The lack of self-awareness game in Zutara shippers is crazy as shit,Katara and Zuko were obsessed with Aang the whole show while thinking the other was the biggest loser in existense and Katara said 1613948 times she hates having to act like a mom and wants to be a real kid and rizzed up Aang like almost every episode starting from The Boy In The Iceberg and Zuko's redemption arc only worked because he was actually willing to unpack his baggage and improve as a person and rid himself of his bigoted ways and selfish treatment of others because he didn't deserve to be babied after all he did to the Gaang and it's hammered into our heads in-text and so's that Aang and him are platonic cosmic soulmates by choice against the universe trying to keep them apart and Katara is Litte Miss Punk Tactics(reclaiming femininity against traditionalism and cisheteronormatovity and fucking eco-terrorism at 14 as her lifestyles??????Damn okay slay babygirl)and YET,

Okay i can't even list off everything Zutaras gentrify in the fandom because the list is longer than Iroh's beard but i will say that Katara ending up with Zuko is about as dark richer storytelling than Kataang + Dadko as telling Bob The Builder 'No we can't',about as feminist as Rick Riordan and about as positive rep for woc as The Hunchback of Notre Dame

Brief note:

My blog can and will vary at any point in time from extremely detailed and very self-indulgent multi-fandom geekery that can and will go from my long, detailed speculation on events like the War of the False Primarch or the Nova Terra Interregenum and all things Iron Warriors, to Sandman meta and being one of the few writers who consistently uses Death as the protagonist, to dunking on both SW canon and the fandom with equal joy in it, to ATLA and why a cartoon's fanbase is more cartoonish than the cartoon and a case of a canon throwing itself off a cliff with concrete shoes and a safe tied to it with a chain, to what have you.

And it will include both history and/or contemporary politics and how each mirrors the other. It's not an either/or thing.

I will also note that as a fan my focus on Fandom relies heavily on a blend of two things. The MST3k mantra of 'it's just a story and you really should relax' and remembering that characters in a story are vehicles to move the story, not your imaginary friend in prose. This is distinctly a minority view so I will feel free at points to go for some pretty vicious takes on people who keep forgetting that fiction is fiction and reality is reality and ne'er the twain shall meet.

if i were to give one piece of writing advice it would be this: if you have to choose between character drama and lore, choose character drama every time

#personal crap #when i was watching atla just now what stuck with me weren't any of the stuff about the background of the avatars or the nations #what i found effective was katara helping convince the earthbenders to rise up and aang being intimidated by avatar roku's warning #i kinda wish there were even more moments like those #but my point is if you can either have a strong character building moment or a strong lore building moment go for the former #because it's the difference between pretentious geekery and moments that make a story worth telling and retelling #maybe that's the reason i love stuff like su she-ra and the rtd era of doctor who: they're brimming with those kinds of character moments #so you kinda don't miss the lack of explanation some of the lore gets

Watching Hobie and Miles in Atsv was like meeting Katara and Aang all over again,i'm gonna be fucking sick bro.Miles is literally just Aang and Hobie is the Katara Zutara shippers don't want you to know about i.e canon Katara instead of Zuko's tr*dwife.The instant spark,the absolute adoration on both sides that they're so open and unashamed about,how Hobie and Katara are their mans' number one protectors,how much Miles and Aang look up to them and Miles calling Hobie 'insanely hot' in the script and that one Aang-o-vision moment where Katara has shoujo filter but she literally looks the same as always,that young puppy love that's so soft and earnest against the harsh reality they live in but work so hard to change for the better.When Hobie and Katara had to be rays of hope for their people,as Spiderpunk and the last Waterbender of the Southern Water Tribe,and didn't get to be kids really,Miles and Aang brought the sun back into their lives and change the whole system like they'd been wanting to and they bloomed into something that's friends but not quite platonic yet MORE than romantic.When the.When th.When youuuuuuuuuuu

This is mostly a Zutara shippers problem(ofc it is,they're the root of everything wrong with the fandom and it's been like this since the 2000s)but i've seen it happen often enough with other shippers and it is replacing Aang's place in Zuko's life with whoever they ship him with.I want you to read this and internalize it:I don't care who you think Zuko is in love with because it dosen't matter no matter what-AANG is his best friend.Not Katara,not Sokka,not Jet,AANG.He's the one who saved him from his own inner darkness and Ozai's clutches,he's the one he looks out for the most,he's the one he has the most positive opinion on,he's the one he has the most fun with,he's the one he trusts the most and he's the one he'd choose over anyone else if it came down to it.Not a single one of these things is romantic for them and that's the point.Zuko's number one is Aang and not because he's his s/o but his brother and you have no right to erase his healing journey that's one of the best in all of western media so you can make it about his dating life instead,as if abuse victims can only get better if they 'settle down'.Fuck outta here with your amatonormative and lowkey ableist too bullshit
