This is what I get to look at out the window. When I moved in that woodchip path was mud, there was a tangled stand of so many trees of heaven their (also tangled) roots put out enough poison to kill grass, both sides of the path (the far side is wildflowers now) AND the ledge within the retaining wall were overrun with dandelions, deadnettle, nettles, other broadleafs, bittercress, seafoam, and crabgrass, a thick tangle of blackberry canes hung off the fence on the other side of the chimney, that bush in the foreground was grown high enough to block the window, and the trees had a ton of thin, twisted, dead, witchy branches at window level and an overgrown carpet canopy up above blocking light and making the whole area look like a cartoon haunted forest.
But that allllll changed cuz of me!

Coffee Hour
Saturday, 12/17/2022, Tree Trimming
We are now eight days from Christmas. While many folks decorate far earlier than this (some as early as Halloween or the 4th of July), I’ve always preferred to do outside decorating right after Thanksgiving (or the nicest day after TG) and save the indoor decorating until a couple of weeks before Christmas. I am happy to report that everything is up, working, and looking properly Christmassy around here. Now, if I can just get my self into the holiday spirit. I just ain’t there, yet.

Bortles, my Stunt Double du Jour, heard his family was planning on trimming the Christmas tree this weekend, so he figured he would warm up by trimming his lawn.

I have to win the favor of the leathery man smacking his gum in front of me or the round confused man behind him. Either way, my odds aren’t great.
Does my experience working on cars really even make me look tough enough for these guys? Can they tell? I was passing months ago, but it’s hit or miss lately.
Two men behind me are performing a “bucket rescue.” I am intrigued, but I have no time to watch what they are doing.
The confused dude squinted at the laptop resting on the truck bed, “What’s a project that you are proud of within the last year?”
Fuck, IDK man. I’ve been waiting tables, changing oil, and learning about prehistoric humans for the past FEW years. Alright.
“The project I am most proud of was actually my most recent fix on my car. . . I recently replaced the uh. . . throttle body on my own car. It  took a long time to sand off the old gasket from the intake manifold, but installing the new part was a easy.” Good, good. You forgot the fucking name of the car part, but you demonstrated comprehensive knowledge on the car to make up for it. Nice, maybe I have a chance.
“What do you do to,” he stared at the screen of the laptop for a moment too long, “commit to safety in the workplace?”
This is definitely the determining question. “I used to refuse to work on cars that weighed more than 2.5 tons because the lifts we had were only rated for passenger cars and I’m the one that went under the car to change the oil. We didn't have lifts rated for trucks, and I would refuse to put them on the small lifts even when the service writers insisted.” Wow! A decent response? Maybe? We may never know.
“Alright Kai, we will be in touch with you in about a week probably.” I shook both their calloused hands and watched my feet take me away from the parking lot.
Great. Another failed job interview. I know I look twelve. . . but my hair isn’t even dyed and I looked presentable enough. Just small-bodied and skittish.
Several cars lift my gaze as they emerge from a blind corner. The Kirby figure dangling from my rearview mirror easily convinces me to hasten my pace towards my car. The warm cracked leather welcomes me as it folds unevenly under my slumped weight. It is difficult to pry my forehead from the steering wheel. But when I do I look to the sky. And in the foreground of the sky is a sign: “Lake Plark Plaza.” Amazing. This isn’t the backstory to my love of stealing street signs, but by god I wish it was.
