"There is definitely a kind of wry smile to the work, but it takes place with a great shadow hanging over, I suppose, the end of the world kind of hanging over the album a little bit. But that is enjoyed in the best way possible."
Take Me To Church came out ten years ago today, on September 13, 2013.
It was Hozier’s debut single.
… the fuck?!?!?? HOW??? The talent, the vocals, the lyrics, the passion- and it’s not even the best song on the album????
Andrew John Hozier-Byrne, I salute you, sir. Truly the maddest of mad lads, a most sincere thank you to his parents and to the proud nation of Ireland, A+, no notes.
in talk how hozier says the sluttiest shit in the chorus ever and then follows it up immediately with ‘I’d be the last shred of truth in the lost myth of true love’…… .insane

‘talk’ by hozier has to be one of my favorite songs ever. LIKE SIR WDYM ‘I'd be the last shred of truth/In the lost myth of true love’ ?!!!
the allusions and the instruments… mmmm he is a fucking musical GOD. and ‘unreal unearth’ is just AHHH like none of his songs are skippable i have to listen to all of them every hour of the day
Ik this isn’t fully the correct interpretation of the song, the interpretation of Orpheus and Eurydice in Talk by Hozier is very interesting to me because the interpretation of Orpheus and Eurydice that I’ve often heard is more likely to deify Orpheus due to his attempt to lead Eurydice out of the underworld. This interpretation then proceeds to contradict this and reaffirm Orpheus’s humanity when he caves into the mortal temptation of looking back. This song, however, provides a different conception of the myth, instead deifying Eurydice by emphasizing Orpheus’s, “choiceless hope in grief that drove him underground,” showing his very human need to follow the divine through whatever trials necessary. This is further emphasized in the line, “the dreadful need in the devotee that made him turn around,” where Orpheus is clearly put in the very human role of the devotee whose lack of faith in the divine caused him to lose it all together. This makes Orpheus and Eurydice vaguely reminiscent of other stories, like that of Eros and Psyche. This is very interesting because gender. I do not know how to continue coherently elaborating on this. Oh well.

Summary:
With his dying breath, Chuck releases the Croatoan virus onto the world the Winchesters just tried to save from him. Fueled by rage, Dean rescues Castiel from The Empty, but the angel comes back with a screw knocked loose and most of his grace depleted. To both of them, Castiel’s confession before his death is best left unspoken of. In a world of destruction, chaos, and death, Dean has resigned himself to being chained by reality for the rest of his days.
That is, until Sam finds a lead on restoring a very weak Jack’s powers. The mission has Dean, Castiel, Jack, and Charlie criss-crossing the continental United States on the hunt for power and a cure for the virus that has destroyed civilization as it once was, all the while trying to repair the broken bonds between all of them.
The hopelessness this song transmits when it comes to the way the narrator views the world, and having no choice but to watch their love and wait for them to acknowledge them.
Also “innocence died screaming, honey ask me I should know” just makes me think about how Lucien watched Jesminda die for nothing, its a heartbreaking line.

This song is just the saddest song I have ever heard and the way the narrator still feels goodness towards the person who basically broke his heart just makes me think of Elucien okay? And Lucien did walk so far (and a lake of fire) to get to Elain. He basically is always running towards her, even though she doesn’t want to know him.
Sunlight
This whole song is an Elucien song through and through.
Talking about how if you have known abuse you will recognize love, he recognizes Elain immediately. His sunlight. At last can pin point that flame that was dormant in him since Jesminda died.
Him always sacrificing himself for the people he loves? Him putting Elain’s needs and choices before his own sanity by keeping his distance? Him leaving on a suicide mission to honor her vision?
Death trap clad happily ✨
If you read all this ily. I have even more songs but these are my current fav. (also these are my own interpretations and not necessarily everyones, I just love to think of them this way)
