Random Thought #34: If Madam Yu really had cut off Wei Wuxian's sword hand in order to appease Wang Lingjiao before the Jiang Clan was wiped out, then Jiang Cheng truly and honestly would have been fucked cause no way in hell would Wei Wuxian give up his core after that. He was already thinking of his hand in terms of debt ("if it's in exchange for the peace of the sect..." —exr), and to take away his sword hand is to cripple his ability to cultivate, which he considers a debt he owes to the Jiang for teaching him, to begin with. The scores would have been cleared, then, so any other ask (like, say, protecting the only surviving heir with his life) would be considered extraneous. Wei Wuxian would still do it because it was the right thing to do at the time with the knowledge that he had, but once Jiang Cheng lost his core? That's a wrap!

As a fellow Dovewing lover, it's frustrating how the fandom watered her down into a whiny brat who never cared about Ivypool. I mean, seriously? Not only did Dovewing care about her sister (reacting in horror when Lionblaze, her own mentor and Jayfeather are willing to potentially sacrifice Ivypool's safety by employing her as her spy instead of trying to get her out of the Dark Forest's clutches, hiding a thorn in her nest to cover for her scarring from her training).
Heck, even the scene where she tries to feed Ivypool her catch during a hunting patrol was demonized because 'she was trying to make Ivypool break the code like SHE does, as if it doesn't matter' and because she got upset when Ivypool started arguing with her! But you guys said she didn't care, right? Plus, people act like being forced into a prophecy is something you should be grateful for, as if it didn't irreparably change her close relationship with her sister? As if Lionblaze and Jayfeather didn't still keep her out of the loop (and for all the fussing they made about keeping it a secret, Lionblaze confesses his power to Cinderheart and Jayfeather doesn't even care).
Meanwhile Nightheart is angry he isn't orange and hates his mom for being exiled and the whole world has to stop for him. 🤪 And Bramblestar is simply so tortured by having an evil father, the only choice is to train with him and his evil half-brother and hide this from his wife! (But remember, it's bad when that witch Squirrelflight hides the parentage of the three from him, even when Blackstar and Leopardstar were still around after being complicit in the torture and killing of halfclan cats.) Why are these male characters sympathized with, even when they actively harm people (Nightheart forcing himself into Sunbeam's life by lying to everyone about being her mate without even asking her if she would be fine with that beforehand), Bramblestar (we all know what he does), but when Dovewing or any other female character is upset, people freak out and call them whiny brats or abusive for (checks notes) asking her partner if he loves her anymore after they argued multiple times in a book. Really makes you think! (Sorry this is so long, you just have based opinions!)
dovewing being characterized as this flighty airheaded vain popular girl stereotype in fanon is like. one of those biggest "we didnt actually read the books" things in the fandom. like theres so much fanart where shes grinning and giggling over the prophecy and shes besties with the trio and shes got preferential treatment, and then in the actual books shes basically the autistic kid no one actually likes. people really, REALLY overexaggerate that one scene where she snaps at ivypaw and brags. (and i dont wanna shit on amvs but i am forever side eying how the animation community handled dove back in the day. more than one person animated her getting murdered. normal.)
i do think its gotten better recently at least. but wow does it feel like at least one person on the writing team has a bone to pick
(also awww thank you <3 no need to be sorry i love getting stuff in my inbox)

controversial(?) opinion: Remus isn't intrusive thoughts. Logan gives an extremely specifically worded answer saying:
"The Duke is like Roman's twin, the embodiment of 'bad imagination'. Which is primarily experienced by you via intrusive thoughts."
Not "he is 'bad imagination' and intrusive thoughts." but "he is 'bad imagination' and you experience him as intrusive thoughts" which is very notable when other characters have it explicitly stated that they ARE other things. Roman is creativity, romance, and the ego, he is all of them, he doesn't cause the other things; he IS them.
Thomas is only hurt by intrusive thoughts because he believes the thoughts he has makes him a bad person. Like Remus explicitly stated that the reason Thomas finds him scary is because of Virgil, which yeah, intrusive thoughts in real life are caused by anxiety. Patton and Virgil are said to be the real ones at fault for making Thomas feel guilty and anxious. Perhaps Remus is causing them maliciously in universe, in attempts to get attention or revenge for being suppressed or whatever, but Logan's explanation is written in such a careful way that to me, it makes it clear (to me, at least) that he is not literally intrusive thoughts, he is just any idea Thomas thinks is taboo.
Due to character arcs, he's probably gonna get accepted. And he probably isn't going to just be accepted (which that part would be good, intrusive thoughts have to be accepted as Just Thoughts) but is also probably going to be a good guy like Virgil. Which it would be bad if intrusive thoughts were glorified like that. Good thing he's not intrusive thoughts.

a thing about Wen Qing that I think has gone underappreciated this tournament is that even real-life, non-magical acupuncturists can fuck up your entire shit if they put (or don't put!) the needles in the proper points at the proper depths and angles
(also she definitely did effective musical cultivation from a distance that one time in CQL during the Yin Iron fetch quest after they all left Cloud Recesses)
A THING TO KEEP IN MIND FOR HYPOTHETICAL FUTURE ROUNDS PERHAPS

truly nothing on this earth is more foul than supernatural familial abuse discourse but specifically the discourse people have about if sam or dean "had it worse" like ok cool you have already missed the point of this show very hard.

butters has cute moments occasionally he’s interesting occasionally he says things that i like occasionally but something about so many people in this fandom hailing his blue eyed blonde haired naïveté as “purity” when butters is a racist misogynistic asshole in part due to this naïveté feels dark sided like i feel like an insane person for thinking somehow some way the fandom portrayal of butters being so (and i mean this) delusional perpetuates some form of bigotry like i dont know how but it does

i feel like the thing about canon vs fanon for comic books. is that there are parts of both that absolutely suck shit. and nobody agrees on which parts are which. and like a billion different people have been responsible for all the stuff that happens in canon anyway so there's tons of conflicting ideas and understandings and intentions represented. and half the time the publishers themselves will just be like "actually that was stupid forget i said that, we're starting over." so basically just do whatever the fuck.

I see why people want jc to be all protective of wwx and worry about him being trapped in CR but nothing in canon rly points to that imo. by the end of the series I think he's painfully aware just how much more wwx wants to be with lwj than with him, and his dislike of lwj and of their relationship has always been more about jealousy and insecurity and abandonment issues (and in the novel, straight-up homophobia) rather than wanting to defend wwx from someone who might hurt him. so when authors make jc aggressive towards lwj or wwx for those reasons and then try to claim that's why and he's *really* just worried it comes out of nowhere and makes no sense and should baffle the characters as much as it baffles the readers. like if he's worried about THAT he's going to have to say it like a grown-up

Ok sorry i have to ask another one now. Thought on regulus, canon vs the current widespread fanon version?
hehehe u don’t need to apologize at all!! these r super fun 🙈
hmmm i think it would be disingenuous to say anything other than i don’t actually have a lot of thoughts about him. in canon, i never really focused on him beyond the little screen time he occupied. there was nothing about him that made me particularly like/dislike him. he’s a blank slate, pretty much. i remember being v amused at harry thinking he’s a less attractive version of sirius lol
fanon, though…..that one’s a landmine that’s completely ruined my impression bc of how he’s characterised. it’s not that he has a personality manufactured from scratch (that’s a necessity) but that so much of it is just sirius’ traits given to him while undermining s at the same time? and also idk where/how it evolved but being sympathetic towards regulus while completely shitting on sirius??? so much talk about him ‘abandoning’ regulus or being a bad brother or being an asshole to him and it’s touted as fact and i’m just like,,,,how,,,,where did it come from,,, (or saying reg was in an abusive family situation but not giving the same grace to sirius?)
i also don’t like how his agency is completely minimised by acting like he didn’t happily become a death eater. just. idk. he has the capacity to be an interesting character right? but i’ve rarely seen him that way. i think a couple time travel fics, maybe? but it’s really hard to find a reg-sirius dynamic that works for me along with a characterisation of him that isn’t like,,,grating ykno?
i think my ideal regulus characterisation would be like—a snobby elitist dude who genuinely thinks he’s above everyone (similar to sirius but more biologically essentialist than him); he’s actually super close w sirius and idt it’s realistic but i like to imagine they kept meeting in secret and didn’t let their bond falter at all during hogwarts; super jealous of james but ultimately tries to atleast tolerate him bc he knows how important he is to sirius; happily drinks the pureblood propaganda kool aid even when sirius tries to refute it; bratty youngest sibling energy max.
these are just like,,,little things here and there and i don’t think i have a solid hold on him but yeah, this is a good starting point. fanon regulus just irritates the shit out of me ngl. gives me ‘nice guy 🥺’ vibes
Send me an ask with ‘thoughts on___’
