Please!! (When you have time or feel like it🫶) more of Bee’s crimes!!! I like being reminded that she’s just as unhinged as Konig!!! Let women commit crimesss
Bee has a pirate radio station where she just plays random music that her weird hacker friends make. None of it is technically good, but it is technically illegal for her to be playing it. You can only listen to this station while in a mile radius of her house, but plenty of people have driven past her little house and been assaulted by hyperhouse and techno-metal. She's not sorry. She has been fined by the FCC.
Bee has committed identity theft before.
The only thing that stopped Bee from putting trackers on König's phone when she first met him was the logistics of getting his phone. Not the legality, or the invasion of privacy. She didn't know how to get his phone for long enough to get trackers on it. She did put keystroke trackers on König's computer when she fixed it that one time. (She gets pinged when he searches keywords)
Bee cannot legally enter Canada.
Bee is no longer allowed to teach internet safety to the local high school students. The administration was forced to weigh the pros and cons of teenagers being able to bypass their firewalls, and also there was perhaps a small (itty bitty, really Bee can't be held responsible for a hack this teeny weeny) issue with the grade-book software getting hacked after her lessons.
Sometimes when Bee goes to the coffee place in town she just logs onto the free wifi and snoops through people's computers. Beware of open networks...
Bee uses linux and her computer is completely unusable to anyone but her. König tried to look something up on her laptop and gave himself a migraine.
Bee once contacted her senator's wife and mistress because he wouldn't take her calls. Direct action.

Stop the World and Melt with You//Eddie Munson x Fem!Reader
Tumblr media
✨One minute, you're bawling your eyes out in 2023, and the next thing you know--you're at a gas station with guy named Eddie, in a town that feels stuck in the 80's. The thought of traveling back in time hasn't occurred to you yet; maybe because it's way more than that.
Series Masterlist
✨Based in an alternative universe, I think the only triggers are that reader is terribly sad in the beginning and is having a hard time remembering things. Slow build. Mention of dad passing away. Word count: 2.9k
A/N: I'm not sure if I will turn this into a series, or if it will stay as a little weird piece floating in the ether 💕 (update: link to part 2 above)
----------
So, there you are, crying in your truck. Not that pretty kind of sniffling where a single tear runs down your cheek and your eyes glisten, but massive, snotty, choking sobs. Gasping, wailing, shoulders bouncing, wringing your hands on the steering wheel. You were crying so hard, you missed your exit. At least, you must have, because the exit numbers jumped from 12 to 14 in the time it took for you to wipe your eyes, mascara stinging, your throat raw. The song playing is full of hopeful love (Melt with You by Modern English) and you scream at the radio like a banshee, scrambling to turn it off.
You slow down and get over to the furthest lane, hands at 10 and 2, eyes squinting, ready to take that exit 15 to Empress Landing Road that your GPS keeps squawking about. The rain is coming down in sheets now, mirroring the tears that have run down your neck and soaked the collar of your gray sweatshirt. You approach the bend and take the exit, winding your way around to a two-way stop sign, and that’s when you lose all of the bars on your phone and a flat message cross the screen says: NO SIGNAL.
“What the hell,” you mutter to yourself, making sure no one is behind you before you reach over to grab your phone and bring it to your face for a closer look. No cell service and no wifi; perfect. Just what you were hoping for on this day of our lord, the worst day of your life. Not the actual worst, but close: when you lost your dad six months ago to cancer, that was the worst. It would all be a walk in the park from there for the rest of your life as far as bad days went.
You keep waiting for your phone to find it’s way back to the network, but you drive a couple miles and still nothing. The windshield wipers are flapping, and your head is throbbing to the beat. It doesn’t make you feel any better to look down and realize you’re almost out of gas and are about two minutes from coasting on Empty. You’ve got seven dollars in your wallet, but then there’s a couple hundred in your checking, and also the emergency credit card with an impressive $500 limit. All of that needs to be stretched out for another week until next payday.
Coming up on your left, you see a sign for “Gary’s Garage” right next to a double garage mechanics shop and a two pump gas station. You’re not sure if you have the luxury of pricing gallons of gas right now, with the way you’re about to be stuck on the side of the road, but out of habit, you check the prices on the sign anyway.
Wait...you try to focus your eyes, thinking maybe you’re seeing things, or perhaps one of the numbers on the sign had fallen off. There is no way gas is 5.7 cents a gallon, that’s insane. You figure maybe someone just put and extra zero in the front, so you hit your blinker and pull over your old truck bouncing down through a large puddle.
The rain shower lets up, thankfully, because there is no awning over where you need to pump your gas. You get out and pause at how old the gas tanks are. Nothing digital, all black and white flip numbers like on those old alarm clocks, and no where to pay outside. After looking at both of the tanks and scratching your head for a good minute or so, you turn to go inside when you see someone walking over from the garage.
He’s about your age, wearing dark gray coveralls that match the color of the overcast sky, long, curly dark hair tied back in a ponytail, and a blue banana on his head. He’s wiping is hands on a rag as his eyes widen at you, getting closer, close enough for you to see that his lips are soft and full, and his eyes are dark but kind.
“This way, follow me,” He tells you, motioning with a twitch of his head, cleaning down between the webs of his fingers as he goes.
You do as he says, in through the glass doors to a small space with two vending machines and a desk with an old fashioned cash register. You notice that the soda machine offers the drink TAB, which is a diet drink you haven’t seen around since you were just a kid. On the window sill behind him, there is a tiny black and white TV the size of a toaster with a vintage daytime soap opera on.
He reaches into a brown lunch sack on the window sill and puts a pretzel into his mouth. “How much do you want?” He asks, the pretzel drying up his mouth so he can’t enunciate as well. He grabs for an open can of Pepsi sitting near the TV to wash it down, and you can see that the creases on the skin of his hands seem to be stained with grease and dirt. “Sorry,” he apologizes. “I forgot to eat today.”
“It’s alright,” you see that the name on his coveralls reads: Eddie. “I just realized that I forgot to eat today, too,” you say, putting a hand on your stomach.
His tongue slips along his teeth under his lips to make sure there is no pretzel goo stuck behind as he looks at you, waiting for an answer to his question, but then he pulls a box of tissues out from under the counter and passes it to you.
“You’ve got…” he points to his eyes and makes a circle around one of them, and then points to you. “...from the rain probably but…”
Oh god, no. You realize that you never took a look at your face in the rear view before you got out of the truck. You’re so used to paying at the pump and getting the hell out of there without having to talk to anyone, you weren’t prepared to meet a cute guy in overalls.
“Um, thank you,” you say, self-consciously, sticking the tip of your tongue out to moisten the tissue so that you can wipe under your eyes. You look around and don’t see any type of reflective service to check and see if you got it all, but Eddie assures you:
“You got it,” he says with a wink. And then he stands there waiting, and you forgot what he asked you again, but finally…
“Gas! Right,” you look out at your truck, knowing what a gas guzzler she is. “Do you take debit cards?”
His forehead tightens, not sure he heard you correctly. “We take credit cards, sure.”
He reaches down to the same shelf where the tissue box had been and pulls out an archaic credit card machine that presses the credit card numbers onto the receipt with carbon paper. They haven’t been around in...20 years? Maybe more?
You wonder how this mom and pop, completely analogue service station, has been able to stay in business by keeping everything so simple. He sees that your hand trembles as you look through your wallet, realizing you don’t have the cash you thought you had, and then touching the credit card, trying to do the math in your head.
“We also take trade,” he tells you, matter-of-fact, tapping his finger on the wood table top, as if that’s another world wide form of modern currency.
“Trade?” Your mouth drops open a bit, your eyes shifting around, hoping he doesn’t mean sexual favors. But for him in particular, though, you might consider it.
“If...if you don’t have cash, I mean. You can just give me something in trade for the gas.”
You can’t tell if he’s serious or not. “I’m sure your boss wouldn’t like that.”
“How do you know I’m not the boss?” He asks, squaring his shoulders, crossing his arms at his chest, but then a little smirk pulls up one side of his mouth. Slowly, his smile widens, disarmingly, and it helps you to drop your guard.
“God, I’m having the worst day,” you confess to him on an exhale, your shoulders sinking, angry at yourself for feeling tears building in your eyes again. “You ever have one of those days when everything feels off and everything goes wrong?”
“Yeah,” he scoffs. “I’d say that’s pretty much every other day for me,” he gestures around with his free hand, and then he steadies his eyes on you and nibbles at his lip.
You choke back a sob that is lingering in your throat.
“Listen, what about this,” he is making a little circle on the table with his finger as he talks. “What if I get your gas for you, and then you let me take you to dinner?”
Your head snaps up, your bloodshot eyes meeting his. “Like...a date?”
He shrugs. “Or, just two people eating together. Whichever sounds better to you, princess.”
You inadvertently make a sloshing sound in your throat, jerking back a small spasm of tears. “I have to...I have get back home.”
Eddie’s eyes look momentarily set with sadness, but then he blinks, wetting his lips with his tongue.
“Where...where is home?” He asks you
You tilt your head as you try to remember, and it feels like trying to recall the colors of a marble lost down a dark well, never to be seen again. Was it red and green or blue and yellow? Did it have sparkles or was it clear with yellow speckles? You know there are so many possibilities in your brain somewhere, but you can’t find it.
“I..I don’t remember,” you cringe as you say it, placing your hand on your forehead to see if you have a temperature.
You snap your eyes up to his. “Hold on, just a second,” and then you pop open the snap on your wallet, your eyebrows knitting together as you turn it horizontally to grab your driver’s license.
“Wait, it should be right here,” you realize that that your ID isn’t in your wallet, neither are your credit cards or your cash. You spread the folds of your wallet open and shake it out on top of the counter, waiting for things to fall out.
Something yellow softly trembles from one of the slits in your wallet folds, and then flutters to the desk, landing between you and Eddie:
It’s the flattened flower from a daffodil; its the only thing in your wallet.
You and Eddie both stare at the flattened flower, and then Eddie picks it up, bringing it to his nose:
“This,” he raises his eyebrow, pinching it delicately, presenting it out like a prize. “This we can trade for. Daffodils don’t grow here this time of the year. This will get you a full tank.”
***
When you open the door to return to your truck, there are little kids scampering away, and one has your license plates clutched to their chest. All of them have long hair and over sized clothes that don’t fit, and the one with the dirty Hawkins basketball jersey seems to growl at you as they scamper across the road.
“Hey!” You scream. “Give that back!”
You start to head after them, but they are already disappearing into the corn fields and Eddie puts his hand on your arm. “Foreigner plates are always the first to go, sweetheart,” he tells you, as if it should be obvious. “They are worth a lot in trade. I thought I would have time to warn you.”
As your brain is trying to assess the situation, you come back to something he said. “Um...foreigner? Is that what you call someone who lives one state away?”
Eddie opens your gas cap and sticks the nozzle into your tank, and then he gives you a smile that you can’t read. “Which state are you in now, princess?”
“Well,” you rest your thigh against the bumper, forehead creased in thought, reaching one finger up to press thoughtfully against your mouth. There is a huge chunk of your memory, of the past 24 years of your life that you simply cannot recall.
“Hey, it’s okay,” Eddie reaches out and squeezes your arm. He ducks his head down to try and get you to meet his eyes. “I’m sure it will all come back to you.”
“I feel like…” you search his face; it’s familiar in a way that makes you feel comforted, even though he is a stranger. “...like I was upset about something, but now I can’t remember what it was.”
He releases your arm, lifting his chin with a grin. “Well, that’s good, isn’t it? You just need some food and some rest.”
“Sure, if you say so.” you are bothered, but you also like the feeling of not having anything weigh on your mind. You’re just in this moment, here with Eddie, in this strange place, without any plates on your vehicle.
Eddie pumps your gas for you while you sit with your legs dangling out of the passenger seat to talk to him.
“When you check in at the motel, let Claudia know that you’re a friend of mine, hopefully she’ll give you a deal,” Eddie tells you. But, then he squints, “Mmmmh, or she also might charge you more, depends on her mood.”
“Motel?” You cock you head, confused.
“Oh, well,” Eddie sticks his free hand in his pocket. “I figured you’d be staying at The Grove because it’s the only motel in town.”
You remember a motel, that rings a bell. “Yeah,” you tell him, feeling a little better, like maybe things were coming back to you. “I am staying at a motel. I just forgot the name.”
You reach over to grab your phone so that you can put The Grove Motel into your GPS when you realize it’s not on the dash mount, and you can’t find it anywhere. With a curse, you realize that those kids must’ve taken it. Next to you on the seat is your suitcase, and your overnight back with toiletries and snacks is on the floorboard, and you are grateful they didn’t have time to take those. Your phone was insured for theft, and so you figured you’d just deal with that back at the motel.
“Okay, well, thank you,” you say to Eddie as you shut the heavy metal door to your truck, manually rolling your window down to continue talking with him. “I guess I’ll...see you later? You said that the diner is next door to the motel?”
Eddie nods, wiping his hands again. “It’s just a block away, connected to the bowling alley with the big, neon sign. You can’t miss it.”
He also said he would keep an eye out for your phone (in his head, he’s picturing a handheld landline with a cord, and doesn’t know why you had one in your truck) and your plates, in case anyone tries to trade them for gas or garage services; this happens a lot, apparently. Eddie gave you directions to the motel, which was basically a straight shot a couple miles down the road, and then you waved goodbye out the window as you pulled back onto the highway. You swore you turned the radio off earlier, but the same song Melt with You by Modern English is playing again, and you give it a curious look before turning the dial to find another station. Static and then...Master of Puppets by Metallica...a news story quoting Chief Jim Hopper...strange electric buzzing...the song Running up that hill (make a deal with god) by Kate Bush….more static...and then what sounds like two young kids talking back and forth on their walkie-talkies.
You snap the radio off just in time to make room to pass by 4 young kids hurrying along on their bikes. Ahead of you on the horizon, the sunset glows pink, purple, and orange, and a strange certainty washes over you, assuring you that you’ve been here before.
Eddie stands in the same place, watching you go, excitement and fear gripping his heart. He stuffs the rag into his back pocket and goes to twirl one of the rings on his hand like he normally does, but then he remembers they are all in a dish inside the shop.
A tall, scruffy, older man with a full head of gray hair and a mustache walks over from the garage to stand next to him. He’s in a pair of jeans with a dark blue, button-down shirt that has “Gary” embroidered on the pocket.
“Well, I’ll be damned. Another one,” Gary says, crossing his arms over his chest.
Eddie nods his head, silently, squinting as tiny flecks of raindrops hit his face, watching your brake lights tap as you pass a group of kids.
“She doesn’t remember anything,” Eddie says, biting his cheek in thought. “Just like the others.”
“She will,” Gary assures him, clapping a hand on his shoulder. “When the time is right, it will all come back to her. Poor thing.”

me with my llau master doc in my hands shaking... it's me again... i honestly don't really have any questions or anything other than: i desperately need to know if you have some ideas for scott's design. golf boy with his little gay golf club breaking in zombie brains ykwim.
P much down to answer almost any Last Life Apocalypse related questions (granted they aren't about Scar and Joel... i wish to keep them a secret for last)
Admittedly haven't touched much on the GGG side of the au! But I can give some notes on them and what not!
NOTE timeline order goes like: 3L > LimL > LL [DL events are not a part of canon but hints to relationships from it are implied throughout the story]
Scott (alongside Joel and Jimmy) grew up on the rich side of town (during the 3L > LimL period) and would grow up to be entrepreneur of some sorts with the founding of the Scottage Club and the revival of the GGGs. Imagine his wardrobe like Ryan Evans from HSM, lot of blue/white/gold. His current outfit I imagine it's like Akechi's Persona 5's casual wear: White button up, blue woollen vest with diamond patterns, beige pants. He'd have a gold chain brooch in the shape of diamonds to represent those crystals he has on the head of his mc skin. Yes imagine him with a golf club.
Pearl close overseas friend of Scott's. Hated eachother as kids during LimL but reconnected overtime and are besties through networking. Archaeologist who does taxidermy sometimes as a hobby, she's odd. Pearl would be the exact opposite colour palette of Scott's lots of red/black/gold. No clear image in my mind to what she'd be wearing, preferably pants, preferably something relatively good yet refined to walk around in the cold for. Most notable feature though being a giant wolf's cloak that can be either worn as a jacket or a cape - picture the kinda coat Beowulf Skullgirls has but a tad longer.
They've survived relatively long throughout the events of the Last Life apocalypse because of Pearl's knowledge to survive from her site visits as an archaeologist and Scott's large access to resources in the mansion enough to combat the Shade-E-E's gas station in terms of supplies. (Shade-E-E's has radio and wifi reception, the Scottage Club has a full wine cellar for molotov cocktails. pick your poison)

So I just found out you can buy ancient rotary phones like from the 1910's AND THEY STILL WORK?!
Of course they still work. The infrastructure for landline telephones hasn't actually changed in the last 110 years. The most that's changed is at the phone's individual level where the connectors changed. But the actual phone network is still the same. It would have been too expensive to overhaul it and render millions of phones inoperable for no reason.
The advancement in phone technology was about making them smaller, cordless and then mobile. And even then, mobile phones and Wifi largely use existing radio technology.
You'd be surprised just how much shit is backwards compatible.

alright Specs give me a lesson on WiFi Standards
I can't wait to see the brilliance you'll share<3
-anon
Interesting choice, as this is the less interesting option. But if you insist /nm
You've most likely heard of Wifi 5 or Wifi 6, maybe even wondered about Wifis 1, 2, 3, and 4. In the fancy IT speak, these are lumped together with the number 802.11 (eight oh two dot eleven). There are a lot of them, but the ones that made the press are 802.11a, b, g, n, ac, and ax. All but n, ac, and ax are out of date, with n on the way out.
802.11a and 802.11b are sister standards. But I suppose first I need to say that Wifi communicates on a frequency of either 2.4 gigahertz or 5 GHz. The best way to think of these frequencies is like radio stations - each station is called a channel. There are a lot more non-overlapping channels at the 5 GHz range (non overlapping reduces noise and signal degradation), but the US government uses them so your signal gets less priority over, say, air traffic controllers. 2.4 GHz has fewer overlapping channels, but you're not fighting the government. As I recall, 5 GHz travels farther, but that isn't always necessary. If you're sitting right next to the router, for example, you don't need such a strong signal to get to your internet box.
802.11b was released shortly before 802.11a, and it is b that took hold. Once I give the numbers, you may find that confusing. 802.11a can transmit at a speed of 54 megabits per second in the 5 GHz frequency. 802.11b transmitted at 11 mbps in the 2.4 GHz frequency. Slower, but at a different frequency. So why did b win out? Because it got there first and was a lot cheaper than 802.11a.
5 years later, in 2003, 802.11g was ratified. It transmits at 54 mbps on the 2.4 GHz frequency. Because it's at that frequency, a device that is set for 802.11b - an older device, by definition - can communicate on an 802.11g network, and vice versa. The only problem is that the slowest device sets the speed, so it doesn't matter how great your network is - if your device can't take the speed, you're not going to get it. 802.11g also uses a different "language" to encode signals, in addition to the one that 802.11b uses. Since b can't understand the one that g uses, b devices can't tell if the router is busy, so the signals could get mixed up. This is solved again by, the slowest device sets the speed. The access point will revert to the language b understands, and ALL devices connected to it won't go any faster than 11 mbps. Not ideal, but reduces costs when a network is updated. So network administrators can choose either faster devices at a greater upfront cost, or spread that cost over a few years but suffer overall slow speed across the network.
We stuck with g for a good long while before 802.11n was introduced, under the name Wifi 4. 802.11n transmits at 600 mbps in theory, 300-450 in practice, at both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, which means it's backwards compatible with 802.11a, b, and g. It gets that speed by being able to transmit more than one signal at a time, through a thing called MIMO (multiple in, multiple out - I say "meemo" but "my mo" is also acceptable.) That's mostly a fancy way of saying there are more antenna on an access point than just one. An 802.11n device can support up to eight antennas, with four going in and four going out.
In 2014, 802.11ac, or Wifi 5, was released, and was the first standard that used Gigabit ethernet. 802.11ac transmits at 6.9 gigabits per second (nice) in theory, 1.3 in practice, at 5 GHz. ac doubles the amount of antenna, and also lets up to four devices transmit on each antenna at a time. It also has a fancy little thing called beamforming, which means the signal goes in a straight line to the device, instead of being broadcast everywhich way.
Wifi 6, or 802.11ax, was released in 2019, and is still making its way across the world. 802.11ax goes at a max speed of 9.6 gbps at both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. It also uses another encoding language, which means any devices on 802.11b, if those senior citizens are still around, are SOL. Which is fine - let grandpa rest. 802.11ax lets more devices connect to the router at once, and lets more devices transmit at once.
You regret choosing this one now, don't you. I much would have preferred to talk about motherboard connections - I don't have to have a textbook next to me for that.

Phone addiction and ADHD
Phones give a mind numbing constant stream of a dopamine high like doom scrolling. If you're sucked into this habit for hours on end every day, it can mess up your brain's dopamine regulation and then everything that's not your phone seems dull, not as stimulating and boring, so all you want to do is go back to that rush, and pick up your phone again.
With someone with ADHD, the brain already struggles with dopamine regulation for focus and motivation and so, I think we're especially susceptible to phone addiction and the repercussions are perhaps more pronounced than a neurotypical person.
I've definitely noticed a concerning change with my attention span. I didn't get a smart phone until I was 19 and as a kid, reading books was my favorite thing to do, now it's like when I sit down to read, it's like I have to uncomfortably force myself to read a page or two and I start wanting to pick up my phone again because it's so much more stimulating. I don't have to have any patience, any song, show, book, movie or thing I want to learn about is all instantaneous. I've never had issues with impulsivity, poor decision making and poor time and money management (at least minimally), but when my brain has become so used to being relaxed and used to "imaginary" money just disappearing and objects appearing at the door a day later, is an unprecedented dopamine addiction.
My phone is great when I use it MINDFULLY not MINDLESSLY. I find I actually find more enjoyment from my phone when I'm intentionally doing something specific like drawing, reading or listening to music. Getting sucked into a doom scroll or WAY off track, just makes me feel dull, and sad that I let it happen for the umpteenth time.
For the past few years, I've experimented with finding activities to replace phone time. I got a Sony ereader Pocket Edition ERS-300. Why get an old device made in 2009 when I could have gotten the latest Kindle? I didn't want something with wifi or ads, so, I prioritized simplicity and I miss devices with tactile buttons for sensory purposes. I got a handheld radio to use before bed and when I wake up instead of being on my phone. I also got into retro gaming because it's better than being online and on social media. I decided to take up origami again like when I was a kid as well as baking, playing with my dogs, drawing, crafting...etc. At first it was difficult to remember what I did for fun as a kid, what did I do before my smart phone? I'm glad I'm figuring it out though.
The best thing I can do right now is make my smartphone "dumber," like turning on greyscale, uninstalling distracting apps and only leaving the necessary "tools" and turning on Do Not Disturb. Basically make it boring. I did order a Light Phone II (I couldn't get my childhood flip phone to connect to modern cell networks), so when it arrives, I'll see if that helps since keeping my phone in "boring" mode seems to be a struggle to stick to. It's like I'm so used to it being stimulating, I feel like it SHOULD be that way, I expect it to and being boring feels wrong but I guess that's just another symptom of the hold it has on me.
I realized I had a genuine problem when I spent like 8 hr on my phone then sat down in bed and I felt like I didn't know how to exist without me staring at it. Like a substance addict's brain being buzzed and never satisfied without the thing that makes it feel that way.
This has been a genuine issue for me and my ADHD sister as well, so, I'm just making this about my experience and I hope to support anyone who might be dealing with the same issue.

135, 119, 100 :D
100: whats your most listened to playlist?
my general listening diary which i've been curating since i was 16 lol
135: what’s a music pet peeve of yours?
hm. intentional record crackling on a track. awful stuff, especially if it actually runs throughout and you can hear it. really can't stand it. there's defs other ones but that one just seems to be the one on my mind rn
119: What music did you grow up on?
putting this last bc i wnna put a post cut here cuz im just gonna go on awhile SORRY this one means a bit.
i'm putting * next to my all time albums here
for the first 13 years of my life, i would say it's 70/80s chart hits through my parents, and modern pop radio on my own. mostly the latter. the first song i ever became aware of was nelly furtado's maneater when i was 5. most of what i really did grow up around was pop radio like your generic local station shit. then my parents got cable when i was 7 which introduced me to more... curated things? i'm gonna speak in australian pay tv networks and artists here i'm sorry i hate speaking like this. but [v] (may it rest in peace for its shuttering is easily one of the worst losses i've ever experienced) was like my slow awakening to my more "alternative" tastes than the general packaged pop i'd been so used to at that point, in the way it was mostly just 2008-12 peak era (imo) triple j buzz bands and that kind of thing. artists i really remember getting into that time because of that were the presets – who'd just released apocalypso* at this point – and ladyhawke* – who had just released her self titled debut (another all timer.) very related is that modular (the label that issued these albums, and of tame impala fame) genuinely had some fucking top tier albums out in 2008, like van she's v and another all timer and pitchfork best new album in ghost colours* by cut copy. insane year for them, but back to me. i was really getting into listening to the weekly top 40 on radio around this time too. my local station was mostly syndicated programming from 2day from a certain hour. like their usual weekdaily thing was their morning show which i have never heard for some reason, then it was just local in house selected garbage that i have permanently seered into my mind now until 3 when they started the pre-record syndicated stuff like hamish and andy or kyle and jackie o. which after 5pm is when The Fucking Goods happened and you got the ill-fated hot 30 which was pretty much became a ritual thing for me when i was 9 until it was canceled when i was 11. on weekends i would listen to my beloved take 40 which i continued doing up until i was 12 and gained a proper internet connection. when i think back on this time period it it's kinda crazy how much music i was listening to and the fact it was just something i did and didn't know anybody else who was like crazy deep in music like this. but it did give me my extensive knowledge of 2000s/early 2010s popular music which i've been curating in a playlist since i was 15 that was just a comfort list turned mutant.
but the turning point in my taste came when i was 12 and got an non-poor person internet connection aka wifi, an ipad and a dream. at this point i was slowly moving away from charts and into full albums – something i never really did. one of the first albums i owned was rogue trader's here comes the drums* and that until katy perry's teenage dream were like the only albums i'd heard back to back. first album i brought in 2013 was ellie goulding's halcyon* and i pretty much burnt it to my pc and listened to it and it only for like 6 months of the year, before buying calvin harris' 18 months* on itunes when they did that u have 3 singles from this album u can buy the rest for $6 thing. by this time i was starting to get on socials and drift into fandom. one of the first ones was dan & phil who are big fans of muse and spoke about how origin of symmetry* is their fave album by them and i was like, damn i gotta check this out. from that point onwards for another like 6 months was the only album and first discogs ever sought out and listened to. through being in that fandom i started getting into music circles which happened right at the biggest turning point of my life. by mid 2014 i'd started to venture into the 2014 tumblr-core stuff; sky ferreira, vampire weekend, the strokes, grimes and twigs, and my first super hyperfixated musical act, foster the people. i was on indie twitter by this point and consumed by it and had completely stopped and refused to listen to top 40 radio which i still don't do. by 2015 i'd basically crafted my alternative taste and begun collecting vinyl. here's my top artists from my old last.fm to illustrate where i am as a 14 year old:
Tumblr media
it pretty much stayed like this for somewhat unchanged until 2017 when i got a spotify subscription and started listening to radiohead a fair bit lol. by early 2018 i was starting to listen to fantano-core stuff and by extension got into post-punk, iceage-ajacent bands which led me to posh isolation and started my interest in noise/ambient stuff. late 2019 i started listening to the brixton windmill-ajacent bands like black midi and bc,nr and started using rateyourmusic and just discovering things over time.
im sorry that this is so long and i dont expect anybody to read this lmao 😭

Your cellphone will blare Wednesday afternoon [in the US, Oct. 4, 2023] to alert you of a national emergency – but don't worry, it's only a test.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency and Federal Communications Commission will broadcast an alert to cellphones, televisions and radios around 2:20 p.m. ET Wednesday to test the nation's emergency alert systems. There's nothing you need to do to receive the alert.
Opting out of the test, though, is a different story. The test will evaluate the United States' Emergency Alert System and Wireless Emergency Alerts, both of which were designed to notify the public in case of major events.
The cellphone alert will arrive with a loud tone, which some people may want to avoid. According to the National Network to End Domestic Violence, alerts like these can inadvertently expose survivors' hidden cellphones, which they may rely on for help.
Here's what you need to know about Wednesday's test and how to avoid receiving the alert.
How to block the emergency alert test:
The cellular broadcast system will send out emergency alerts starting at 2:20 p.m. ET for a duration of 30 minutes. During this time, all WEA-compatible wireless cellphones should receive the alert.
To avoid the alert, you can:
Turn off your cellphone.
Put your phone on airplane mode.
Use WiFi only.
According to FEMA, cellphones that are turned off for the entire 30-minute test period should not receive the alert message once it's turned back on.
Your cellphone may not receive the alert if you are outside active cell tower range or if your wireless provider does not participate in WEA.
Some cellphone settings include options to turn off emergency alerts. Opting out of these alerts will not silence Wednesday's national test, FEMA says.
The National Network to End Domestic Violence recommends survivors turn off hidden cellphones during the test.

Are EMF’s safe? (come, child, ruin your night)
y’all ready for this? I’m not anti-5G, btw turn your wifi off before bed and maybe stop keepin’ ya phone so close all the time
But like... why, though?
I've had my suspicions about cell towers being hazardous to health for a few years now and felt convinced enough to not bother researchin' it for confirmation. Now that I'm blah blah blah, I decided to actually bother. Since it got kinda heavy, I had to ask myself if I should put in hella more effort creatin' a damn research report of sorts for y'all asses present the info for others like it's a damn PSA. And my conscious won. T~T
But like... what, though?
A base station (aka: cell phone tower) is that shit you see everywhere but never notice. It's usually tall af and has panel antennas on it. It's "used for the transmission and reception of the radio signals between the mobile phones and the network." The problem with 'em is the electromagnetic field (EMF) their equipment can give off... for half a mile. 😐
In short, they've been found to cause health problems. Like cancer. 🤷🏿‍♂️
Fun fact, panel antennas can be installed on the roof/side of buildings that may be directly across the street from someone's workplace... with the antenna at their elevation. 🤷🏿‍♀️
Real Quick
For those who don’t trust EMF-Portal, it (sometimes) has links to the study/article. Full-text PDF can be requested directly from the authors on ResearchGate.net’s article for the study. Full-text PDF can (usually) be found online in English and German with the right search.
5 Studies
V/m = volts per meter 7191 cancer deaths were selected according to the above mentioned criterias out of a total of 22,493 cancer deaths. The most significant causes were lung cancer (19.6 %), stomach cancer (14.1 %), prostate cancer (12.6 %), and breast cancer (11.5 %). The mean electric field intensity of the measurements in 2008 was 7.32 V/m, varying from 0.4 to 12.4 V/m. At a distance of up to 100 m [328.08 ft], the absolute number of deaths was 3569, (49.6 % of all deaths), the mortality rate was 43.4 persons per 10,000 [0.43%] and the relative risk was 1.35 in relation to the mortality rate of 32.1 per 10,000 [0.32%] inhabitants of the entire Belo Horizonte municipality [in Minas Gerais, Brazil]. A mortality rate of 34.8 per 10,000 [0.35%] inhabitants was observed for the residents living within 500 m [1,640.42 ft] of the base stations; this rate decreased for residents living farther from the base stations.

The result of the study [of 967 permanent residents] shows that the proportion of newly developing cancer cases was significantly higher among those [320] patients who had lived during the past ten years at a distance of up to 400 metres [1,312.34 ft] from the cellular transmitter site, which has been in operation since 1993, compared to those patients living further away, and that the patients fell ill on average 8 years earlier. In the years 1999-2004, ie after five years' operation of the transmitting installation, the relative risk of getting cancer had trebled for the residents of the area in the proximity of the installation compared to the inhabitants of Naila[,Germany,] outside the area.

9 cancer cases were observed in the first period 2000 - 2004 and 14 cases in the period 2005 - June 2007 among [1,283] residents living within a radius of 400 m [1,312.34 ft] to a mobile phone base station [in Germany (Hennen, suburb of Iserlohn, Westfalia)]. The mean age of disease onset was 59.2 years in the first period and 59.3 years in the second period in comparison to the expected value of 66.4 years evaluated from the Saarland Cancer Registry. The authors concluded, that a statistically significant increase of cancer incidence was observed 5 years after the base station has been started operating.

Area A: ≤ 350 m / 1148.3 ft from base station Area B: > 350 m / 1148.3 ft from base station Of the 622 people of area A, 8 cases of different kinds of cancer were diagnosed in a period of one year (from July 1997 - June 1998). The cancer incidence rate was 129 cases per 10,000 [1.29%] persons per year in area A compared to 16/10,000 [0.16%] in area B and 31/10,000 [0.31%] in the town of Netanya [in Israel]. Relative cancer rates for females were 10.5 for area A, 0.6 for area B and 1 for Netanya. The authors conclude that the study indicates an association between increased incidence of cancer and living in proximity to a mobile phone base station.

Took forever to get this damn infographic just right. >.>
A long-term study was conducted in Germany to investigate the influence of a mobile phone base station on neurotransmitters under true-to-life conditions. µW/m² = microWatts per square meter 24 out of 60 participants were exposed to a power density of < 60 µW/m², 20 participants to 60 - 100 µW/m², and 16 participants to more than 100 µW/m² . The values of the stress hormones adrenaline and noradrenaline grew significantly during the first 6 months after starting the GSM base station; the values of the precursor substance dopamine substantially decreased in this time period. The initial condition was not restored even after 1.5 years. Due to the not regulable chronic difficulties of the stress balance, the phenylethylamine levels dropped until the end of the investigation period. The effects show a dose-effect relationship and are situated far under the valid limit values.

While I did find 17 different figures for it, I’mma save myself the bother of describin’ dat noise and not include ‘em thanks~.
But what does the FCC say?
FCC.gov’s conclusion seems to be that they’re generally safe for civilian life as long as you don’t get close and aren’t directly in front of the antenna’s trajectory (don’t climb a fuckin’ tower or enter those rooms/buildings). A very “it’s fine” set of conclusions tbh. Hella contrasted by other sources.
Nonetheless… below is the index...
FCC’s RF Safety FAQ Index:
What is "radiofrequency" and microwave radiation?
What is non-ionizing radiation?
How is radiofrequency energy used?
How is radiofrequency radiation measured?
What biological effects can be caused by RF energy?
Can people be exposed to levels of radiofrequency radiation and microwaves that could be harmful?
Can radiofrequency radiation cause cancer?
What research is being done on RF biological effects?
What levels are safe for exposure to RF energy?
Why has the FCC adopted guidelines for RF exposure?
How safe are mobile phones? Can they cause cancer?
How can I obtain the specific absorption rate (SAR) value for my mobile phone?
Do "hands-free" ear pieces for mobile phones reduce exposure to RF emissions?   What about mobile phone accessories that claim to shield the head from RF radiation?
Can mobile phones be used safely in hospitals and near medical telemetry equipment?
Are wireless and PCS towers and antennas safe?
Are cellular and other radio towers located near homes or schools safe for residents and students?
Are emissions from radio and television antennas safe?
How safe are radio antennas used for paging and "two-way" communications?   What about "push-to-talk" radios such as "walkie-talkies?"
How safe are microwave and satellite antennas?
Are RF emissions from amateur radio stations harmful?
What is the FCC's policy on radiofrequency warning signs?  For example, when should signs be posted, where should they be located and what should they say?
Can implanted electronic cardiac pacemakers be affected by nearby RF devices such as microwave ovens or cellular telephones?
Does the FCC regulate exposure to radiation from microwave ovens, television sets and computer monitors?
Does the FCC routinely monitor radiofrequency radiation from antennas?
Does the FCC maintain a database that includes information on the location and technical parameters of all the towers and antennas it regulates?
Which other federal agencies have responsibilities related to potential RF health effects?
Can local and state governmental bodies establish limits for RF exposure?
Where can I obtain more information on potential health effects of radiofrequency energy?
The Government Accountability Office (GAO) prepared a [2012] report of its investigation into safety concerns related to mobile phones.  The report concluded that further research is needed to confirm whether mobile phones are completely safe for the user, and the report recommended that the FDA take the lead in monitoring the latest research results.
Professional Opinion...
Safe Distance from Cell Towers…
It is also difficult to predict a safe distance from cell towers.  For example, cell towers are designed to transmit most of their radio frequency (RF) energy horizontally.  Some areas below the tower may have lower levels than locations farther away that are more in line with the vertical height of the antennas. The exposure from a cell tower will depend on the type of antennas, the number of antennas, how much the antennas are actually being used, the time of day, etc.  The distance needed to reduce exposures down to the General Public Precautionary Level of 100 microwatts per meter squared (μW/m²) is often around a quarter of a mile (1320 feet) or more.  Due to the uncertainty, on-site testing with a broadband RF test meter is strongly recommended. A German study reported that people living within 400 meters (1312 feet) of cell towers had over 3 times the normal rate for new cancers (City of Naila 2004).  In an Israeli study, the relative risk for cancer was about 4 times greater within 350 meters (1148 feet) of the cell tower (Wolf et al. 1997).  Based on findings like these, a minimum safety distance of 1/4 mile (1320 feet) might be considered prudent. (...) The suggestions for safety distances in this chart are generally based on Michael Neuert’s [engineer, licensed electrician, and health educator] professional on-site testing of the various EMF sources in the San Francisco Bay Area since 1992.

Based on the accumulated evidence, we recommend that IARC [the International Agency for Research on Cancer] re-evaluate its 2011 classification of the human carcinogenicity of RFR [radio-frequency radiation], and that WHO [the World Health Organization] complete a systematic review of multiple other health effects such as sperm damage. In the interim, current knowledge provides justification for governments, public health authorities, and physicians/allied health professionals to warn the population that having a cell phone next to the body is harmful, and to support measures to reduce all exposures to RFR.

Lookup (or pull out) your cellphone’s manual and search for the sections on “radio frequency exposure” and “Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) information” to see how close the phone can safely be kept near your body… and that it should be kept away from “the bellies of pregnant women and for teenagers, away from the lower abdomen.” 😐
For an informative giggle, here’s the “Harmful Cell Phones” segment from season 7 of The Colbert Report.

@foxcurse radioed : [text] Maybe we should try and tone it down a notch. The neighbours changed the name of their wifi network to “i can hear you having sex” ›› texts from last night.

Internet security for those who really, really need it:
QUICK LIST:
Use 2FA and don’t sign into accounts on public OR SHARED computers.
Smart phones aren’t off ‘til the battery’s out.
Smart phones randomly record your voice.
Smart phones regularly record your location using GPS, cell towers, and wi-fi hotspots.
Websites and ad firms create profiles of your “digital fingerprint” from things as innocuous as the list of fonts installed on your computer.
Any device with a built-in webcam should have a webcam cover.
Never use biometrics -- that is fingerprint, voice, and facial recognition.
Faraday bags are not enough.
Sensitive activities should be done on public wifi with a device that does not use a SIM card and is never used for any other purpose in any other scenarios, including being powered on.
Non-sensitive activities should be done on private wired network or private wifi, with devices that never leave that environment.
cipher.exe
Dispose of any IoT devices you own. Unplug network printers when not in use. Do not print anything sensitive or incriminating on a color printer.
Passwords and 2FA: You should enable two-factor authentication (2FA) for every account that you possibly can. This requires an extra step behind a separate and ideally-protected device or account in order to log into any account. Do not use 2FA in a way that makes all 2FA fall apart from one single point of failure. ...Actually if anyone can figure out how to activate 2FA on Venmo, that'd be amazing. It doesn't seem to exist and that seems fully insane. Two big issues with choosing passwords:1. If your password is simple, it's easy. The most common passwords are things like "password," "aaaa," "1234," etc.2. If your password is used across multiple accounts, then compromising one compromises all of them. If you use a password manager, it can create very powerful passwords but also centralizes the passwords to one location that, if accessed, compromises literally every one of your accounts instantly. If you don't want to go the password manager route, think of a short phrase with punctuation and proper nouns in it that you can use for your passwords.
Webcam: On laptops and phones, get physical covers for your webcams, up to and including black tape; on desktops, make disconnecting the webcam as convenient as possible. (For example, I have a USB hub affixed to my monitor, which is what I plug my webcam into)
Biometrics and Device Locking: Do not give ANY biometric data to your devices. Ever. No fingerprint unlock. No facial ID. No Windows Hello. If you can make your unlock combination number longer, do it.
Signal Tracking: FARADAY BAGS DON'T WORK RELIABLY ANYMORE AGAINST CELL SIGNALS. If you've heard someone (such as myself mere days ago) recommend a Faraday bag, RFID bag, EMF bag, or some similar product designed to block radio signals for cell towers, bluetooth, and GPS, then please be advised that these used to work like 7-10 years ago but apparently do not work reliably to block cell signals anymore.
Some phones track you even when you've powered them off; and some phones record your voice (continuously or randomly), even when you power them off. As Edward Snowden once said: Your phone is not off until the battery is removed. And I don’t know of a single modern phone you can take the battery out of.
Remember: some phones track you, even when you power them off; and some phones record your voice (continuously or randomly), even when you power them off. As Edward Snowden once said: Your phone is not off until the battery is removed. And I don’t know of a single modern phone you can take the battery out of.
Account Tracking: If you're concerned about account tracking, then get more than one phone and more than one account. Split your time meaningfully between which phone you use. At worst, get a burner phone.
PC Thumbprint Tracking: Split your time on the internet between a public wi-fi device and a private network device. Counterintuitively, perform sensitive but unidentifiable activities on public wifi with a device you've designated for the purpose, and identifiable but mundane activities on private internet. The public device should be powered down (and wrapped in RFID bag if it's a phone) when you leave.
On public wifi devices, create unique accounts from the private network devices. Nary should these two things interface, no matter the distance. If you need to move files from one to another, an intermediate device such as a USB drive should be used.
Websites and apps can track you with cookies and IP addresses. But even beyond that, it can track you with installed fonts, installed mouse cursors, etc. Any basic computer settings your computer has, websites can track -- AND THEY DO.
Data Security: Deleting data off your computer does not actually erase that data. It simply marks the sectors that the data is written to as "marked for deletion," meaning other programs that need the space can freely overwrite those sectors. There is software that can un-delete files -- one of which back in the day was literally just called undelete.
If you need to make sure that data from a hard drive or solid state drive is erased to the point of unrecoverability, you have two options:
Full physical destruction -- but, I mean, you probably still wanna use that drive, right?
The cipher command.
Windows comes with a command called cipher, which writes 0's, then 1's, then random numbers, over every empty or marked-for-deletion sector of your drive. Simply type:
cipher /w:[Drive Letter]
For example, to use it on drive C:, you would type:
cipher /w:C
You can also encrypt your data using cipher, but I've never gone that far. To do so, you would type:
cipher /e [folder\subfolder] (this encrypts only the specified folder or subfolder)
cipher /e /s:[folder] (this encrypts the specified folder and all of its subfolders)
If you don't want to have any data at all left on the drive, you should format the drive, and then run cipher /w on it.
You don't want to use cipher on hard drives regularly, mind you; every time you do this, you cause millions of writes onto your drive, which lowers the lifespan of that drive.
Printers and Smart Devices: If you own anything that exists on the Internet of Things, destroy it. That's not hyperbole. If you have a smart device, do not in any way give it access your computer network; that includes smart TVs.
If you must have a network printer, whether you think it's a particularly "intelligent" printer or not, unplug it fully from the wall whenever it is not in use. Printers are one of the more common back-door points of entry, and they are pretty frequently running unsecured UNIX.
If you are printing sensitive documents, do not print them on a color printer, even if you’re printing in black-and-white. Color printers have identifying yellow dots that they print onto each document. This is how they got Reality Winner. If you think I’m joking, look it up.
... Anyway, don't ask me what brought all this on. Nothing in the news or anything, nope.
