is where i get to the thing that spurred this post: loona “did a citypop” for their japanese comeback. it doesnt sound like citypop.

“Hula Hoop (Citypop Version)” by Loona (2021). It has very odd percussion rhythms and mixing for citypop, no real attempt at a citypop verse, and strangely sparse gestures towards citypop in the form of a few seconds of bass and some synthesized orchestral embellishments that were taken from the original mix …all in spite of a very disco-inspired melody that should have worked perfectly for citypop

this is not a very big deal, and im not mad about it or anything. when a kpop act i like gets saddled with an unfortunate B-Side track i dont tend to take it very hard. however, it did raise a little bit of musical discourse in the loona fandom— in the form of remixes.

“hula hoop if it was actually a citypop song” by loonahatetwinks and Olivia Soul on youtube. this one has an original instrumental that is spot-on for contemporary k-citypop

My most favorite one of these remixes is a futurefunk remix by ZSunder, one of the very best LOONA fan producers. The fact that ZSunder thought to make a future funk remix at all speaks more to an understanding of the mutually supportive relationship between citypop and EDM genres than most kpop citypop producers or fanmixers seem to care to know about.

“Hula Hoop (Future Funk Mix)” by ZSunder is futurefunk made and mixed with such love that it has the infectious summery energy of a polished, big-name future funk hit

in the comments of this video, some people seemed to get the citypop-future funk connection and some didnt. many did get it, don’t get me wrong! but also, its not all that surprising for some kpop-focused listeners to not know much about EDM subcultures and the reasons behind various trends among producers, since kpop as an institution tends to take influences from any genre and culture it likes and then decontextualize those influences by just having their names used as buzzwords in the blurbs the idols have to recite when variety show hosts ask them about their latest single. this isn’t a criticism of the genre or the fans really, it’s just a part of the kpop industry that is used to add shine to an endless firehose-like stream of polished pop tracks. there are some issues with using whole genres and subcultures with complex histories as buzzwords, but god help us if we ever want a pop industry to give its influences their dues.

anyway, the intention behind ZSunder’s future funk Hula Hoop remix happened to remind me me of why i love Yukika’s discography so much, especially the Soul Lady album. I’ve seen some reviews online baffled by parts of Soul Lady, because the album in general is an exploration of that relationship between citypop and modern/internet EDM. i’ve seen plenty of Soul Lady reviews especially baffled by pit-a-pet, saying something along the lines of “what’s with the modern-sounding dance track in the middle of a retro album?”, but i think that pit-a-pet is a futurefunk-inspired track, at least in the chorus. considering both that and the Chill Lo-Fi Interludes, it seems like estimate’s team put together Soul Lady for Yukika in a way that shows that they love citypop and understand the online-specific electronic music subcultures that led to citypop’s resurgence.

“pit-a-pet” by Yukika (2020). the stacatto, bass heavy chorus is futurefunk enough, but the soaring orchestral part in the final chorus seals the deal for my interpretation.

“All Flights Are Delayed (1 hour version)” by Yukika (2020). Estimate literally released an hour-long youtube mix of one of the Lo-Fi interludes on Soul Lady as part of their promotion, clearly inspired by “Lo-Fi anime beats to chill out to,” which is another example of online producers from around the world using Japanese samples as a focal point of their music

Estimate, in the end, is still a Kpop production company, just the same as BBC, so they have no inherent claim over citypop, but the way that their exploration of subgenres clearly comes from passion and interest on the part of their production staff makes it so that their work with Yukika rings true. on the other hand, i really appreciate Ryan S. Jhun’s work on LOONA’s JP comeback, as well as on Not Friends, but the citypop mix thing was so clearly an afterthought to the point where fans of Loona who like citypop seem mostly just irritated by the cynical-seeming attempt.

heres one last good modern kpop citypop MV that has nods to the internet culture that led to its revival in the form of the videography— vaporwave, future funk, lofi, and other internet genres along those lines tend to have videos consisting of looping anime and vhs clips. future funk in particular is known for this, especially since a lot of future funk music, esp early future funk, is just loops of very short, catchy segments of citypop and disco songs. it’s all about the loops

“My Type” by Yoon JongShin ft. Miyu Takeuchi (2019). This song is so dedicated to the retro JP citypop sound that it’s almost beyond my personal taste. The singer, Miyu, was a headlining act at a seoul citypop festival and sang this song as part of her act (:

this video of “Only One” by Conscious Thoughts (2015) has a looped clip as an example for comparison with My Type. it also has a pulsing sidechain compressor working in time with its drum beat in a way that is common for future funk and that i think is a good example for my pit-a-pet yukika comparison to future funk

i guess the takeaway here is that media is more and more online, and the creation and propagation of digital audio and video content has been in the hands of literally almost anybody who wants to do it for the past two decades thanks to garage band and fruityloops and audacity and tiktok and youtube and bandcamp and soundcloud and myspace and newgrounds and p2p file sharing and so on and so forth. and therefore like… as with all things, the consumer class more and more is also the creator class, and therefore every member of an audio-visual subculture will have the ability to discern what is and isnt made with knowledge of the audio-visual language of that subculture

i was thinking something similar myself! and i’m not biased just because i’m in the medical field i promise 

but i also like the thought of her getting into like, botany and agricultural science. so much of her childhood was spent dealing with death and danger, i think she’d do really well in a setting that involves cultivating life without the risk of accidentally hurting someone (which is something she spent a lot of her life worrying about, even with aizawa’s training and her own quirk proficiency). 

i could see her owning her own greenhouse, growing endangered plants or finding ways to utilise her quirk in food production. reversing a field of potatoes who were infected with a fungus to a state before the infection so the farmer can take preventative measures? rewinding a crop of apples that were ruined by a sudden storm? bringing a rare, dying plant back to its prime so it can continue to propagate its species? theres so many applications for her quirk to do good!

i’m just really attached to eri’s future having nothing to do with heroics, not after everything she seen growing up. aizawa and hizashi would wholeheartedly encourage and support her

We deal with this, “fiction is reality” shit EVERY. GENERATION.

And I mean it comes back among authoritarians playing to sheep EVERY fucking generation on different pretenses.

It always boils down to a bunch of people that are insecure about the effects of culture and media on other people, and as a flimsy pretense/pretext to restrict access to things to other people “in society” for their own safety and sense of security.

And when it comes to, “obscene literature” or illustrations, the source is always jealousy, insecurity and an attempt to reduce other people down to a demographic statistic. Whether it’s reducing black people to a caricature and acting like hip-hop just turns the kids into violent, drug abusing, psychotic felons, or imagining pornography is what turns people into horny fucking do-nothings, it’s always about control.

And we’ve put it off for so long. We’ve put off the conversation about just what demographic these people play to in order to get traction and followers and staying power and warm bodies for their movements. They’re the demographic that makes antis- work, the demographic that screams for censorship because illustrations “hurt them personally,” or “cause men to hurt them.”

I’m talking about women. Particularly, cis women, as trans women are not in numbers enough to affect anything, and it is EXPLICITLY IMPORTANT that the source of the offense and complaint come from the population that are the gateway through which the next generation is born and brought up.

Individual men may be so clueless as to assume the way degeneration works is a person is left improperly or negligently nurtured, and so just make bad decisions because, “they were never taught better.” They embrace the idea that people only do bad shit because, “the society,” isn’t paying attention, or that individual people are just blank slates beholden to the righteousness and morality of the cultural hivemind of said society. That Society is an objective effect, and if bad people exist, it’s proof to them that there’s something wrong with said society.

But individual men know that the bad actions of other men are not caused solely by “male culture,” or the absence of it, or shitty “role models.” They see the shitty natural inborn attitudes of other men, and despite being raised in shitty conditions, naturally develop a good head on their shoulders, and despise actions like that. As men you can’t HELP but grow up watching boys around you make shitty decisions based on shitty impulse control and, no matter how often they’re punished, how much they’re loved, how much they’re compassionately talked to, STILL act the fool and wind up as terrible, stealing, violent adults. As men you can’t do anything BUT reconcile that some people are just fucking shitheads, and the idea as a man YOU should be punished or treated like the “association” of men itself is at fault, smacks of sexism. The same sort of sexism women’s lib supposedly is against- at least, when it happens to women.

Women, however, are not men, are not privy to the thoughts and feelings of men. Men are abstracts to these women, many of whom are so solipsistic or gynocentrist that they just see men as a class of monsters in a videogame. Just a pattern of individuals that surely must all get their code and culture from “society.” Clearly, when there’s bad men about, it’s proof this “society” isn’t doing everything it can to mollify and gentrify those horrible beastly men to make them safe and not dangerous and productive.

These women that see men like living aggregates for society, imagine that in order to “keep men working properly,” they need to not have “bad moral influences,” treating pornography and access to drugs and literature like a cleaning lady treats dirt on linen. They imagine that the only reason rape or murder or theft by men occurs is because “there’s a problem with men, thinking that is okay.” Like the only reason your average man isn’t running around violently raping people or killing them is because they sang enough hymns at church- by force. Or because they were prevented from, “getting deranged by wrongthink.”

So with this in mind, how do they imagine porn affects men, male minds, and this big abstract-turned-monolithic-concept called, “society?”

Well, they imagine fiction is reality. That if “people of lesser intellect” read a thing, then they’ll inherently believe it, because, “it presents itself as factual and reality.” When.. no. That’s not how it works. Therefore, they conclude, fiction that does not preach their “good values” is in fact advocating bad ones, bad habits, bad moral character, bad mental health- call it whatever you want based on your generation. It’s ALL THE SAME SHIT. All the same knee-jerk moralism based on justifying societal and institutional use of force to restrict and arbitrate and judiciously enforce and justify dictating censorship and good-think. It’s just a question of where that basis comes from.

And theres’ ultimately no reasoning with that culture of women when they grasp hold of a thing that appeals to them, flatters and justifies their prejudices and biases. You can sit there colorfully or dryly explaining the ways in which this shitty point of view is wrong, much as you can try to walk back a persons beliefs in their homophobia that they base on religious purism or use the purism to validate their homophobia, but you cannot just get them individually to give up those nice, comfortable beliefs.

And when grouped together for mutual support and validation, it becomes this negative-thought, field of fucking SHEEP braying “Nuuuh-uuuh!” and arguing for restriction of content and sanitation and disbarrment from certain subject matter to be in consumable porn or literature or even just art. The only thing keeping them in check being the consequences for vandalism, and the ability for a community or institution to police out the bias usurpers that would seek to enter their foundations and run them on behalf of the values of these easily upset, insecure sheep.

And while you can remove a man and his influences on the next gen from the home, from the social radius of the next generation to be a significant source of culture and how they relate to young people, removing women from the equation, from whom the next generation comes from, is virtually impossible. So a male zealot, already susceptible to scrutiny and punishment for being so wild and zealous with their beliefs, can be retaliated against, muted, beaten and removed from relevance until they censor themselves or change their tune.

But you cannot do that to a female human, or women/mothers as a sex, without both women AND men taking it as an attack on humanity at their most prime and kernel. It has to be done with disproportionate authoritarian state power that does not fear mass dissent and violent retaliation, or it isn’t done at all.

So these zealous Karens that embrace wholly these ideas enabling authoritarianism under a banner they approve of, are allowed to propagate unchallenged, and even if challenged, cannot be subdued or subverted. Their own little cliques and echo chambers and lack of desire to even consider their positions are wrong. Any attempt to point the fingers at this very real, disproportionate and characteristic, objective power female humans have just on the basis of their sex and how that relates among them socially, can and will be trash binned arbitrarily as, “sexism.” Despite the fact, it’s absolutely true.

So long as women that believe “society” is an objective, monolithic thing from which, “that other sex” and other women get their marching orders on how to BE what they are, and don’t see them as billions of individuals with their own ambitions, instincts, inborn personality and character flaws, independent of “society’s failures,” believing those people can be saved or corrected IF ONLY WE CENSOR EVERYTHING or make all media “good thing,” we’re just going to have people with illiberal beliefs asserting their dominance and insisting it’s for the soul of the species, society and the planet.

I mean yeah there are male antis and shit, but honestly. Tell me honestly. i want to be respectful of philosophy and those who study it but dear god have i seen some insanely stupid shit taking philosophy classes. i think the main thing i dont like is how it floats around reality. like we had to read this story about a utopian society that only exists because one child is left in destitution and its presented as a critique of utilitarianism and the way my professor and some of the students were treating it was that kind of middle ground defeatism that people who dont suffer horribly can afford to adopt. firstly these hypotheticals are 95% of the time purely for fun and games. there is no reason Omelas needs to be used as an example when we live on the suffering of hundreds of millions literally today and we have for a very long time. it just trivializes the entire thing. the core question is perfectly fine, should the few suffer so that the many prosper? okay yeah fine lets answer that but FORCING the adoption of the thoughts of 18th and 19th century writers onto the situation literally only draws away from the discussion. i think the biggest problem i have with it is that its SO close to being a very very important field for educating people but its like economics where some motherfuckers have just stormed up their own internal logic and have run amok. i dont like the machiavellian qualities of dismissing a field of study because it doesnt dawn the accessories and makings of natural sciences but they are going way too far. theres a responsibility of educators to actually think about what theyre teaching and propagating and how it can, should, and is affecting the world and i just KNOW philosophy classes are churning out more people who amazingly take the class and come out with the inability to think critically while parroting others than it is enlightened scholars who can independently think and make decisions based on reason or whatever. gay class.
