Okay, but whump that comes from the environment/non-sapient sources is entirely underrated. Whether that be a factory designed to process robots processing a human (or humans), an isekae victim in a world that simply doesn't allow humans to exist, or simply environmental hazards like magic in the air or quicksand or brambles, all of these are excellent for whump, yet are (in my experience) rare to actually find in stories.

Dear Whumplr,
As a fellow (light) whump writer I have an opportunity.
I have recently been in a motor vehicle accident. I have a mild concussion, whiplash, and memory loss. I also have a black eye.
At the risk of sounding crass with these traumatic events, AMA.
Might as well get some use out of this whump fodder of a life event.
Sincerely,
Your neighborhood Grimm Monroe whump writer.
p.s. I THINK I have asks on? We'll find out.
p.p.s. If this is offensive or problematic in any way disregard and inform me and I'll take it down. Finding a way to cope with what's happened to me through a bit of folly might be helpful.
p.p.p.s. If you've also been in this situation, I'm so sorry. None of this is "fun". I give you my love and compassion.
p.p.p.p.s. No, really, any question. No limits. It's very light whump compared to the majority of narratives. But real experience is kind of cool to share and I'm game for it.

Do you have a least favorite form of whump? Or rather, what kind do you care the least for or just don't like?
Oh yeah for sure! There's tons of stuff that squick me out or just do nothing for me.
I'm not a fan of the bbu/pet whump stuff at all. I actively avoid it honestly.
I don't like intimate whumpers, creepy whumpers (honestly if it's got a whumper at all it gets knocked down a few levels on my enjoyment scale. i prefer whumperless whump).
I don't like heavy torture and gore.
I hate torture things involving the mouth or eyes or fingernails or feet.
I usually don't enjoy master/slave type of stuff but there have been exceptions where a fanfic was so well written I did enjoy the trope.
I don't like when the whumpee is so broken down they become simpering and eager to please their captor. Like conditioning. Don't like it. I like my whumpees defiant and tough.
Dehumanization is a no go
Don't like lots of blood. Like excessive amounts of it.
I don't like major character death UNLESS the character comes back to life. No permanent death please
Not a huge fan of medical whump but it can be okay
Long term captivity is in the same. Not my favorite but it can be done well.
I'm very specific which kind of stress positions I like and which I hate. There's really only like...two that I like
Not a fan of muzzle like whump. Gagged with like a cloth is fine but other than that I get squicked.

Whumpril 2024 - Day 14 - Urgent Care
I love whumperless medical whump SO much so this has been eating me alive
TWs: Surgery, awareness under anesthesia, gore, blood, stabbing mention
Tuesday night was going well, Liam thought. He'd only had to help with one surgery that night, and was forty-five minutes into his break when he was paged. "Emergency Room" flashed across the tiny screen.
With a sigh, he slid his hands through short black hair and stood. The rest of his mid-shift meal would have to wait. He was the only anesthesiologist on site at the moment, so whichever poor sap was showing up soon would need him there, just in case.
Pale blue walls passed by in a flash as Liam's shoes squeaked against the tile floors. His favorite nurse, Jesse, met up with him as he neared the emergency room where the others were waiting. "Doctor Beryl!" He said, stark white bangs pinned back, and nervous, light eyes meeting Liam's. "EMS is four minutes away. A young transgender male, severe blood loss reported, apparent knife wounds, it's looking bad."
"Well, good thing I already chugged half a monster, yeah?" Liam said, watching the dark glass of the sliding doors for the ambulance. "Were there any other victims?"
"No, no, just the one. And there's someone already on the way from the nurses' station to meet the...family member? Partner? Whoever the guy is." Jesse checked his watch as flashing lights and sirens screamed into the parking lot. "Oh—and you have your station set up?"
"Always. And we're still on for Sunday brunch? It's your turn to pick, Jess."
"You know it. My turn to pick, your turn to pay." Jesse's eyes crinkling with his smile was the last thing Liam saw before the patient was wheeled in.
A flurry of noise heralded the doors swinging open, and the EMTs rushed in, surrounding a gurney. Clothes had already been stripped away, leaving dark, scarred, bloodied skin open for scrutiny. Gloved hands and gauze kept deep, vicious wounds from letting blood rush forward. Long, black hair was tied back, and equally dark eyes were open and dazed. They wandered, lingering on faces, seemingly trying to follow the ping-pong match of orders and answers.
Liam fell into step with his colleagues as they swapped with the EMTs, replacing their hands and whisking the whole crowd down the hall to the trauma bay. They poked and prodded, setting IV lines and attempting to get answers from the man they worked on as they walked—no one seemed to mind when he couldn't quite answer.
The trauma bay doors swung open to let them into the pristine room, and Liam saw Jesse dart to the blood products. "Grabbing O-negative, two liters."
"Good, good, get the warmer going too. We don't need him going hypothermic." Liam called as the trauma surgeon started to scrub in. "And help Doctor Gene gown up."
He looked to Mariano then as the gurney came to a stop and Doctor Gene spoke up. "Doctor Beryl, start getting him under. His name is Mariano Ortiz."
"On it." Liam pressed sticky leads onto Mariano's skin, then pulled the oxygen mask from his respirator forward, catching Mariano's attention. "I'm Doctor Beryl, I'll be your anesthesiologist." Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Jesse double-checking the blood was being warmed and the infusion rate was set properly. "All you have to do is breathe and count backwards from ten."
Mariano didn't try to pull away, but Liam saw the peaks and valleys of his already-too-quick heartbeat quicken further. "Hey, hey, it's alright. You don't have to stay awake anymore." He said, pressing the cushioned plastic over Mariano's nose and mouth. "I'll be right next to you the whole time that you're asleep. Close your eyes, Mariano."
Mariano's expression never changed, but Liam smiled behind his mask as he watched him purposely take a deeper breath. Dark eyes grew visibly heavier, fluttering like his lashes suddenly weighed a ton. "That’s it. We have you." Not seconds later, he was asleep, and Liam shifted his attention to the monitors. He watched Mariano fall into deeper sleep, reaching to start tapering the sedative dose into something less heavy.
"Alright, he's under." Liam called, Doctor Gene began to take over and the techs began to swarm again. Electricity filled the air, everyone focused on their specific tasks, guided by Doctor Gene's easy demeanor.
"Analgesics being administered now, paralytic following."
"Let's find this bleed then, start the suction."
"Should we set up the curtain?"
"No, it'll be fine. We can't waste any more time."
Liam let it all fall away, his attention fixed on making sure that Mariano was breathing well as the others worked. Once his airway was secured and he saw that the respirator was doing its job, Liam sat back. Doctor Gene had the most intense job, but the junior doctors didn't call him the hospital's bloodhound for nothing.
Mariano picked a good day to get stabbed three times, at least.
He kept glancing between his three points of concern in regular intervals. Five seconds on his monitors, five on the actual machinery, then five on Mariano's face, always on the lookout for changes. It was routine. Familiar. It kept everyone who came through the operating room safe.
Thirty minutes in, Jesse spoke up. "...Does he look tense?"
One of the others hummed. "Maybe, what was his weight?"
"Two-seventy-one." Jesse answered. "Should we dose him a little more with the painkillers, Doctor Gene?"
"Yes, please. Ten more milligrams, to be on the safe side."
Liam gave the painkillers, watching how Mariano almost immediately started to relax again, then glanced back at the monitors. The numbers were looking good, he was breathing well, and color was even starting to return to his face with the fresh blood circulating through him. Liam breathed just a little bit easier.
Another page came through, almost making him jump. "Emergency Room" it read. "God dammit--" Liam groaned. "We have another coming in, someone keep an eye on the monitors, Doctor Gene knows what to do if he starts to decline."
He hurried out, tossing his gloves as he did in favor of new ones. The ambulance arrived, Liam accompanied the patient back, and after getting them under so that their broken tibia could be reset, he hurried back towards the first trauma bay. With the snap of fresh, clean gloves, Liam took his place at Mariano's shoulder again, and his heart almost stopped.
Almost-black met Liam's eyes, searching, pleading almost. Mariano was awake. His pulse was speeding up. Mariano was afraid. He needed to move. If he didn't fix this, his patient might be traumatized.
Why hadn't anyone noticed?
"Hey Mariano, I see you. We had another emergency come in, but I'm here again." He said, leaning closer and resting a hand on his forehead. His voice was far, far steadier than he felt. He shifted himself to block Mariano's view of his own opened, bloodied body. "Eyes on me, now, I'm the prettiest person here anyway. I'm gonna help you get back to sleep."
Dark eyes locked onto Liam's and he nodded at Mariano. "That's it, I'm going to take care of you, just like I promised." He reached his free hand over to the IV bag that held the anesthetic cocktail. "This is going to hit you in just a few seconds, close your eyes now."
Mariano hesitated, and Liam started sliding his thumb along his brow. Back and forth, like he was trying to soothe a kitten to sleep, Liam kept up the predictable, gentle motion. He eased the dosage upwards, eyes switching between Mariano's face and the monitor showing his vitals. "I'm going to try to make sure that you don't remember this, I know it's not fun." Mariano's eyes started to drift closed again, and Liam felt his own heart start to relax.
He only leaned back again with a sigh when he was sure that Mariano was properly under again.
"C'mon Beryl, you know I'm the real beauty queen here." Doctor Gene teased, before his voice softened. "Sorry we didn't catch that."
"Well--can't say I blame you, those stabs were deep. It happens." Liam admitted. "How's he looking?"
"Just about got him done, then we'll head over for a CT, make sure nothing else is waiting to rear its head. Are you coming with?"
"The other one's a broken leg, and Anise has it locked down until the on-call gets here." Liam kept his hand on Mariano's forehead, watching as Doctor Gene started stitching up the last stab wound. "So yeah, I can actually keep my promise, now."

Hiya what are your fav whump tropes ?
Ayup
Whumperless tropes for sure- I’m not big on capture or torture stuff
My favourite by the amount I write it is probably hiding an injury or sickness and collapsing, and just general slashing/stab wounds ☺️
The stuff I like to read though consists of disasters like fires, anything that counts as a procedure when the person is awake (setting a bone back, etc) and throw in a dash of superhuman/supernatural/animalistic person whump and it’s gold. (My character is a dnd triton so…)
Thanks for the question!

I want to do @whump-kia's whumperless event for July, and my vampire thing where I took y'all's input is my most popular story on here so far,* so here's another request for community input! July is a ways out, so I'll let this one run for a week!
*Yes, still very modest numbers, but improvement is improvement!

8. Opinion on whump without a whumper?
I typically prefer a whumper, but I can still enjoy whump without one! Angst, accidental falls, hypothermia, heatstroke...still so many possibilities. I've come to appreciate whumperless whump more since joining Tumblr.
13. Favorite type of whumpee?
Oh man that's a tough question - I love almost all of them. The most common thread running through the whumpees I write seems to be a protective self-sacrificial instinct. I love whumpees who, in the midst of their pain and suffering, are driven to protect their loved ones however they can. The "hurt me instead" or "do whatever you want to me but don't hurt them" type. That sort of deep devotion in a character is like catnip to me.
16. What made you create this blog? Do you have any regrets/things you wish you did differently?
I went through a few years where my initial shame of enjoying whump got really bad and had a significant effect on my mental health. Even though I knew the name and knew there was a community around it, I still felt wrong somehow. But looking at blogs helped because it made me feel less alone and I wanted to be closer to that feeling, so I rejoined Tumblr a couple of years ago. I don't think I have any regrets - I'm just glad that I made the decision because it's gotten much easier to accept this part of myself.
19. Opinion on all hurt no comfort?
If it's just a single scene or snippet I can enjoy it, but if it's an entire story where there's no comfort or happy ending I prefer to avoid it. Whump (and fiction in general) is a form of coping and escapism for me. There's enough uncertainty and tragedy in real life - I want a space where everything turns out okay eventually and my whumpees get to heal. I'm glad other people can find enjoyment in hurt/no comfort, it's just not for me.

6, 12, and 18 for the whump ask thing you recently reblogged 👍
thanks!
6. Do you listen to anything while writing/drawing whump? If it’s music, what genre do you typically listen to? The few times I attempt writing I tend to not listen to anything cause it's distracting, but sometimes I can do with instrumental music, like film scores or game osts. When drawing or making gifs I just listen to whatever I'm into at the moment which varies greatly (80s dance, goth rock, grunge, synthwave, game osts, whatever i'm in the mood for) and sometimes I listen to Podcasts (but what I listen to usually doesn't have anything to do with what I'm creating)
12. Favourite type of whumper? Can I say none at all? lol no I do love environmental/whumperless whump a lot, but I also like me a classic bad guy. i like them to have a reason for doing the hurting (whether its a personal grudge, a need for information or even a hired rando). when it comes to personality i'm cool with a lot, ruthless, quiet and cold, by the book, reluctant, talkative, humorous/sarcastic, all good for me
18. Do you prefer visual whump or written whump? Any reason why? Mostly visual (as in moving picture). the combination of seeing and hearing what happens just does more for me i think. most of my favorite whump is from TV, movies or video games. But there's definitely a lot of art and books and fic i like a lot too

6 and 8?
6. Do you listen to anything while writing/drawing whump? If it’s music, what genre do you typically listen to?
Yessss I cant draw whump without listening to something in the background, all sorts of things, youtube commentary videos, documentaries, cartoons, creepypastas, music, podcasts
For writing tho any spoken words distract me completely, so I usually try to find some instrumental only-music, Ive been struggling with finding things that keep my brain active enough tho, would love some tips!
8 Opinion on whump without a whumper? Ex: Whumpee falling into an ice-cold river and getting hypothermia.
This is the kind of stuff that I love to see happening to characters I'm already invested in, but it wouldn't necessarily draw me into reading a story based on it. Whump with a whumper remains my fav but I feel like these "whumperless whump tropes" like accidents, illnesses and hypothermia would be excellent additions to traditional whump stories.

Hai, random question regarding ur new event as an event hoarder /pos ^^ I was wondering how strict or lax the "Whumperless" part of the event you'd like it to be? I understand and respect that the point is to have NO central Whumper/someone doing the hurting, but I was curious as to, for example, if interpreting the alt prompt "drugged" as Whumpee goes to a bar and gets a drug in their drink by an unknown assailant who never returns to lead them into farther danger, making the fic mostly about Whumpee dealing with said effects instead of a kiddnapping spin, would be okay? Similarly, I was wondering if a Whumpee being left in the middle of nowhere AFTER being tortured by a Whumper and forced to contend with the elements or a Whumpee who is a soldier in a war would be okay? Basically, if Whumpee is hurt by another person but they arent a focused on character or did the hurting in the past (like whump recovery) is that considered allowed within the spirit of the event? Sorry for the word vomit, I think this event is a cool idea and I want to make sure that I follow it to the guidelines, as Whumperless whump isn't a relatively huge part of the community nor events. ^^
Thank you so much for looking at this ask and for making an event, I can't wait for it to be happening!! Have a great day/night/whatever, and keep being awesome!!
Hi! Thank you so much for the ask!
So I'll be honest, "Drugged" was a typo--it was supposed to be "Mugged", as it is on the image part.
However! There is a main prompt involving poison. I'll answer your question based on that one, and the answer is yes, absolutely. The goal is to have no Whumper actively, on screen, whumping someone--the whump comes from the situation or environment. If someone slipped a pill into your character's drink, and that becomes the fic, that's totally okay (and I would love to read that, actually!)
In that same logic, your other question is also a yes. As long as your whumpee isn't actively being tortured on screen, and the focus is on dealing with the elements of being abandoned, you're in the clear. That's definitely environmental whump, if I do say so myself.
Thank you so much for reaching out! And have a good one, right back atchya :D

Whumptober #8
Trope of the day: "definitely just a cold"
_
His head was spinning as he got up from the chair which was why he held onto the desk for a second, hoping none of the others had just witnessed their teamleader being unable to move.
To his own surprise, no one seemed to notice and everyone left the room. Not exactly everyone because the team's medic stayed behind, apparently waiting for someone to close the door.
"You really think we didn't notice, huh?" Teamleader's eyes shot up and met the eyes of the other man. "You look like shit, honestly. And we could see how much you were sweating and shaking at the same time."
Teamleader shook his head, even though he had to smile a little bit. Seemed like he wasn't good at faking everything was alright.. or his team just too observant - he couldn't decide which one it was.
"Listen, everything is fine. It's just a cold, I need some rest which I will get as soon as this job is finished." He was so convinced of his words that he let go of the table and took a step backwards, hoping to end this conversation and to leave the room.
As soon as he moved, he got dizzy again, now too far away to grab the end of the table which was why he was staggering backwards before hitting the wall. Before he knew what was even happening, Teamleader felt his head spinning, his mouth was dry and his body too hot and too cold at the same time.
With a small "thump" he sat down on the floor, involuntarily, but tired to play it off. "See? Just a cold", he mumbled and closed his eyes for a bit, he felt nauseous.
"Yeah.. Definitely just a cold", medic said as he crouched down in front of the other man, carefully touching his forehead. "I need you in my room. Now."

Is there any whump that makes you uncomfortable? For me it's women or people of color getting hurt. Basically, groups of people who were/are more vulnerable to getting hurt in real life. I actually have to turn away or fast forward through the scene. I don't know if it's just me though.
Oh there's definitely whump that I'm uncomfortable with. There's nothing triggering for me but I do have tropes that I don't enjoy or squick me out. And this is all just my personal preferences. No dis to anyone who enjoys these things I just get icked out by it.
Box Boy/BBU/Pet whump
Anything with the mouth freaks me out. I dont mind when the character is punched and has a bit of bloody lip but like mouth torture? Big nope.
Eye gore. I don't mind a bit of temporary blindness as long as it is indeed temporary and isn't gorey but anything else is a no go.
Lots of blood. Lile excessive amounts of blood. One of the quickest ways to shit off any whumperflies I may have
Amputations. Lile purposeful someone cut it off kind of amputations.
Tenderness by the antagonist to the whumpee. Like when they comfort them and stuff. Don’t like that. Weirds me out.
I tend to enjoy softer whump things more than the really violent stuff and I like whumperless whump more purely because a lot of the popular whumper tropes make me uncomfortable.

A Real Intro... Finally
I've had this blog for just over a year, but I've never formally introduced myself. As the URL would imply, the name's Sydney. You can call me Sydney or S. The pronouns be she/her and they/them.
I have OCs. They are the Rainbow Sweater Squad. Don't ask about the name: I was going to write a back story for it and then didn't. Maybe I will someday. I'm going to try to pull together a new info post for them soon. There's a rough timeline for them, but no real sequential order. My stuff is mostly whumperless whump, such as illness, injury, emotional whump, and disasters.
I'll be honest, I'm not too reliable on posting. However, I try to hit @brutal-nemesis's Whump of The Month every month. I also like creation challenges.
I interact from @cakepursuedbyabear and post fanfic and other fan content on @fanbloggingpursuedbyabear.
Okay now I do the thing where I tag the cool whump blogs I like.
