eddie wasn't always like this, a beast hiding under the visage of healer. his time in the army changed him, in more ways than one. despite being just a medic, eddie was given the chance to be a part of a program. a super soldier program that he would be paid for, no matter the outcome. if it went well he recieved a decent paycheck, if he died, or worse, a hefty compensation was sent to his family. well, he survived, and it had worked. but now his animalistic instincts were harder to control, his body would react to his emotions -- becoming a slave to his flight or fight response. but now that he was out of the military, trying to fit back into civilian and life working for LAFD, he had to learn how to keep it stable. keep the beast tame when he thought back to that awful helicopter crash. his son is a huge help, one of his tethers to his humanity. and now he's found you, the moon in his sky, the one that isn't scared of the monster that man created.

05/04 | Class Feedback & Aims development

Going into this class I was not feeling very good about my formative draft and explanation of my aims. My aims all felt really similar and because of this, when filling out the template, I felt like I was repeating myself a lot. Talking to Andrew about this was really helpful for figuring out how to answer the questions in the template (the difference between learn, discover & reveal) and developing my overall aims.

One of my issues that I need to work on is practising writing everything in scholarly language. I often default to writing really casually in templates/class exercises and forget that I need to use more academic language for things like my aims.

Andrew helped discuss and differentiate my aims more so they had different focuses, some being more practise based and others more topic based. This helps my aims more fully encompass my project.

Revised aims

To challenge perceptions of female beauty and how that perception is represented in contemporary society.

Aspires to empower by means of the creative practise physically disabled women and to change their perceptions of self in a positive way.

How can the deployment of collage and abstract portraiture be used as a means to recalibrate the narrative around women living with disabilities.

Andrew also recommended I look into empathy machines and how these could work alongside my project.

Keyword Feedback

My feedback on my brainstorm was pretty positive and mostly focused on ways that I could narrow down my question and keywords. I feel at this stage it's quite hard to really narrow that down. I won't know until I'm actually making things about what is going to work in terms of practises and I don't really have any idea of where my work will lead me (e.g what's the final outcome?). I'm pretty experimental in terms of my processes and I let my making and prototyping lead my decisions, so it's hard to know what direction I will take until I start making my project. At the moment, I'm happy with these things being more open ended.

Annotation Feedback

Two of my reflections had accidentally been swapped on these annotations. Number 2's reflection goes with number 3 and vice versa.

This a really helpful task and now I know exactly what parts of my annotations I need to edit to make them stronger. It was good to see how another person understood my thoughts and what needs to be clearer so everything makes sense to an outsider.

Felt Portrait

Based on some of my drawings, I created this portrait from felt in the textiles lab. This is something I have been meaning to do for awhile and I finally found the time to get wool fibres and get back into the textiles lab. I chose pinks as the main mid-tone to colour to portray that feeling of love and inclusion, and use white and blacks as highlights and shadows.

My goal for this class is to create a textile collage that includes elements of tactility and interaction for the viewer. I really want to push outside my normal practise and comfort zone by working with texture and mediums I don't normally work with as a communication designer. The plan is combine this felt portrait with other textile based portraits and stitch them together to make new unique and disfigured portraits to represent disability.

Cookbook exploration

I decided to go op shopping for a range of cookbooks, as they have so many different types of cookbooks at an affordable price. I explored very recent cook books and older cook books. Even thought they all look very similar there were things that stood out and it was colour and the layout for me. The more recent books had electric colours expressed throughout the publication.
