How to give good feedback on art (from an artist)

I often see people talk about how they want to leave good comments on art, but don’t know how/don’t know what to say. As an artist, here’s what I often look for to have something to say to other people!

The composition of the art – how different elements of the piece guide your eye, how certain parts are brighter against darker backdrop/darker against a bright backdrop. What catches your attention? How have they put the piece together to make this happen?

The lighting/shading – how have they rendered the piece? Do you like how the lighting is bright, harsh lines, or how it’s gently blended in? Do the shadows add extra depth that makes the whole piece look more 3D? Did they use funky, unconventional colours to shade?

The lineart – is it smooth? Sketchy? Are the lines thick or thin? Do they use lines at all? Are they in a colour other than black? How does it add to the piece? Do they just outline a piece, or add texture with lineart as well?

The colours – have they used a pallet of complimentary colours? Do they remind you of something specific – perhaps to the fandom, or to a season, an aesthetic, etc? Do they only use one colour? Do they use unconventional colours? Do they have one pop of contrasting colours against a monochrome background?

The anatomy – do they stick to exact proportions? Do they lean towards a more cartoon sizing? Is it like Powerpuff Girls, or like Tim Burton? 90s anime, or modern day anime? Do they make things very angular, or really smooth? What about it do you like specifically?

The texture – in the frame of digital art especially, have they used a specific brush to create a certain effect? Do you like how sketchy it all looks, or how they’ve blended the colours together? Does it look like watercolours bleeding, or a stamp/print made over the entire piece? Is it all rough, or super smooth?

The details – talk about how you love the tiny pattern on a blanket, or the multiple earrings in the characters ear. Talk about how you like how they’ve done the hair, or the little glint of light against a ring. Talk about the celtic patterns in the body, or the crooked teeth in their smile. Little things that jump out to you.

How it makes you feel – anything at all, but try to explain what in the piece evokes it strongest. Are you hit with isolation by the lonely figure in a wind-swept hill? Or joy, does that bright smile make your heart swell? Try and pick something out and babble about that.

Any meaning you can pick out – a little more tricky and often quite personal, but if you can pick something out that you think you can interpret, talk about it! I don’t think people ever get offended, even if you’re wrong – it’s interesting to see how other peoples brains work, and what they take away from something you’ve made.

Anything that stands out to you as a signature of Their Art – typically for artists you’ve followed for a long time – when you look at a piece, do you think ‘oh, this is by X’. How do you know? Is it how they draw the mouths? How they shade? The anatomy? The details? The colours? The composition? The expressions? Tell them!

I try to mix and match a few of these, focusing on things specific to the piece. Talking in depth about a piece helps an artist to know you haven’t just glanced it over and gone ‘oo cool!’ and moved on. If you want Tumblr to continue having a thriving art community, it’s beneficial to engage in and spread art around, as well as letting the artist know their work was seen and appreciated. They put the work out there for you to see for free! What can take you a few minutes of your day can make their entire week. Go support your artist friends!

Me nervously rambling about other internet stranger’s mugen ocs and my conflict of having a crush on them but not wanting to self ship with them cause I don’t want to make the creators uncomfortable.

I don’t know if I should make ocs based on/inspired by other people’s m.u.g.e.n. ocs, only because a) that’s an internet stranger’s baby that THEY made. and b). I don’t want them to be uncomfortable with me self shipping with said oc they made.

It should be noted that the m.u.g.e.n. Community is kinda notorious for character edits becoming their ocs and then people make edits upon that edit for whatever reason. Like. There isn’t just one Element Iori, there are multiple Element Ioris.

They are also understandably protective of their ocs (who isnt?), and turning said existing oc into something they’re not may end up rubbing people the wrong way.

The only downside here is c) that my feelings towards the actual ocs I end up creating (that are based on the existing ones) may not be as strong enough to maintain over a vast period of time. And would thus lose energy to create anything featuring the actual new ocs I make.

EDIT: I could… do both. I can still have a crush on an internet stranger’s mugen oc/s and just romantically pine for them from a distance, while also making my own ocs that just use the existing mugen ocs as inspirations (be it in behaviour, personality, aesthetic cues etc) and just self ship with the ocs I end up creating just to be safe. I feel that’s the best course of action in a weird way.

The only drawback is that… I’ll have to make designs for the ocs… And I’ll need to flesh them out…. And so on and so forth.. shshhshs. Which I am up to the task. Just that. It may take time. But I think it’s workable without making creators super uncomfortable.

Bellemere was a great teacher. but. yknow.

Nami learned most of what she knows from waterbending books and scrolls that she stole over the years from other pirates and rich people. And she's learned a lot compared to the other strawhats.

To keep this brief-ish, she's practically a master at waterbending, save for healing. For the life of her, she couldn't really get the hang of it and none of the scrolls or books she had picked up over the years were at all helpful in explaining it. She's still working on it.

The unfortunate part of this is, while she has great control and precision over her bending, her power is... lacking. Which is where the 'practically a master' vs. 'an actual master' distinction becomes important lol

Due to amazing forethought, Nami is perceived by the outside world as a non-bender. Even some of her enemies think she's a non-bender. Nami really doesn't want people to know how good she is at waterbending because that would make her more of a threat and her pretty little heart wouldn't be able to take it if her bounty increased, Robin, so could you do her a big favour-

Usopp

the only firebender in Syrup Village. Yasopp is a known pirate and firebender.

Usopp never had a firebending teacher. He did, however, have ample amounts of earth and water benders to watch from afar. He taught himself bending, in a way that works for him. It is far from traditional firebending, but hey it works.

Somewhere along the line- maybe around Loguetown or after- he learns that firebenders really can shoot lightning and it wasn't just a myth. He blows himself up a lot trying to create it on his own before some lady on an island they stop at explains the right way to do it and demonstrates. Usopp still blows himself up, but now his form is correct.

While the other strawhats tend to weave their bending into their fighting styles somehow- or at least use it to aid them in battle from time to time, like with a boost into the air via rock- Usopp never uses his bending in a fight. He likes his bending and all, but he's the sniper and he has a bag of explosives on him so uh. No.

one day, post-Wano, Usopp has a really good day before bending practice and accidentally discovers his ability to combustion bend. He doesn't know it's combustion bending though, because all that comes out are little sparks of fire, like a sparkler. No one else knows either and he just uses it as a party trick.

Sanji

all of the Vinsmokes are earthbenders. Sora is not. Sanji is.

After escaping onto the Orbit, Sanji decided the best way to never be found again would be to never bend again. Ever. (also because those 3 bastards and Judge were earthbenders and Sanji hated them)

He had an earthbending teacher, but anything that wasn't a superhuman feat was deemed a failure so Sanji never actually learned shit from that teacher. He also just wanted to cook all the time, so he never practiced.

Point is, when he's stuck on that rock with Zeff, he has the power and control to lift a rock, but nothing heavier than something he could physically carry himself.

Zeff is a non-bender. While the Baratie has it's fair share of benders, Sanji is Zeff's son and when Zeff offered to teach him how to fight one day, what was Sanji to do other than accept?

Sanji never told Zeff he was an earthbender, but he had a feeling Zeff knew anyway.

Sanji never told his crew he was an earthbender either. This was less of him actively hiding it and more out of habit. He loved them, but he didn't really see a need to explain it to them when it didn't matter. He wouldn't see his 'family' again and he could fight just fine without it anyway-

He reveals he's an earthbender post-WCI. Zoro forces him to learn the basics and also adamantly insists that he knew the truth the whole time (he didn't. he's embarrassed). Zoro starts saying some super smug stuff now, like "is that any way to talk to your teacher?" and related lines. Think Zoro's thing about ranking and always insisting he's above Sanji and now that he's got the opportunity, he's gonna enjoy every moment.

(He's also gonna have some kind of earthbending specialty, but I haven't decided yet. Leaning towards metalbender though.)

Sanji faces the firebender rumours instead of Usopp. Both of them are incensed by this bc Sanji wants people to think he's a non-bender still (connection to Zeff) and Usopp is just mad people don't think he's a firebender (quite literally his own fault).

Chopper

always thought bending was cool even if he couldn't do it

Doctor Hiriluk was a non-bender too. Sometimes the two of them would talk and make up impossible scenarios that benders might do and laugh their heads off.

Doctor Kureha is an earth bender. She isn't a metalbender, but everyone besides Chopper thinks she is.

Robin

she comes from a long line of waterbenders, but she and her mother were both non-benders.

The scholars on Ohara were benders of all types and specialties. Fire, Earth, Water, Air all living in harmony and all that. Real shame. Anyway.

Because of Nami's "i'm totally a non-bender teehee" scheme, Robin has become the "strawhat's waterbending witch" that some people spread rumours about. The gist is that Nami begged her to help and Robin thought it'd be fun. Misleading people with her ability and those rumours never gets old.

Franky

non-bender in a family of 1) a fishman, 2) a mermaid, and 3) Iceburg (annoying waterbender his age)

Water 7 is known for a majority of their people being waterbenders. The Franky Family is mostly made up of non-water benders.

Franky didn't really care about figuring out bending as much when he was younger and after the Sea Train incident and he built himself back up, he couldn't bend a thing. He doesn't really know if he just fucked himself up hard enough he couldn't bend anymore or if he never could bend in the first place. He doesn't really care though, too busy being Super!

A lot of outsiders think Franky is an earthbender, specifically a metalbender, because of his whole cyborg thing. Also the no shoes thing. After joining the strawhats, the metalbender thing sort of holds up, especially post-timeskip with his General Franky.

There are also groups of people who are like "this guy is from Water 7, are you kidding? he's a waterbender for sure." They also point to the fact that he's always wearing a speedo and thus always ready to get wet.

The rumours are pretty funny to listen to and he and Robin love to just hang out on an island incognito (or as much as Franky is capable) and just listen to rumours about themselves and laugh about it. They share what they hear with the crew too.

Brook

he doesn't use his bending often, but there are occasions; can do loads of funny little tricks that he taught himself during That Time. He's also quite good at propelling his body high into the air for surveillance.

Not exactly a master airbender, but does have the basics down, like Zoro. There are attempts to mimic Sanji's Sky Walk- more for entertainment and curiousity than anything- with varying levels of success (Brook kicks himself too high, doesn't kick at the right time, etc)

Learned about 'gliding suits' (created after he died) and refuses to ever wear one. Adamant that if he must wear traditional airbending clothing, it's flowy stuff or nothing. (he's shy about form fitting clothing being too close to the skin. well, not that he has any-)

Jinbei

literally the exact same. Fishmen can do all the same things in canon, but they cannot be benders. Reason being: every single one of them is uhh, hmm. best way to say this is waterbenders, but to the left.

Fishmen can manipulate water with their hands but only if they're touching the element itself; they can't turn it to ice or anything like that, but the tradeoff is the immense amount of power and precise control they can more easily learn than humans... or smth like that

honestly, Jinbei's just here to chill in this au and probably unintentionally give Luffy bad waterbending advice (it's advice for Fishman Karate which isn't the same, but it's pretty close right? And Luffy keeps asking and insisting he teach him, and well, who is Jinbei to say no? Surely, Franky, who came to watch, will tell him if he's giving the wrong idea-)

Nami yells at both of them. Then yells at Franky because of his waterbender conspiracy theorists.

fic writing seems like so much fun. do you have any tips for getting into it and/or developing your writing skills in general?

honestly? i will just recommend starting. write anything that comes to mind, little interactions or even just transcribing canon stuff!

i started writing fic because i have a daydreaming Problem and wanted to share what i come up with with people, so the ideas were already there.

but! with really developing your skills it's writing consistently and reading a bunch that can help with that. i read so much and kind of take mental notes of the things i enjoy other writers doing, whether it's the way they structure things, or even just something like how they write a specific character's speech.

don't be afraid to write things that you think are bad, because starting is the hardest part.

also, if you have trouble finding an original idea, don't be afraid to write something derivative of somebody else's work! just ask if the person minds before posting it & credit appropriately. but, that's a good place to start if the setup for a concept gives you trouble. one of the things that really got me started was a project wholly inspired by somebody else's work.

(a personal recommendation: start with smaller things, oneshots & connected oneshots rather than a bit multichapter project, it can be a bit crushing to realize you can't execute something how you want to at the start. but, plan it anyways. write down the idea anyways, just know that it might not turn out right away. also: if you start posting stuff on ao3, i recommend hiding stuff like kudos, hits, and comment numbers, it helps make it a more positive and less number-driven experience <3 i can share the siteskin i use for it if you want!)

🌪️ TORNADO - what is the biggest change you've ever made to them? how have they changed from their original version?

Ooooh this was really challenging because I had to go back and think about what the earliest versions of them were like. From what I can remember:

Wen likes Alistair a lot more than she used to. She was much meaner to him in my early drafts. Their bond developed slowly, but I am so glad it did--I think their friendship is really important to her character development (as is her friendship with Morrigan, tbh, though I don't think I've posted about it as much here). But initially her dislike of Alistair was deeply tied to the trauma of her wedding--and because she'd already killed everyone involved, he was an easy target for her anger. But I ultimately feel like...idk he is just such a sad puppy of a man in the beginning of the game that she couldn't help but feel some sense of kinship. And I mean---her dog likes him, how bad could he really be?

Maria was a lot less...Well! Maria was in the periphery of both Your Fate For Mine and Wander, and while I don't think she is a dramatically different character in either I do think her voice is a lot more distinctive now than it was initially. She's funny, but I think the humor is a lot more performative than it was initially (which is not to say that none of it is genuine--only that more of it is a front than I gave her credit for at first). (I would write her part in Your Fate dramatically different now, especially having written her "in case I die" letters, but that is a totally different question).

Emma has stayed mostly the same, but I think I let her be funnier in Wander than I do when I write her now. But then she has been through some shit since then, so--maybe it's just natural character development. I've leaned into the researcher/scientist bit though, I think.

Salshira: The original concept for Salshira was "someone who would despise the idea of having a soulmate," and I think--given that most of what I write for her is after all that---she is a lot more mellow now than she used to be. Feels like she has to put up less of a front for sure.

Elowen: Well! I am sure she's changed the most, but I would have to write her fic again to know how and it is so long. I think she is sadder and wetter than she used to be, but she also sacrificed herself in the Fade because she felt guilty about the death of the Divine. So. Maybe she hasn't changed all that much after all.

🌈 RAINBOW - what advice would they give to their younger self?

Wen: You cannot bend your head so low that anyone will forget it still belongs to you. Never, ever stop fighting. None of them deserve your compliance.

Maria: Love the world around you as intensely as you can. You never know what you will miss once it's gone.

Elowen: Tell them you will not, under any circumstances, be the First. You are too young to carry the clan on your shoulders. Be a child while you can still be a child.

Salshira: You deserve to live just as you are now. There is nothing wrong with you. Nothing.

Emmaera: Don't let Papae go into the ruins alone. Under no circumstances can he touch the mirror.

I'm writing a story with a Black trans man mc, I want to subvert the "angry, aggressive Black man" trope so he's fairly shy and awkward but becomes more confident as the story progresses. However, I'm worried this falls into a trope of trans men being weak or "girly". Any tips on still being able to subvert the first trope without falling into the second one?

It's been an interesting morning so far. I may have ruined a 12 year long friendship by having to be brutally honest about something because I couldn't keep quiet any longer and let a friend ruin her life further. If it happens, it happens. I gave her some recommendations and we'll see if she listens. But also, the elusive Loki cat followed me around all morning demanding love and attention and even let my pick her up and hold her, which made me feel special.

#hopefully our friendship will be okay but if it's not then that's fine #I've tried for years to help her and give her advice only when she specifically asks for it #and i love that she cares so much that she wants to help everyone but going bankrupt for it is not good #i couldn't keep quiet about that #i watched my mom file for bankruptcy and all the shit that came with it and o don't want to see that happen to her #the loki snuggles were nice though and hopefully she'll let me snuggle her again #i think she's the only cat who wholeheartedly likes the changes I've been making #there's something neurologically wrong with loki that I've never been able to get figured out because of the cost #she periodically seems to forget who we are and goes into hiding over it #but she's happy and healthy otherwise and she's got a good life of free food and cushy beds for as long as she'll be around #petting her is a bonus when she'll allow it #for now I'm just going to try not to stress about my friend and just relax today #make some tea and watch bake off and crochet #I'm still feeling very off and wrong and might try to sleep again in a bit

It’s 11pm but does anyone have any life advice for what to do when your abusive/neglectful parents are trying to force you into getting a job at their office just because they make a ton of money and don’t want the business to go into the hands of your older brother but you don’t personally care and literally just turned 18 and haven’t even started college yet

My PC crashed while I was playing The Sims 3 and it turns out I have mega RAM issues (not sure if caused by that stupidly unoptimised game (would be very on brand) or something else I didn't notice because I have four 16GB sticks and haven't done any resource-intense work with the PC in a while) and I'm currently trying to figure out what's wrong, how it happened, how I can fix it and how I can prevent it happening again.

Shout out to EVERY article telling me to test my RAM sticks in another PC, like I just HAVE ONE hanging around. To be fair, I am a massive hoarder and have many old devices but surely the POINT of having a PC is that you just replace components? Who HOARDS PCs? Whoever they are, I guess I need to get on their level.

And NO I am absolutely NOT going to hit up my few local friends who have PCs and ask them to dismantle their work tools so I can shove in my possibly fucked up components and see if anything explodes (exaggeration, obviously, but still).

#hi I’m going to complain for a quick second #so my parents have not contributed a fucking cent to my higher edumacation besides maybe three train tickets #I have paid two semesters so far by my self and with my grandmother giving me some money to help for transportation but that’s legit it #like my parents haven’t financially helped me at all okay #so my dad was going to do taxes today and he told me to print out the college tax thing and I got angry at him #because fuck you use me as a discount when you start to actually help me out at all #so we’re yelling at each other and he’s like oh isn’t there a parent account I can log into and I explain that no it’s fucking college #you do not have a day at all #he does not like this because he really likes being in control of shit #but it’s funny because for the first 16 years of my life he couldn’t give a shit less about my education last two years of HS he tries #to give unhelpful advice that just led to more stress (as in I got a 90 on a test and he’d ask why it wasn’t 100) #so we’re yelling at each other and my sister says to just ignore it because someone might aswell clame it for taxes instead of the state #and yeah sure fine but at least provide some support for me. or fucking tell me you’re proud of me that’s it that’s all I want #the only thing he has given me for school was a fucking BC tee shirt off of Amazon… that’s it #so now we are just fucking avoiding each other and it’s fucking awkward but my mom is treating it like I’m the bad guy here because #I’m angry they told me I had to go to college and now they won’t help me #like I understand that a lot of people don’t have their parents support to pay for college and they do drive me to the train station but #it’s just rude. and I can’t even talk to him about it because oh no big man feelings get hurt when $ is a topic but like grow the fuck up
