(Taga is the one scientist that was always nice to Cora, sneaking her nice things. This takes place when Cora is maybe 6-8?)

The cell always got a bit chilly at night. The thin layer of peach fuzz across Cora’s body was hardly enough to keep her warm when night fell. Their smaller body didn’t seem to radiate enough heat on its own to fight the chill away. They found that tearing the sheet from their bed (a glorified cot really) and wrapping it around themselves as many times as possible provided the best protection against the cold, but it still wasn’t comfortable.

She had complained to Dr. Nova once. She had asked in a small, sheepish voice if the temperature could be adjusted to be warmer at night. The doctor had merely scowled and said something about “adapting.”

The air from the vents was even more frigid that night.

Many of Cora’s pleas and requests to Dr. Nova fell upon deaf ears—but there was a light in the dark, and it took the shape of soft chocolate brown eyes framed with crows feet and salt and pepper hair that was beginning to grow lighter with age. That light in the dark, who she later found was named Taga, provided warmth, in more ways than one.

Cora could have cried for joy the day Taga snuck her in a blanket. It was the first kindness between them—and certainly not the last.

On another day, Cora found herself hurting and exhausted from a long day of experimentation, some new serum pumping through her veins and leaving them sick and drained. Dr. Nova had insisted on their usual routine of exercises and they had almost passed out at the end.

But once again, Taga eased the ache. There was a glass of water on the table by Cora’s cot, beside which a pair of pills was set out with a note signed simply “T.”

(Bonus line I hadn’t placed yet. This is the fic where Taga gifts them their teddy bear, Arlo! So this would come sometime after)

She dreamt that night of being wrapped in the warm, soothing arms of a mother. She wore Taga’s tusked smile.

Hey guys, sorry about the heavy vent I posted a while ago. I'm feeling slightly better and have made some general goals for the new year.

I'm taking a 'gap month' for January to make a better plan for myself. Mainly, I plan on finding a few free advanced education courses online since I want to accrue knowledge but don't want to fork over money for a degree. Not only that, but I'm planning on getting back into art! (Wahoo!)

Also, I'll need to gather mental strength to get back into art. If you'll hype me up as the most talented and precious little muffin (or whatever, IDC), drop a 'wahoo' somewhere! Don't be shy. Please.

i bring to you a vent fic ft. gem and etho and pearl wahoo!! sensitive topics incoming

gem, gem's boat, and the ocean gem drowns in

“Gem?” Gem can’t hear anything. She’s silent. She’s thinking, but she’s thoughtless. She only feels water pressing up against her skin, through her chest… The gentle current sweeping her hair through the water, as it mindlessly bumps her head against the sand caked below, or as it pushes her into the wooden hull of her boat… again… and again… and again… And then, even if only for a second, Gem feels nothing, and it's comforting.

a/n i actually wrote like 90% of this like the day after hermitcraft 10 started, but then i felt better after writing it and just left it to rot but now i feel sad again and i finished it wahoo!!!! i also feel the lack in etho and gem content so here we go i guess!!/

the fic is open to everyone, including unregistered users at the moment, but i will change access to just registered users after a week or two as per usual so my irls dont find out hahaha

The sails turn, the wind shifts, and the tide changes. Here comes a new start, and gosh is it approaching faster than ever. Heck, it’s already begun.

Mining is one of the best ways to have a think, Gem learnt that from an old friend, and yet she finds fishing is even better.

It’s relaxing, it’s enjoyable, and it’s extremely grounding. ‘Grounding’ in a way that is, well, both comforting, and at the same time, slightly frightening. Though Gem doesn’t let it worry her. She simply rigs her rod, and thinks it away.

To ‘have a think’ could mean many things, really. Brainstorming base ideas, wondering whether it’s a ‘farming’ day or a ‘building’ day, and… to ‘have a think’ could very literally mean, just thinking. Just thinking. Raw thoughts, completely unfiltered. Whether these thoughts are good for the mind, or bad, Gem doesn’t like to think too hard about it. But she finds herself doing exactly that, anyways.

And there she is again, thinking. As if in the ocean without a sense of up or down, she sinks. Completely engulfed. Drowned in thought.

Her red fishing float bobs gently on the water’s surface, and the sun feels sweet resting upon her cheeks. Her boat is anchored, and it sways gently with the current. Salty air beneath her sleeves, hair flowing just as the water flows beneath. Her feet hover over the water, dangling from her knees that are precariously positioned over the side of her boat as she sits on the stern. But she is content, and there is a rod in her hands, and she is fishing. And she is thinking.

Ever heard of intrusive thoughts? That imagery of having a little devil on a shoulder and an angel on the other? Sometimes they float into Gem’s mind uninvited, but they do so in such a way that makes Gem want to think more about it, no matter how much she hates it.

Gem is scared of getting lost in thought. So what? Fishing is grounding. Every time there’s a slight tug on her line and a splash in the water, she’s back to reality. And it always works. It always works.

But there’s another line inside Gem’s head. Consistently tugging and pleading. It’s not a fishing line, it’s more of… a rope. Something constricting. Something thick and strong, something hard to resist or cut. Too far means too thick, too thick means too strong, and too strong means… Well, let’s leave it at ‘too much of a weight on Gem’s shoulders.’

What isn’t a weight on Gem’s shoulders, is swimming. Gliding through the water, alongside dolphins and fish and whatever else Gem manages to find in the reefs beside her beginnings of a home. Fully clothed, too. It’s a pain to find a new set and wash the current of salt water, but it was all in good fun.

As much as swimming is a form of Gem’s relaxation, many times has she managed to find herself distracted in the act, too. Lost in her thoughts. It’s risen to a bit of a problem now, and it’s finally bought Gem’s attention. Though she shuts it out. She tries to.

It’s only until she feels her lungs constrict, as if bound by thick rope. Her chest feels heavy, and she no longer sees flurries of white bubbles, spiralling up to the surface. The rope seems to tighten the longer Gem thinks, so much so that something clicks in her mind, and she wakes up.

Goodness gracious, she’s drowning.

But it’s all in good fun! It’s all in good fun, is what Gem tells herself. Is it?

I made this vent post quite a long time ago. I still stand by what I've posted, though there are grammar errors AND looking back, I feel that it looks hateful on the og but that couldn't be further from the truth.

Also someone said that they thought I interpreted the og Dante as lacking depth, so I'll clarify now.

I do like DMC. Its oddball blend of gothic supernatural Judeo-Christian themes with a ridiculously cheesy and too powerful for his own good protagonist are always fun and intriguing to try around.

The og Dante, despite all the B-movie Japonized Western Noir shenanigans he has running for, is a man of many interpretations.

I do think Dante has MORE he has going for. Manga after manga of him in it, Dante is shown to have baggage. Kamiya Hideki saying he's "afraid when doing his thing" is nice to know but... I feel like we SHOULD know that by now, right?

To me I think it's not just fear but exhaustion. Perhaps it must be exhaustion. He's killed thousands of demons by now, including his own brother (And Vergil has PLENTY of baggage as well..). And nothing's changed much in his world. That aspect would be nice to explore even further right ..

But it's been 2 decades already, and I feel like despite loads of supplementary media (some are in this vague state of semi-canon? Retroactivity?) about Dante and the characters, there's this distance or gap in between the tone/focus on their stories when we're experiencing them in the games.

Like it's okay to have supplementary media to support the games' on-going narrative..😬.. but I feel like it became the other way around, if that's even what happened.

I also have to say this..as much as I deeply appreciate the DMC fandom's efforts on providing more interpretation on the gaps of the franchise's lore (especially before 5 came out), I can't help feel that Capcom has to really rely on the efforts of the fans when it came to polishing out what were even the events that game didn't provide.

Sure, it's interpretation and lore-diving that has so many of us clamoring like bees to pollen, and it's probably a very lucrative move on their end.

But on criticizing it on how legible it's narrative is structured and the on-going story has gone so far, all I'll say is that I've managed to understand the fandom's collective interpretation and it's trajectories, MORE SO than what Capcom has provided. It's so colorful, and there's at least an understanding of Dante's characterization AND pushes the envelope even further with him when it comes to fanfics, compared to the Too-Safe-Everything-Is-Cool-Again-Nothing-To-Worry-Look-He's-Doing-Wacky-Wahoo-Pizza-Moments-Again!-Isn't-That-What-You-Wanted moments he's always expected to go through..

And now that DMC has Pinnacle Of Combat and an upcoming Netflix Anime (and I'm calling it now, even if it's not from Adi Shankar or the one being teased in the Tudum Drop Trailer, it's still the one that's gonna be made because Capcom has already seen how lucrative enough DMC seems to be for their higher-ups & shareholders and such..), what are they adding and subtracting in the lore now, or is the anime gonna be like Arcane LOL type of adaptation, etc. IDK...

In closing this new mess, I just wanna say that DMC fans deserve a much bolder move on the og as a character.

I remember (quite vaguely, if anybody has any research on this article/artbook, lemme know because I'd read that, I crave for info) how their lead writer Bingo Morihashi has wanted to do something about DMC's story for quite a while now, but Hideaki Itsuno himself advised against such a move because it wouldn't fit the style and expectation about DMC.

If this is true, I'm like ??????? 😨

Bingo Morihashi is a novelist by career. I'm not wondering why so many of the supplementary novels are written AND taken well by the fans because I believe what he has written was always crucial to DMC. However why such skills aren't put in the same vein for the games? The games are the highlight of the franchise! It would be even more lucrative if they had let Bingo Morihashi do his thing (I really want to find this article/written interview..)

Video games today benefit a lot from narrative. It always did but with the tech today, video game screen writing is even more significant today!

I don't blame Itsuno (again if that was true....) because I actually understand because he knows the DMC fans😓 and yes I'm sure his experience with DmC has lent to some decisions from his part.

But imagine the better possibilities with the og Dante. I really think it's been long overdue to push some new boundaries with DMC.

gonna go out into the frigid garden and work on my workshop shed because my housemate is driving me cray. she's got this thing where when I get the house clean and tidy she takes that as her cue to empty one room into all the communal space to "organize" her dozens of hobbies and in the process renders the rest of the house uninhabitable. Then she gives up half way through requiring me to finish it if I want to ever see our floors again. All the while she whisper-chants song lyrics from her headphones like an creepy ghost radio. And ALWAYS starts this shit when I want a day to chill out. I know that she's got ADHD up the wahoo but any attempt to come to some sort of mutually acceptable solution means I get snapped at and told I'm a bad friend for. I really want my own place but I've invested soooo much time and effort into this place and I cannot even begin to afford renting on my own.
