Idea for a fanmade Leitner inspired by a different post I just saw:

Leitner that's a "Where's Waldo" book (no, not "Where's Wally", its a US originated Leitner, and if you complain out loud about it not being "Where's Wally" before reading it fucking explodes your head the second you open it) where as soon as you spot Waldo in the first page, in each subsequent page he gets more and more obvious to spot as he gets closer and closer to the viewer. His usual smile starts flattening out the closer he gets until his face is dead center, taking up a majority of the page with a blank look on his face staring directly into your eyes and you know for a fact that he's looking at you and actually seeing you.

Then you start noticing Waldo in different books that are definitely not copies of "Where's Waldo". And in the background of TV shows. And Movies. And then in real life crowds. And he's always getting closer. Always with that blank, haunted stare from the last page of the original Leitner.

And then, fuck, idk, he kills you or something???

Oh no, waitwaitwait, you end up as one of the people in the crowd in the "Where's Waldo" Leitner, as Waldo gets closer to the viewer the people in the crowd around him start looking more and more openly horrified and outright distressed to the point of visibly sobbing and screaming and those are the people who've read the book before and got McLeitnered™

i’m making my own tma tarot deck as i delve deeper into learning the meanings of the cards and my personal interpretation of them. once i finish, i plan to make these downloadable so you can put together your own tma tarot deck :)

today’s card: the fool

i decided the dog situation from the 2019 live show was perfect for the fool. both martin and jon have just begun their journey in the magnus institute in that special, plagued only by nativity, some hope and self expectations. also, the dog was too perfect since there is traditionally a dog that accompanies the fool.

also, yes, i know martin said he thought the dog was a spaniel but i headcanon that he doesn’t know his dogs for shit and it was actually a corgi (yeah i put collie before cuz autocorrect and apparently corgi doesn't have an e in it).

I've got a mug with the Leitner rant on it (custom gift from a friend), I've got a TMA tarot deck, a music box that plays the main theme, two fanart prints, and I backed the TTRPG at the highest tier... but I'd love to see what else people can cook up.....

i want you to know that if you made a full ofmd tarot deck i would 100% buy that!!

That’s so sweet! :) Thank you! I’ve definitely considered it but there are a couple of factors that make it so that I don’t think I’ll ever make a physical deck of the OFMD tarot.

First, it would mean that I’d have to illustrate all 78 cards. I wouldn’t want to do the minor arcana numerically. I'd want the imagery to actually correspond to the meaning of the card so they are easier to read. The downside is that that would be A Lot Of Work. My current pace is that I can finish a card like The Lovers in one day if I work at it all day, so roughly 8-10 hours but I’m working on a card right now that’s already taking me 16 hours. I’m still a student, so it’s a lot of labour on top of my studies and tbh some of that time should be spent working on my thesis haha

Then there’s the manufacturing. I’d have to find a place to get the cards printed and boxed. I'd have to research companies, get proofs and think about distribution. I think it'd be wise to get a poll out to see where the people who want the deck are located so I would know where to get them printed to limit shipping distance (I'm in Europe myself). I’d probably have to do a Kickstarter to get the funds for a first run and that all sounds like a whole lot of trouble and a big risk to take on.

And even if I did, I’d probably get a cease and desist from HBO. I know that fans of The Magnus Archives made a tarot deck together, but TMA is produced under a creative commons non-commercial 4.0 international license and has a pretty approachable publishing company. Those fans were probably able to get the producers’ blessing for the project. I don’t think HBO will like someone working with their IP, even if I donated the profits. They might want to bring out their own authorised tarot deck in the future like Stranger Things did.

TLDR: I would LOVE to make a physical tarot deck but I don’t think it’s feasible. For now, I’m still having a lot of fun drawing the cards. I have two in the works as of now, one that is coming out either later today or tomorrow. I’m really glad that people are enjoying them! I like matching the meaning and imagery of the cards to moments in the show and sharing that with other fans.

So thanks for your interest! Even if I'm not making a physical deck, people are free to print them for private use if they feel like it. But as I said, even if I end up completing the deck, it's going to take a while haha
