it’s so funny to me how people react when I tell them that me and my fiancé are going to be katara and ZUKO for Halloween and not aang. in this household we are ZUTARA shippers !! I know it’s controversial and I’ve had so many people ask me if I even watched season 2 & 3 and it’s always something like “but what about what happened in ba sing se??” what about it? I don’t care.

what are ur opinions on zuko? outside of kataang/zutara discourse

i enjoy zuko’s character! growing up, i had a tough time relating to him (especially because the way he spoke to his uncle would’ve gotten me kicked out of my asian household) but i think his story and arc are well-written for a show that aired on nickelodeon in 2005. however, i don’t think it’s as well-written as people think it is, and there are definitely areas that could be improved especially in the latter half of book 2. for instance, i don’t think atla did a very good job at building up his desire for the throne (this is one part i think natla exceeds very well at) so when he just becomes the firelord at the end it’s like.. wait? when did you even want the throne?

the conclusion for zuko’s arc is that he becomes the firelord that will heal the fire nation after 100 years of war. i think atla did such a good job at separating zuko from the fire nation imperialist empire further and further throughout the seasons that they didn’t really do a good job building up his ascension to the throne and his replacement of his father, as the true firelord that is meant to heal his nation. i always think that they removed his agency surrounding the choice to become firelord, and sort of tacked it on at the end, like yeah buddy you kind of have to do this!

there’s not really many moments where we see zuko going like, “but if i was firelord, maybe things would be different,” and having those seeds planted early on so that at the end it’s less like ‘you, 16-17 year old boy, HAVE to take this on’ and more along the lines of ‘i WANT to do this. i believe i am the change that my nation requires.”

i also really like the interpretation of zuko’s character that he’s the gaang’s resident angsty teenage boy and NOT the interpretation (fuelled by ship wars) that he’s the gaang’s father figure. dadko makes me want to kill myself. it’s just blatantly not true.

but yeah, he’s my third fave after katara and aang.

like the homie krankittoeleven, i pretty much only use angst as a plot device - there are only happy/hopeful endings in this household lmao - but if i consider context, the fic with the angstiest ending is probably Honorfall (zutara, rated E). maybe Of All the Things My Hands Have Held (zutaraang, rated M)..?

lots of my fics have happy endings ;))))) as for the happiest... ahh, probably If It Means a Lot to You (zukaang, rated M) and Flowers Never Pick Themselves (zutaraang, rated M).

er, yes and no? i feel like hate is a strong word. it's more so that there are some readers who have simply ~disliked~ certain premises of mine, which, y'know, is what it is! click away or write your own shit! ♥

mmm. this is a bit hard for me to answer because i feel like i could use improvement everywhere, always. i could probably use some more work in my dialogue though (just having more of it, i think). with conflict resolution as well - circling back to angst, i usually gloss over it because i want [my] characters to have nothing but good times and good endings. i need to be less wary of putting them through some shit, which i am working on!

anywayyy. my biggest strength is my prose!

up for debate, but personally my weakness is outlines. i try to use them but my brain does not like having "rules" when it comes to creating a story, even if i am the one to write them ;;

i'm a native (american) english speaker, so this question feels.. odd? bc ~american~? but as a native english speaker, i absolutely don't mind at all. i love languages and i love letting them into my brain! i myself use words from different languages, especially in what i'm writing is based in another country/place of origin.

Canonical evidence of Mai and Zuko’s unrelenting love for each other

I’ve seen many claim that in Zuko’s flashbacks we see Mai have a crush on Zuko, but that feeling wasn’t shown to be reciprocated, thereby emphasizing that their relationship came out of nowhere and was a late stage addition by the creators. But there are several details that hint otherwise, the most prominent one being that Mai was mentioned in Zuko’s flashbacks, was associated with happy memories with his mother, and was important enough to him to be an integral aspect of his childhood. And also, Zuko blushing back when talking about knocking an apple off of a head, while practicing his knife skills in front of Azula.

And of course when Azula mentions how Zuko and Mai have had childhood crushes on each other in the Going Home Again comic:

Speaking about the Going Home Again comic, Zuko explicitly mentions that “he missed seeing this side of Mai” - in reference to her carefree, outgoing emotions. Zuko’s banishment, Mai’s isolation from those her own age, and her repressive household have caused her to become a shell of what she once was. But she will always fondly remember the times she used to throw mud in Zuko’s face.

Now let’s talk about the Legacy of the Fire Nation book, which is surprisingly cited as “anti-Maiko” “pro Zutara” material as some users on the app. (As a separate aside, Iroh absolutely understands the powerful friendship between Zuko and Katara, and the other Gaang inserts can be interpreted as equally romantic (Was that all you were, or were you something more - something Iroh said about Sokka and Zuko)).

Also keep in mind the author Joshua Prett stated that he wasn’t allowed to introduce any new plot resolutions, which is why Izumi and Mai are mostly omitted save for this one golden piece of information.

I’ve seen many try and use this excerpt as hard evidence that Iroh absolutely detested the idea of mai and zuko. But the thing is, Iroh is explicitly referencing his and Zuko’s journey involving Ba Sing Se and the search for the Avatar, which is why he mentions the desert, Zuko having trouble sleeping, and finally, his relationship with Mai.

Although it’s a small mention, it’s an important one. It shows that throughout his exile, Zuko was thinking about Mai. So much so that he confided in Iroh about it.

Ive seen some try and make the argument that “living through something” means an explicit negative connotation. But let’s objectively analyze this. When Zuko feels something, he feels it deeply. So much so that the people around him are also enveloped in those feelings, like we saw in The Beach. Zuko missing and agonizing over Mai, even when she’s not there, and so much so that Iroh lives through his feelings, shows that she’s always been on his mind. Living through something means vicariously experiencing the other persons thoughts and emotions.

My personal, not so head canon: When Iroh suggests Zuko go on a date with Jin to experience being a normal teenager and shake him from his pessimism, it’s quite in line with canon to interpret this as him wanting to stop pining over Mai. Of course, that doesn’t work mainly because of Zuko’s guilt and hesitation (he will never be a normal teenager, so why the pretense) but also because Zuko isn’t over Mai. I mean we saw how he acted when Mai broke up with him and dated Kei Lo :)

Couple this with the fact that in the uncut script of the Avatar the Last Airbender cartoon, Mai gave Zuko a heart shaped rock for him to hold onto during his banishment. (Cr. Minireklamo)

But perhaps the most amazing part is when Mai is shown to be enjoying tea and pai sho with the rest of the Gaang members. The Gaang is an undeniable, essential part of Zuko’s life. He chose to share that part with the love of his life. And mai, despite being reserved and reluctant to enjoy things most times, is an active participant in this intimate part of Zuko’s life. She’s engaging with his friends. She doesn’t scoff or turn away. Zuko’s friends become her friends. She is so important to Zuko that he chooses to share this happy, comfortable moment with her. They might be from different backgrounds, opposite sides of the war, but they all love Zuko. Also Mai and Aang are besties by the way, and Aang (Zuko’s best friend and most important ally, and the most important part of his redemption and reckoning) canonically describes Mai as Zuko’s soulmate.

“I’m happiest of all for Zuko. He is the new firelord. And it seems he found a real soulmate in Mai. She’s so much prettier now that she smiles.”

Being a fan of Mai and Maiko means you are at a distinct disadvantage - Mai is not one of the main members of the Gaang and therefore has 1/8th of the screen time of everyone else. She’s not subject to the same emotional, groundbreaking journeys that the rest of the Gaang embark on with Zuko. Very little is shown of her childhood and upbringing, so the audience is left to reconcile with what we are given in canon. While the show is limited, the Avatar universe expands a great deal on the budding relationship between two childhood best friends, lovers, and soulmates. It is up to the reader individually to determine how much they want to recognize in their interpretations - but it does not change that in the canonical universe of Avatar the Last Airbender, Mai and Zuko were destined to be together and forever. PS: Seeing as fans of other ships pick up what they want to from these in universe materials as insurmountable evidence for their ship, I want to see more Maiko fans appreciate the nuggets of information we have from them.

The point is, Mai and Zuko were never written by the creators to be a random ship that suddenly popped up in Zuko’s life. We see explicit evidence of their reciprocated crushes in the show itself. We see that Mai was such an integral aspect of Zuko’s happy childhood that she’s mentioned in his fondest and deepest memories. She was introduced to the show outside of her relationship with Azula , in contrast to Ty Lee, who we see only when she joins Azula’s team. Her character was given arguably one of the coldest, rawest lines in the whole show. In universe canonical materials suggest that Mai never stops loving Zuko, Zuko never stops loving Mai, and their breakup was only temporary, given how Bryke themselves said “I wish we could turn the comics into an in between show. We were going to show a mini clip of old Zuko and Mai.”

ATLA spoilers/Azula stuff. Kinda big mad now, why does this fandom suck so hard.

I posted something in the ATLA fandom for the first time and was super excited about participating. Then I was immediately grossed out by how much ship hate and toxic discourse there is oml.

The ship wars surrounding Zutara are bad enough, especially when I ship all the things. But on top of that, apparently if you think Azula can be redeemed (not in the sense of being forgiven, but more like coming to terms w her past actions and sorting out her very, very obvious baggage), or are even ambivalent to the idea, you're a fascist sympathizer?!

I don't even care what happens to Azula. but some people really gotta chill with the attacks and tbh, totally reductive takes?

For starters, Azula was literally groomed to become a child soldier by her father. It doesn't excuse her actions at all, but there are so many signs in the show to explain why she is like she is, and why her finding some kind of closure wouldn't be out of the blue. The whole point of her and Zuko's backstories were to show how things came to be how they were. The writers and animators didn't put that stuff there for no reason.

That look on her face when Ty Lee was speaking during the campfire scene, for example? She was obviously sympathetic to Ty Lee, but as soon as Ty Lee looked at her, she snubbed her! She wanted to care, but she didn't want to show it. World's most obvious 'tough guy' act, and how much do we wanna bet it was because her father didn't let her show weakness, and she was just more receptive to indulging it than Zuko was, for whatever psychological reasons? She came off like she was hard-wired for self-interest, which probably predisposed her to all of Ozai's bs. But I also see people calling Azula a psychopath, and I'm like bruh, did we watch the same show?! A psychopath would feel no emotions about hurting people, Azula clearly does feel stuff, even if she takes pride in her war-related work, which does involve hurting/killing people. She's not a psychopath by definition, plain and simple, calling her that is reductive af.

I don't even think 'psychopath' is the right term to use in general for people like that, so there lol. Credibility points -1.

Then she apologized to Ty Lee during the party. Her apology could've just been a way to keep Ty Lee on her side, but then she went a step further and openly admitted to being jealous of Ty Lee. What purpose did that serve in the initial apology? None! She just did it because reasons, it had no functional or tactical purpose. Her interactions with all the party people screamed that she wanted relationships, too, but she didn't know how to communicate, and it obviously bugged her. She was upset about it.

She's shown she cares for Zuko at many different times, for example, she finds out he's been visiting Iroh, but she doesn't tell anyone even though she should. She's 'looking out for him'.

She also had a total breakdown at the end of the show. Again does it excuse her actions? Nah fam, not at all. But her emotional turmoil was super obvious. She'd built up an identity around being strong and winning at all costs, and she lost it, and she never got closure with her mom, so she didn't have anything left and she just.. cried. That doesn't sound irredeemable to me, that sounds like a scared fucking person who is wondering why the f everything they're doing, which they've been told to do from day one, is falling apart.

She's a 14-y/o child soldier, and I'm not about to say child soldiers are all irredeemable (again in the context of finding self acceptance and closure) in spite of the horrors they've done and the brainwashing. She's also a product of her environment and her abusive father, of generational trauma, and I'm not about to say people who grew up in abusive households can never get better from all the harm that was done to em! I've seen some really shitty people totally turn over a new leaf.

One of the best quotes from the show is something Aang says: 'Roku was just as much Fire Nation as Sozin was, right? If anything, their story proves anyone's capable of great good and great evil.'

So I'm not buying the narrative that Azula is pure distilled evil and has nothing going for her, not with what the show has given us. Ozai had virtually no redeeming qualities, but there are so many hints with Azula that it really pisses me off to see so much garbo talk around her.

Anyways that's my complaining for today.

I really don't wanna go near this fandom. I don't know what the tags are for discourse/harassment free stuff, where people can just ship what they want, and want what they want, without being heckled or shit on. If anyone knows a tag or some blogs like that, hmu.

(Inb4 all the people without nuance interpret this as 'I support Azula's war crimes', who are the main reason I sure as f won't be letting this loose with reblogs. I guess people can still screenshot this and take bits out of context, but idgaf. Their problem not mine!)

I'm writing this as a big Katara stan. I just found out that a new film about an adult Gaang is planned to be released, and Katara, like Aang, will be given a leading role there. I am so excited and glad that finally Katara will be given due respect as a character!

But for some reason, after searching on Tumblr, I saw joy about a new film in the entire Atla fandom except for our zutara community. on the contrary, there is a lot of discontent and bitterness. But why is that? Is it because zutara won't be in the movie? Well, yes, zutara is a fanon ship, it will never be anywhere but our fanfics and fanart. But after all, Zutara is not in the original ATLA show, and we still love it! This is no reason not to rejoice at the opportunity to see our favorite characters on the screen again, to see Katara again (God, I'm screaming with delight😍😍😍😍). Yes, there is a chance that the writing will be bad, but there is always such a chance before the release of any film. I'm just so happy to see Katara again, and the whole gaang too, and her new design for this movie seems so great to mе!

i mean this genuinely, anon: i love that you love katara so much, and i am really happy for you that you're looking forward to the new movie. i truly hope you enjoy it.

i don't want to speak for the rest of zutara fandom, but i can't share your feelings because - to put it point-blank - i don't trust the creators with katara's character. ever since they lost their writing team, nothing they've created post-atla has proven to me that they understand katara's character, or how to create a good arc for her. it's telling that the only post-canon comic featuring a decent story for katara (katara and the pirate's silver) came out in 2020, twelve years after the original show ended (and which was also, notably, the first comic that bryan and mike were not involved with).

i'm sure some people are salty that they won't see canon zutara, but personally i'm relieved that i won't have to see bry.ke ruin romantic zutara like they did with their friendship post-atla. i'm sure they'll do their damnedest to fuck up what remains of zuko and katara's platonic relationship in the new movie, which is why canon ended for me with the final agni kai. no magic pointy rock or canon ships in this household, thank you.

i wish i could share your excitement for the movie anon, but i just don't have faith in bryan and mike to do justice to the characters (especially zuko and katara) after everything they've said and created over the last decade. like really, calling zuko a bad boy in the year of our lord 2023? please watch your own show.

besides, nothing they can do for katara in this movie will retcon what they did to her in LOK. i already know she ends up as a sad, lonely housewife without any real power, impact or legacy; that can't be changed, no matter how they try to "fix" it. it looks like the movie has been delayed so my hope is that it just gets cancelled in production. atla has been milked to filth anyway; leave the og characters alone and do something new with the universe, or just let it rest in peace and find another story to tell.

Once Camilo gets more comfortable around Bruno, they decide to team prank the family. They do pretty good until Isabela and Mirabel team up to retaliate (and/or compete).

Camilo and Bruno use Bruno’s visions for ideas and to see where opportune prank moments will be (?). Of course they use Camilo’s shapeshifting. Maybe objects the Bruno keeps in his room. Maybe they swap sugar for salt?

Isa and Mirabel use plants and casita for ammo. They Also use various everyday items.

Thought maybe this could be taken out to the town, but that would get them in trouble with Abuela and others in the town. Or the teams could prank each other while they’re out.

There would be a point where they are told to knock it off.

At the end, the four of them are lying in Isa’s room or on the lawn thinking and talking about the day. Bruno’s soaks in the moment with his nephew and nieces.

I was remembering the scene where Katara yells at Sokka for being sexist. "Ever since Mom died, I've done all the work around camp while you've been off playing soldier!"

Sokka isn't playing soldier in the form of playing pretend or even entertaining delusions of grandeur.

Ever since their mom died, Sokka probably took his role as a tribal warrior more seriously, and much sooner than if there hadn't been a war.

During the raid that took their mom from them, Sokka made a choice to stay with the warriors. He watched the fight happen from behind a snow wall until he gathered up his courage to join. He thought his place was with the warriors to defend from the front with the homes, women, and children behind.

BUt when he finds out his mother was killed, he may have internalized it and wondered if he made the right choice.

"It's not a day I like to remember."

"I was so relieved when it was over... but I didn't realize that we had lost our mom."

Sokka is a warrior who is supposed to protect his family...and he failed to do that. As a son, he failed to protect his mother. As a warrior he failed to protect the sanctity and safety of his household. As a warrior, he failed to protect his chief's wife. Admitting that failure to himself hurts. It may make him doubt his ability to be the warrior and leader he is meant or called to be. If he can't protect the people he loves, he own family, the people most precious to him, who will trust him to protect their loved ones?

Which could be why Yue's death hits him so hard. He failed to protect his mother, and now the Northern Chief is entrusting the life and safety of his precious daughter to him. Even though Chief Arnook knew that his daughter could become the moon spirit, it's still another person that Sokka took into the deeper parts of his heart.

He failed to protect his mother, and now he's failed to protect someone he had deep feelings for. This is one of the reasons he tears up when he sees Yue's ascension in the Ember Island Players. It reminds him of his loss, but it also strikes like a lance at his insecurity and biggest regrets.

This has been said (I don't have the link for the post right now), that Suki telling Sokka that she "came to make sure [he] got through the serpent's pass safely" was a relief for Sokka to hear. He doesn't need to protect Suki the way he thought he had to, and he finally has someone looking out for him! His father and older warriors are away at war, so he's on his own. Even though Katara will defend her brother in battle, in Sokka's mind, she is his responsibility. Suki is in a similar position that Sokka is. A leader and warrior tasked with the duty to protect her village and the people she loves. She is a capable warrior who can protect herself but also those around her.

Sokka will protect Suki, come hell or high water, come Fire Nation soldiers or malignant spirits, but now, he has someone watching his back. Someone, an equal, who can help him protect the people he loves.

Got this idea while at work today. When the Steambabies are little, they go to the Southern Water Tribe with their parents and see the Otter-penguins. They imitate the way the penguins walk while on the ice. When they learn how the mommy and daddy penguins carry their babies it starts a phase of the kids grabbing on to their parents and calling them “Mama Penguin!” or “Papa Penguin!”. Meaning they want their parents to waddle a short distance while they hang onto their legs, or while they stand on their parent’s feet and hold onto their hands. The latter provides opportunities for Zuko and Katara to have a waddle race to see which team wins.

Twilight will sometimes come home exhausted and still insist that he’s fine. Anya and Yor eventually come up with Operation Pillow Fort and Operation Couch. (formerly Operation Knock Out)

Operation Pillow Fort is guide tired target to bed. Agent Anya guides target by the hand to bedroom while Agent Mama guides target from behind by his shoulders. Once target is on bed, Agent Anya plants herself on the mattress to watch the target. Maybe she has drawing supplies or a school book. Yor makes some calming tea and brings it in. Head rubs maybe needed for extra relaxation. Mission complete when target is relaxed, comfortable, and not insisting that he be busy.

Operation Couch is for when target is being stubborn. If pushing from behind and pulling forward doesn’t work, Agent Mama carries target to couch. Either over the shoulder or bridal style. Agent Mama sets target on couch, then Agent Anya places thin pillow on Target’s lower legs and sits on them. Agent Anya is is serious mode. Target tries to bribe her to get off. When cartoons and outings don’t work, he tries peanuts. Agent Mama hears bribery and reminds Agent Anya that a good sentry never leaves her post, no matter what treats she’s promised. Banter might ensue between target and Agent Anya until Agent Mama comes over with tea. Mission is considered complete when target relents to rest.

(Sometimes Agent Bond is asked to fetch things around the room to bring to target. Book, remote, etc. although target does comment that asking agent bond to fetch things could damage objects being brought over. So this only happens a handful of times.)

The two of you had suggested Fugaku wait until Sasuke was ready to take over the role but the Uchiha insisted he was too old to wait for his youngest son to mature enough for the position.

“How about the koi fish from Avatar? Tui and La, I think that would be a cool couples tattoo, we can get them and the symbol for our favorite nation.”

"Ah, fire nation is my favorite, Mr. Water Tribe peasant." I giggle as I lean over to flick his nose. "I still think Katara and Zuko should have gotten together." I pout a bit remembering the end of the show ended with Aang and Katara becoming a couple. "But that would be so pretty! Our little Yin and Yang koi fish, maybe we could do our own little Zutara theme with Tui and La with Ran and Shaw as well." I had wanted to try to incorporate both of our ideas in the design since it will be on both of us. "Since this will probably be a big piece, I'll get it on my thigh."
