On 2 October, 2006, 32-year-old milk-truck driver, Charles Carl Roberts, entered the one-room Amish schoolhouse, West Nickel Mines School, in Pennsylvania. He was armed with an arsenal of weapons including multiple guns, knives, and 600 rounds of ammunition.
He immediately took the entire classroom hostage before allowing the ten males and a pregnant teacher evacuate the small building. He then bound the remaining ten female hostages and boarded up the door with a wooden board he had carried along with him. He then called his wife and confessed that years earlier, he had molested two young family members and had recently been harboring sexual thoughts about young children again.
When authorities arrived, Roberts informed them that if they didn’t leave, he would kill all of the children in the schoolhouse. Moments later, authorities attempted to break down the door and as a result, Roberts began shooting indiscriminately. Five of the girls, raging in age from 6-years-old to 13-years-old, died from the gunshot wounds. The other five, albeit injured, managed to survive.
The bloody massacre ended when Roberts turned the gun on himself. An investigation revealed that Roberts had brought along lubricant and had most likely intended on molesting the young girls before killing them.

Trying to explain to someone who seems to have never been to the western US that I would never live in the US Midwest because it is too flat is pointless.
I've spent over 3/4 of my life west of the Rockies, there is absolutely nothing that would get me to move east. I need to know there is a mountain out there close to me.

While having lunch one day in the 1990s with Lewis Lapham, the editor of Harper’s magazine, and discussing whether it was possible to live on the lowest wages, Barbara Ehrenreich, who has died aged 81, leaned across the table and told Lapham: “Someone ought to do the old-fashioned kind of journalism – you know, go out there and try it.”
Lapham smiled, perhaps thinking about the exploits of earlier US writers, Jacob Riis and Upton Sinclair, and George Orwell with his 1933 book Down and Out in Paris and London. He suggested the person who should do it was her.
It seemed an interesting idea for Ehrenreich, who had a fair share of academic honours, and a PhD in molecular biology, but was at the time carving out a new kind of radical journalistic career. Lapham warmed to the idea that she should try living on the wages available to the unskilled in prosperous America.
Out of that lunch came Ehrenreich’s book Nickel and Dimed: Undercover in Low-wage USA (2001). It proved to be a bestseller, and the following year Granta published a UK edition with an introduction by Polly Toynbee, whose books following a similar path in Britain appeared in 1971 and 2003.
Ehrenreich’s quest began in Key West, Florida, in 1998, and ended in Minneapolis in the summer of 2000. Proposing to spend one month in different locales, she presented herself to potential employers as a divorced homemaker re-entering the workforce. Then aged 57, she was rather older than the other women who were also seeking work as house cleaners, waitresses or shop assistants. Her PhD would not exactly help, and so it had to be suppressed.
She knew that she was only visiting the world that others inhabited full-time. But she made it clear in her book that hers was not an attempt to “experience poverty”. She was certain that there would be no Shazam moment when she revealed her “true” upper middle-class self. She had advantages, of course: she was white, a native English speaker, and she had a car. But she learned that the only thing which made her “special” was her inexperience.
What emerged from her research was an impressive and heartfelt analysis of the dilemmas confronting American women as she encountered them working in dead-end jobs for $7 an hour, and an appreciation of why they did not fight for higher pay and better conditions for themselves and their fellow workers. She came to understand why poor, undereducated women, often carrying heavy debt burdens, could not risk their families being placed in a worse financial position by being summarily sacked for demanding more money or seeking representation by a union.
Born and brought up in Butte, Montana, a blue-collar mining town, she came from a family whose gospel had only two rules: never cross a picket line, and never vote Republican. Barbara was the daughter of Isabelle (nee Oxley) and Ben Alexander. Her father studied at the Montana School of Mines and took a PhD at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. He was a copper miner who became a senior executive at the Gillette Corporation. By the time the family had settled in Los Angeles, her parents had divorced.
Barbara studied physics and chemistry at Reed College in Portland, Oregon, graduating in 1963. Five years later she started on her PhD at Rockefeller University in New York City. With her husband John Ehrenreich, whom she married in 1966, she authored an account of the worldwide student movement, Long March, Short Spring (1969). It was followed by another co-authored study, The American Health Empire (1970).
In 1970 she gave birth to a daughter, Rosa (two years later she would have a son, Ben), finding herself the only white patient in the public clinic. Her labour was induced, she felt, because the doctor wanted to go home. That experience made her a feminist.
She found work in New York as an analyst in the city’s Bureau of the Budget and moved to an assistant professorship at the Old Westbury campus of the State University of New York. The move from being a graduate student to a proper academic job, baby in arms, brought Ehrenreich into contact with other women similarly trying to balance parenting, academic research and full-time teaching.
Increasingly she turned towards the experience women had of the American health system. It became her primary research interest, and a collaboration with Deirdre English, a feminist journalist and academic, proved fruitful.
For the remainder of the 70s, Ehrenreich began to carve out a presence at conferences, and she was able to place essays, op-eds and feature articles in leading American newspapers and magazines, especially those, such as Mother Jones, with a radical readership. On campus and at events sponsored by the US government, she felt increasingly confident with her marketable mix of scholarship, advocacy and activism.
The women’s health movement was attracting wider interest, and Ehrenreich’s For Her Own Good: 150 Years of Experts’ Advice to Women (1978) was detailed and written with passion.
Ehrenreich wrote or co-authored more than 20 books, on a wide range of topics. Virtually no feminist advocacy group founded in the 70s could do without her presence. When Michael Harrington formed the Democratic Socialists of America in 1982, he invited Ehrenreich to serve as co-chair.
It was in the pages of the Nation, and among the editorial board, which included Ehrenreich, Eric Foner, Lani Guinier, Tom Hayden, Toni Morrison and Tony Kushner, that the left’s stalwarts engaged with the most pressing issues of the day. And it was in the pages of the Nation that Ehrenreich published Rediscovering Poverty (2012), in which she argued that Harrington’s influential and much-admired work on poverty in the US, The Other America (1962), was designed to comfort the already comfortable and blamed those who were most disadvantaged by the US welfare system.
Ehrenreich argued that there was a double message in Harrington’s book: “we” – always the presumptively affluent readers – needed to find some way to help the poor, but that opened the floodgates to the idea forcefully urged by Daniel Patrick Moynihan in an influential report in 1965, that the heart of the problem lay in the “Negro family”, “clearing the way,” Ehrenreich argued, “for decades of victim-blaming”. Her relations with Harrington were difficult.
It was also in the Nation that in 2000 Ehrenreich published the essay Vote for Nader, which became one of the signal moments in the civil war between the American left and the Democratic party centrists, whose candidate, Al Gore, was in the process of losing his presidential bid to George W Bush.
In 2007 Ehrenreich donated an extensive archive of her career as an author, including correspondence and notebooks, to the Arthur and Elizabeth Schlesinger Library of the History of Women in America, in the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study, Harvard University.
She was divorced from John Ehrenreich in 1977. A second marriage, in 1983, to Gary Stevenson, ended in divorce 10 years later. She is survived by Rosa, Ben, three grandchildren and two siblings, Benjamin and Diane.

World Indigenous leaders meeting this week at an annual UN summit have warned that the west’s climate strategy risks the exploitation of Indigenous territories, resources and people.
New and emerging threats about the transition to a greener economy, including mineral mining, were at the forefront of debate as hundreds of Indigenous chiefs, presidents, chairmen and delegates gathered at the 22nd United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues.
“It is common to hear the expression to ‘leave no one behind’. But perhaps those who are leading are not on the right path,” the forum’s chairman, Dario Mejía Montalvo, told delegates on Monday as the 12-day summit opened in New York in the first full convening since the pandemic outbreak.
The longtime advocacy group, Cultural Survival, in partnership with other organizations, highlighted how mining for minerals such as nickel, lithium, cobalt and copper – the resources needed to support products like electric car batteries – are presenting conflicts in tribal communities in the United States and around the world.
As countries scramble to uphold pledges to keep global warming to 1.5C (2.7F) above pre-industrial levels by 2030, big business and government are latching on to environmentally driven projects such as mineral needs or wind power that are usurping the rights of Indigenous peoples – from the American south-west to the Arctic and the Serengeti in Africa.
Brian Mason, chairman of the Shoshone-Paiute Tribes of the Duck Valley Indian reservation in Nevada said that the 70 or so lithium mining applications targeting Paiute lands have come without free, prior and informed consent – what is considered the cornerstone of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. He described the lithium extraction efforts as being on a “fast track” to supply the Biden administration’s net-zero strategy to create a domestic supply of EVs . “It’s kinda just being rammed down our throats,” he said. “At the cost of Indigenous peoples once again.”
Gunn-Britt Retter of the Saami Council, an organization representing the Sami peoples of Finland, Russia, Norway and Sweden, said she had been raising awareness about what she calls the “green colonialism” driving harmful sustainability projects on Sami and Indigenous lands. The most recent example has been the Fosen onshore windfarm that was built despite a supreme court ruling in Norway in defense of Sami reindeer herding grounds.
“They look to us to carry the heaviest burden and it’s a disproportionate part of the burden,” she said of Indigenous peoples caught in the middle of a climate conundrum. “We need to reduce CO2 emissions globally, and we need to seek alternative energy sources, but we also need to protect the Indigenous cultures because we are the guardians of nature, which is part of the solution.”
Mejía Montalvo, who belongs to the Zenú peoples of San Andrés Sotavento in Colombia, said global climate talks have failed to properly include Indigenous peoples, yet at the same time, such dialogue has relied on a well of Indigenous knowledge systems to imagine future climate goals. “The issue of climate change and biodiversity cannot be resolved without the real and effective participation of Indigenous peoples.”
He urged the 193 member states affiliated with the UN, as well as its international governing bodies, to set a quota for actions that guarantee Indigenous peoples can take part in decisions affecting our planet, and in a way that puts them “on equal footing” with states – meaning, voting power, which Indigenous peoples lack.
The most recent example of the disparity came last fall in the historic “loss and damage” fund for vulnerable countries reached at Cop27 in Egypt. Indigenous peoples lacked explicit reference in the agreement, despite many world leaders, including the US president, Joe Biden, acknowledging the importance of Indigenous peoples in mitigating and adapting to climate change.
But there has been progress. The rights-based Paris agreement within the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) – the environmental treaty to combat the climate crisis – has provided a rare opportunity for formal Indigenous participation in the creation of the Local Communities and Indigenous Peoples’ Platform (LCIPP). The constituent body held its first meeting as a recognized working group in 2019, and engaged in dialogue with the Cop presidency last year in Sharm El-Sheikh.
Of the short cast of international leaders who spoke at the start of the global event on Monday was the first ever appearance by a UN secretary general, António Guterres, at a permanent forum opening ceremony. Also present was Deb Haaland, US interior secretary and tribal citizen of the Pueblo of Laguna, who received a standing ovation following her remarks where she acknowledged a litany of historic injustices against Indigenous peoples and a collective need to heal, saying Indigenous peoples must be brought into the fold in global human rights decision-making.
Lahela Mattos of Ka’Lāhui Hawai’i and a representative of the Global Indigenous Youth Caucus, urged the permanent forum chair to work with UN agencies like the World Health Organization to develop and implement comprehensive policies to better protect the safety of Indigenous women and girls as a way to protect the planet. “The destruction of and violence committed against our Earth Mother perpetuates, violence against Indigenous peoples, specifically Indigenous women who are protectors and bearers of life on this planet.”
The recommendation regarding “environmental violence” on Indigenous women and girls was first featured in a recent human rights treaty body outcome and represents one of the first fundamental links between human rights abuses and environmental catastrophe – a connection that most stakeholders grappling with the climate crisis have yet to make.
“Let us not forget that climate is the language of Mother Earth,” said Mejía Montalvo.

Will Brazil Destroy the Amazon to Save the Climate?
Brazil’s mineral wealth could power the energy transition, but mining is a very dirty business.
Whether it was gold, diamonds, or iron, the history of Brazil has been shaped for centuries by the hunt for minerals. Colonial fortune hunters and their legions of pick-and-pan-wielding slaves dredged up 800 to 850 tons of gold in the 18th century alone, filling the coffers of the Portuguese crown. In the early 1800s, gold financed the war chest of the Brazilian independence movement.
The search for minerals expanded in the 20th century, turning Brazil into a mining colossus. The country still draws waves of “adventurers, madmen, and starvelings,” as French anthropologist Claude Lévi-Strauss called prospectors. Many scour the Amazon for paydirt, so much the worse for the world’s largest rainforest and the Indigenous communities that depend on it for survival.
But the coming treasure hunt may trump them all. The 21st century’s prizes are cobalt, lithium, nickel, niobium, and the other critical strategic minerals of which high-tech gadgets and green energy technology are built. To produce an equal amount of power, photovoltaic generation consumes 40 times more copper than fossil fuel combustion and wind power up to 14 times more iron, according to a forthcoming Igarapé Institute report. To meet the burgeoning global demand for green energy technologies—including a massive switch to electric batteries—the World Bank estimates that 3 billion tons of critical strategic minerals will be needed by 2050.
That this scramble for resources is centered on the Amazon lays bare an uncomfortable truth: Climate policy and environmental protection are not the same thing, and as the energy transition gathers pace, that trade-off is becoming increasingly evident. Indonesian rainforests have been cleared for palm oil plantations producing biofuels, and West African forests are felled for wood pellets to heat green homes in Europe. Open-pit mining is one of humanity’s most ruinous industries, razing everything in its path—while toxic runoff, tailings, and waste products can poison rivers and wreak havoc for miles.
How Brazil handles the energy transition’s burgeoning hunger for resources will help determine whether our policies to save the planet will leave us with a planet left to save.

KALGOORLIE, Australia (Reuters) - A top mining conference kicked off in West Australia this week with an address by global investor and economist Dambisa Moyo, the first woman to deliver the keynote in the forum's three decade history.
Yet while Moyo had top billing, she is one of only five women out of 71 speakers due to address the event in Kalgoorlie-Boulder, a fact that has not gone down well with some delegates at a time when the mining industry faces scrutiny for a perceived culture of sexism.
"There are more speakers who have the name Peter, Mark and James than there are women at the whole event," Fortescue Metals Group Chief Executive Elizabeth Gaines, who addressed the conference on Tuesday, told Reuters.
A bombshell report published in June by the state government of Western Australia, home to the bulk of the country's iron ore industry, detailed cases of "horrifying" behaviour against women and criticised mining firms including BHP and Rio Tinto for overlooking criminal behaviour.
"If you had asked me at the start of my professional career whether I thought I would still be talking about gender diversity in 2022, I would have thought that we would be living it by now," Gaines said in her conference speech.
"Unfortunately, the reality is that we are still having the same conversations about equality that we had 30, 20 and 10 years ago," added Gaines, who was forced to appear at the event virtually after her flight was cancelled due to bad weather.
In February Rio Tinto published its own report which found that nearly 30% of women employed by the global mining giant had experienced sexual harassment at work, with 21 women reporting actual or attempted rape or sexual assault.
The mining conference is the first major industry event that international visitors and regional executives have been able to attend since the pandemic began, with a record of over 2600 delegates in attendance.
Jessica Farrell, assistant president at BHP Nickel West and another speaker at the conference, also criticised the lack of female participation at the event.
"The onus for that is on both the conference itself, but also on the members," she told Reuters.
Farrell gave evidence on behalf of BHP in the West Australia parliamentary inquiry into sexual harassment in the industry.
“You look at the information there and it’s just simply got to stop. And we are the ones that can make that change," she said.
"We want our industry to be one where all people can come together and feel safe and respected at all times, and perform at their very best."
In response to the industry allegations, BHP has committed to spending about A$300 million ($208.68 million) on safety at its camps and villages.
Australia accounts for about half of the world's iron ore exports, and women have long complained of sexual harassment in mining camps and offices.
The recent findings led top miners to set diversity targets, regulate alcohol consumption in camps, and increase safety checks at camps and sites.
But the sector's Australian workforce of 150,000 is still predominantly - five-sixths - male, a gender mix that's little improved since the industry's beginnings over a century ago.
Top miners last month identified labour shortages in Australia as one of the key reasons affecting production and revenue.
There’s intense demand for people with skills in statistics, analytics, robotics and artificial intelligence, Gaines said.
"Which is why it’s more important than ever that we equip the workforce of the future for these types of jobs and attract the best and the brightest minds from across the diversity of our population," she said.
