Whiskerward is a still heavily work-in-progress cat colony builder RP where you make cats, trade them, and form and manage your own 'quarters'! The group is set in a fictional southern Irish inlet and has unique lore, low fantasy elements, and implements (mostly) real cat genetics to hopefully create something akin to a blend between species ARGs and traditional warrior cat RPs.

Fifty moons after the Conflict of Noctus, all four clans have settled back into their rhythm. Infighting is a thing of the past, prey is bountiful, and gatherings are peaceful. In this serene time, perhaps the clans can rebuild the numbers they had before. But who is to say what will get in their way? Mythical creatures, outside groups, and the extreme environments of Noctus threaten the clans. If they are to survive, they must bond together as destined beneath one moon. The clans of Noctus will thrive no matter what it takes.

☆ The Clans of Noctus ☆ is an 18+ (non-explicit) semi-lit to literate Discord Warrior Cats roleplay server. Inspired by Guardians of Ga'hoole, Noctus puts a fantastical spin on the clans: all characters created will be gryphons.

The land of Noctus is filled to the brim with 25+ species of detailed mythical creatures from various cultures, 80+ roleplay channels with descriptions and images attached, a crafting system that allows characters to make armor, weapons, and other items, new roles in the clans that encourage teamwork, and major plotlines planned for the future that will involve everyone.

ok so I am feeling SO lost. I just read the Thunder excerpt so I could catch up with your posts and I still feel like I've got no clue what's going on. Who got spayed?? What's everybody freaking out about with Squirrelstar's character?? did squirrelflight actually threaten bramblestar or are people just joking?? I feel like I'm looking into a blog from the future that somehow has the whole book already. please help I wanna know what's going on with the upcoming book but I'm still so so confused and the warriors app is impossible to navigate aaaaa

someone on the wcrp forums got the book early and is summarizing the chapters for everyone! here is the link to the thread. if you're like me and you don't want to read everyone else's commentary, you can use filters to only get the messages from the person releasing the chapter summaries (which is how i do things, i am not subjecting myself to wcrp forum opinions).

To Everyone Checking Out the New Website

It’s technically not done yet. Hold off on your judgement until it is fully completed and optimized. New websites always have kinks at the start of them, and I’m sure they’ll fix them in the upcoming weeks. 

I know it is poorly optimized at the moment, and slow to load, but it may not stay that way for long. If it does, well, there’s always other options for fan websites. WCRP is a great alternative.

In the meantime, why not say what excites you most about the prospect of a new warriors website?

For me: Being able to see what the community has to offer in terms of art, literature, and thought. I want to see what people come up with.

GRYPHON(?) GALLERY - IBISDANCE [NPC]

they/them | 170 moons | elder of the SunKin A sphinx with brown fur covered in darker rosettes. Their underside is a creamy white color; this color also dominates most of their face. They have white and navy feathers and blue hair that has been turning gray thanks to their age. They have a hair accessory made of bone that has the ankh symbol carved into it. They have golden eyes. They stand eighteen hands tall at the shoulder, though their long neck makes their head much higher than most other gryphons'.

Ibisdance, also known by their Children of Ra name Djehutimes, is a sphinx who was trained to be a scribe before they decided to stay in the SunKin clan full-time. Ibisdance is incredibly engrossed in the gryphon clans of Noctus and has dedicated their life's work to documenting as much as they can about them. Sometimes, Ibisdance comes off as a bit condescending, treating gryphons more like objects of study than actual beings... but they're still very amicable and kind to the SunKin.

If you'd like to learn about the Conflict of Noctus, Ibisdance is the first sphinx to ever write a full "book" on it. The limited sphinx language didn't cover enough ground for them, so Ibisdance has invented many hieroglyphs to fill in the pages. They hope to return to the Children of Ra shortly before they die and give them their manuscripts for safekeeping.

The South Asian summer monsoon (SASM) provides the principal water supply for over a billion people. In good monsoon years, farmers reap a rich harvest, while in bad monsoon years, severe droughts wipe out crops. And heavy rains during monsoon season cause floods and hit economy badly. Policymakers and stakeholders urgently need projection of SASM for the coming 15-30 years —usually termed as the “near future” in climate research community. Unfortunately, there are large uncertainties in current projection due to climate internal variability.

“Internal variability refers to variations in the mean state due to natural internal processes within the climate system. It is usually regarded as ‘noise’ in climate projection,” said Xin Huang, the lead author of a new study published in Science Advances on March 13, 2020. Huang is a doctoral student with the Institute of Atmospheric Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Huang, along with her mentor Prof. Tianjun Zhou and collaborators from USA and Germany, identify the Interdecadal Pacific Oscillation (IPO)—a large-scale long period oscillation influencing climate variability over the Pacific Basin—as one of the key internal variability modes that reduce the uncertainties and improve projections.

The team used a 100-member ensemble of simulations by the Max Planck Institute Earth System Model (MPI-ESM) and a 50-member ensemble of simulations by the Canadian Earth System Model (CanESM2) to quantify the uncertainty caused by internal variability in the near-future projection of SASM rainfall.

“We found that internal variability can eclipse the externally forced SASM rainfall change, leading to very different rainfall trends for next 15-30 years,” explained Huang. “So we wanted to further identify the key internal mode responsible for the spread in the projected SASM rainfall.”

After analyzing the similarities and differences among the 150-member model projections, the team found a linkage between different realizations of the IPO phase and the spread in the SASM rainfall projection. Different IPO phase transitions can modulate the magnitude or even reverse the sign of the SASM rainfall trends. Thus, the IPO is identified as one of the leading internal modes influencing the near-term projection of SASM rainfall.

“Historical data have already shown the signal of IPO in SASM change, but the climate projection community usually regarded the signal as noise in the projection. We show evidences that accounting for future IPO phase evolution helps effectively reduce the projection uncertainty of near-term SASM rainfall; in particular, it improves the projection of an extreme wetting or drying trend for the next 15-30 years,” said Huang.

The findings highlight the urgent need to predict IPO evolution for the next few decades.

“A large part of climate change adaptation and mitigation activities is based on prognoses delivered by climate models, so a highly robust and reliable climate prediction is the base of policy decision making. This research provides a practical way of more reliably projecting near-term South Asian summer monsoon changes,” said corresponding author Prof. Tianjun Zhou.

Zhou is a member of CLIVAR (Climate and Ocean: Variability, Predictability and Change) / GEWEX (Global Water and Energy Exchanges) Monsoons Panel of World Climate Research Program (WCRP), and co-chair of Global Monsoons Model Intercomparison Project (GMMIP), which is a coordinated multi-model investigation into decadal variability of monsoons.

According to Zhou, the study is part of GMMIP efforts devoting to improving the predictive skill for monsoons for the upcoming decades, which in turn will help policy-makers and stakeholders develop better climate strategies.

Sunstar was the original founder of the SunKin, as well as the pioneer of Noctus for gryphons. She was born as Sun during Moon 35 P.N. to a large family of eagle-owl gryphons that was recognized for their strict yet caring demeanor. Taking from her family, she was well known for her diplomacy, gratitude, confidence, and composure. Those who remember Sunstar always have fond memories of her chivalry, though most of those fond memories would be from the earlier moons of her life; later on as the tides changed in Noctus, she began to grow weary, her personality hardening to something unrecognizable.

Sunstar was one of the driving forces behind technological advancements in Noctus. It began with the sphinx, who were willing to help SunKin move into their territory as long as the gryphons would leave them be. The sphinx introduced twine made from sinew to the gryphons and Sunstar used this to create the role of artisans across Noctus. From there, gryphons of Noctus would go on to invent sleds, buckets, armor, jewelry, reinforced nests, and paint, with more innovations sprouting up every few moons.

Sunstar’s philosophy was that peace was necessary if Noctus was to thrive. Even in times of strife, Sunstar took a leaf from the sphinxs’ book and would isolate the SunKin until it was safe. The SunKin were trained to handle threats, but not to go out and find them first. Many of the SunKin are lithe and built for speed more than they are combat thanks to her prioritizing flight over fight.

Despite her reputation, Sunstar made the first move that night. Many blame her for what followed, but they don’t blame her for starting it.

The Clans of Noctus - Feedback Batch #1

I'm very excited to say I've already gotten a good handful of responses on the Interest Check Form! These responses have been very insightful in me making decisions for the server going forward. The truth of The Clans of Noctus is that it's not complete in its development, which is why I wanted to take feedback from the community to make it the best it could be. After all, another few sets of eyes doesn't hurt. I'll be doing these batches either daily or once every few days depending on how many responses I get on the interest check.

Now that that's out of the way, I'll be paraphrasing some feedback.

Can we have more lore about the clans, like their music tastes, art, culture, games, etc.?

This was feedback I got a couple of times on the interest check. I'm very, very happy that people are interested in the lore of the clans. I sat on this for a while and thought about how I could answer this, but I soon realized that with the current timeline, there wouldn't be any individuality between the clans - they only established 6 moons ago, after all. I also realized that this would bind people to playing specific character tropes and the leaders and moonspeaker of the FenKin would be predetermined characters: Sunstar, Rainstar, Fenmoon, and Skystar. (As a note, I'll be calling these the Origin Four from now on.)

That's why I'm going to do a minor overhaul of the lore. I'm sending Noctus over a hundred moons into the future and getting the Origin Four out of the picture. This will allow me to go more in-depth for the cultures I have planned for each clan without depending on players to write it for me. It will also mean more characters could be born in Noctus and I can approach players about creating character connections more easily!

I'll be revealing more over the next couple of months in terms of why the Origin Four are out of the picture and the cultures of each clan. As a hint: all responses have made the average conflict level for the clans about a 5/10...

I'm curious about the group's rules, activity checks, how many characters one player can create, and whether players will be able to see each other's clans.

Good question! Firstly, our rules page can be found on our Tumblr, but I've also made a website page that serves the same purpose. This category on the website will also have guidelines for applications when the time draws nearer. The rules will most likely change with time or be reworded as I see fit. I'll make posts when this happens.

There will be no activity checks. Of course, there will be check-ins for players who have been inactive for a long time, in particular during livelier roleplay months. As a somewhat slow roleplayer, I understand taking a month or so to reply to threads. However, radio silence for 6+ weeks will warrant a check-in to ensure the player still feels welcome and that their character can still be involved. It's a case-by-case basis, so I'm sorry if this isn't the clearest answer. (There's also the option to go on hiatus, which, again, is a case-by-case basis.)

I'm trying to decide how many characters one player can create. My current number in mind is two, then it will grow to three, four, and maybe five over the course of the roleplay depending on how smooth things go and how many mods I get on board. I'm anticipating on accepting max 25 people in the first application period, but even that is a high number. Again, mods will be needed.

Players will be able to see each other's clans. I understand wanting secrets, though, so people are free to mute categories if they want to hide other clans' happenings. This might change later.

What species are most common to each Kin?

I didn't want to restrict people from making specific species just to fit into a clan, so there's no strict answer. However, the image carousels on each clan page are a good representation. Owls are more common in SunKin than they are anywhere else. Waterfowl are more common in FenKin than they are anywhere else. RainKin is a bit of a kaleidoscope with many different species, but house the most colorful birds. SkyKin are most commonly birds of prey, like eagles, hawks, falcons, and owls. Still, there are many bird species - my best advice is that you look at the origin biomes for the bird species you're drawn to. Please note that there can be eagles that live in the jungle and owls that live in the swamp.

Why does part of the beak breaking off require retirement when it will eventually grow back unless there is MASSIVE damage?

I don't really have any long, thought-out answer to this, because I just didn't clarify that very well. I also don't really know why I put such a high consequence in the first place. Now's a good time to say that a lot of the content you see on the website is copy-pasted from the original server's launch over a year ago (to those who know, hi, it's the former owner with a new name, I handled the original server very poorly and have learned my lesson), so there might be a lot of errors. I've edited this on the website: "If broken piece is found, [webflower] or [Penghou blood] is used to fasten it back in place along with saps. Some of it may be shaved to attach it properly like a puzzle. A prosthetic made of a manticore stinger or owlbear beak can also be used if a broken piece is not found. It may grow back if the damage is not irreparable, but the process takes a few months. However, if there is massive damage to the beak, it can lead to retirement."
