Some of my favorite highlights with this amazing crew. I have loved stepping into Heidi’s shoes with such wonderful cast mates who have become my friends. Our director somehow knew that it wouldn’t take much effort at all for the four of us to get on stage and hold the attention of an audience for an hour and a half. You all mean so much to me, and I’m going to miss getting to goof off every night. Here’s to one last time- this has been a special one. 💕 #awaybacktothen #titleofshow #pbt2019 #nobodiesinnewyork (at Priscilla Beach Theatre) https://www.instagram.com/p/B2aIGseh95f/?igshid=4cjduch2rbqy

"[title of show]" show #633
The novelty of Jeff Bowen and Hunter Bell’s 2008 original musical, [title of show], may have worn off by now. Its sole Tony nomination (Best Book of a Musical) certainly has its merits, as it opened in July of 2008 and closed in that same year’s November, making it an early title in the 2009 Tony Book category against Lee Hall’s Tony-winning Billy Elliot, Brian Yorkey’s Next To Normal, and David Lindsay-Abaire’s Shrek the Musical. However, Bowen and Bell’s reputation is burnished by their sole Broadway collaboration because of the connections the four characters (and Larry) make within, well, the excellent book. Doug Brook has helmed an extremely intimate and well-connected [title of show], currently playing at Los Altos Stage Company; one that showcases not just stellar voices, but a smart, well-rounded cast who have developed the four characters into the very real people for whom they are named.

Two guys have three weeks to write a four-person musical: plot done. But it actually happened. That’s the attraction of a piece like this; it actually happened. Both Bowen and Bell were clever enough to create a legitimate piece of musical theatre and not only land it on Broadway, but create a show that is peppered with clever references (both modern and archaic) as well as some lovely songs. Mr. Brook has a cast of actors that not only have stellar voices, but have clearly explored, identified, and deliver the intricacies of Jeff, Hunter, Susan (Blackwell), and Heidi (Blickenstaff). Through Mr. Brooks’ clipped pacing and presentational blocking, alongside Esther Selk’s fluid choreography, this cast has all the makings for an excellent production, and that they have.
(Derek DeMarco (Jeff) and Nick Rodrigues (Hunter); Photo Credit: Richard Mayer)
Derek DeMarco and Nick Rodrigues play the chief writers, Jeff and Hunter, respectively. Mr. Rodrigues’s comedic chops are highlighted well in scene and song, especially with the hilarious, foul mouthed “An Original Musical.” Mr. DeMarco’s performance as the self-deprecating, realistic, too-smart-for-his-own-good Jeff never gets tiresome, but all the more entertaining as the play goes on. He and Mr. Rodrigues’ dynamite harmonies are on sterling display in “Two Nobodies in New York,” and “Part of it All.” They’re budding flamboyant bromance has a clear arc that is both entertaining and compelling to watch as the fun of writing on a deadline for a festival turns into drama when that festival becomes a Broadway possibility.
(Caroline Clark (Susan) and Jocelyn Pickett (Heidi); Photo Credit: Richard Mayer)
Jocelyn Pickett plays the established Broadway actress, Heidi. Miss Pickett’s beautiful vocals are on point throughout, whether in harmony or solo bits, but culminate in a stirring rendition of the 11 o’ clock number, “A Way Back to Then.” Miss Pickett’s physical comedy and versatility in comedic and dramatic takes make her Heidi a scene-stealing performance. Caroline Clark dons the role of Susan, a self-described “corporate whore” who just wants to create and have fun with friends. Miss Clark delivers a compelling “Die Vampire, Die!” where she finds the right balance between comedic timing and serious inflection. The two ladies duet very well in a lovely “What Kind of Girl is She?” and garner even more comedic cred in “Secondary Characters.” The four principals, as a whole, have created a 90-minute friendship that we, as the audience, are blessed to see; filled with connection, nuance, and layered relationships.
(Jocelyn Pickett (Heidi), Derek DeMarco (Jeff), Katie Coleman (Pianist/Larry); Photo Credit: Richard Mayer)
Yusuke Soi’s lovely scenic design gives the impression of a New York residence without compromising the intimacy the four chairs and a piano have for the musical. Carol Fischer’s lighting design is superbly appropriate in reaching the visual moods of intimacy, ecstatic, and dramatic--all moods needed to make Bell’s Book truly work. Lastly, but certainly not least, Katie Coleman’s piano playing/turn as Larry is excellent, always providing a nice bounce to the more tuneful songs, and a somber timbre to the ballads. [title of show] runs through June 24th, so make your plans now to catch this absolutely wonderful production of a most cleverly-written musical.

George Salazar stared in a small musical close to where I live yesterday, me and my parents went to it, we originally had seats in the very back of the Theater, but since the seats were not all sold out there were three seats in the very front right next to the stage and the stage manager said we could sit up there. Everyone in the musical so amazing, after the show I got to meet George and the cast and I had a 20 minute conversation with George, I talk to him about How be more chill has really affected my life and how I’ve always wanted to meet him, it was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had in my life and I’m so glad I got to meet him after 2 years of listening to and obsessing over be more chill and Michael (George’s character in BMC) let me tell you this kiddos, George Salazar is one of the nicest people I’ve ever met. He is so kind and sweet and just aH,

And when you least expect
Opportunity walks through the door
You suddenly connect
With the thing that you forgot
That you were looking for
And there you are
Right in the middle of what you love
With the craziest of company
You’re having a kick-ass time
And being who you wanted to be in this world
You’re that little girl
With her wings unfurled
Flying again

If you had to sing I'm public (karaoke or lip sync or what have you) what is/would be your go-to song(s)? :)
My go to musical theatre audition song is always All That Jazz :) I also love to sing Die Vampire Die from [titleofshow] because it's mostly a great monologue. When I sing karaoke I usually go with Come Together by The Beatles. Thanks for the question! 💕
