I haven been able to watch all the POVs of the Timer quest dungeon today but GOD DAMN
The team of Etoiles, Foolish, Bad, and Cellbit was fucking unmatched and is the reason they were able to get through the dungeon.
Etoiles and Bad being the badasses they are and just going head first into the dungeon, trying to destroy all the spawners but mostly just making sure all the monsters target them. Watching Etoiles and Bad just pop totems and eat golden apples like they are candy was so cool to watch. Plus them hanging on the ceilings and being like “Hey you good? Just a normal tuesday” was fucking hilarious.
Then Foolish and Cellbit being amazing support! Cellbit tried his best to run through and break the spawners, but he was lagging a lot. He tried to communicate as much as possible in chat and talk to everyone to what was going on. He also tried to get people up and help people.
Foolish was the best fucking support. He tried his best to be a meat shield but ultimately was just helping people! He tried to revive people or if they died, get them to their stuff. And from what I remember he was checking in with Bad and making sure everything was good on his end.
I still need to watch everyone else’s POV but the teamwork from everyone was so good.

Gorilla Mask
As Nina does my makeup–swivels the contour and punches the blush onto my cheeks, a star, she says, I’m gonna make you a star, don’t you worry baby you’ll knock ‘em dead, you see–I smoke a cigarette and check the time. I’ve got half an hour before the curtains split apart like the legs of a wonderful, beautiful slut. I imagine the audience packed into velvet seats, dressed in cocktail dresses and the suit he plans to be buried in. A Tuesday evening. While my manager insisted on Friday night, I insisted on the opposite. When is the best time to be transported? When you least expect it. After an eight-hour shift at some metal box downtown, moving papers and pushing phone calls. I know my people. I know what they need.
Nervous? Nina asks, meeting my gaze in the vanity. You’re quiet.
I shake my head.
I fuck up, I go home, I say. And that’s the end of it.
This is my first show in twenty three years. Last time I was on a stage, I was a young golden cat that people rubbed for luck. I could sing God to sleep. I feared nothing and wanted everything. Once, I kissed a girl for the first time twice.
But that’s the hard part, right? Nina asks. Going home?
I laugh a dry laugh.
That is true. That is always true.
At the height of what you could call my career–that never ending totem pole, that white flash of light in which I saw nothing but mercury and moon shrapnel, I wrapped my limo around a city block. And that began the descent into capsules and deadbeat girlfriends. I broke my neck in the accident. Then, the pain pills began to taste like dust. And I needed something stronger to tether myself to the earth.
It was always a good day when I was high. I could spend seven hours staring at the ceiling and it would feel as though I’d gone on Space Mountain a billion times. I had a sitting heart rate of one hundred and twenty three. I still did shows though they were more like human zoo exhibits. The public came to watch me die. I slurred through old gospels. I fainted during an encore. Once, I gave up. I sat on the stage unmoving and someone had to come remove me. After I went to rehab for the first time, I stopped doing shows. It was only supposed to be a year off. But I couldn’t stop going back. I got into all sorts of things. I huffed paint to watch the wall turn blue. I did coke off of someone’s wedding ring during the wedding recital. I chased some kids down the block for ten dollars.
Elaine left. And I moved to Memphis. I sat on the back porch smoking heroin, noticing the light ooze through the leaves and feeling every breath in my chest. And I tried again. And tried three more times. I went to a rehab in California where they served lobster rolls and where you had to soak in a hot tub for forty five minutes each evening. I went to a rehab in New York where you could see the skyline pressed against the dark coils of night and the nurses wore short skirts. I went to a rehab in Paris where I beat a lawyer at connect four three times in a row and couldn’t figure out the shower head. Then, I overdosed in South Dakota while visiting some cousins; thin, bare chested men who shoot pistols with one eye closed and drink moonshine for lunch. I died for an hour; saw nothing but a few abstract, pink lines. The rehab I was sent to there was the one that did it. Nothing glamorous. A cold turkey sandwich at noon. Librium in the mornings. After detox, you’re on your own. Gotta change the sheets. Gotta clean the bathrooms. Gotta set the tables. No television after nine. No phone calls in the morning. I was already old by then. And nobody knew my name anymore. What the hell is following the rules for a while? I called my mother halfway through my stay there, after a lunch of fried chicken with plenty of nerve and gallons of black tea. I told her where I was, and what happened. How I couldn’t apologize.
Are you sorry? She asked.
I could see her standing in the kitchen, backed into a slant of light, arms crossed.
If you’re sorry, you won’t do it again. When you get out, you’ll know. So, we’ll see.
Mama, I can’t do it again.
We’ll see, she said.
And hung up. I knew she was right. I had to be good. It wasn’t enough to want to be good. I had to be out there, doing good in the daylight. When I got out, I didn’t go back to the cousins. I went to Memphis and started going to meetings and church. I didn’t know what to believe but it needed to be huge, crucial. A giant cock to rub. A pleasure to be had. I read scripture on nights I couldn’t sleep. After months of this safety walk, the songs came. I was with my sister Diana; a spoiled eggnog of a girl, ten years younger than I am but we’re wired in the same ways. I can read her mind. I’d know her heart from look alone. It was summertime and we were at the fair together. It was the first time since getting out that I felt safe to be among the others, the extraterrestrials made of crazy glue and fireworks.
And we were on the Ferris wheel, a thousand feet above the ground, everybody like throngs of specks of dirt below us, the stars as close as they’d ever been. I got a melody in my head like a buzzing gnat. And started singing. Diana stared as I sang, the words mush but the melody there. And we celebrated when I quieted down. I didn’t think I’d ever write another song again.
But there it was–the massive, throbbing thing to believe in.

TubNet Keynote Summary!
NEW BLOCK PLAZA:
The server lobby is the New Block Plaza. There are two main NPCs that will transport you to the games you want to play, and there's a Postman NPC that will give players daily login bonuses for watching a video!
There's a Snack Attack mini game in the plaza, and a Taxi that will let you explore and sightsee!
The Plaza's New Block Fashion store allows you to get custom cosmetics, and through the TubNet store you can buy cosmetics and ranks!
There is a garage attached to the Plaza, mounts will be available for players very soon!
The Plaza's Craft Cafe is a place to socialize and play social games, such as chess and checkers!
There is a Plaza gift shop that will eventually let players gift cosmetics to each other
New Block City is full of scenery and landmarks, and players will walk from game lobby to game lobby instead of teleporting
New Block City has LORE!!! Which Tubbo shared some of!
CRYSTAL RUSH
A mysterious device has gone haywire, and your mission is to help stop the crystals that are appearing!
You gather crystals to help buy things to defend your own nexus or attack others' nexus (the Nexus allows other teams to respawn)
You spawn with leather and wood, and collect or mine crystal shards to upgrade gear and buy blocks, custom items etc!
Upon death, a player loses all shards in their inventory, but can deposit them!
Nexus Shards can be gained from mining another team's Nexus, it lets you get much better items like nearly impenetrable armor or interesting power ups
Powerups shown in the CraftMaster event like Totems (Cloud, Healing, Defense and Wind), Grapple orbs, and the auto-bridging powerup will be in Crystal Rush!
Tubbo shared tips and tricks for Crystal Rush, such as which items are permanent and which are lost upon death
If a Crystal Rush game goes on for too long, Sudden Death will kick in, which implements a world border and removes all Nexus crystals to force a fight to the death
Forums.TubNet.GG is the place to go for suggestions or criticism about the game!
LIGHT STRIKE:
New Block City detectives have found unauthorized devices being planted throughout the city
This is a 4v4 team search and destroy game mode
There are two teams: The Placers, whose job is to place the devices (known as stars) and the Breakers, whose job is to break them!
The aim of the game is for one team to win four rounds. If a stalemate is reached, the game enters overtime, where three more rounds are added to the clock. Overtime can end in a win, loss, or stalemate.
Light Strike players have a Radio item, a built in Comm system that lets players send messages to various parts of the map so they can communicate with their teammates!
During the shop portion, players can buy weapons, instant-activate potions, and pickaxes for breakers. There are several custom items in the game, which Tubbo went over.
There are two maps available upon launch: Portside, an abandoned warehouse/shipping dock, and Zero, a laboratory built into the side of a mountain! It has boost and hover pads, as well as secret passageways!

i know i tend to type out... half way essays, in intonations that might be better read aloud than read silently, but i'm still very glad i chose to start liveblogging some of these games i play. it'll be nice to look back on this run, or the Smeargle X6 run, and get a nice bit of recollection about them. like how i figured out to get Nuzzle from Plusle in X, or how Kukui straight up whiffed four Cross Chops in a row. especially after how i kept ragging on how it always hit Smeargle. for real, 80% chance to hit.
i'm also pretty glad i managed to beat this run before February, even if my usual shiny hunting plans are. majorly busted at this point. most of the games i wanted to shiny hunt this year were on the 3DS, Arceus being a sort of persistent game until i get those Distortion exclusives. that's gonna be its own post this weekend. eh, maybe Monday or Tuesday, give myself some Splatoon time.
as for expectations... yeah, Hala kicked my ass. he was the hardest fight both times, and my overgrinding in the early game prevented how bad that one could actually have been. there was no reasonable overlevelling i could have done to prepare for the second fight, and the fact that the Chople berries didn't help was a surprise. i was expecting those to be mandatory, but i never successfully used one.
getting Rocks early was a blessing. most moves are easy enough to get, but a few amazing options either weren't available, or were just scarce, with one trainer being available to give it to me. with how much i had to level, i was less surprised about how Night Shade fell off, though i still kept it on one of 'em.
oh, you know, the Totem pokemon system was also a fun shake up for me personally, i only did Smeargle runs twice before, in White and X, and the totem 'mon/SOS system helped make some moves shine pretty well, i really liked that more than usual.
i think that's all i want to say here and now. i'll put the teams' moves under the Keep Reading, and thanks for reading!
the teams moves as the game went, and their Hidden Power types!
Saffron - Water HP -Thunder Wave -> Magical Leaf -Arm Thrust -> Earth Power -Disarming Voice-> Draining Kiss -Clear Smog -> Lava Plume
Viridian - Ground HP -Leer -> Clear Smog -> Spider Web -Quick Attack -> Foul Play -String Shot -> Cotton Spore -Icicle Spear
Cinnabar - Poison HP -Peck -> Acid Spray -Struggle Bug -> Energy Ball -Electro Ball -> Psychic -Spore
Vermilion- Steel HP -Bite -> Shadow Ball -Struggle Bug -Electro Ball -> Thunderbolt -Fell Stinger -> Nuzzle
Cerulean - Fighting HP -Night Shade -> Earthquake -Arm Thrust -> Power-Up Punch -Stealth Rock -> Flame Wheel -Icicle Spear
Fuchsia - Dragon HP -Night Shade -Pluck -> Play Rough -Leech Seed -Bulldoze -> Stealth Rock

TODAY IN FICTION: A cosmic horror rises from Qinghai Lake to destroy all humanity in SCP-4290 (2019)
Tumblr media
17th August 2022
Earlier this month on the 2nd of August, televisions in Qinghai, China all began to broadcast the same strange signal; an urgent request from an unknown source to “repair The Child’s locks”. The Foundation quickly got involved, and discovered that the source of the signal was a set of bronze totems at the bottom of Qinghai Lake. This structure is a set of locks, and it keeps a terrible creature imprisoned in the lake. Should these locks ever fail, the creature, henceforth referred to as The Child, will rise in a display of cosmic horror and claw at the fabric of reality until all of humanity is torn apart.
The Foundation hurriedly researched the ritual that they must carry out in order to repair the locks, knowing that they will have no chance to defeat The Child should it break out. They attempted the sacrificial ritual last Tuesday, but something went horribly wrong and the sacrifice did not reach The Child. With the terrible entity’s rise apparently inevitable, the Foundation braces for what will surely be the end of the world.
Today, The Child did indeed rise from Qinghai Lake. But rather than bringing the foretold destruction of humanity, it was completely motionless. Upon further investigation, the Foundation determined that The Child had been dead for thousands of years. And the cause of death was not particularly otherworldly or exotic; in fact, it was remarkably anti-climactic. The Child had merely starved to death.

After speaking with Mairead, I got my designs photocopied and blown up. We found a roll that I'm going to wrap the faces around to make a disrupted sort of portrait like a totem pole. I haven't decided yet whether to cut out the features individually and abstract them further or leave them as faces.

Superman--CEO? My Thoughts...
OK, if you're confused, the latest run in Action Comics has Superman in charge of what was once Lexcorp. Lex Luthor has begrudgingly come to the realization that Earth needs Superman. After a sequence of events that erases one of the most egregious bits of the Bendis run (namely, Clark revealing his identity to the world), Lex legally makes Superman the new head of Lexcorp--but now labeled "Supercorp."
Like it or not, the former Lexcorp is home to some of the best and brightest minds in the world. And they're happier to have Superman as a boss, rather than the somewhat...mercurial Lex Luthor.
Mercy Graves, Luthor's 2nd in command, takes care of the daily stuff. But, she hints, the workers wouldn't mind a visit from the boss once in a while, just for morale-building.
In the comics, Superman is cautiously accepting of the help and resources. He's not too crazy about his symbol being plastered on the top of the building. But ye gads, they have so many resources available. And yet, he holds the Supercorp people at a distance (and, not unjustifiably so).
Here's the thing: I think that Superman would make a great CEO. He could memorize personnel files. It might take him a few more minutes to map out the relationships between departments, the projects, and the resources available.
Every time he visits Supercorp, he talks to a random worker. They could be a project head or a cafeteria worker; it doesn't matter. He puts a bit of Kansas folksiness in it, but is always respectful to who he's talking to, no matter their position on the totem pole.
The workers love him. Every Tuesday, he has a different coffee shop bring in treats, including gluten-free ones. He talks to someone and they feel that he understands them. He's awesome. He's larger than life. He's Superman, you know? But he shows that he's just a guy who's trying to do the right thing. He wants them to do that as well.
(Of course, Bruce would have been tempted to say, "burn the whole thing down." But he didn't. Instead, he just gives a simple bit of advice: Know your people.)
Because I think that Clark would do that. He'd give them a chance. And in return, everyone at Supercorp would put forth 100% of their effort.
(Lois is both amused and annoyed that she has to put out a front page that says "Super-CEO." Clark just shrugs and says that they're not such a bad bunch, once you get to know them.)
And...thoughts? Questions?

12 — What struggle have they seen each other through? For Nora and Trystan, as well as Jane and Ethan! Love you and miss you so much, my sweet Mads. 🥰❤
Lin, it's been so long! How have you been? I really ought to catch up with you and your works and after all of this uni burnout concludes, that's the first thing on my list. Thank you so much for sending this Ask! It really means a lot to me to just talk about my characters!
> Ship Questions
Nora -> The trauma of her parents and her rather borderline addiction to throwing herself at danger. She blames herself even though she was a kid and that seeped into what she sees as her "duty" and to see anyone get harmed under her eye really did amp up that guilt a lot. Trystan had seen through some of her struggles.
She suffers from PTSD and generalised anxiety disorder and has some tough moments to get by. Sometimes even waking up could be a struggle. Sometimes getting shot at by a mob would be just another Tuesday.
Trystan -> Growing up, Trystan was never really taken seriously, rather used as a figurehead or a totem for his parents to pressure and mould him into. He suffers from people pleasing and wanting to do so much but being restricted to a backseat role in his own story.
Apart from that, it sort of put him in an awkward position where he wants to be considered important but with terrible self confidence issues, he struggles to navigate a world that clearly doesn't want him. Nora has seen him through his struggles and she can't do a lot because it is a personal battle for him to fight. She could only help him through some tough times and reassure him that a broken childhood and trauma from the past doesn't set a precedent for the future.
____
Jane -> Jane has terrible family issues. From being "outcast" for being pan to having to support her brother who is also gay, because nobody else would, she had some pretty tough times which caused her to develop some intense trust issues. She doesn't trust people easily and is always looking for an "out" or a "quit" button when she knows something is wrong.
Between that and the walls she'd constructed, she also suffers from anxiety and has the case of undiagnosed ADHD, which makes it doubly hard for her to focus on something. And it's hard because the medical field is incredibly demanding. The only thing Ethan did and continues to do is to tell her that she's doing a good job. Small affirmations helps her sort of gain a foothold on her life - that she's doing something right.
Ethan -> Between his absent mother and his emotionally distant father, Ethan didn't really have people to talk to and thus ended up bottling up all of his thoughts and opinions. And to get over the fact that his mother had resorted to drugs took enough out of him, leaving him a broken shell of a person behind.
It got to his self worth and ego, which sort of blew up his rather distant, cold personality, when in reality, he's far from being overly pretentious just so he could have that affirmation that he was nothing like his parents.
Jane, of course, doesn't do much about it because it is Ethan's struggle and she can't "fix him" much less, change his perspective. However she helps him rediscover his interests that he'd had when he was young, such as love for comic books, TV, football and all the other things he did before his life changed for the worse.
___
Once again, thank you for the Ask, Lin! I hope we can talk sometime soon! Cheers.

OKAY BUT hear me out. purpled meets justice league and. they come to one conclusion: This guy is Not normal. his entire get up is Purple. his name is Purple(d). his eyes are scaringly the same shade of purple as his hoodie. And if you will, small antennas and a tail to add to him. and this man is an assassin who owns a ufo.
hes an alien but treads on the human-alien lines. even the people who are called aliens are confused??? hes not even overpowered or even has a inhumane body hes just. Some guy.
but hes still a threat! hes an assassin!!!!! pick a struggle! youre either an alien or youre an assassin!!!
and then they find out hes not the only Weirdly Human Alien person. because then you have a ranboo????? and a slimecicle????? what the fuck is a totem and why is he called foolish??
then they get into this weird loophole of finding even weirder shit about this Purpled's homeplace..........like some guy named punz?? does he not have a normal name?? (editors note: its luke. Why does a guy named punz have an average name. why is a mercenary called luke some alien assassin's brother figure??)
SORRY FOR THE RAMBLING i just never had the chance to spill out some dsmp crossovers
Nah. Go pop off, Anon.
In a crossover where it's just dsmp and dc I can imagine all the dsmp characters just crawling out of the woodwork. Like they were on no one's radars then boom!
In some city in the middle of bumfuck nowhere Utah there's a power struggle between a guy in a mask and a guy that used to be a gas station attendant. A kid gets into a shootout with said masked guy over some discs. There's another power struggle over the mayoral election where the least batshit thing to happen was the fraud. There is a second, proper, revolution in which the sitting mayor gets assassinated and then replaced by a teenager. Bombings happen because the guy who used to be a gas station attendant lost his shit. The guy who worked with him to set up the bombs gets hunted down by the mayor and his associates and escapes persecution.
In the background, there's been a UFO crash, several meta humans and aliens and a faerie moving in like they've always been here. For a brief while a dude got possessed by Lady Death herself. They're married. The ex-mayor gets nukes. There is a huge fucking god just chilling in his appropriately massive home on the outskirts of town. There was an egg problem.
The alien assassin teen is also a landlord that threatens his tenants with arson and has his own Area 51 that links up to the sewers. The masked guy has a human mercenary working for him that got him thrown in prison after drawing the line at child murder. The prison has it's own fucking drama going on. There is a slime and a casino pops up.
And yet the residents look at the League like they're the ones being weird. This is just typical Tuesday shit, what rock have you been living under? lol

Biden turns 80 as election talk swirls (The Hill) Questions about Joe Biden’s age have loomed over his presidency ever since he entered the White House. On Sunday, Biden will reach a major milestone when he is expected to spend his 80th birthday quietly with his family, many of whom will be at the White House to mark another occasion: His granddaughter Naomi’s wedding. His rivals want to cast the president as lacking the energy and mental acuity needed for the job. While Biden takes flack for his age from the GOP, former President Trump is only four years younger and has announced a bid for reelection. Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) is 89. Ronald Reagan, who was 69 years old when he was sworn into his first term, was also faced with questions about his age, but turned it to his advantage. During one of the presidential debates with Mondale, Reagan said “I am not going to exploit, for political purposes, my opponent’s youth and inexperience.”
Western US cities to remove decorative grass amid drought (AP) A group of 30 agencies that supply water to homes and businesses throughout the western United States has pledged to rip up lots of decorative grass to help keep water in the over-tapped Colorado River. The agreement signed Tuesday by water agencies in Southern California, Phoenix and Salt Lake City and elsewhere illustrates an accelerating shift in the American West away from well-manicured grass that has long been a totem of suburban life, having taken root alongside streets, around fountains and between office park walkways. The grass-removal pledge targets turf that people don’t work on, like in front of strip malls, in street medians or at the entrance to neighborhoods. It doesn’t mean cities plan to rip up grass at golf courses, parks or in backyards, though some may pay homeowners to voluntarily replace their lawns with more drought-resistance landscaping.
Gang Warfare Cripples Haiti’s Fight Against Cholera (NYT) To reach the hospital, the mothers traveled the front lines of a gang war, bringing sick babies during lulls in gun battles and passing corpses along the way. They had no choice: Cholera, resurgent in Haiti, had come for their children. Cholera is soaring across the globe, as a record number of outbreaks have strained already reeling health systems in regions including Africa and South Asia. But cholera’s resurgence is a particularly cruel turn of fate in Haiti, which in February declared victory in eliminating the disease after battling it for more than a decade. Now, that triumph has been snatched away by the same forces plunging the nation into extraordinary depths of chaos and despair: armed groups that have turned vast swaths of the capital into lawless hellscapes of violence—and a government unable to take control. Now the health authorities cannot deliver the most basic care in poor neighborhoods where gangs have choked off access to the outside world, preventing doctors from entering and leaving the sick to die at home.
As Climate Protests Get Bolder, British Police Strike Back With New Powers (NYT) When environmental protesters recently stopped traffic on the M25 freeway that circles London, one journalist, Charlotte Lynch, was standing on a bridge above reporting on the latest of the group’s disruptive demonstrations for her radio station, LBC. But not for long. Ms. Lynch was swiftly handcuffed, searched and arrested after being questioned by two police officers about how she knew that the demonstration was taking place. Ms. Lynch said that she had shown a press card carried by journalists in Britain to identify themselves to the police, and explained that she had learned about where the protest would be held from social media. Nonetheless, she was held for five hours at a police station, where her DNA was collected and fingerprints were taken. As environmentalists and climate change activists ratchet up their protests in Britain, the authorities are responding in kind with robust actions that have raised concerns that long-enshrined freedoms are being eroded. Determined to crack down on the demonstrators, the government is giving the police new powers to tackle groups that have brought busy highways to a standstill, delayed infrastructure projects by tunneling beneath them, thrown soup at artwork and deflated the tires of SUVs. “What I’m seeing now is, I think, a sort of spiral—I’d almost say a radicalization,” said Adam Wagner, a civil liberties lawyer and author. “I think there’s a hardening on both sides—the police and the protesters—both of the actions and the reactions. I can see that dynamic and I’m pretty worried about it.”
As the War Rages, Ukraine Wages a Daunting Battle to Rebuild (NYT) Ukrainian efforts to stabilize some of the country’s battered electricity supply and make a dent in the seemingly endless task of demining swaths of the country offered a glimpse into the Herculean task that lies ahead off the battlefield. For the first time since Moscow this past week carried out its largest assault on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, the national energy utility said on Saturday that it was again able to use planned, coordinated blackouts to keep the national grid stabilized rather than resorting to emergency power shutdowns. The first traces of power were also restored to the recently reclaimed southern city of Kherson, which was left without heat, running water and electricity by Russian troops, as they blew up and tore down critical infrastructure before retreating to territory east of the Dnipro River. Across fields strewn with mines and at power plants under the threat of Russian missiles, workers with the Ukrainian utility company, Ukrenergo, have raced to fix damage caused by attacks intended to heap suffering on the Ukrainian people. But repairs made this week can be destroyed by a new Russian assault the next. Ukraine’s government says that nearly half of Ukraine’s energy grid has been knocked out by recent Russian missile strikes. Kyiv also estimates that nearly 61,000 square miles of the country could be littered with land mines and other explosives. Some cities and towns lie in ruins.
Kyiv’s mayor: Extraordinary, in extraordinarily tough times (AP) The body armor propped against a radiator, ready for use, the spent shell casing adding to clutter on his desk, the boxing memorabilia and the sign asking visitors to leave firearms at his door: All shout that this is the office of an extraordinary mayor, in extraordinarily difficult times. And then there’s the plastic toy figure of a muscular boxer, with clenched fist raised—a reminder of how physically imposing, fearsome even, Vitali Klitschko was in his world title-winning, opponent-pummeling heavyweight boxing prime. As was also the case during his years as a professional prizefighter, the fight for survival he’s engaged in now is primal. But it’s more essential, too: To prevent power from going out entirely in his city of 3 million people, to ensure that families don’t freeze in the cold that winter’s onset is bringing, and to keep Ukraine’s hyper-digital capital hooked up to the outside world. In blacked-out Kyiv restaurants, diners feel their way through meals in near-darkness, served by waiters carrying candles. Residents wake in the dead of night—if that’s when it’s their turn to get a few hours of power again—to shower and do laundry. “Huge challenge,” Klitschko said.
Malaysia faces new crisis as poll delivers hung Parliament (AP) Malaysia tumbled into fresh political turmoil Sunday after a tightly contested general election delivered a hung Parliament with no clear winner and a surprising surge of support for an Islamist party. Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim’s reformist alliance secured the biggest gain with 82 out of 220 Parliamentary seats, but fell far short of a majority. Trailing close behind was former Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin’s Malay-based Perikatan Nasional, or National Alliance with 73 seats. Among other key election losers was two-time former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, who at 97 is leading a separate Malay movement. The outcome will now see horse-trading as both Muhyiddin and Anwar scramble to form the government.
For rivals Japan and China, the new space race is about removing junk (Washington Post) When China successfully towed a dead satellite into a “graveyard orbit” this year, it alarmed experts in Japan who have been trying to put their country at the forefront of the world’s expanding market in space-junk removal. Some interpreted the Chinese feat as a demonstration of an orbit-offensive capability—the ability to make unwelcome, close approaches to other satellites. The technology involved is a precursor to what Japan is racing to build. With commercial space activities taking off, the amount of junk orbiting the planet poses an increasing threat of collisions. Companies around the globe are working to develop the means to send this junk tumbling toward Earth so it will burn up in the extreme temperatures of reentry. No rules govern who is responsible for cleanup—or space-debris mitigation, as it is called—but Japan intends to play a key role in their development. The nation has stepped up cooperation with the United States in response to China’s growing space capabilities. Low Earth orbit is full of litter. Decades of exploration have left thousands of pieces of now-useless equipment and satellites that circle the planet at 17,500 miles an hour. Some are the size of a marble, others as big as a school bus.
Qatar to open Mideast’s first World Cup before leaders, fans (AP) Qatar prepared Sunday to open the Middle East’s first FIFA World Cup before global leaders and soccer fans now pouring into this energy-rich nation after being battered by a regional boycott and international criticism. Regardless of the outcome of Qatar versus Ecuador on the pitch, Doha already has drawn Saudi Arabia’s powerful Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to the opening ceremony and inaugural match of the tournament. That Prince Mohammed, whose nation had closed Qatar’s only land border to the world through the kingdom over a yearslong political dispute, will attend shows how far the rapprochement between the two nations has gone. Qatar’s state-run news agency announced Prince Mohammed’s presence in the country, as well as other world leaders. It said U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Senegalese President Macky Sall and Rwandan President Paul Kagame had arrived in Doha.
World’s longest-standing president seeks to extend 43-year rule (Reuters) Equatorial Guinea votes on Sunday in a general election in which President Teodoro Obiang Nguema, the world’s longest-standing president, is expected to extend his 43-year rule at the helm of the tiny oil-producing West African nation. Over 400,000 people registered to vote in the country of around 1.5 million. Voters will also cast ballots to elect 100 members of parliament for the lower house, 55 of the country’s 70 senators, and local mayors. Observers expect no surprises. The 80-year-old Obiang has always been elected with over 90% of votes in polls whose fairness international observers have questioned given longstanding complaints by rights groups over a lack of political freedom. Equatorial Guinea has had only two presidents since independence from Spain in 1968. Obiang ousted his uncle Francisco Macias Nguema in a coup in 1979.

Megan and Tess wandered around the new Selvadoradan Arts and Culture exhibit. The Selvadorada government and museum had worked with Casbah Gallery and had loaned out some totems, vases, glyphs, and statues.
Megan turned to Tess and was like ‘It’s so beautiful, Tessie.’ Tess smiled and was like ‘Is it cheesy if I say I kept getting distracted by you?’ Megan laughed and shook her head** but swooned a bit when Tess caressed her cheek. She was like ‘Okay, okay, we have to pick up Emily from your moms’ place* in two hours, let’s keep looking around.’ They finished the Selvadoradan exhibit, and wandered up to the upper levels, and were pleasantly surprised as they noticed a kid’s play/craft area. The sign said it was open from Tuesday to Friday, 4pm to 8pm and supervised by an arts and craft guide, and there was even a lounge area overlooking the room where parents could wait and view some artwork while keeping an eye on their kid(s). Tess suggested they bring Emily here one day so she could do some creative activities while she and Megan could grab some food and drinks from the outdoors patio and then come back to check up on Emily. Megan agreed after looking over some more information, and she and Tess started heading back down the stairs to catch a Smuber home.
