which cheeks is not tinie spreading 🤨🤨

a soft hum leaves diluc’s lips as he rolls over in bed, hiding his eyes from the bright sun streaming in from the window by burying his face in the soft skin of your neck. breathing in deeply, he wraps his arms around you and holds you close. despite always sleeping with our bodies more or less tangled up, at some point in the night you’d drifted away from him and were on your own side by yourself.

“no,” he grunts into your neck, knowing you couldn’t hear him since you were still asleep but not caring. “mine.”

you mumble something in your sleep that he doesn’t catch, and he just burrows further into you, clutching you tightly. you were so warm, and so comforting — the perfect thing to come home to during a harsh winter’s night.

you’d whined when he’d crawled under the covers last night, bothered by how cold his toes were when he pressed them against you beneath the blankets. he’d just laughed and cuddled you close, and your warmth had leeched into his chilly body as time progressed. after your first complaints ( that only really veiled your excitement that he was finally, finally home ), you’d snuggled up against him with your bare chests pressing together, content to hold one another. sleep came for both of you, and then suddenly for diluc it was morning.

he didn’t want to wake up yet. he wanted to stay in bed, stay in your arms, stay warm with you. morning meant work and exhaustion and drunkards. with a deep breath, diluc lets his body relax.

maybe he’d take the day off.

“i told you to be careful.”

his back is turned to you, and his tone stiff as he mixed up a cream to apply to your wounds. you sigh, unimpressed, as you scoot back a bit on the bed you shared with him. you knew you’d upset him by sneaking out, but a team of fatui had kidnapped two of your rangers ( tighnari may be leader, but you’d been tighnari’s partner for over a decade, and those were your rangers — not just his, both of yours ), and you couldn’t leave them to die — so while tighnari made plans and tried to decide whether or not to write cyno for assistance, you left.

“tighnari, it’s okay—“

“it isn’t!” he says lowly, putting a rougher touch into the poultice at hand. he was frustrated, you could tell, but you hadn’t done anything wrong. this reaction he was having? it was unfair.

“i — tighnari, you don’t understand,” you try, but ilhe refuses to accept it.

“no! you don’t understand!” he snaps suddenly, making you widen your eyes; his voice was shaking. tighnari’s voice never shook like that. his next words are spoken in a whisper. “i… i almost…”

the tension in his shoulders doesn’t melt away, but seemingly turns to mush as he steadies himself againsg the counter. his ears and tail fall, and you can see his hands trembling.

“gods,” he whimpers, “i almost lost you.”

and then you understand. he’d never been angry, he’d been scared — for you, for the rangers, for what could have happened if he’d figured out you’d left too late — he’d been terrified. for you.

your eyes soften and you push yourself up from the bed, cuts and scratches along your bared skin stinging as you moved to press against his back, your arms wrapping around his middle and your face against the spot between his shoulder blades.

“i’m sorry,” you murmur into his skin, “for scaring you, for rushing into danger, for all of it except for saving those kids.”

“i’m glad you did,” he admits quietly, “if we’d kept waiting, we likely would have lost them.”

“you would’ve gotten there in time,” you say into his back through a smile; you can feel him chuckle softly, and as one of his hands finds yours, you feel the tension really disappear.

“you believe in me that much?” he asks through his smile, and you nuzzle further into his back.

“always have,” you say softly, then swallow nervously. “are we… okay?”

you hear him sigh, then he turns around to face you, your head now on his chest. one hand comes up to cup the back of your head, and he nuzzles into the crown of it.

“we were never messed up.”
