But it didn’t attack us as we’d been prepared for, all weapons ready. It stopped and turned looking to where it had come and as if on cue, a herd showed from behind that huge pile of wrecked cars. Like twenty, thirty of them. The dog, smart thing, didn’t bark again, just stood there nervously, pacing and looking around at the living people it had found.

“Let’s move!!” I yelled at all the others from where I was standing at the side of my car and moved to close the back door. Before I could, though, the dog had sprinted over, startling me like hell – damn, that was a big dog – and jumped into the car, crashing loudly against the inside of the opposite door.

With the herd coming I had no time to make any decision. I closed the back door, trapping the dog inside, and opened the driver’s, hopping in and turning on the car. I looked back over my shoulder to reverse the car and the dog was there, breathing hard with its tongue out.

Our five cars – including the truck with all the metal scraps and Morale’s white van – got out of the junkyard, the walkers nearly catching up, but we left them behind quickly. My heart was pounding; it all had happened do fucking fast! I had been sleeping, like, two minutes ago and now I was accelerating on the road back home with a huge, bulk gorgeous dog on the back seat.

“Holy fuck!” I let it out, and as if I was calling the dog, it placed its large head right by mine between the seats and started smelling my face. It had a terrible breath, seriously, but I did nothing, I let it smell me and it didn’t seem threatening. So as I drove I lifted a hand to it, letting it smell me there too. It did for a moment, then stopped, passed between the seats, flopped down the passenger seat and started panting with the tongue out, it’s face looking adorably like it was smiling.

“Well, hello!” I caught myself speaking sweetly to the bulk dog as I reached out to pet the large head. “How the hell did you end up here?”

If it had an owner, I was sorry, but there was no way I was going back there to look for someone. Too many walkers, I wasn’t endangering myself and my group to reunite a dog with its owner. But taking a better look at it, I saw it was muscular but simply because it was probably a trait of the breed, because I could see its ribs and how thin it was on the sides. When the Morales’ drove their van slowly to the corner so they could unpack the little belongings they had on the corner house, I sat on the steps of the house I’d been sharing with Merle, Michonne and Andrea to have something to eat. The dog sat right in front of me, never trying to take the food, but staring with huge puppy eyes, so I got back into the house to get her a bowl and in there I emptied two cans of tuna. Going back outside, I put it down and she tried to get to it immediately.

“Wait!” I told her and he stopped instantly, sat on her heels and looked up at me, expectantly. Uh, interesting. Whoever her tutor had been, she was a well-trained girl. I allowed her to eat after a second and she swallowed all the tuna in no more than two bites. Damn, it was gonna take a lot of food to maintain her. I decided to call her Honey because of her eyes, and because I had never seen a dog named Honey.

Now it’d been oven a month since she came home with us, since the Morales’ were here. With a group of eight, one elder and one dog, we were building a place to call home. The gate was functional, Morales had done an incredible job in partnership with Merle and Mikki, and now it was a tall, sturdy metal gate that slid sideways and had strong locks. Also, we’d built a wooden platform where we could climb up and watch the whole entrance and outside area, it was where people kept guard at all times in a scale.

After I filled Honey’s bowl with her dog food, I had a cup of unsweetened coffee and a bowl of oatmeal with raisins for breakfast, and was out of the house through the back door with the first day light. Honey took off to take her morning pee as I stood for a minute looking at the lake.

I had already picked my own house and was living alone there. Each one of us had our own space, except for Will and Mikki who shared the house with Ma, and the two Morales’. Across from them at the corner and by Merle’s, Michonne had picked hers. Andrea was her neighbor on that street, the one the circled the lake area. As for myself, I’d chosen a more isolated one. The street around the lake area was a big circle that covered most part of the community and returned to the corner of the main street. In it, a few small streets originated, little cul-de-sacs, and mine was at the very end of one of them, its back to the lake, lots of trees all around, and it was quiet. The house was a one bedroom, trailer like, the front door opened to a living room with a good couch. The living room was separated from the kitchen by a small counter, this was also small but had lots of cabinets, and I had gas and running water. By the kitchen there was a small 4 seat table. Ahead there was a tiny corridor with a door to the bathroom and another to the bedroom, which took the entire back area of the house. A double bed, a dresser and a wall mirror, and that was all. It was smaller than the one I’d live in for so many years in Savannah, but it was better. It was mine.

Honey came back to me after doing her morning routine and after a pet on her large head – the girl had been gaining weight and now looked even stronger than she did before; she surely was intimidating - I started my morning walk. The Village needed a population, needed more people to work on the land and the security and on building up for the future.

We all had well defined jobs. Morales was responsible for planning and executing constructions. He’d made the gate, the platform, was working on the chicken coop, and he’d been drawing the plan for build a brick wall around the Village, just inside of the hedges. He had help of all others to perform the constructions.

Miranda, the sweet, God sent woman, had nursing experience and she was taking care of everyone’s health. Every other day one of us would get hurt by something and the was the one to take care. She took inventory of the medicine we brought home, controlled stock, cleanliness, she’d medicate and bandage us and even the dog, who once got a huge splinter on her paw and needed care. And he was good, I don’t think he’d ever known he could be good at something like this. Even with all things considered, back in the previous life Merle would have been a hell of a good cop if he’d wanted to. He took care of the watch schedules – always one person up the platform and another circling the inside of the Village’s hedges in three-hour shifts – and the organization, maintenance and stock of all weapons. He also went out once a week to go hunting and sometimes stayed out for as long as two days, and would rarely come back without any meat for us all.

Andrea was a valuable assistant to various parts. She helped Miranda at the infirmary when it was needed, then helped Merle with the planning for security, then Morales with the projects, and she even helped keep to take care of Ma – who was now believing she was her daughter and adored her company. Also, surprisingly, Andrea was the best cook among all of us, although Miranda was great competition, and she was getting a taste in cooking family meals for everyone every now and then.

Michonne took care of the runs. She was always out there, she’d decorated the area maps in her head and would show me all her plans for runs, telling me exactly where she’d be and where she was planning to go next. Someone would always go with her for safety and so they’d be able to carry more stuff. She always brought the most different sorts or cargo. There was a maximum security prison nearby, just around 9 miles away through the main roads that Michonne wanted to go take a look. She’d seen it from far and it was totally infested by walkers. Her brother Will could never get involved in too much because he was the primary care taker of their elder mother, but he did take guarding shifts at the platform, sometimes went out with Michonne on runs and helped the others on small necessary things.

And as for myself… I was the leader. I knew how to do everything the others did, and what I hadn’t known, I was learning. I made the decisions and gave orders and approved or disapproved ideas, and they all heard me. These days, however, almost thirty-four weeks pregnant, I was slowing down, even though I didn’t want to. I got tired easily, my back hurt, the heartburns were killing me and my feet looked like loaves of bread in the end of the day. I did not let go of my crossbow, though. Never.

I’d had no experience with dogs at all, so it couldn’t be a talent of mine. I was sure Honey had belonged to someone who’d trained her before, so she was used to commands and following them. She’d chosen me to be her leader now, and I adored it. Honey was a huge, muscular American Bully, absurdly smart and a total sweetheart. Now I was with her near the lake among the trees testing a few commands. She was playing around, sniffing trees and stuff, and I gave her two short, quick sharp whistles. She immediately ran to my side and stopped there, facing the same way I was. Then I pointed to the ground, leaning down just a bit, which made her lie down. Then I walked away and she stayed, eyes always on me, but unmoving. I gave her the two whistles again and she ran to my side. Such a good girl!

My radio came to life on my waistband just then, static preceding the message.

“Goldilocks, I need ya at the gate pronto,” it was Merle’s voice. “We got company,” I was already moving, Honey on my heels, as he continued. “Hell, gotta have ya’ll nearby just in case.”

I took the last few yards by running and quickly climbed up the platform where Merle was planted, looking outside. Sure enough, there was a group of four men outside, ragged and thin as all of us still living people must look like these days.

“What you want?” I asked instantly, observing each of them.

“It’s Charlie, ma’am,” he said humbly. “These are Tom, Phil and Nick.”

“Where ya coming from?”

Charlie took it, placed it on the floor and opened it, his companions coming to look over his shoulder.

And then I was getting carried away, people were screaming all around me but I didn’t hear a word, the world around me a blur of color and sound, but nothing was felt anymore, just the cold, solid terror for by baby.

Then I was in a high bed and Miranda and Andrea were all over me checking the stab, trying to figure where it had hit me, if the baby was fine. I could barely breath, waiting for a signal that it was all fine because if it wasn’t I would ever breathe again.

Time had no measure anymore because it felt like an eternity and like just a few seconds until they decided it hadn’t hit me anywhere vital nor on the baby. I have no idea how they got to that conclusion, but then they were taking the knife off and it hurt like a motherfucker, making me scream and try to get away, but hands of other people kept holding me know, saying it would be fine, calm down, but I was out of my mind in pain and still shocked and panicking from the stab.

Merle was there, holding my face in his hands, and told me firmly that I was fine, wasn’t too hurt and that the baby was fine. The baby’s fine, he repeated over and over, trying to get to my head, Slowly, he did and I stopped struggling, letting Miranda and Andrea work cleaning and stitching the cut, that apparently had only been superficial.

Apparently I had turned quickly enough, after all.

I kept repeating it like a mantra in my mind, I’m fine, the baby’s fine, but convincing my body was another whole thing. Things were calmer around me again, everyone relieved it hadn’t been bad, when the first pain came. I doubled over, sitting up and then the panic around started again, nobody understood what was happening.

Miranda said it could be just a natural reaction of my body to the stress, that I needed to calm down, relax, get it past, get some sleep, and it might be over, but I’d need to be closely observed so someone would stay with me tonight. I was taken back home and my sisters started taking shifts watching me, and I knew even when one of them wasn’t there, they weren’t sleeping. Michonne, Andrea and Merle were around all the time, watching me as pain after pain it came back, never fading, just getting closer together. Miranda came back when it was clear it was not just a stressful reaction.

I was in labor.

Painful, sharp contractions every fifteen minutes, and then every ten. At less than eight months of pregnancy. No, no, no… Too soon! To fucking soon. But they kept coming, and Miranda checked me and… God, the worry in her eyes when she removed her hand from me. There was fear and sadness there when she told me I was getting dilated, ready for birth.

I was in early labor.

He was coming. The baby was coming and he wasn’t ready, I knew he wasn’t ready. He’d gone through too much, he needed as much time inside as he could have to be ready to be born, he could not come out now. He wasn’t ready, please, please, he ain’t ready!

Michonne didn’t leave anymore. She sat with me in bed, held my hand, and didn’t leave me alone for any second. Right there too, was Honey, lying on the mattress with me and whining, knowing something was wrong. When the pain was gone she’d come near for me to pet her, trying to give me some comfort.

I was incoherent, my thoughts all over the place and in a pain I hadn’t imagined. I hadn’t allowed myself to think about labor because I was scared of it. With no resources, no medications, no hospital, anything could go wrong, so I just avoided thinking of it. And it was all happening now.

Merle came and went, pacing all over the house and around it, but when my contractions seemed to never go away anymore and Miranda measured me again, he stayed. It was time. My boy was coming. Merle sat behind me to keep me propped up and Michonne held my hand and encouraged me. I sweat, screamed, hit Merle’s legs and squeezed Michonne’s fingers and cursed with all the words I knew.

It took no more than three hours from the first pain to the moment he came out. He came out. My baby was born. Miranda held him, cleared his airways, pat his back and got him to finally, finally, God, whimper.

He didn’t cry. He whimpered.

Miranda lifted him and showed him to us all. My boy… He was so small, so tiny, a wrinkled little thing and he was whimpering, his little chest working hard, trying, trying so hard… I reached out for him and she handed him over. I rested him on my chest, liquid and blood all over and someone placed a sheet on top of him…

And I cried. I cried because I knew.

I had a baby and he was right here, real, he existed. I looked down at him, his little face, held his tiny hand between the tips of my fingers and spoke to him, rocking back and forth. Merle got up from behind me and was looking at the baby and at me and Michonne was crying by my side, but I didn’t look at anyone, I didn’t lift my sight from him even for a second.

I looked at him for his entire life.

I kissed his head, is hands, I talked to him. I love you, my angel. You’re loved. You’re beautiful. My little angel, my precious little boy. I love you so, so much…

I held him in my arms during his entire life.

I had suffered and cried painfully many times in my life. Many times in the past few months. But nothing had ever, nor ever would again, hurt this much. Nothing had ever hurt and would never hurt me as much as the second I realized, a couple of hours later, that he wasn’t there anymore. That he’d stopped breathing, losing the fight.

He fought. He fought hard, my brave little warrior. He fought his entire life. He was held and loved for his entire life.

* * *

Mich and Andrea washed me like they’d do to a baby. I was limp, just letting them. The cleaned me, dressed me, took me to bed. I don’t think it was my bed, it was some other one, but it didn’t matter. I didn’t care, I fell asleep.

Woke up to Miranda checking on me and Merle making me drink some water. He said something, I didn’t register. Woke up again to Michonne petting my hair, saying I had to eat something. Woke up again to Honey licking my hand, trying to get me up. Woke up again to Andrea forcing spoons of broth on me. Woke up again feeling I needed to pee. Woke up again when I peed all over myself. Woke up when they took me to shower again.

No matter how much I wished I wouldn’t, I kept waking up.

It was hell, I didn’t want to wake up anymore. I don’t know what day it was, how long it’d been, I just knew he wasn’t there anymore.

He was nowhere, he was not inside my womb, he was not in my arms.

What was I even alive for?

About Mimeosomes

Everyone who’s played through the main story knows the basics: Mimeosomes were designed to bridge the unknown amount of time it would take humanity to find a new habitable planet. This way, people wouldn’t grow old and be able to maintain the White Whale and protect the Lifehold. We know that they are artificial in nature and that they are controlled from the consciousness stored within the Lifehold.

Elma mentions in one of the chapters (l can’t remember which one rn, but if someone requests it I will look it up) that the Lifehold cannot be too far, since they would otherwise feel the lag. Considering how the player can move freely all around Mira it is suffice to say that while the Lifeholds transmission range is limited, it is nonetheless still huge. Like, encompassing a whole planet huge.

(Though, this observation might be futile since the endgame reveals that humanity would have been dead all along, so Mira Magic prevents us from making a sensible estimate as to how far this range could have been.)

What the main story chapters don’t tell us are the little details: can mimeosomes get sick, do they need food, etc.

So here is what I found:

Right off the bat: Mimeosomes have organic components. It is why in the sidequest “Lakeside Getaway” the cantors are able to exterminate the workers there, as they had laid eggs inside their bodies. We also see symptoms of sickness in Ajoa (the NPC who either dies or survives depending on your choices) because of that.

Despite that, other NPCs tell us that a mimesome doesn’t experience allergies and that they keep the humans safe from germs and contaminations which means they can’t get sick.

I’ve seen other speech bubble dialogue pop up when you walk past NPCs, talking about the ration bars BLADE use when they are out in the field (unfortunately I didn’t take screenshots at the time because I didn’t think I’d make a blog with all that neat trivia. They didn’t say anything important, just talked about the taste of these things).

If they didn’t need to eat at all, I figure they’d just pass on eating while they are on a mission since it’s just additional hassle – which is why I believe that (part, if not all) those organic components make up the digestive system. A lot of parasites do settle in the intestines, so I feel this is most likely the case.

Other neat things I found:

We know that mimeosomes are supposed to mimic the actual human as close as possible when it comes to looks, but there are a few NPCs that tell us that there is a bit of leeway included when it comes to outer appearance.

Hair, for example, can be easily swapped out (or in Felice’s case replaced), so there don’t seem to be any restrictions on hairstyle and color. Used to have straight hair and want curls now? Apparently no problem.

In the same dialogue Dorothy tells us that ‘bells and whistles’ is stuff like less weight, get rid of scars, beer bellies, etc. (I really wish I had screenshotted that latter part too, but again, I didn’t think I’d make a blog with this. I tried talking to her again, but I had cleared a chapter or the main story even and the dialogue didn’t pop up again.)

So from how I understand it: As long as it doesn’t concern one’s facial features (you know, that thing that makes a person actually recognizable, like eyes, nose, mouth, jawline, etc. you are good to go. Height, I assume, is one of them. Not sure on eye color, since technically there do exist contact lenses that change eye color) one is free to do whatever they want. Make oneself skinnier, get rid of wrinkles, whatever comes to mind.

And it kinda makes sense, really. The higher-ups would know that people would never get their old bodies back and start over with newly created ones, so things like scars or overweight and other stuff one did to their body (surgeries and tattoos included) wouldn’t carry over anyway. The new body would be a blank slate in regards to that.

Other bits of trivia:

Another NPC says that one can regulate the growth of their hair and nails, even shut it off completely if they so wish.

(Unfortunately I do not have a screenshot and I don’t remember which NPC that was, so until I go through the game again and actually find it, take this one with a grain of salt.)

One of the NPCs in front of the mimeosome maintenance center (Kent D. Carr) says that sensory impressions like taste are just data that one could easily recreate by uploading them in the mimeosome maintenance center. Which means that any kind of sensation can be recreated as long as it is in the database. (I assume this doesn’t only apply to the taste of say, chocolate cake, but also touch or maybe even visual recreation of something.)

I find it very interesting that this is even possible to do, since mimeosomes can eat and taste well enough to differentiate tastes (if they didn’t why would fellow BLADEs gush about Lin’s food or complain about the taste of the ration bars. And Lin has this whole thing in one of the official short stories where she complains about the canteen food on the White Whale). I guess it is still different from the real thing. Or maybe this is to preserve the taste of food one can’t get on Mira anymore. All human food is synthesized after all and in no way ‘natural’, so it wouldn’t possibly taste the same.

(I actually do have a screenshot of this buuuuuut it’s in German and I took it with my phone because I couldn’t connect the Wii U with the internet at the time. If anyone wishes to see it, I will gladly upload it though.)

The blood substitute is called “biocirculatory plasma”

This is said by Lin in Ch. 5 after Cross gets their arm blown off (screenshot available, but I didn’t deem it necessary to add as it’s a mainstory cutscene). Not exactly missable, but thought I’d throw it in here in case someone needs it for fanfiction or anything. The plasma is also blue, not red, as implicated by the following things:

a.) Mimeosomes are called Blue Bloods in Japanese

b.) After the attack on NLA (Ch. 8) there are NPC who do express their surprise at the humans being blue blooded/mimeosomes.

c.) This picture:

The plasma also has to circulate somehow inside the body so it’s not a stretch to assume that mimeosomes have an artificial heart that acts as pump.

Ch. 5 also shows that mimeosomes can be shut down to prevent pain or further plasma loss. It is also possible to just turn off the pain response and stay conscious (I think this was said in the Sylvalum mission “Predator and Prey”).

Mimeosomes are able to feel some sort of “reverse phantom pain”, i.e. feeling the (partial) lack of a body part even though it’s connected and up and running. This is also part of Ch. 5 after the player awakens in the maintenance center and is asked if they feel okay. One of the options leads to this bit of trivia.

An extra bonus:

The name mimeosome may come from the Greek μνήμη (mnimi, pronounced as mnee-mee)) and σώμα (soma). Minimi means memory and soma body so the word would basically translate to memory body. And that’s kina dope.

Not sure if this is right, obviously, the “mimeo” might be latin or some shit (or ancient Greek which is NOT the same, lemme tell you, as a native Greek speaker) and just mean mimic (as in mimic the human body), but, oh well.

Edit:

So, someone in the tags said that “Blue Bloods�� is a term used in Japan to describe the rich and exempt (makes sense, here in Germany the nobility used to be referred to as such as well because the veins look blueish against pale skin. And back then pale skin meant you didn’t bust your ass open working in the fields), so basically sth among the lines of “rich and lucky ones” which is a neat bit of foreshadowing that got lost in translation. (I know who you are but since this was just tag-rambling I figured you might wanna keep your name outta this - if not, I can edit your name into the post.)

They also wondered how tf this mix of organic and mechanic components would even work; now, I don’t think the game is ever going to give us an actually coherent and scientifically sound explanation for that - I think they most likely settled on bullet points of what mims can/can’t do to keep things consistent (bc one would need not only a medical, but also a scientific and engineering degree to have a good grasp of everything and I’m sure af the developers didn’t study up THAT meticulously on this), but I was thinking about it, bc ya know, I studied biophysics and find this kinda stuff interesting af.

And then I remembered that one of the research groups at my university studies the interaction between organic molecules and solid surfaces.

This kind of research can be used to get new insights on how those molecules function, and also helps developing better prostheses (in regards to biocompatibility) - obviously they aren’t trying to make artificial organs or anything related to mimeosomes, but it IS a pretty big field afaik.

Organic molecules can be viruses or bacteria for examples - and bacteria are a very important part of our intestinal flora.

So, what if a mimeosome’s intestinal tract is made out of a material that those kinda bacteria can thrive on? (It can’t be cells imo, bc human cells have to replace themselves very regulary. Intestinal cells get replaced every 2 - 4 days for example - and making use of life cells that need renewal seems to defeat the purpose of almost-immortal machines since the point was to live in and with them as long as possible as it was unclear when they’d find a new planet to settle on.) Gut flora can digest carbohydrates and certain sugars, so there is a starting point as to how mims could digest food. These bacteria can’t break down everything, but it is common practice in life sciences to use bacteria as hosts to express certain enzymes (even though they weren’t native in that bacterium before), so engineering bacteria that could digest all kinds of food doesn’t seem like too much of a stretch to me.

Ogata’s behaviour is contradictory during the course of the hunt for the gold. Why?

In light of the recent events in the Karafuto arc, we readers witnessed the full meltdown of Ogata on the ice flow from chapters 185-188. One of the first things that comes to many people’s minds was “Why did Ogata give up so easily? Kiro is fighting to his very last breath and Ogata just rolled over.”.

These are my thoughts on why Ogata oscillates between caring about himself and behaving recklessly.

Warning, this is not my usual style for this meta post. Sometimes I get a bit personal to explain things.

So what is a good way to approach Ogata’s varied behaviour’s throughout the series? I decided to make a several categories and then list various instances when he behaved in certain ways. Please keep in mind that this is not meant to be a comprehensive list. I’m sure I could add more but these are really all of the major points that stand out to me.

Below are the following three categories:

There are times were he accepts his fate that he could die:

1.) When Sugimoto breaks his arm and has him pinned down.

2.) When he gets shot in the arm in Barato and falls off the fire/bell tower.

3.) When he gets pinned down and beaten by the unknown 27th division solider in Edogai’s house.

4.) When he eggs Asirpa on to shoot him with the arrow.

These are times when he behaves in a risky fashion indicating that he has little concern for his life:

1.) Standing up when he reveals his position to Tanigaki knowing it is a trap.

2.) Setting the herring mansion on fire to find the hidden skin.

3.) The sniper battle with Vasily where he uses himself as bait.

These are times where he behaves in a cautious way or fights to live:

1.) Poking Sugimoto in the eyes to escape being pinned down and running away with the broken arm after Asirpa saves him.

2.) Shoot out with Tsurumi and the 27th after Tanigaki shot him.

3.) Fight with Tsukishima in Edogai’s.

4.) Escaping the coal mine with the miners in Yuubari.

5.) Figuring out the fake Ainu in the Silent Kotan arc.

6.) Pretty much anytime he goes hunting for the greater group.

7.) Shooting the deer on the mountain pass, saving the entire group from hypothermia.

8.) Bringing his rifle into the bath area of the onsen.

If we look at all of these different events Ogata switches back and forth between fighting for his survival in life threatening situations, to acting recklessly, to just accepting his fate that he is about to be killed. So why would Ogata be swinging between these different extremes in regards to his actions in life threatening situations?

I think it is safe to say that based on Ogata’s life experiences is a very hurt and damaged individual who has pushed his emotions and feelings aside so that he could cope during his childhood. He then brought these habits into adulthood and has never faced them or would think about learning how to heal from all of this psychological trauma. Ogata has a very low opinion of himself, he sees himself as an individual missing something and that he likely wonders why he exists when he was born into a crappy family situation. He likely thinks, “Why was I born into a place where I was not wanted?”. He’s been rejected by his mother as she hopes his father will return for her, not for them. He is rejected by his father who thinks he was disgusted by his mother and that’s the only time that we know where he comes clean about his actions to someone besides Asirpa on the ice flow. He confesses the truth to Hanazawa in a long monologue and Hanazawa calls him a monster. He then confesses the truth to Asirpa in another monologue and she can only simply say that she won’t kill him despite his confession.

We know that he was bullied for his personal background. He likely put on airs that it didn’t bother him in the 27th, but the bullying likely hurt him a lot. The fact that Koito talks about his background and adds in that he didn’t like his attitude makes me think that members of the 27th got meaner to him when they couldn’t illicit a rise out of him as he coped by pretending to not care of it didn’t matter. I think Ogata was one of those people that “bothered” other people just by being himself and it made everyone meaner to him.

Since the beginning, he has always tried to project an air of self confidence when interacting with others and as long as he has had his rifle [security blanket]. These actions helped him as a defense mechanism and prevented others from getting close to him. But based on everything that we know by this point in the manga, it is safe to conclude that he suffers from depression and likely has suicidal tendencies. His suicidal tendencies are not in the context that he wants to kill himself but that he is more than okay with someone else killing him in particular instances. He doesn’t value his life highly b/c he thinks no one cares about him at the moment. We know he was loved by his grandma b/c she brought him and his mother home and that shows that grandma Ogata was a strong woman but she wasn’t able to raise him the same way that a mother and father could.

So, let’s go with the idea that Ogata is suffering from depression; is there a way that we could explain his moodiness/shifts in how he feels about himself throughout the story to date?

Depression impacts different people different ways, so there is no universal way to categorize these things. A reader can only approach understanding a character such as Ogata from that reader’s own experiences in life.

My personal hypothesis is:

Ogata is a high functioning individual with severe depression in addition to having a fear of rejection and intimacy with occasional suicidal tendencies.

Why do I propose this hypothesis?

Based on my own life experiences.

And this is where writing this meta hits close to home so to speak. I will do my best to try to explain things, as I’ve been thinking about how to approach this topic in the most careful way possible. I keep coming back to the only way I can understand Ogata, is by connecting my own experiences with what I see his character doing.

I suffer from depression and I will deal with it my whole life. I once had a friend who doesn’t suffer from it ask me “When will you get better?”; I struggled to explain to her that you don’t get better. You just always have it present in your life. My personal experience has been you swing between times when it is laying low and you don’t really notice or feel it. Other times you are stuck in the mire of it; you spend half your time wondering if you should try to pull yourself out or just sit there waiting for it to lift.

Ogata’s depression:

When I’m severely depressed several things happen; 1.) My moods shift between feeling numb where I don’t feel much of anything or having strong mood swings where I’m very excitable and agitated to becoming view sad or angry. 2.) As a result I may become very fixated on certain things and be exceptionally productive at work and get lots of stuff done. On the flip side, I may have to force myself to do simple tasks outside of everything but work. Medically speaking, I am a high functioning person with depression; my work either continues as expected or my productivity goes up as a way to avoid thinking about anything else. Most people won’t even notice that i’m depressed.

This type of behavior is okay in the short term, it allows you to maintain the status quo but it is not sustainable. And this is where Ogata’s behaviours make a lot of sense to me. When Ogata is working towards a goal (usually sniping/mission related) he is at his absolute best, he’s brought his “A” game and he will do whatever it takes e.g. rescuing Tanigaki before the end of the 3 day time limit, allowing the team to rescue Shiraishi and survive crossing over the mountain pass, giving the group the upper hand at the onsen by having a firearm within reach. But he’s able to do this when he feels like he can do this or this is a good distraction from thinking about other things. Likely, at other points, he’s in this weird state where you are numb, you are somewhat engaged but you really don’t care about what happens to you . . . it is hard to describe but it has a certain feeling of being detached from what is happening around you even though you are involved in it. Sorry, I can’t explain this any better . . .

In my experience being depressed isn’t a constant state, you move between different feelings and depending on where you are at you will react differently. This makes so much sense as we see Ogata responding to similar situations e.g. life threatening ones in such different ways. Sometimes he just lays there and takes it, sometimes he gambles (with his life) for a huge gain, and other times he’s hyper conservative and cautious doing whatever it takes to survive.

When he gambles with his life, I often wonder if he gets an adrenaline rush? When this happens, he perhaps feels more alive than normal and it temporally pulls him out of a more depressed state or it makes him feel more than normal.

Ogata’s fear of rejection and intimacy:

The second aspect of Ogata is that he has an extreme fear of rejection by others. This came from several different conversations on Discord as well as general observations of his behaviors. In the context of the manga, it fits in with the theme that he is seen as a scammer and a betrayer. He betrays Tsurumi and the 27th with Tamai and Co. He betrays Hijikata (who used Sugimoto and Shiraishi as bait) and Sugimoto by shooting him at Abarashi. But another way to look at this is he was always afraid of being rejected and replaced.

He’s bounced between all of these different groups and factions. This gives us insight into the fact that in part he’s looking for a place to belong with good leadership/mentor/father figure, some rifle nerd friends and maybe just some friends. But he’s likely afraid that he will find people he likes and if he likes them he’s terrified that they will reject him. The 27th already rejected him when he was in it with the yamaneko nickname/bullying. He’s likely afraid of being rejected and bullied b/c his previous experiences have trained him to trust no one.

So he does two major behaviors to avoid rejection; 1.) he keeps his distance [aloofness] 2.) he’s sarcastic and sassy to make it look like he isn’t hurt or offended. We see the best example of his distance when he is forced to join Sugimoto and Asirpa’s groups both times. He serves the important function of picking up the rear which is a protective position but also allows him to hang back and disengage. So he is protecting the group, but he’s also protecting his own personal space and isolation. He tries his hardest to not participate in the group despite Asirpa’s repeated guilt trips to say “citatap” and “hinna”. To really make sure others don’t get close to him, he makes sarcastic remarks or may blurt out an honest or truthful statement in a blunt way but almost expects to get ignored or is so used to being ignored he figures he might as well say it.

When Sugimoto singles him out during the last supper at Edogai’s house, he deflects Sugimoto’s statement in a very over the top fashion for him. He usually makes minimal facial expressions or hand motions but there he completely hams it up. My only explanation for his behavior is that he is hurt by Sugimoto’s statement so he instead tries to use his sass and sarcasm deflect that pain.

Ogata’s fear of rejection makes a lot of sense to me; I have struggled with relationships over the years. I was a victim of bullying when I was younger and used the similar approach of sarcasm or the idea that it just didn’t bother me which only inspired people to bully me further. It creates a tough situation, you try to ignore the pain but people get egged on and then try to push you further. Sadly, I my current job has a lot of bullying and I find myself trying to cope with all of these things by myself with little support. I think since I see many aspects of my life in Ogata’s own, that as I read chapters 164, 165 and 169, I cried b/c the pain he was feeling was all too real. Why? Because all of the members of the 27th are adults. You aren’t children or students anymore you are adults and these adults are bullying each other in the workplace, in the case of Golden Kamuy, the military. But when you are so used to being on guard to bullying that you push everyone away. And when you push everyone away you begin to reject others before they can reject you b/c it is safer. Is this a good idea in the long run? Oh hell no. But is it safe and comfortable to do? Oh hell yes.

So, there is more than enough evidence that Ogata has been bullied and he is so afraid of rejection that he tries to disconnect from everyone else in the 27th. And this is where the complication comes in with Yuusaku trying to form a friendship with Ogata. When Yuusaku tries to connect with him, he rejects him without realizing it. Ogata tells him how he copes with killing in a truthful and honest statement; that “he doesn’t feel pain”. We know that he does feel pain but his survival mechanism is to push it down and tell himself he doesn’t feel anything. Plus, if he is depressed than he likely does have much more numbed feelings. [Again, this is where my personal experience is being applied to Ogata.] I still get really emotional when i re-read the scene between Yuusaku and Ogata. Yuusaku wants to connect with Ogata; Ogata sees the hypocrisy of what Hanazawa expects from Yuusaku. Fearlessly inspire young men into battle, but, leave those soldiers to deal with the after effects of the trauma of warfare. Even though Ogata says he doesn’t feel anything, the fact that he sees the contradiction in Yuusaku implies that he knows he’s in pain too but he just can’t see it or refuses to acknowledge it. So to have Yuusaku try to comfort him by stating that “people like that [you] simply can’t exist.” is an inadvertent/accidental way where he rejects Ogata’s survival method at this point in time.

But it makes a lot of sense that Ogata saw a child of a father who had certain expectations and ambitions for a “chosen” offspring. He thinks that Asirpa was set up to be a flag bearer for the Ainu and other native people’s independence movement.

But the problem is that Ogata started to care about Asirpa as a person and see her as someone who might be his friend. I think he saw her crush on Sugimoto as something that could develop into how his mother felt about Hanazawa so he does his “best” to persuade her from crushing on him further. He also got mothering from her, letting her spoon feed him on numerous occasions and accept all of the birds he shot for dinner her to prepare.

So now Asirpa is the person who has a weird combination of traits of the mother he never had and the purity of his brother. Therefore, all of these emotions mixed up would be confusing for anyone. Asirpa is a person who hasn’t judged him, has said nice things about him and he has repaid her kind behaviours with his own polite ones back e.g. citatap and hinna only loud enough for her to hear. Ogata is a straightforward character. If someone does something for him, he will return the favor (even if Sugimoto doesn’t know that he saved his life).

But I’m talking about how Ogata has a fear of rejection; how does this fit in with Asirpa? This fits in perfectly with what happened between the two of them. Ogata figures out that Asirpa knows what the code is. He likely has decided that this will be the test of their relationship. If she trusts him and accepts him, she will give him the code willingly. This might be the first time that he feels accepted by another person. Why does this happen now?

Because he knows that Sugimoto is alive and if Asirpa knows that he is alive, Ogata is terrified that she will abandon and reject him to return to Sugimoto.

Over the course of several chapters he first tries to get Asirpa to tell him the code b/c he wants some of the gold and that he isn’t greedy. This line of reasoning isn’t good enough, so he then omits some of the details to tell her that Kiro is the one who lead to Wilk being shot but he wasn’t directly involved. But during this whole time Ogata loses his normally cool and rational behaviour and begins to become very upset and panicked as Sugimoto gets closer. This is what leads him to make up his almost believable lies but he pushes it too far. He had all of the elements he needed to sway her, he had enough information but at some point he added in his own wishes and desires for himself/his parents and it creates a ball of emotional confusion. And that ball of emotional confusion is his undoing. Asirpa figures out that he’s lying and just like Yuusaku, she reacts in what is the worst way possible for Ogata. She tells him that she can’t believe anything about him and doesn’t trust him at all.

And that ladies and gentlemen, is the point where he snaps.

At some point during his panic to try go get Asirpa to tell him the code to find the gold, he went from caring about getting the code and the gold, to getting Asirpa to tell him the code b/c he wanted her to trust and accept him. Or maybe this happened earlier on Karafuto after his fever dream or at some point during their travels. Maybe this was after the encounter with the lynx.

The meaning of all of this is that when Ogata is asking Asirpa to give him the code, he changed it from being about the gold to being about Asirpa trusting and accepting him as friend and person.

With the above premise, it means that Asirpa telling him that he’s a liar and she doesn’t know him at all is the absolute rejection of him. He just heard what everyone in the 27th said when he was bullied. And then he snaps, that’s it. He’s been rejected yet again and he then blurs Yuusaku and Asirpa where as he begins to confess to Asirpa he has another monologue and turns Yuusaku’s words against Asirpa [and Yuusaku] there as he is all but begging her to kill him. Ogata is a complete mess by this point, his emotions are all over the place, he’s not sure what he wants, he’s in pain, he’s panicked, he’s hurt, he’s confused, and it was all the result of Asirpa not trusting him. All of their bonding was for nothing, he is worthless as a person and he just gives up . . .

This all makes sense b/c for the entire series Ogata has been seeking someone to accept and love him [not romantic love, familial]. Asirpa was his first chance to maybe feel this and it turned out all wrong. Somewhere in Ogata’s mind he keeps telling himself he doesn’t deserve this because he’s broken. You can’t connect with people because there is something wrong with you. Not Sugimoto, not Kiro, not Tanigaki, not Koito but you, Ogata Hyakunosuke.

With that rejection he just gives up and is so depressed and desperate that he wants her to kill him.

By realizing that all Ogata wanted was for someone to care about him, it makes so much sense that at this point in the story he just gave up.

He’s reached rock bottom with his depression.

He feels so worthless and terrible that it just doesn’t matter anymore, he can’t see anything, he’s in shock. He’s suicidal b/c nothing matters.

More importantly, he’s exhausted himself from trying to cope all of these years and not having a healthy way to deal with his pain and emotions. Everything he has been trying to avoid has caught up to him in the worst way possible.

So returning to the original question; why did Ogata give up so easily? He lost the reason and will that he had to care to keep fighting. It all makes sense to me - when you try to use a short term coping mechanism and you carrying it far into adulthood it isn’t a matter of if will it catch up to you. It is a matter of when it will catch up to you.

Thanks for indulging me, but sorry it took me 90 years to get to it. ;P I made it extra long to remind you of the good ol’ days!!!

Kent/Lyn:

12. who do they confide in when shit hits the fan (besides each other)?

I feel like Lyn is the kind of person to have multiple go-to people, depending on the situation at hand.

She strikes me as an understanding and accommodating friend: there are some things that she just wouldn’t burden Florina with/that Florina might not be comfortable with discussing. Rank probably matters a little bit, here, because some issues don’t leave the room (or at least they stay only with the people in the room), like state secrets or the equivalent, but Florina’s perfect for regular friendship things (especially softer emotional discussions), reminiscing about the good old days, and some good old-fashioned harmless venting.

For angry venting, there’s always Sain and Wil. Sain is the right choice if she wants someone to get angry with her—you know, the supportive angry rant-with-you kind of friend who echoes your sentiment and allows you to have a dialogue with emotion! Wil is best if she wants a more neutral opinion/listener who will offer to help/give advice after the rant is over.

Depending on the setting, Wallace is a good choice for some ranting, too, but I love the thought of him being kind of like an uncle figure to her; he fills in some of the gaps about her mother she never really knew were missing, and had a real love for both of her parents that shows in the way he speaks of them; something she kind of holds onto because nobody else gets it.

Hector’s better for a sparring match than dialogue, but sometimes that’s what Lyn needs to get her mind off of things. I like to imagine he kind of ‘gets it’ when she needs to get out some frustration or something; it’s not anything she needs to talk about, but in absence of that, Lyn is the kind of person who still has to do something. If she’s looking for a word-fight she’ll go to him, too. He’s good for that, and he doesn’t (usually) take it personally.

Eliwood is a hard one to pin down, because it’s hard for me to imagine they’re really that close; I don’t think he ‘gets’ her the way most of the other characters do? He tries, though, and that counts for a lot. Also, he’s a lot like Florina in that he’s trustworthy: a good confidante. If Lyn ever needs personal advice (relationship or otherwise), I think Eliwood would be the right guy to go to for her. He wouldn’t tease or poke fun at her, and that information would NEVER reach anyone else’s ears. Ever. He’d offer diplomatic/polite advice with a smile and with an attempt to understand the situation and any important details first. He’s good at asking the right questions most of the time.

It’s been a long time since I deeply considered Lyn’s relationship to Hausen, but I think right now I’m sort of high-key imagining that they’re almost, like…fake-close? It’s not that they don’t love each other, because I think they do in their own ways, but being related or being interested in getting to know someone isn’t just a ticket to a close relationship. Not only do you have to want that, but you have to be compatible AND willing to take the time to cultivate what’s there. Lyn and Hausen both have tons of the latter, but I’m not so sure they’re compatible.

Her friendship with Kent still matters of course, so his place in this mix is probably a bit of everything, but he’s a high(er)-ranking individual she can confide in about information the others aren’t privy to…and he’s also a very good confidante (he’d rather die than betray her trust). She wouldn’t angry-vent at him too much because rather than just get emotionally hyped with her (Sain) or listen to her and offer calm, friendly advice (Wil), he strikes me as the type who wants to Fix It Right Now—even when that’s not necessarily the appropriate response. He may also kind of freeze up and Not Respond At All (when he doesn’t know how exactly he’s expected to respond), almost as a defense mechanism to avoid Responding Poorly.

Then you have Kent. Besides Lyn, he uh…really only has Sain.

But hey, that’s actually pretty much perfect for Kent. He’s never struck me as the kind of person who enjoys societal pleasure of any kind overmuch. It’s not that he finds it painful so much as maybe awkward? Most of his life has been in service and when he was younger and more impressionable—at the age where you learn to make friends and all that—he was more interested in impressing the adults in his life. Thus, he has only ever had one or two people to talk to about more important personal matters.

Again, it’s probably for the best. A couple of very serious and important relationships is about his maximum capacity. I don’t think he could maintain a slew of decent casual friendships (the way Lyn can), but also his bar for friendship and what constitutes a friend is very high.

Fiora is a good option for some general commiseration re: failure if he would bother to open up about it, but I don’t think either of them would do so easily. Still, they’ve both been commanding officers and I think that alone gives them something to talk about and discuss. I also feel their general morals line up, so if either of them need a rant about something other people would judge them for, they can go to each other.

Fiora and Sain are both great in that they would have Kent’s back if he needed it, so depending on how shit hit the fan, he could lean on either of them (but more easily on Sain just because that friendship has been years in the making; boon companions and all that).

He has decent relationships with some other people, though. I like to think he still looks up to Wallace, thinks well of Wil, and is on friendly terms with Florina, but I imagine his general acquaintances either stagnate or suffer because he’s not good at multitasking emotionally.

That isn’t necessarily a bad thing, though.

(I didn’t really mention Farina because...eh. I enjoy their interaction and I love writing it, but without a lot of very meaningful buildup, I wouldn’t even consider them friends.)

35. do they have any regrets (regarding the other, or just in general)?

This is a delicious question and a perfect one for Kent and Lyn. Let’s assume their paired ending:

I always take the endings (paired or otherwise) with about a grain of salt. You know: more like suggestions!

Kent and Lyn’s ending makes a reasonable amount of sense (you may have noticed that some endings just don’t ring true to characterization), but it also manages to be ridiculously open-ended. I guess at least it’s “happy.” (Unlike Canas’s. Damn blizzards.)

Anyway, Lyn abdicates and/or never assumes the throne (I guess there’s wiggle room there), Caelin’s totally fine with being absolved into Ostia (you know this is gonna happen), and they’re so chill about this that they don’t even mind Lyn running off with a former vassal. Maybe they didn’t want her ruling in the first place?

Eh, who knows.

The wording leaves room for questions/interpretative differences and all that, but the basics of it boil down to: they both go to Sacae.

This means they both give up things to go there, but we can’t pretend Kent isn’t the one making the bigger/more obvious sacrifice. He literally gives up everything except Lyn. Which, okay, the scope of it isn’t easy for a lot of people to grasp, but like, imagine leaving everything you’ve ever known and moving somewhere else with what you can feasibly carry with you on horseback.

That might not be too hard. Lots of us have moved across a country or even overseas.

Now imagine doing this, but doing it knowing full well that you may very well NEVER AGAIN hear from the people you’re leaving behind.

And not just that, but you’re leaving everything familiar to you. You don’t know the roads, the trees, the shape of the land, the colors, the smells.

Let’s talk Best Case Scenario! Even if, in good ol’ Fire Emblem-land, where farmers can be knights and all that, Kent comes from a farming background, he’d have left that behind before age 10. Again, on the BCS track, let’s say he retained a bit of that knowledge! Great! He knows a little about living off the land!

But he doesn’t know how to do it the way Lyn might know how to do it. So we have to go back to Lyn. She’s still pretty young herself, and her culture was big on group work; it’s not like anyone did the big chores alone. So Lyn almost surely has at least basic knowledge of what to do/what needs done, but 1) never would have done all of it, because roles were outlined, and 2) after a couple/few years away from it, and without the chance to grow into her role as a woman within her society, how much of the really important survival stuff does she actually remember? (Some of this depends on how old you think Lyn is and if her society felt she was an adult; either way she wouldn’t have been an adult for very long IMO, not enough to function in her society as such.)

There’s tons of stuff to explore here!!!!

Lyn in Caelin has the same problem Lyn on the plains has: she still doesn’t get to become an adult the way she always would have imagined she would. Her culture isn’t dead, but with less than ten surviving people, the chance of it fully dying out within a generation is huge. She can pass some stuff on to a child, but not everything. It’s not the same. She’s going to have to mourn this, and it may not hit her until she’s out there again and the reality of what’s missing hits her.

She could join another tribe, maybe—in theory, it might be more complicated than that—but their customs aren’t going to be the same. Heck, they might not even speak the same (exact or similar) language. (Would they even accept Kent with her? This could be something Lyn is sacrificing to bring Kent with her.)

Anyway, Lyn gets a little of what she wants going back to Sacae (at least freedom), but she doesn’t get her culture back and she doesn’t get that lifestyle back that she misses.

Kent’s making the bigger sacrifice, though, because nothing about Sacae is familiar to him.

Depending on what they try to do and where they go, it’s really easy to imagine regret existing in little bits and pieces.

Kent strikes me as the sort to very rarely have *deep* regrets. He may oftentimes ‘regret’ doing or saying something, but the bigger decisions he makes are done with conviction and never with haste, so he usually stands by them and his heart allows him peace.

That said, there’s no doubt he has regrets. I like the idea of him having a few regrets about situations where OVERALL he feels he made the best choice, but the regret stems from the negative things that happened because of that choice (having to fight his former peers/allies/teachers, for example, or fleeing and leaving his men to possibly die when Laus attacked). You know, he wanted to have his cake and eat it, too, but he couldn’t have both.

And then we have his relationship with Lyn.

I bet he low-key would have regrets about going to Sacae after-the-fact. Not the *actual* going, and certainly not in loving Lyn, but in not spending more time with his family beforehand, in not being more prepared, not asking enough questions, not bringing more supplies, not learning more of the language(s), et cetera. So much can go wrong out there without a support system. Kent’s not stupid and he’s not helpless, but he only has control over so much, and accidents happen. If they ended up in dire straights and there was little he could do to help...or was even actively hindering progress, he’d blame himself and it’d be a whole mess where he feels like he can’t contribute and he’s worthless, and then he’s depressed and miserable.

Lyn surely has regrets in general (re: her culture and her parents and all that), but I don’t think she regrets anything deeply easily (something she kind of has in common with Kent). It usually takes a lot for her to get that lingering gut-wrenching regret feeling. But you’d better believe if Kent ended up miserable she’d feel it. She’d hate being the cause of anyone she cares about’s personal pain, but it’d be a little extra awful if she’s fairly content out there and Kent isn’t.

I rambled too much and my head hurts so I’m not sure if any of this makes good sense, but I think there’s a lot of room for regret within their lives and even their relationship—especially if things go poorly for them. Not the loving part, of course, but the part where they pursued something and because of that their partner isn’t happy anymore (or accepted anymore, or whatever).

Hector/Farina:

50. if one of them were to come back after a long time, who would come to who? would it go well? would the other person take them back?

The only one who would probably ‘come back after a long time’ is Farina, because Hector’s pretty much tied to his canton after the end-game, so I gotta go with that.

As to if it would go well or not, well, I’m pretty sure I’ve RP’d like 30 variations on this theme (LMFAO), but the biggest factors are: their relationship with each other, and time.

If Hector was kinda into her and she acted like she was fine with that and then flew off for 10 years and came back trying to act like nothing was wrong... Well, it wouldn’t go well. I mean, not at first anything. (Nothing a good RP couldn’t fix, though. :B)

At that point in time, though, for an example to work with, it’s hard to say if Hector would ‘take her back.’ He may be unable to do so officially (married, busy running a country that’s falling apart at the seams, he has a daughter to worry about) and/or emotionally unwilling to let her back in. (Though this depends a lot on their former relationship and how she left/if she ever wrote to him or visited, if feelings were confessed, a lot of what-ifs, tbh.)

It also depends on how lonely he is. It gets clear that Hector and Eliwood get super busy and don’t even get to see each other regularly after the end of the game, so it’s possible that Hector would desire contact with someone who Gets Him (or at least Gets What He’s Been Through). The FE7 endgame is pretty much the opposite of FE8′s: it’s like nobody even knew it was happening and they gotta go back to their cantons like they didn’t just fight a whole ass dragon; he might be happy to have someone he can talk to about that again (in the event that his former vassals may no longer be in his direct employ and/or Farina fought by his side that day).

This creates a weird power imbalance in the sense that for most other people, if someone cancels on them, it gives them a sense of relief because they have more time with which to do other things. I rarely experience this; to the contrary I often feel frustrated or let down because I schedule social things and meetings with people as something to look forward to and keep me motivated and feeling connected to people as I go through my week.

I decided it wasn’t worth it...but doing so threw off my plans for the week because I had planned around going to that store so I was then lacking in some food items.

My friends didn’t seem to understand why I was inconvenienced by them cancelling. They had cancelled very nonchalantly, not apologizing or acknowledging that it might be imposing on me at all. When I expressed that I felt inconvenienced and wanted them to give me more advanced notice in the future, they reacted coldly, and it seemed to have damaged my relationship with them because they invited me to do less stuff together in the future, and I ended up growing apart from that group of friends.

These things may seem small...but the point is, this was just one thing that happened on one day.

My life is chock full of stuff like this. Some days I might have three or five things happen as big as this. It makes it harder to make and maintain friendships with people, more likely that other people will impose on me, or that I will impose on them. It makes my life more complex and difficult.

I’ve learned to cope with it and navigate it quite well, to the point that I can function pretty well in a lot of regards.
