They keep a stool empty for you at the Hanged Man.
clouds practice that turned into pain.. every day i think about how kirkwall is filled with ghosts and my hawke is just one in a long line of many haunting the place. perhaps she's the loudest.

One of my favorite things that happened during my last mage Hawke playthrough was during the final battle against Meredith. Everything's going well. We're kicking her ass, she's got just this much health left, we're so close... but then everyone gets stunned dizzy.
Hawke is stumbling around all confused, seeing stars. The rest of his companions are stunned. I'm annoyed because I just want to end this fight. Don't know how or who did it, probably Meredith, but the situation's dire.
Meredith's standing by herself at the center of the Gallows, shouting nonsense and smugly believing the Maker's going to come down and make her his new bride after she murdered a bunch of innocent people.
Truly, this is the part of the story where Varric says they all thought hope was lost, that in the end, Meredith would pull a fast one on us and claim victory...
Until the REAL hero of dragon age 2 comes storming at her. I don't know why Carver was the only one to not be affected, but he literally jumped out of no where and just started bashing Meredith with his sword while everyone else was too dizzy to do anything until she was dead and the cutscene played.
"Hawke defeated Meredith-" LIES, VARRIC. I know the truth! I was there! Hawke didn't do shit! Carver Hawke was the main character all along! He got shit done and Varric gave Hawke all the credit!
I bring this up because last night I finished my warrior Hawke run and when we got to the fight with Meredith, I kind of hoped the same thing would happen where Bethany dashed in all heroic and got the killing blow on Meredith.
She did not.
She got squished by a statue.
But it's fine, Bethany Hawke was the true main character in my heart.

I should be writting my thesis, but I am once again plagued with Dragon Age brainrot.
VARRIC/HAWKE OH MY GOD. The sheer potential for angst, the longing the pining and the ever present question of Bianca. Blue Hawke would be a mess. He would totally stay in the fade - he already lost his family, Carver's doing good with Wardens, his friends have their own life, and Varric? Varric's fine. He always is. He always has Bianca after all.
And Varric's complicated and repressed feelings would just hit him straight in the gut the moment the first shock would fade. He's in love with Hawke, has been for so long.
And now Hawke is dead. And now there is nothing to be done about this stupid stupid feeling he cradled so close to his chest he didn't even realise it was there. Varric would not be doing fine. Oh he would repress everything again and try to be his old self, but he'd rather avoid Cole, thank you very much.
And without Hawke there would be no-one to call him out on his bullshit. Not that they were ever any good about talking about feelings.
But Varric would stay up in his room, staring at the wall, haunted by the memories of Hawke's smiling face, of all the late evening where they would stay up, snuggled close somewhere in Hanged Man, drunk and too tired to move, laughing at some stupid hardly funny jokes. He would realise with a stark clarity that there was nothing of Hawke in his possesion but those sweet, painful memories. There was no memento, no trinket, nothing. You bet he would find his pack (if he left anything in Skyhold or in the camp) and pull out some tattered red shirt and hold on to that for the rest of his life.
welp, now i'm gonna cry.

I am once again losing my mind.
This time: I went to look up references of Varric, and just typed "Varric Tethras" into the search bar. I was going to just tab over immediately to the images section, eyes barely glancing over the obvious top-result fandom wiki, then (more entertainingly, but still expected) Wikipedia link-
but. but the next one.
Tumblr media
GOODREADS??
.... There's absolutely no tongue-in-cheek in the entry either.
(of course I immediately clicked on it who do you think I am)
There are 3 quotes from him relating to storytelling, both from 2 and Inquisition, as well as a book attribution:
Tumblr media
The Dragon Age Novel Edition of Hard in Hightown.
ATTRIBUTED TO VARRIC TETHRAS.
with Mary Kirby*~
Tumblr media
Absolutely unblinkingly written summary/bio.
I love this with my whole heart. Varric you beautiful bastard -- and DA writers/editors (Mary Kirby very much most importantly included) you even more beautiful, dorky, wonderful bastards.
---
*if you're not in the know, Mary Kirby is a cornerstone of the DA writing team, including being the one who was in charge of Varric (and Merrill!). To say she's his "trusted human confidante" is certainly putting it one (delightful) way.

I know everyone loves to choose to duel the Arishok because thematically it's great, lots of drama, but I absolutely love what happens if you don't too.
Like getting in a giant brawl with all the qunari vs your friends to protect Isabela (and Kirkwall) is just such a Hawke vibe. It's messy. It's not heroic and perfect. And of course Varric would look at that and decide he needs to make it more dramatic.

“I knew him as Solas, a thoughtful mage obsessed with dreams.”
Varric are we talking about the same Solas who played strip Diamondback in Haven with Blackwall and pretended not to know how to play so Blackwall had to walk back to his room with a bucket over his dick??

Now that the other polls are closed I want to see who the ultimate Dragon Age companion is!
My thoughts on the other poll results under the read more!
I wasn't necessarily going to do a deep dive into my thoughts but after watching y'all clowns this last week I have some thoughts.
Dragon Age: Origins: I will admit that I was surprised to see how strong the Zevran love was. As an Alistair fan, I will admit sometimes I get blind to how great all the other companions, especially love interests, are. So surprised but pleasantly surprised! The rest of the results aren't too shocking, but I have one question for the 4.3% of you that voted for Loghain: Are you okay? Like really I almost didn't add him because the thought of anybody voting for him was laughable, but 4.3% of you really proved me wrong and I don't know how to feel about it, but I mostly feel anger.
Dragon Age: 2: A poll with 9 options and 921 votes ended with a tie and while I can't put my finger on it I somehow feel that fits perfectly with DA:2. Also, this poll had the most votes by nearly 300 votes, and I love that the most underrated Dragon Age game had the most votes. It truly deserves it.
Dragon Age: Inquisition: This game had the least enthusiasm in the tags. I saw many "I guess Dorians" which is totally opposite of the aggressive sweep tags I saw in the DA:2 and DA:O polls. I don't know that I had even realized how meh the companions were compared to the other game until I really had to try and pick one.
In conclusion, this was a blast and it was fun reading everybody's tags and seeing parts of the Dragon Age fandom I don't usually see. I can't wait to see who wins overall and I am already contemplating whether I will do Mass Effect once this is over!

Drawing Varric Tethras except it's Hawke drawing him during their hours long chats
Tumblr media
I just think... 2 artist friends. One writes, the other draws the other. They talk about the pains of creation, they laugh at the silly mistakes. They're each other's muse and anyways I love this man

it's "thinking about carver and hawke together in the inquisition" hours
Carver and Dorian isn't a combo I expected to enjoy so much, but here we are.
(contextual note: this is from The Sarcastic/Charming Option, my ongoing attempt to somehow romance Dorian with a very purple Hawke)
--
Dorian taps a finger on the page he’s currently reading. “Did Hawke really say this line about boneless women flopping through the street, or was that a case of artistic license?”
Hawke goes stock still. As if this might allow him to blend into his surroundings and escape everyone’s notice.
Carver is looking pointedly at Hawke, as if to intentionally ruin this illusion.
And Varric breaks into a grin. “Uh… I’d call that one a solid fifty-fifty.”
“How is that possible?” Dorian asks. “He said half of it?”
“Yes, exactly,” Hawke says. “I said half of it. Only the nicest, most considerate half.”
“He did say the terrible thing,” Varric says, “but he didn’t say it in front of the grieving priest. It’s not nearly as funny that way, though, right?”
“I absolutely agree,” Dorian says. “Thank you so much for the clarification. That helps ever so much in my ongoing judgment of our mutual acquaintance.”
“Hey, no,” Hawke says. “That’s not fair! You can’t judge me based on what Varric writes.”
“What else is he supposed to judge you on?” Varric asks. “Your actions?”
“Now that you mention it,” Hawke says, “that also isn’t ideal.”
“Wait, wait,” Carver says. “You’re trying to learn about Garrett? Is that it? Well, that book’s not going to help. All that’s in there is Varric wanking him off for hundreds of pages.”
“Wow, Junior,” Varric says. “Just wow.”
“Beg pardon?!” Hawke splutters. “No one wanks me off at all in that book! Trust me, I’d remember.”
Dorian chuckles. “I bet you would.”
At those words, Hawke’s indignation screeches to a halt. His eyes snap to Dorian’s, then linger there, as if searching for any stray implications Dorian might have scattered for him.
There is a distinctly charged quality to the air between them, Dorian thinks. Impossible to avoid, what with the memory of their extremely recent collaboration on the exact lewd act that Carver is describing. Rather than say anything else on the subject, Dorian just gives Hawke his patented charming smile.
And Hawke ventures a smile back. That usual mix of uncertain and thrilled.
Oblivious to all of this, Carver snorts. “That’s basically what it is, though. ‘And then the heroic and clever Hawke said some witty lines and killed everyone again!’ As if that’s how it ever went. We both know he doesn’t remember his witty lines until about half an hour after everyone’s dead.”
“Ah-ha!” Hawke says—though his eyes stay on Dorian’s for one more moment before he wheels around to point at Carver. “So! You’re admitting my lines are witty.”
“Does it matter when you never say them in time?” Carver asks.
“Still in time for my beloved brother to hear them,” Hawke says. “Maybe they’ve all been for your benefit. So glad you appreciate my clever banter!”
Carver groans, though it can’t fully obscure the chuckle that tries to rise from his throat. “Stop being stupid.”
“Can’t. Impossible.”
“All right then, Ser Warden Carver,” Dorian says. “If this book is indeed so lacking, let me hear your interpretation of the matter.”
“My what?”
“What do you think I should know about your brother?” Dorian asks. “What are the key facts?”
Hawke is beginning to look alarmed again. “I… what? Why?!”
“Well, that’s easy,” Carver says. “He’s the world’s most brilliant doormat.”
"I’m what?”
“Oh? Fascinating!” Dorian says. “Please, do go on.”
Carver says, “Basically, everyone who meets Garrett immediately asks him for some huge and inconvenient favour. There’s just something about Garrett that makes people think they can do that. And then, worse still, he goes and actually tries to meet every unreasonable request, because he thinks he can. And also because he’s an idiot.”
Hawke opens his mouth as if to protest, considers it, then shrugs and nods.
“See? You’re just describing the plot of my book,” Varric says. “And you called it inaccurate. Unfair.”
“Yeah, because you trip over yourself to make him seem cool in the process.”
“Not to worry!” Dorian tells Carver. “I am under absolutely no illusions about Hawke’s ability to be ‘cool.’”
“Suppose you wouldn’t be,” Carver says. “It only takes spending five minutes with him.”
“Precisely.”
“You are both extremely cruel,” Hawke says. “Terrible and mean. My self-esteem would probably be shattered by now if I didn’t have Varric around to wank me off.”
“Yep. That’s what I’m here for. You’re welcome.”
“You know,” Dorian says, “I think there are people who would pay a great deal to see that.”
“Hear that, Varric?” Hawke asks. “A business opportunity! Why are we risking our lives out here when we could be wanking our way into prosperity?”
“Okay, first of all, that’s definitely not my style,” Varric says. “And second of all… how much are we talking, exactly?”
Carver grimaces. “All right, I really don’t want to picture this. Can we please change the subject?”
And Hawke whirls on him again: “This, from the person who brought up wanking me off in the first place?!”
“Well, I didn’t mean literal wanking, did I?!”
“Excuse me, gentlemen!”
At the sound of Cassandra’s voice cresting over their argument, both Hawke boys freeze as if they have just been spotted by their mother.
Cassandra has her arms crossed, wearing her usual weary frown. “We plan to be up early to reach Skyhold before dusk. Might I suggest you save this conversation until morning?”
“…Of course!” Hawke says. “Naturally. Right.”

I KNOW I’ve said it before and that multiple others have but….
Varric really is such a good character. One of the bests.
Like I’m at the beginning of DAI in Haven and I just notice how he says he babysits his informers (his spies) and worries about them and their families. He says Leliana stays distant, but he doesn’t. He comes off as playful, even admits he’s a liar at times, makes up stories to evade questions, but he really cares about people! Even people who only work for him.
And THEN! The part of him lying about Hawke!! Keeping them away from more trouble, more pain, and pressure. He just wants them to be happy, and it’s clear he still protects his other friends. He seems to know many details about their life at the moment. He knows Fenris is killing slavers and he could easily find where, he knows Isabela is a captain (or is supposed to be I believe), Merrill is still in Kirkwall protecting many elves and other refugees, Aveline is still the guard captain, Carver is a Grey Warden doing some shit, and he just praises them UGH!
I love Varric and I hope I make that clear with every post I make about him. He’s not just witty or funny, he’s actually kind and caring about almost everyone he meets.
Bro sounds just like Dorian almost-
And now I need to ask about Anders👀.

FANFIC: Cheating the Dread Wolf by cartadwarfwithaheartofgold
I read this story long ago all in one sitting. It absolutely gripped me, tugged at my heartstrings, and wouldn't let me go. A Cadash/Solas/Varric Tethras rare pair, you have to give this a try.
Rating: E Pairing: Female Cadash/Solas, Female Cadash/Varric, Varric/Solas Chapters: 13/13 Length: 42,657 words Summary: Maria Cadash hung up the Inquisitor's mantle for the Viscountess' crown, but she's unable to stop her desperate and impossible struggle to stop Fen'Harel from destroying the world both her husband and daughter inhabit. The fact Varric, Maria, and Solas are all madly in love with each other just means she may have enough of an edge to win this game.

I love thinking about the fact that Anders fled the Circle seven times and got caught every time, became a Grey Warden to evade recapture and was still pursued by templars even though the Grey Wardens legally override their jurisdiction in every sovereign nation in Thedas, fled the Grey Wardens after becoming possessed by Justice and then spent seven years in one city living in one place running a free healing clinic that he never moved, and was never caught.
Plot hole, or simply a plot contrivance? I say no. Makes perfect sense. Something big changes for Anders around this time, namely that he becomes friends with someone who has connections all over Kirkwall and canonically is known to pay off whoever he needs to in order to keep his friends safe (as he does to make sure Merrill never gets mugged in Lowtown).
You know, the same guy who swears to the Inquisitor that he has no idea where Anders is (but also somehow knows where to send a letter if Anders' partner is left in the Fade).
Even Meredith's zealotry is powerless against corruption--not the corruption of darkspawn blood or red lyrium, but the simple corruption of greed that lurks in the hearts of men. There's a kind of person that knows where to make the coin move to make heads turn away from their sworn duty, and can offer the kind of protection even the friendship of the Hero of Ferelden couldn't buy.
It's only after he becomes close friends with Varric Tethras that suddenly templars can't seem to locate or apprehend Anders for years and years on end.
