You can try to spin it however you want but Alicent will never be considered a gray character. Not even the shitty show version of her.

Book Alicent - there is nothing to debate here. She is a greedy, manipulative upstart b*tch who got hers in the end. Evil stepmother and her evil sons perished. Happy ending. Bye bye.

Show Alicent - oh boy. Here we go.

Being a gray character often implies doing some pretty terrible or at least immoral things for the greater good. And a lot of other characters around them have a hard time understanding that what this gray character did was for the best. This character’s actions are often misunderstood and perceived to be done with selfish intent (and most of the time, greater good and selfishness overlap).

In what way does Alicent fit this description? In the show, she was driven by jealousy and resentment and done some pretty unnecessary and cruel things simply because she could:

1. Demanding that Rhaenyra’s newborn be brought to her immediately after birth. A disgusting display of cruelty. As a mother herself of four children, she surely understands the difficulty of labor, the vulnerability of a newborn baby as well as the immediate motherly instinct to protect her young (which is why Rhaenyra took the child herself, refusing to part with him).

2. Turning her children against Rhaenyra. As the Queen, and stepmother of the heir to the throne, it was her responsibility to attempt to forge relationships between her children and her stepdaughter, because this stepdaughter would one day be the reigning Queen and the fate of Alicent’s children would rest with her. But no, she was bitter, jealous and shortsighted and somehow thought that turning her children against Rhaenyra would somehow…what…do her family good?

3. Cheating on her husband by offering sexual services to a deranged clubfooted freak, in exchange for information. Call it whatever you like, but sexual favors in exchange for something is called “whoring”. I am not even going to debate this. No one forced her. This was her choice.

4. Taking a known murderer as her sworn shield for the single reason that he turned against Rhaenyra and that reason would benefit her.

5. Badmouthing children to their grandfather. The vendetta Alicent pursued against Jaecaerys, Lucerys and Joffrey is reprehensible. It was unnecessary, cruel and it certainly hadn’t done any good to anyone.

6. Showing up at Rhaenyra’s wedding in a dramatic manner and wearing the Hightower color for “war” simply because her ex-friend lied to her. Ironic, considering that she herself didn’t tell her friend that she was sneaking into her father’s chambers late at night, seducing him and getting him to marry her (I don’t give a damn that Otto made her).

7. Replacing the Targaryen heraldry with symbols of the Seven. Naturally, she couldn’t put up the Hightower symbols without “Hey look at me! I am committing treason!” written all over her face. Subtle, but it got the point across. And no, she wasn’t trying to “find comfort” or “honor her mother” or whatever bullshit TG stans like to invent. It was a strategic move through which she showed very clearly that she was turning her back on the House who made her everything she is.

These are just a few examples. If you take into account Alicent’s actions, none of them were done for the greater good. They served only her, and her own ambitions.

She married into the most powerful family in Westeros. She was a lady in waiting, a daughter of a second son from a low-ranked House with few prospects who was helping the Crown Princess dress.

When she married into House Targaryen, she was expected to remain loyal to House Targaryen. It was a privilege. One she completely disregarded in order to further the ambitions of House Hightower. It was Otto’s plan at first, but she pretty much took over in the long run. Simply because she was jealous and bitter. Because she didn’t know how to suck it up and accept that her father screwed her over, and her husband figured out their “master plan”.

Nothing about Alicent Hightower spells out “gray”. As much as the showrunners attempt to whitewash her, she remains the antagonist in this story. The war that started was one she had been nourishing for years.

Say what you will about Daemon but he is the very definition of “gray”. Whether or not his actions also benefitted him is irrelevant. His actions, although immoral and sometimes cruel, were for the greater good of the royal family, a House he belonged to, one he never betrayed. And despite the constant attempts of the showrunners to make him out to be the “bad guy” by pilling on him things he never actually did in canon, it still makes him look a whole of a lot complex and gray than Alicent ever will be.

Daemon is forever loyal to his family, and the House who rightfully holds the power in Westeros. Despite his actions, that makes him the anti-hero of the story. Alicent betrayed the House she married into, betrayed her husband, and committed high treason when she attempted to change the line of succession, for the sole reason that it benefitted her side of the family. That makes her the anti-villain (and I am being generous here, acknowledging the very few good qualities she possesses in the show, but her deeds are ultimately done in the name of evil).

And P.S: Let’s not pretend like the main obsession certain fans have with Alicent Hightower isn’t because she is portrayed by Olivia Cooke. If she were portrayed by a perceived-ugly/average actress, no one would be so quick to defend the character.

Benedict Cumberbatch was more measured about it, but he still said he was cynical about Elementary because it would lose the "male friendship" dynamic, which of course Johnlock shippers used against Joan Watson fans. she gets treated in-canon the way fandoms treat female characters that Threaten an m/m ship. it's like, "oh why don't you go sit in the corner and be pretty, misa, while the Men have intelligent conversation and pretend they aren't ten seconds from fucking each other, doesn't that sound nice?" it's infuriating. and MAYBE it's better now but i remember her getting treated the same way in fanfiction too, like we all need to do just as badly by our female secondary characters as fucking tsugumi ohba, but with the added insult of making her be alternately oblivious of the relationship between light and L or actively trying to sabotage it—incompetently, of course, because god forbid misa be allowed dignity or moments of cleverness.

she's one of the first characters I think of when I consider old school fandom misogyny. The annoying bitch and clingy crazy gf allegations were AFTER HER ASS. She's also a lot more intelligent than people gave her credit for, but most seem inclined to take the Very Biased word of our unreliable, narcissistic narrator and his homoerotic arch nemesis and claim that just because she's bubbly and into romance that she's also a complete moron. She is a goth bimbo icon who portrays what I think is one of the few callouts for stan culture and what parasocial relationships can do to both the stan and the idol. The fact that she is a toxic fan of Kira and also hot, funny, sociable is tragic in its own way, which I think the author did try to touch on but was too misogynistic too really get through. Of course, she was reduced to villain status by the fandom and anime alike because she got in the way of the supposed romance in their psychological horror anime.

I've seen some comments about the surgery "being planned" and how it doesn't make sense that they were making travel plans and whatnot. I just can't wrap my head around how these people don't understand that the fact it was planned doesn't mean it was planned 2 months or 3 years ago. The surgery could have been planned just 2 days prior. I think the palace emphasized that part to make it clear that it wasn't an emergency surgery. It's not like Catherine showed up at the hospital that day with abdominal pain and had to be operated on immediately. Obviously, the decision was relatively recent. We just don't know how recent.

The fact that they already had part of their diary scheduled doesn't mean much because often those plans are made weeks, and sometimes months, in advance. It's that simple, at least for me.

I'm officially fed up with the geriatric fans. They can say whatever they want, but their queen is irrelevant, and deep down, they don't even care about her. Their king is a temporary one who can throw his son under the bus a thousand times and still won't be more popular than him. Or than his daughter-in-law. Or even his grandchildren.

With the full cast (or at least, all of the major players) of OnK basically finally appearing in today’s episode, I’m pretty curious about the type of person whose a fan of which character. Specifically in the ‘shipping wars’ as they were. Spoilers for the manga up to chapter 116 under the cut.

More broadly, I kind of am curious about who exactly is a fan of Akane x Aqua and who is a fan of Kana x Aqua. I think the actual series itself is pretty unambiguous -- it pretty explicitly says that Aqua is, at the very least, smitten with Kana. But all that aside, I’ve seen a lot of Akane x Aqua stuff and people talking about Akane like she’s the “best girl” or whatever, and while I really love Akane as a character, I’m a little baffled by how much certain elements of the fandom like her.

So I’ve been wondering, kind of, why people consider her to be all that. And like, the biggest answer I keep seeing is her support of Aqua’s clearly deranged motives and plans, and her desire to basically be his sin-eater, and idk. It just strikes me as a very.. dude view to like her for that reason, like she’s his mom or caretaker or something, and it bothers me. From a personal development standpoint, Akane’s mostly kept Aqua in stasis by knowing he was using her as a tool and not caring. Akane completely sublimates her self and her life for Aqua, and that’s like, not actually a good thing. But it’s also not like, unhinged yandere type of stuff that would appeal to the dollgirl mental illness girlies.

It just seems weird that she’s lauded as being the best for her functionally erasing herself for someone who half-loves her, and it feels, at least to me, to be twinged with a sort of misogyny about what women should be. And I say this all as a really big fan of Akane. It’s just...odd, to me. idk.

People are losing their minds over this without thinking any of this through. Mostly because they don't understand the situation or Charles. Instead they're resorting to apocalyptic thinking that would never happen, e.g. Sussex balcony appearances, Archie & Lilibet attending the coronation, etc.

Basically everyone freaking out about this demonstrates that they don't know anything about Charles or his plans to slim the monarchy. Instead, someone who does understand the immediate situation would be River on YouTube. I don't watch River's videos, but someone posted a summary of it on reddit:

Twenty years ago, Charles would have been perfectly fine with Beatrice & Eugenie to have been downgraded to daughters of a peer. The person who wasn't down with that change was Queen Elizabeth II.

Guess what? Charles is in charge now. Not QEII.

I'm sure Charles thought the will Louise choose to use her princess title when she turns 18 drama was real cute. Likewise, I doubt he's going to endure that pr drama again in another two and a half years when James turns 18.

I'm sure when Charles issues his letters patent some of the same people whining about the situation now will be whining about how mean Charles is about taking James & Louise's title & styles away. And likely Beatrice & Eugenie's titles & styles as well.

Neither of those four will ever be working royals. Ever.

Does it make sense for Beatrice or Eugenie to be princesses twenty five years from now? When they were never working royals? When they are the first cousin once removed of King George VII? No, it doesn't.

Does it make sense for James or Louise to have the ability to choose to use an HRH style and prince titles 30 years from now either? Or whenever it suits them in the future? No, it doesn't.

This is why the letters patent that Charles will issue will be a big deal. It was never going to solely revolve around the Sussex kids.

In both Fire & Blood and in The Rise of the Dragon (left passages) Maester Norren’s(who was there with them at Maidenpool unlike Mushroom) testimony is used to support the claim that Daemon and Nettles were lovers.

Of course, I know that you are going to say that Maester Norren is the same one who mentions Daemon doting on Nettles like a daughter, but what man bathes with his grown daughter or someone who he sees as his daughter? I also know that you’ll spout out some bull crap about how in The Wheel of Time two friends bathed together and it was platonic. Don’t do that.

I want you to show me a piece of media where a father(or father figure) is bathing naked with his grown adult daughter and it wasn’t considered creepy and weird🙃

Would you consider it normal if Rhaenyra bathed with Corlys 🙃 Or better yet, would you take a bath with your father or a fatherly figure at the age you are now 🙃 Is that what you do for father daughter bonding time ☺️

Furthermore, in Fire & Blood, Lord Mooton’s brother(top right passage) makes note of how fond Daemon is of Nettles. Look, Kerrigan's character arc in Brood War was top notch it was S tier it was great I wrote a literal essay about how I do sincerely believe Kerrigan in SC1 + Brood War had a heroic character arc, and I am of course correct, and the canon agrees, BUT WE WILL GET TO THAT,

now initially ofc i was like naw SC2 never happened. Obviously I've softened on that opinion (but saying it never happened is funny. so is acting like everyone is missing the point of Kerrigan except for me. this blog is the space where i get to play up an extremely cocky persona ok)

SC2's general insistence (at least that's my first impression) on treating her zergness like a boring corruption and "ooh Kerrigan was good before but she's evil now" bothers me. like they do this to her instead of, oh I don't know, she was abused and exploited as a child fucking soldier, she latched onto the guy who 'saved' her and was too wrapped up in the exhilaration of having someone who 'cared' about her that she couldn't recognize she was being used as literal fucking bait, and then he LEFT HER TO FUCKING GET EATEN BY ALIENS, and by the grace of fucking god, those aliens saw her value and potential in a way no one else ever could, they elevated her, made her stronger, gave her the means to break off the shackles implanted in her skull (remember the Amerigo mission???), and from that point on, all the anger she'd been harboring from all those years of abuse could run freely, so of fucking course she became impatient and vengeful!

Yes, Kerrigan was extremely destructive, spiteful, cruel,even! But you think someone who's only ever known violence and death and cruelty could ever be anything else? are we so naiive as to imagine a perfectly human Sarah Kerrigan would not become the Queen of Blades Her fatal flaw is wrath, you see how quick she is to anger when she fights Tassadar. Hi PMI! I think comments were turned off on your question about a Harry/ MM reading so I couldn't reply direct. NBC news in the US doesn't seem to be biting on this car chase story. They even went as far as interviewing the cab driver who picked them up from a police station and said there were a couple cars following but he didn't think it was anything at all. The news story was posted as "Car Chase?". Most people in the US don't care about them. I know for myself I was very supportive in the beginning when they announced they wanted to step away for their mental health. It was presented as we aren't going to be royal anymore and seemed they were going to attempt a quiet life outside of the public eye as much as they could. I thought good for them but they have done everything but be quiet. The NBC story commented on this as well. They have been very public since the exit. And what happened to not using the titles? It was in bold on a screen behind her head for the speech she gave. It's getting more and more ridiculous at this point. Anyway, with the news story scoffing at their car chase claims I would be curious how they feel about the American press not going in their favor? Or was it an intentional trick for monetary purposes or do they really believe their own story? I guess at least on harry's part. Is this mental illness, he's still playing out what happened to mom in his head even if that's not the reality before him or is he in on the manipulative side of things and using his mom's death as a launching point to make money? That’s so funny that all their outrage has introduced people to Jonsa! I stick to Sansa fans and Jonsas because the rest of the fandom kinda horrifies me, so I really didn’t know what goes on beyond our circle. I understand why the average fan would be afraid to admit to reading Jonsa metas. The fandom is incredibly hateful of anything remotely Jonsa affiliated. While I’m sympathetic to that anxiety, I do have issues with the BNFs who apparently have entertained the idea or even think it will happen but never spoke up before. Catering to the hate is how we got to such a toxic place in the fandom and one of them just saying “actually, this meta has merit” could have changed everything. I will never forget this one GoT YouTuber who tweeted that we should be stoned in the streets. That’s how normalized hating on Jonsas was. She didn’t even feel the need to send a nasty anon. She just tweeted it out, knowing the climate of the fandom would permit it.

So it’s amusing but also tiring to know that fans will enjoy content by Jonsas, they might even believe Jonsa theories, but they’re too afraid to offer support to the people who work so hard to put it out there. Because of that, there’s not only targeted harassment but widespread derision of anything now perceived as a Jonsa theory. Even other Sansa fans call us deranged for thinking Sansa will go North and that she will be queen although these are longstanding theories with a lot to justify them—they don’t necessarily have anything to do with shipping!

But this fandom is a truly weird place and will never make sense. No one thinks twice about supporting people who genuinely want Sansa to end up with a grown man (whether it’s the man who married her to take her birthright or the one who wanted to rape her), but heaven forbid you interact with anything written by a Jonsa.

I’m glad you chanced it and have enjoyed the metas written by Jonsas though, anon. So many intelligent and hilarious people in this fandom. 💗
