Mixing Stuff Masterpost for Vocal Synth Users
i'll say a few things here and there on how i approach mixing based on a set of guidelines i've been giving thru learning. i won't go 100% and i encourage you research further on your own as everyone has a different perspective of certain concepts. whats important is that you understand the concept so that you are able to interpolate on it with your own liberties. yeah. please read the links before looking at my commentary or you won't understand what im saying.
Some DAWs, Their Guides, & Some Freebies: One of the first things you should do is pick a DAW and learn how to use it and its functions to streamline your mixing process.
Free DAWs: The Best Available in 2023 by Produce Like A Pro
Audacity / DarkAudacity (i like darkaudacity): has a section of the site dedicated to tutorials on using Audacity!
Reaper: has a 3 hour course FREE course on mixing!
FL Studio: has a demo version you can pretty much use forever with a few.........exceptions. I won't be linking any cracked versions though. Here's a manual for this program since many people use it!

ORDER IN THE COURT!: The order of plugins is more important than you think. These links should also introduce some terms we use in the audio production world (like "gain staging" or "EQing")
WHAT'S THE BEST EFFECTS CHAIN ORDER FOR MIXING? by Icon Collective:
The Order Of Things: Audio Plug-ins by AskAudio
Plugin order is viewed from "top to bottom". BASICALLY... most like to gain stage -> EQ -> compress -> saturate -> MORE EQing -> whatever else at this point, but i do my process a bit differently. don't be afraid to bend the rules a little bit. but the guidelines are there for a reason.....based on what they do
Basics: I'll link to some tutorials to elaborate on what was listed by Icon Collective's list.
Gain Staging: Gain Staging Like a Pro by Sweetwater
Saturation: Saturation in Mixing – Instant Warmth, Glue and Fullness with One Plugin by Tough Tones (soundgoodizer fans make some fucking noise i guess)
EQ: SUBTRACTIVE VS ADDITIVE EQ (WHEN TO USE EACH & WHY) by Producer Hive

Making a few character centered playlists to give to a friend that said he wanted to get into more music with Vocaloids. It was the first idea that popped into my head and it seemed fun to just throw it together. Figured I'd also post them here, cause why not?
So I present to you
Tumblr media
The Miku playlist
The Kagamine Rin/Len playlist
The Kotonoha Akane/Aoi playlist
The Yukari playlist
The Chis-A playlist
The V/Ci Flower playlist
The Kafu playlist
The Teto playlist
The Adachi Rei playlist
The Kaai Yuki playlist
The Otomachi Una playlist
The GUMI playlist
The Kasukabe Tsumugi playlist
The Nene Nene playlist
I'll be updating the playlists and this list of playlists as I go on. This is everything that came to mind when I threw this together.
I feel still relatively new to the vocal synth scene having only started listening back in 2020 so I figured updating these fairly regularly would help me go out of my way more to discover new songs.

Chis-A is a japanese synth developed by Techno-Speech, and originally released in 2022. her vp has not been revealed, but her illustrator is cherico. chis a was initially released as an alpha prototype for (then) cevio pro/ (now) voisona, then on 2 jun 2022 as a beta prototype, then on 1 sep 2022 for the actual fully released product version, and on 24 feb 2023 for the english version. chis a's the first synth for cevio pro/ voisona. due to it being her english vbs first anniversary, it is currently available for free for one month from download

Sometimes when I'm bored I like to binge check out songs posted by dailyenglishvoca (since they usually have more lesser known / obscure producers)
So many hidden gems!!! But probably so many still hidden.. how do I find the gems ;__;
If you somehow see this and are a vocaloid / vocal synth producer, please show me I beg of you

Honestly I know so many people who like. Know about Vocaloid, maybe other synths too, enjoy it, but feel distanced from it because they can't really put their hands in it. That was me for many years.
If you like some vocal synth voices, if you think it'd be fun for a vocal synth voice to say this and sing that, remember that there are many ways to use vocal synths for free.
You could make your own covers, or you could just. Make them say the one funny sentence and go "hehee"
UTAU is a free program that allows for anyone to create their own vocal synth, and for anyone to use these vocal synths, (or UTAUs) granted they have the download link. There are a few famous UTAUs like Kasane Teto or Namine Ritsu, but you could also fall in love with a lesser known UTAU created by some rando! In case you don't enjoy using UTAU, the program, there are front-ends for it such as OpenUtau that are easier to use with some more functions. There are UTAUs in many different languages.
Synthesizer V Basic is the free version of Synthesizer V. It's completely useable on its own, with some limitations such as having only three tracks at a time (which is completely manageable) and not being able to use paid voicebanks to their full potential (which won't impact you if you only use the free voicebanks). As of right now, being that I'm missing just a few Standard Lites, I have 22 Lite (aka free) voicebanks, + 3 Free Limited Trial voicebanks on SynthV. This includes some voicebanks you may be familiar with, such as Kasane Teto SV, Eleanor Forte, Eleanor Forte AI, SOLARIA, Haruno Sora...
Synthesizer V Editor (also known as R1) is an old version of Synthesizer V with a free trial that you can use forever. It has a few free voicebanks, iirc being Yamine Renri, GENBU and Eleanor Forte. If you like GENBU, you might be interested in testing his R1 voicebank, since his Lite on SynthV Basic has some imperfections. (sob)
DeepVocal is another free program similar to UTAU. It has its own voicebanks and its own appearance. It's not currently being developed but you can continue to download and use all its free voicebanks!
NEUTRINO is a lesser known AI program which is, at the moment, completely free. It's a little tricky to use, and is not compatible with... well, my PC for example, but if you listen to it and like its voices, it's worth looking into - it may work for you!
VoiSona is another current program that can be downloaded for free with a free voicebank, being Chis-A! If you like Chis-A... she's free!
I'm less familiar with ACE Studio because I don't. personally like it. but it comes with a free trial - another option to look into!
I think you can also get you a free trial for VOCALOID6 with its native voicebanks. If you're into text-to-speech programs, VOICEVOX is an option if you know Japanese! (It supports some recognisable voicebank such as GENBU-as-just-a-guy, Namine Ritsu, Shikoku Metan who is also on UTAU and NEUTRINO... etc.)
Thanks to her new SynthV voicebank, there's even talk of Gumi Megpoid having a Lite (aka free) voicebank in the future. If you want to get into vocal synth, if you just want to test it out, you can do it right now for free. I'm sure I forgot some examples. People often talk about their paid voicebanks collections, about buying the newest release, but you can do so much for free. Like just get Chis-A. What's stopping you? Some SynthV Lite voicebanks are really high quality, like Kyomachi Seika AI, to me, is barely distinguishable from her full version. Sorry to keep rambling, but I think the "wow! you can make a neocities website for free??!" site needs to know you can also make a vocal synth cover for free. You can make your own songs featuring a vocal synth for free (not commercially) too.
