Gruntruck – s/t LP (Found Recordings)

Something “aging poorly” over time necessitates that it at least seemed like a fresh, exciting, or well-executed proposition during the initial active phase that framed its the birth and any growth that followed. Not so with Gruntruck, which came out of the waning days of two mid-to-late ‘80s Seattle bands; one great (The Accused) and one not-so-great (Skin Yard). These two groups shared a practice space in the very late ‘80s/turn of the ‘90s, and after both bands would wrap up for the night, the vocalist of the former (Ben McMillan) would jam out some self-described “big dumb rock songs” with the guitarist of the latter, Tommy Niemeyer. Skin Yard and The Accused lost the plot through misguided musical directions and growing disinterest, like so many bands did over that period, though that might be a bit off considering the former was one long misguided musical direction that no one ever really liked for good reason. Side project then became main project; even the name was a calculated marketing move on the part of McMillan, who by then was watching the other garbage he envied (Soundgarden and Alice in Chains, specifically) gain serious traction on the fake-underground-to-mainstream route as the quasi-style we know as grunge.

My first and last exposure to them as an active cause occurred when I was 17 or 18 and on an exploratory top-down journey with Dinosaur Jr, Sonic Youth, Fugazi, Swervedriver, etc. still figuring large. A drug buddy with a car was on a similar, but not as refined, trajectory and we had a loose ritual of taking bong hits at my mom’s apartment before engaging in the light gamble of hitting a nearby CD/tape chain store. My mistake for the day was a CD of Type O Negative’s Slow, Deep and Hard, based on the album being listed as a modern document of “the heaviest music ever made” in a profile that ran in Alternative Press. His was Gruntruck’s Push, which went into the CD player first. As it blasted into my baked brain at deafening volume through the system that came in his newly-acquired Toyota Celica (a pretty fancy sled at the time and def for anyone I ran with), I distinctly remember thinking “I’m so glad there aren’t any girls with us.” I would think this for a totally different reason once Petrus Steele’s opus went in the player and we had to literally pull the car into a random parking lot until our spasmic laughing fits receded to a point that was safe for driving. If curiosity is leading anyone to YouTube right now. While you’re there, peep a Gruntruck video from the Pushalbum then follow it with “Barfly,” the pre-release (and opening track of) effort to rep this (hopefully) futile gesture of negative historical value.

Gruntruck is such a perfect storm of ‘90s Broternative wack, such the consummate misfire within the giant misfire of that moment’s mainstream repackaging of an underground that didn’t exist as such. Theirs was a comprehensive box-checking of cartoonishly-unsavory musical and aesthetic ideas. No disrespect to the passing of a principal figure in this regard, but Gruntruck’s legacy should have remained the domain of YouTube and accidentally-acquired used CDs (if that’s even plausible over the last half-decade) as available evidence that revisiting this band’s sonic legacy is aggressively unnecessary and good for a negative amount of current-day influential benefit, an example of the reissue/archival industry and attendant culture being hostile to historical accuracy, relevance and taste. Hi it's secret santa again. thanks for the language learning tips. I want to see all the musicals you mentioned. Am a huge fan of german musicals now (listen to them more than english musicals). They are really good and there's something about watching it in another language (like going to the opera!). When you listen to the audio, you focus on the music. I like Ivan, especially when he sings tdv in russian - he has a very strong voice. Who are you favorite musical actors (and in which roles)?

There’s a proshot of that Dracula with subtitles on youtube! Not sure about the Rudolf one. I know that’s there’s a proshot VOB of it with optional subtitles. I watched it on my birthday YEARS ago. And I know how you feel, besides my 3 crap musicals, it’s german musicals all the way. OH! I totally forgot, some other famous german musicals, Marie Antoinette, Rebecca, and Mozart. All by the guys behind Elisabeth. No subtitles for Marie Ann, I had to google translate the plot from the German wiki article and read it. I’m pretty sure that was same for Rebecca and Mozart.

You like opera? I love Faust! (that recording on TV from the met staring jonas kaufmann was amazing) The Chicago lyric opera house is gonna do a production of Faust next year and I’m SO excited to see it! I’ve actually seen quite a few operas there, lucia di lammermoor, Onegin, Carmen, and just saw The pearl fishers two days ago.

Yeah, Ivan is so good in Tanz. He’s like my favorite musical singer, love him in all his roles. Especially Tanz, Phantom, Jekyll/Hyde, and Master and Marg.

Big fan of Chris Murrary. LOVE him in Chess and Dracula. Liked him in the Jekyll and Hyde from around 10 years ago. Kinda iffy on the one from a few years ago. He’s really physical in the older one and he tries to do it in the recent one, but it turns kinda comical in confrontation. Thou his acting is very kitschy comical a lot, like in all his roles. still love him.

Really like Rob Evan as Jekyll and Hyde, chess, and from his cover of Total eclipse of the heart, would’ve liked him as underestudy Krolock in bway

Really love Davis Gaines in poto. Muirin double 0 7 was talking about how norm lewis was amazing in the role and his voice was ‘like melted, buttered Nutella dripping with the urgency of rum-tinged molasses onto a swath of crimson velvet.” For me, THAT’S Davis Gaines. (honestly everything they said is how I feel about Gaines)

Like Drew Sarich in Dracula and in his three roles in Lestat. Haven’t really seen/listened to him in Tanz thou.

Really like Rob Fowler’s voice as Death. Really want to hear him in the new Bat out of Hell musical (yes Jim Steinman made that. It’s a jukebox musical of Meatloaf songs. plots pretty crazy)

Love Hugh Panaro in Lestat and phantom. Actually saw him in PotO like 6 years ago. Saw it the same time I saw Rent off broadway, so had to be oct/nov 2011

like Chuck Wagner in Jeykll and Hyde and the 2000 demo of Dracula where he sang the role of Helsing. The song Nosferatu is so good

Tommy Korberg is so good as Anatoly in Chess (never heard him in anything else thou)

22 Oktober yang lalu, gue ketemu @adrakarim di suatu jam session di @paviliun_28 . Diawali dari obrolan seputar musik jazz yang sebenernya gak gue kuasai amat sebagai klarinetis, akhirnya topik bergulir ke ajakan Adra untuk berkolaborasi menulis sebuah komposisi baru, Konserto untuk Hammond Organ dan Orkestra. Rencananya karya ini akan Adra mainkan dengan iringan Orquesta de Camara de Siero di aula Centro Niemeyer, sebuah gedung pertunjukan modern di kota Aviles, wilayah Asturias, Spanyol pada 16 Desember nanti. . Kebetulan 2 tahun lalu gue uda pernah sempet nulis komposisi konserto untuk orkestra dan solis harpa, baru 9 November kemaren ditampilkan Jakarta City Philharmonic dan Rama Widi, di bawah arahan konduktor Tommy Prabowo. Adra dateng nonton dan dia seneng banget karena ternyata kami sama-sama punya perhatian khusus untuk ngembangin idiom-idiom musik Indonesia menjadi bentuk-bentuk baru dalam karya-karya kami. . Nulis komposisi konserto dengan 3 babak dalam waktu 1 bulan adalah tantangan yang hampir mustahil bisa kami kerjakan. Untungnya gue dan Adra sama-sama punya segudang trik untuk maksimalin waktu yang ada. Adra uda punya beberapa tema dari karya-karya jazznya, gue pun juga ikut bikin tema baru, lalu dari ide-ide utama ini kita susun aransemennya, interpolasinya, hubungan antar instrumen, juga hubungan antar babaknya. . Bahasa musik orkestra klasik/kontemporer mungkin bukan santapan Adra tiap hari, begitu pula dengan bahasa musik jazz dan irama/tangga nada Bali bagi gue. Di satu sisi Adra sempat meriset musik Bali dan aplikasinya dalam musik Jazz waktu dia tuntaskan studi masternya di Belanda beberapa tahun lalu, di sisi lain gue lumayan kutu buku dan doyan ngulik berbagai struktur komposisi. Jadi kolaborasi ini bener-bener jadi ajang untuk saling memperkaya bahasa musik gue dan Adra. . Semoga konsernya nanti lancar yaks! Gue sih uda bisa duduk santai setelah partitur ini kelar tadi subuh :D tapi elo masih harus latihan siapin karya ini sebagai solis ahaha, semangatt!!

UGO Entertainment: Interview with Tommy Niemeyer

Few rock bands can say they created a whole sub-genre themselves, but that's exactly what the Accüsedaccomplished with..."splatter core."

OK, maybe it's not as a renowned style as "thrash metal" or "hair metal," but the band has been at it since the early 1980's, and in 2009, released their sixth full-length overall,The Curse of Martha Splatterhead (via Southern Lord Records).

And with the Accüsed set to tour this summer, what better way for the group's guitarist (Tommy Niemeyer) to celebrate than with carefully navigating through the Short-But-Sweet-Interview?

UGO: How heavy is the latest album, The Curse Of Martha Splatterhead?

TOMMY NIEMEYER: On your standard "weights and measures scale" it's not super heavy, more deadly, lean and sharp, like a handful of those martial arts throwing stars being jammed into your face.

UGO: Would you agree that the Accüsed were one of the first bands to blur the lines between punk and metal?

TOMMY NIEMEYER: It's cool for the Accüsed to be considered "one of the first," but honestly, there were several amazing bands that were way ahead of the Accüsed and other bands from that era that just don't get the credit they should for mixing metal with punk. The Plasmatics (feat. the late, great Wendy O. WIlliams) and China White (Orange County, CA) are two I can think of immediately. Both of those bands' earlier stuff was HUGE in helping create so-called "crossover" of the mid-to-late 1980's.

UGO: Who were some of the notable bands the Accüsed has played with over the years?

TOMMY NIEMEYER: Jeez, man! We've shared a stage with some amazing groups over the years: G.B.H. (entire 1987 U.S./Canada Tour), Kreator (legendary Hollywood Palladium gig, 1990's), Voivod, Poison Idea (a bunch), Corrosion of Conformity, Wendy O. Williams, the Melvins, Die Kruezen, Forced Entry, the Adolescents, the Circle Jerks - those were some of my personal favorites. BUT! The weirdest live bill for the Accüsed HAS to go to a 1982 show in Seattle, where the Accüsed was lead support act for THE REPLACEMENTS! I still have the flyer!

UGO: Is it true that Mike Patton was approached to be the singer for the band?

TOMMY NIEMEYER: Yes. I was able to get in touch with him a few years back and asked him via e-mail if he'd be interested in being the Accüsed vocalist. As I had predicted before even e-mailing him, he said he had a bunch of various projects going on and couldn't do it. He did, however, tell me he was honored to have been even thought of, and thanked me for asking him, cuz he said he was a fan of the Accüsed from way back, etc. We stayed in touch a bit and I sent him a bunch of crazy, obscure vintage video titles I had access to from where I was working at the time. We saw him about a year later in Europe when both the Accüsed and he were performing at the same club in Vienna, Austria. VERY cool guy and an unbelievable talent. So creative and vast in his abilities as a vocalist.

UGO: Please explain just what "splatter core" is.

TOMMY NIEMEYER: Before the handy, yet highly annoying term "crossover" was invented, the Accüsed were indeed blurring the lines between punk and metal. So much so, that it was interfering with us getting gigs, getting reviews in fanzines, and describing our music to our girlfriends' grandparents. To distinguish the Accüsed from the shitload of glam bands or thrash metal bands of the time, our whacked-out blood and guts thing went full-throttle and we called our sound "Splatter Rock" - not sure where the "core" part came from, but it's close enough.

UGO: Is it true that the band's mascot, Martha Splatterhead, has been romantically linked to Iron Maiden's Eddie?

TOMMY NIEMEYER: Sort of. Eddie asked Martha out back when they were both in their first year of college. Martha said she had finals that week but maybe the FOLLOWING week they could go out. Well, wouldn't you know it? Iron Maiden got that kick ass slot on the Motörhead/Girlschool tour, and Eddie had to hit the road with the band. No date. We're thinking that when Iron Maiden finally gets their head outta their asses and asks the Accüsed to open up for them, well, then maybe like Peaches and Herb say, they'll be "Reunited cause they'll kill so gooooooood! Reunited 'cause it's understooooooood!
