With all of their interactions, Iā€™m getting this feeling of ā€œFine, you can have your boy toyā€ from George in regards to Bryan. I donā€™t know what it is specifically, but thereā€™s this feeling that heā€™s only treating Bryan amicably because his daughter likes him. If it wasnā€™t for Finola, then George would probably be a lot more aloof.

i know I've mentioned my interpretation of mizu's gender a million times on here but i don't think i ever fully elaborated on it.
so on that note i just wanna ramble about that for a bit. basically, it's my reading of the show that mizu is nonbinary, so let me dig into that.
putting the rest under the cut because it ended being pretty long lol. also here have a cute mizu pic of her being happy and most at ease with herself, symbolised by her letting her hair down. <3 ok let's proceed.
Tumblr media
okay note that nonbinary is an umbrella term, and applies to a vast range of gender identities, but it's my personal preference to use it as is, simply because i'm not a fan of microlabels. more power to you if you are though, but anyway.
essentially when i refer to mizu as nonbinary it means that i interpret mizu as a woman, but not ONLY a woman. not strictly a woman. she is also a man. she is also neither of these things, she is something in between, while at the same time she is none of these at all. i've said as much many times, but i just don't want people to think that by nonbinary it inherently means a "third androgynous gender" that essentially turns the gender binary into a gender trinary. not only is that going against what the term nonbinary was crafted for (to go against rigid boxes and categorisation of gender identities), but also, not all nonbinary people fall under that category or definition, and that's definitely not the way i interpret mizu.
also, before anyone fights me on this, let me clarify further that gender means something different to everyone. it's not your biological sex or physical characteristics. but at the same time, gender is not mere presentation. you can be a trans woman and still present masculineā€”either because you're closeted and forced to, or because you just want toā€”and either way, that doesn't take away from your identity as a woman. same goes for trans men. if you're a trans man but you wear skirts and don't bind or don't get top surgery, that doesn't make you any less of a man. because gender non-conformity exists, and does not only apply to cis people! some lesbians are nonbinary and prefer using he/him pronouns while dressing masculinely, but that doesn't mean they're a man, or that they're any less of a lesbian. neither does this mean that they're a cis woman.
the thing about queer identities in general is that, like i said, they mean something different to everyone, because how you identifyā€”regardless of your biological attributes and fashion or pronounsā€”is an extremely personal experience. so a nonbinary person and a gnc cis woman's experiences might have plenty of overlap, but what distinguishes between the two is up to the individual. there's no set requirements to distinguish you as one or the other, but it's up to you to decide what you identify as, based on what you feel. either way, by simply identifying yourself as anything under the LGBTQ+ umbrella, you are already communicating to the world that you are not what a conservative, cisheteronormative society wants you to be.
which is why i find all this queer infighting on labels to be so ridiculous. because we're all fighting the same fight; the common enemy is a societal structure that divides us into set roles and expectations purely based on our biological parts. that's why biological essentialism in the queer community is a fucking disease. because by arguing that women are inherently weak and fragile and soft and gentle and must be protected from evil ugly men, while men are inherently strong and angry and violent and exploitative of women, these people are advocating for the same fucked up system that marginalises and abuses women as well as effeminate and/or gay men.
anyway. i'm going on a tangent. this was meant to be a blue eye samurai post. so yeah back to thatā€” the point i'm trying to make is that there's no one way to identify as anything, and everyone views gender in a specific way.
so with that being said, yes you can definitely interpret mizu as a gnc cis woman and that's a totally valid reading. however, interpreting her as nonbinary or transmasc also doesn't take away from her experiences with misogyny and female oppression, because nonbinary and transmasc folks also experience these things.
me, personally, i view her as nonbinary but not necessarily or always transmasc because i still believe femininity and womanhood is an inherent part of who mizu is. for example, from what we've seen, she does not like binding. it does not give her gender euphoria, but is instead very uncomfortable for her both physically and mentally, and represents her suppressing her true self. which is why when she "invites the whole" of herself, she stands completely bare in front of the fire, breasts unbound and hair untied. when she is on the ship heading to a new land in the ending scene, she is no longer hiding her neck and the lack of an adam's apple. we can thus infer that mizu does not have body dysmorphia. she is, in fact, comfortable in her body, and relies on it extremely, because her body is a weapon. instead, what mizu hates about herself is her faceā€”her blue eyes. she hates herself for her hybridised identity, hates herself for being a racial Other. hates that she has no home in her homeland. these are not queer or feminist themes, but postcolonial ones.*
* and as a tiny aside on this subject, i really do wish more of the fandom discussion would talk about this more. it's just such an essential part to reading her character. like someone who's read homi k bhabha's location of culture and has watched this show, PLEASE talk to me so we can ramble all about how the show is all about home and alienation from community. please. okay anywayā€”
nevertheless, queer and feminist themes (which are not mutually exclusive by the way!) are still prevalent in her story, though they are not the main issue that she is struggling with. but she does struggle with it to some extent, and we see this especially during her marriage with mikio, where we see her struggle in women's domestic spaces.
on the other hand, though, she finds no trouble or discomfort in being a man or being around other menā€”even naked onesā€”and does not seem stifled by living as one, does not seem all that bothered or uncomfortable navigating through men's spaces. contrast this to something like disney's mulan (1998), where we do see mulan struggle in navigating through men's spaces, as she feels uncomfortable being around so many men, always feeling like she doesn't belong and that she's inherently different from them. mizu has no such experiences like this, as her very personality and approach to life is what can be categorised as typically "masculine". she is straightforward and blunt. her first meeting with mikio, she tells him straight to his face that he's old while frowning and raising a brow at him. she approaches problems with her muscles and fists (or swords), rather than with her words or mind. compare this with mulan, who, while well-trained by the end of the movie, still uses her sharp wits rather than brute strength. this is a typically "feminine" approach. it's also the approach akemi relies on throughout the showā€”through her intelligence and persuasive tongue, she navigates the brothel with ease. mizu, in contrast to someone like mulan and akemi, struggles with womanhood and femininity, and feels detached from it.
thus, in my opinion, mizu is not simply a man, nor is she simply a woman. she is both. man and woman. masculine and feminine. she has to accept both, rather than suppress one or the other. her name means water. fluid.
as a side note, while i do believe mizu is nonbinary, i also primarily use she/her pronouns but this is a personal preference. i find it's easier, plus it's what the creators use, and because, in general, being nonbinary simply doesn't necessitate the use of they/them pronouns. nonbinary is not just a third gender. it's about breaking the binary, in any which way, and that's exactly what mizu does.
also, i'd also like to mention that one of show's head of story even referred to her with the term "nonbinary", rather than simply "androgynous" (see pic below). and it's possible this could be a slip up on his part, in which he believes the terms are interchangeable (they're not btw), but regardless i find it a very interesting word choice, and one that supports my stance.
Tumblr media
so anyway yeah that's my incredibly long rambling post.
TL;DR nonbinary mizu rights šŸ‘šŸ»šŸ‘šŸ»šŸ‘šŸ» congrats if you reached the end of this btw. also ily. unless you're a TERF in which case fuck off. ok i'm done.

Hi Jordan! Thoughts on the quote "Errors were made in the hours following King Viserys' death" in the new HOTD trailer. Seeing Luke's death as a whoops, usurping the crown, manipulating the masses, massacring people who disagreed and such.
Hello, my darling!
I think everyone in this bloody story has a habit of downplaying the sheer destruction they cause. But even for them, calling all the shit done in the immediate aftermath of Viserys kicking the bucket ā€œā€œā€œā€œerrorsā€ā€ā€ā€ is underselling it just a tad

Today I give you a Serizawa sketch, tomorrow? Probably more Serizawa tbh.
(ID under the cut)
ID: a digital pencil sketch (done in purple) of Serizawa Katsuya. Heā€™s drawn from his head to his hips.
He has an unsure expression on his face, eyes looking upwards and to the left, while his arm on the right is raised and hand behind his head. His other arm has a watch and is resting on his side.
Serizawa is wearing his white dress shirt, untucked, with the top buttons being undone. Some chest hair can be seen peeking through. His tie is also undone and draped around his neck. His sleeves are rolled up, exposing his forearms with hair on them. END ID

So glad the fandom has no control over the canon of this series, istg these takes are so bland and would ruin Jojo's.
#not to be That Guy but this person clearly didn't understand/care for the story Araki was telling with both parts 5 & 6 respectively#low hanging fruit finding some rando spouting off about how they want to scrap stone ocean but hey#no it would not have been more impactful for any of dio's kids to have ended the joestar curse actually#wtf are you on#''the joestars should have been completely helpless against their foes & fate unless they possessed some of their enemies' DNA'' šŸ¤¢#and although giorno reflects both dio and jonathan in his design his story and hos characterization the whole point of his adventure was#defining himself and achieving his goals without being held back by the entrenched workings of society/the mob + his past home life + fate#Jolyne's journey is (in part) about severing a fate she did not consent to and that had fractured her life seemingly beyond repair#giorno has nothing to do with her journey & he (having brando + joestar blood) is not ''more worthy'' of ending the curse#to branch off into yet another tangent: i've become annoyed by the constant nattering of fans regarding giorno not meeting pucci as#ungalo et al did. pucci's gravity wasn't gathering every single one of dio's spawn to one point#it specifically drew to him the children who had fallen into lives of disorder/dismay/disrepair. those who are lost#it wasn't just ''all of dio's blood whoops araki forgot giorno šŸ¤Ŗ'' it was following the themes of part 6#but of course many jojo fans are notoriously allergic to seeing the themes of each part & care more about fan service than anything else#might make a bigger post about this one of these days lol

Okay, so. I've got a LOT of thoughts about the Catholic Munsons post that's going around and I really wanna talk about it because I think it's SO interesting so I'm going to post about it here so I'm not clogging up the tags on that post (and I'm probably going to end up turning it into a little bit of a hellcheer thing because it plays a bit of a role in one of my upcoming wips).
Fair warning, this post is really fucking long and really fucking rambly. I had Thoughts and they. Refused to stop, so just,, bear with me!!
My Catholic father grew up around this same time near Cleveland, Ohio in a little town that's maybe half the size of what Hawkins is projected to be according to the fandom wiki page. He attended a parochial school for elementary and I think middle school, and the majority of his friends growing up were either Jewish or Catholic. When I asked him today about the distribution/ratio of Jewish to Catholic to Presbyterian in that area (since my research wasn't quite answering my questions), he told me that he was probably in middle school before he actually realized that there were other religions besides Jewish, Catholic, and whatever denominations the African American churches in the area were.
Because of this and the general notion that Catholicism is/has been somewhat more prominent in the northern/northeastern and, like, some of the more northern midwestern United States (if that makes sense), I've always imagined that Hawkins, being a decently sized (10-15K according to the wiki page) town pretty close to Indianapolis (around 80 miles, again according to the wiki page), would have a pretty solid Catholic community, so it's always kind of surprised me to see so many people write the Cunningham family, for example, as attending a Presbyterian church (although it is entirely possible, but more on that later).
Okay so now my actual thoughts on the Catholic!Munsons:
Since the pictures from the Munson trailer (and I love that it's been a year and we're still finding new stuff in there) show that calendar, we know that if Wayne did purchase it intentionally, then he's most likely gotta be actively Christian. However, I donā€™t see Wayne as the attending-mass-every-week type of Catholic -- he strikes me as Too Tired For That Shit. My personal headcanon is that heā€™s Christian, and was probably raised Catholic, but he only really attends mass for Christmas and Easter (not even for other Holy Days of Obligation). I guess to put it in shorter words, I see it as Wayne is definitely Christian, but heā€™s Catholic for convenience, meaning he believes in god but would prefer to do it privately and on his own terms (like, idk, praying on his own and displaying his faith through his actions) rather than having to deal with the church and its members, and he just continues to go to mass occasionally because itā€™s what he grew up with so heā€™s used to it and thereā€™s no point in fixing something if it ainā€™t broke.
But Eddie. Oh, Eddie. If Wayne grew up Catholic, then so did Eddieā€™s dad. Since Eddie's dad is, like, yā€™know, an asshole, I think heā€™d be the sort of Catholic thatā€™s a total hypocrite and gives the entire Catholic Church a bad name. Eddieā€™s mom could be Catholic, she could be Presbyterian, she could be Jewish, it really doesnā€™t matter (though I do see a lot of people headcanoning her as Jewish and I do kinda really like that headcanon).
If Eddieā€™s dad is Catholic, then itā€™s possible that Eddie could have attended a parochial school, but it could go either way. One: maybe he didnā€™t because his mom is Jewish/non-Catholic or just because his parents didnā€™t feel the need to send him to one, or two: he did attend a parochial school, at least for a little bit. However, since we know that Eddie and Chrissy attended the same school for middle school, there are also two ways that this can go. One is that Chrissy also attended the same parochial school and the talent show they talk about in the forest scene in 4.01 occurred at said parochial middle school. The other is that Eddie did attend a parochial school for a while but got kicked out and sent to Hawkins Middle School, where he then participates in the talent show. (I also think the concept of Eddie getting kicked out of a Catholic school and sent to a public school -- whatever the reason may be -- would add to his reputation and image as A Freak or Mean And Scary because did you hear that the weird new kid got kicked out of his other school? will always spawn rumors.)
In regards to Eddieā€™s personal beliefs, I think heā€™s kind of similar to Wayne, but also not. Whereas I see Wayne as ā€œCatholic for convenienceā€, I see Eddie as more of just ā€œChristian for convenienceā€, which to me just means that heā€™s not really sure what he believes, but when it comes down to it, heā€™ll say sure, I guess I believe that there is A God because itā€™s a little easier and a little less terrifying to believe in Something than it is to believe in Nothing. I donā€™t personally see Eddie as an atheist, because to me, he seems like he would be the kind of person that wants to believe in something, but he doesnā€™t like to spend too long thinking about what exactly it is that he believes in (in regard to there being a higher power) because itā€™ll send him spiraling into some sort of existential crisis. Which, same.
I do think that Eddie would become disenchanted with and disconnected from the Catholic church as an entity/community, because I definitely think he disagrees with a LOT of the stuff that the church preaches/believes. Also, since Eddieā€™s a big fat nerd and I headcanon him as a major literature buff, I think heā€™s definitely read the Bible (and probably the Catholic Catechism as well) so that he can 1) call out aforementioned hypocritical Catholics/Christians and 2) get inspiration for writing campaigns and/or songs.
Somewhat unrelated, but in the one (upcoming) fic I have right now that bothers to explore the religious sides of the characters, I have Eddie attending mass with Wayne for Christmas, but it's an anomaly for him and he grumbles about it the whole time. (It's for plot purposes and he doesn't like it.)
And then of course, Eddie's probably really interested in the stories of some of the saints and martyrs because some of them are pretty fuckin' metal. I also think he's super interested in religious iconography and metaphors for some reason, and loves finding those references and metaphors in songs and books.
Side note: I don't necessarily think that being Catholic is something that would have Othered Eddie (and Wayne) in Hawkins, especially if there is a strong Catholic population, but I do think that because of Eddie's non-conformist attitude and apparent general disdain for authority, he would have been Othered by the church (or rather its parishioners) and probably therefore deemed Freak, Satanist, etc.
I also think thereā€™s something to be said about Eddie being put in an almost Christ-like shepherd position with his freshman sheepies. Also, the sentiment expressed in Mark 2:17 feels vaguely Eddie-like. (For those not familiar, this occurs when Jesus is asked by the pharisees and officials why he associates and eats with tax collectors and sinners, to which he replies ā€œit is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick.ā€) However, I think that Eddieā€™s thing is less redeeming the sinners and more giving the excluded and ostracized a place to be included and treated well. But I digress.
Now, Chrissy. Dearest, loveliest Chrissy. While it is totally plausible that the Cunninghams are Presbyterian or Evangelical Christian or something else, miss girl has mega Repressed Catholic Girl Energy, so Iā€™ve been headcanoning her family as Catholic. I definitely think Laura would use Catholicism (or Christianity in general) as a large tool in her attempts to control Chrissy and dictate her life. So like, because Catholicism is more strict/regimented/structured compared to other denominations like Baptist or Presbyterian, I think Laura would try to use it to make Chrissyā€™s life more strict/regimented/structured. (And also thereā€™s the Guiltā„¢ļø. Chrissy seems like the type of gal to be crippled by Catholic guilt.)
Iā€™ve got this image in my head that I hope to be able to express in that upcoming wip I mentioned where Chrissy, once her mother (and Jason) starts trying to control her and obsess over her body, somehow equates the general ā€œbe Christ-likeā€ thing with ā€œTake this and eat of it; for this is my body, which has been given up for youā€ (which, again, for those unfamiliar with the proceedings of a Catholic mass, this is something that the priest says in regards to the Eucharist/communion wafers; itā€™s a reference to the last supper when Jesus broke bread and shared it with his disciples.) so she ends up letting her mother control her because thatā€™s what she thinks is the right thing to do in order to ā€œbe Christ-likeā€ and gain approval.
And then I know a lot of people headcanon Jason as the pastorā€™s son. In a story where they arenā€™t written as explicitly Catholic, I do like this headcanon because I think it would explain a lot about his character. However, in a setting where they are written as Catholic, I think Jason would be of the hypocritical sort. (Heā€™ll preach the Bible at anyone he disagrees with, but then will turn around and completely disregard anything said about premarital sex, love thy neighbor, love thy enemy, etc. Essentially the sort of Christian that twists whatā€™s said in the Bible to suit their needs and ignores the parts that they disagree with -- which is exactly the kind of person I think Eddie would read the entire Bible to be able to argue with.)
