Hello um may I ask a question? I just started my first ever fic when usually I write my own things away from any fandom. I’ve been posting to ao3, I spend hours upon hours getting a chapter done, proof read and edit about 30 times before I’m satisfied enough to post it, I try to keep it as original as possible however I’m quickly losing motive, I don’t typically care for numbers or views but this has made me care a little. I’ve found that a lot of fics that are written by someone who’s first language isn’t English do grab a lot more attention, the language barrier is obviously not a problem ive read many fics that I’ve thoroughly enjoyed who were written by a non English speaking person. The fics I’m referring to have very lose and sporadic storylines, they don’t make any sense because of the lose ends all through it, it’s very ‘and this happens and then this happens and now this happens’ but nothing is explained, these fics gain almost three times the attention mine does and I’m confused at what I could be doing wrong. I’m not entirely new to writing but I feel like my effort is being wasted. I started it for myself and not to please every person who finds it but seeing this has definitely knocked my confidence… what could be the problem?

First of all, congrats on starting you first fic :)

This is kind of a tricky question to answer because this is actually something that I've been quietly struggling with for a while now. I haven't really talked about it much though because the issue I've had sounds kind of whiney even in my own mind lol.

It's also tricky because it really kind of depends on the fandom you're writing for. Different fandoms have different interests and things that they tend to enjoy. To be honest I some times feel like the more original/unique it is the less attention the fic gets. Some of my least reviewed fics are the ones with bizarre concepts while my most popular ones tend to be stuff like 'there was only one bed'. That's not to knock these fics of course--they're popular for a reason. But more unique concepts tend to be more niche and not for everyone. Like I am a big fan of horror and zombie AUs which is something that not everyone is into. So it's not anything that you're doing wrong it's just that some concepts aren't as popular.

Likewise for certain ships and fandoms. Nerissa from W.i.t.c.h. is one of my favorite characters. The fandom isn't super popular and Nerissa is not a fan favorite to say the least so I kind of go into those fics expecting no attention. Even in popular fandoms like Avatar. I wrote this one (29 chapters) and it only got one review from my art bang partner. And my Azula fics are usually my most popular. However this one was for the Azula/Cupholder girl pair which is just such a niche interest that I'm not surprised that it was ignored. Throw on top of that, that it was sort of a dark fic. Even so it's still discouraging to but in 29 chapters of work and get nothing so I see where you're coming from. You just have to remind yourself that sometimes it isn't your writing that's the problem but simply that you're writing for a more niche concept/pair/character. With fics sometimes you just gotta write for you.

But honestly across the board I've noticed that I've been getting less reviews lately. I've talked to some others in my fandom on a discord server and they feel the same way. I genuinely think that people are just reviewing less. And you can't force people to review. Which is why it's important to just write for you. It's probably not anything that you're doing wrong it's just that some people might not have time to comment or they're shy and/or just don't know what to say so they don't say anything at all and settle for kudos and bookmarks. Also some people might not want to make accounts.

In general I feel as though writing and fandom as a whole has gotten a lot tougher. Back when I first started writing I never really had to worry about, 'is this story going to get people mad at me'? By this I mean that when I first started writing fics angst and dark fics seemed to be really popular. Like my best work was my really dark and depressing stuff. Recently these are the fics that are either loved or hated. They get a lot of nice reviews but they have also received some of my nastiest reviews. And people seem to get genuinely mad at authors for writing dark fics even if it's to cope. Which brings me to the next point; fandom evolves and changes; what's popular then won't stay popular. If you're an older fic author you'll probably got through periods of attention and then you'll fall out of the spotlight and maybe get back into it later on. If that makes sense.

But like I said above, I feel like fandom has just gotten tougher. Maybe I'm just seeing things that aren't there but sometimes I feel like people are becoming a lot harder to please or they're just really quiet about their enjoyment. Which it kind of is what it is. And there's nothing wrong with silent enjoyment. There's also nothing wrong with having specific tastes. I'm not going to lie, I'm kind of a picky reader myself lol.

That's why my best advice would be literally to write for you. Take breaks if you need to to avoid burn out. Fic writing lately (for me at least) has become write something I'd like to read and with luck other people will want to read it too. Just remind yourself that some pairs, characters, and tropes just aren't as popular and that your writing probably isn't the problem; most likely its just be a matter of writing for something that is underrated in your respective fandom.

If it helps, I've had people tell me on anon and not that they read everything I write but they don't review because they just don't know what to say. So odds are that you have a whole bunch of readers that really support and adore your work, they just prefer to lurk and not interact with the fandom much.

I hope that this helps even just a little. But like I said, it's hard for me to give advice on this because sometimes I feel the same way as you.

F - What’s the longest you’ve ever been in a fandom

Ooh, so my immediate response is W.i.t.c.h., because I got into it ~16 years ago and was obsessed, but I didn’t really discover the fandom until a number of years later, and didn’t actively start engaging with it until about five years ago. ...Still going to count it, though, because that’s nearly two decades of being a fan, and I’m currently in the fandom.

L - Your favorite fanartist/author gives you one request, what do you ask for

I mean, if it’s an artist, probably fanart of one of my fics? Merlyn Boys. Most likely Merlyn Boys, self-indulgent as it is. But if that’s not on the table… I guess it’d depend on the fandom(s) I know the creator from, and I’d think of something accordingly. (Knowing me, though, there’d probably be group hugs or something equally cozy involved.)

A - Your current OTP

Probably still sticking with Flommy here, seeing as that’s pretty much all I write ship-wise these days, and I just... really don’t ship new things anymore. Also, I’ll often get slammed out-of-the-blue by my cartoon-’verse Will x Matt feelings, and just ugly-cry internally for a day because I love them a lot, so very honorable mention there.

M - Your favorite fanart or fanartist

Oh, I’ve found so many wonderful artists and works across the fandoms and years, it’s difficult to call out a favorite!! Still, I have some favorite characters and ships that aren’t commonly depicted in fan creations, so I’ll amend that fanartists who’ve given me excellent content in those niche spaces have my heart for certain.

E - Have you added anything stupid/cracky/hilarious to your fandom, if so, what

(This question slammed me with the reminder that about a decade ago, I wrote a bunch of song parodies and goofy scenes for one of my fandoms at the time [which was a crime procedural, for context], and I swear I’ve never been that hilarious ever since.)

In terms of more recent contributions, though… I feel like Merlyn Boys might count? I mean, at its heart it’s an emotional story of brotherhood, but I also made sleep-talker Connor Rhodes a thing, and brewed up a whole lot of amusing chaos in throwing these two characters together.

Camarilla-they just, as much as they NEED people and life around cause they still have mostly mortal minds, they also just, don't actively care that much. they basically probably make sure that the civilizations they look over don't completely destroy one another and that they have internet and a media to be on. Haha

Camarilla-it maybe creeps everyone out when Toki pretends to be a kid again but they also all get it like yeah. even tho like sometimes they'd probably feel too big to even fit in any 'human' form so like why bother when it feels so weird. but even tho MF holds on to the human traits the longest, Toki is the one who spends the most time actively TRYING to look human!

Tumblr's fave W.I.T.C.H. (comic) ship poll results are out!

There will be a poll with the CARTOON SHIPS soon, and after that we'll take the six most voted of each and have a final poll, but since I'm a comic fan I would like to comment on the results of the comic poll!

First of all, thank you all for voting! I’m always impressed by HOW MANY PEOPLE are around on Tumblr in the W.I.T.C.H. fandom, I don’t know where you are, who you are, what are you doing here, but it’s great that you’re still all out there!

Now here we go with the results - After the cut because it’s gonna be a long one

TARANEE / NIGEL

Yeah, I don’t know what it is, maybe it’s Nigel’s haircut, maybe it’s his brother being more handsome, maybe it’s the trauma given by Taranee’s mom slapping her daughter in front of everyone… But somehow this ship did not click and they received literally zero votes. Maybe next time!

Again, I don’t really ship the girls with anyone, but Joel - just like Peter - was in my opinion a chill dude, a good match for Irma, but perhaps more as bros than as a couple. Either way I’m glad they received some votes!

ELYON/CALEB

Their low score was expected, I know they are not very popular, yet they have a special place in my heart. I like that she is like the most powerful person in the universe and he is the brave knight who wants to protect but knows that he is as useful as a concrete parachute because she doesn’t need protection (however I hate that he's shirtless in this panel).

CORNELIA/ELYON

And now imagine a world in which Cornelia and Elyon both ditch Caleb to be together but Elyon doesn’t fire him from being the first knight, imagine the drama in Caleb’s head

CORNELIA/PETER

Yeah - I tend to like Cornelia more with Peter than with Caleb, not because I don’t like Caleb but because I find Peter a nice match, he’s another chill dude, with his feet on the ground, and I find he contrasts well with Cornelia’s status as high-society girl

CEDRIC/PHOBOS

My boys! Look what they’ve done to my boys! 7%!

Ok - a low score was expected here as well, because we all know that if this poll was about the cartoon they would have made everyone else bite the dust.

BUT, life goal 2: find a man who looks at you like cedric does in this panel

WILL / MATT

Ah, the drama. The jealousy. The boyfriend who plays in a boyband. Will/Matt had everything teenagers in the early ‘00 fangirled and thought was the relationship goal. Looking at it now at my dinosaur age, I wish they were both less jealous, especially Will (I mean, being jealous of Orube - an adult woman who doesn’t even consider you unless you’re a broody villain in prison who complains all the time - was a bit too much for me), but overall they are of course a key couple in the comic.

HAY LIN / ERIC

They are so cute, and I wish they had continued their relationship, and that maybe Eric would have come back one day!

And now we enter the TOP 3 with:

IRMA/CORNELIA

They fought really bravely - they've been at the top for a long time yesterday and I was really rooting for them, but unfortunately they got only third place this time. I have always liked their bickering and their dynamic, for me personally more as friends but I can see where you come from and that there could be different development. Well done girls!

CORNELIA/CALEB

Ah, the drama (2). Another key couple of the comic - I’m Italian, you know we voted for them to break up, so it won’t come as a surprise that I did not really enjoy this pairing. I kinda liked that there was something like this in the plot, but for me it had to be something destined to end. I loved their special, though - the art style was amazing and also there was a lot of Metamoor lore that I loved!

CEDRIC / ORUBE

EXCUSE ME

DID THEY REALLY WIN?!

Alright I'll try to stay fair and impartial - I mean, I have an entire blog mostly dedicated to these two tragic casualties so I don't think I need to say much about them except for AAAAAAHHHHH! THEY WON!

With the eyes of today and being a sucker for enemies-to-lovers novels, I wish that they had a proper ETL development and most importantly, that Cedric was given a proper redemption arc (through life, not through death) and that Orube was not just dumped in Kandrakar and made disappear. Lots of coulda, woulda, shoulda. Luckily, there’s fanfiction for that!

But hey, all they lost in the canon they won with this poll - with 19.5% of the votes Cedric and Orube are the most voted comic ship! Once again love wins over poor canon choices!
