Happy Friday the 13th! If your OCs were in a piece of horror media (video game/book/movie), what roles would they play? Who would die first? Who would make it to the end? What kind of horror media would they be in? (slasher film, psychological horror, zombie apocalypse, etc.)

Hi, Morri! It's so cool to receive a themed ask!

I have to admit I'm the biggest chicken and therefore I know basically nothing about horror, but I'll try!

If my BBtS characters still had their powers, they would fare pretty well. If this were an AU where there's no bending, though, they wouldn't even have their fighting skills, so most of them would probably be screwed. Jeremy practices various sports and they're extremely versatile because of this, and Nathan is the strongest one, so those two have the higher chance of survival (though they both have walking disabilities that would impede them if they had to run or fight for extended periods of time). Josephine is a master with guns, like Sheryl from RWR, so, as long as they were armed, they wouldn't have many problems in a slasher or a zombie apocalypse — I mean, Sheryl is already in an apocalypse. Cisco and Iliria from RWR also have the best chances, since both of them are skilled fighters and Iliria is a brilliant strategist.

Cecilia would exclusively survive if she had the means to fabricate some of her inventions. In that case, she'd thrive.

Evelyn and Moren would die immediately, sorry! Let's be real, it's a miracle Moren doesn't die in RWR.

Some characters actually become famous in later books... for things like treason and causing a war. The usual.

BUT, using that would be cheating, so I'd say there are a couple of possibilities.

Cecilia from BBtS would have a YouTube/Tik Tok where she does absolutely insane mechanical experiments. She fabricates lockpicking tools and breaks into the staff's dormitory to test them. She studies her bending's effect on her creations. Half of the videos end in shit blowing up. It's fucking hilarious and she has millions of subscribers who think it must be staged. The serious face Cecilia has is just good acting, right? It's not.

There's also Moren from RWR. He'd have a YouTube channel about nature, where he walks around the jungle on his home planet of Avous, pointing at plants and animals and essentially infodumping. So far, nothing fame-worthy, right? Well, when he arrives on Earth, he does the same, and he always manages to find impressive life forms... just to start rambling about the most basic shit. Giant sequoias? He's seen plenty enormous trees. That random bug right there, though? So weird, he must talk about it for the next 40 minutes.

At some point, Sheryl is inevitably featured in the videos. She starts sarcastically agreeing that yes, the random bug is the real deal. It's certainly more interesting than the eagle flying right above their heads.

People can't figure out if it's all a clickbait-y ruse, especially because Sheryl insists Moren uses those parts of the videos as thumbnails. It drives everyone off the wall. The engagement is sky high, thanks to the thousands of frustrated comments.

Sadly, I don't think I can answer this ask? BBtS has the same holidays as we do and RWR is... complicated.

I've talked about this before, but Avous is a very peculiar planet, because its rotation period takes not even a third of Earth's time. That makes trying to figure out the calendar a mess I'm procrastinating until I absolutely have to do it lol.

Sheryl almost swore aloud. Was she really worrying for an alien? Had she let herself be deceived so easily?

The Avouians had ruined her life before she was even born. They had killed her parents and captured her brother. She remembered that well.

And yet, she couldn't consider Moren just an alien anymore. Not because she had immediately trusted his promise to help her, on the contrary. But he'd shielded her from a loaded rifle. Had he not been honest, he wouldn't have saved her, and not even Sheryl's natural distrustfulness could find a flaw in that argument.

Hi, Brianna! Thanks for the ask!

3. Did you achieve everything you wanted to this year? If not, how will you go about it?

My goal for the first months was to write the last chapters of BBtS, which I did! For the rest of the year, I only had one, looser goal: getting to a good point with RWR and maybe completing the draft. I’m currently halfway through chapter 19 of 22, so I’d say mission accomplished! My hope is to wrap up this chapter soon and finish RWR by the end of January. I’ll be on vacation for the first week of the month and later busy with uni, so if I can complete chapter 20 in 2022, that would be excellent.

4. What is your favourite line you wrote this year?

I honestly don’t know? Prose isn’t a big focus for me, since I’m in too early of a drafting stage. There is nothing particularly poetic I’ve written. Sorry this is such an underwhelming answer!

10. Which character(s) turned out differently from what you had planned? How so?

I think every character ends up being a little different on the page. Since I’m writing RWR at the moment, those characters are fresher in my mind, and all of the ones who have a significant page time managed to surprise me. Sheryl showed a vulnerability I hadn’t planned, especially in some of the latest chapters, while Moren turned out the tiniest bit mean-spirited during the first part, which low-key shocked me. In the brief space she had, Iliria exposed a warmer side of her that wasn’t  really supposed to come out.

Here’s a snippet from RWR chapter 7:

“Can’t you light matchsticks on your stupid planet?” Sheryl grumbled, and grabbed the box.

“No. There are more evolved methods to start a fire.” Pause. “And, anyways, it’s rarely necessary.”

“Too bad your evolved methods do jack shit if you don’t bring them with you.” She drew a match and stroked the tip with excessive strength. Bathed in the halo of the faint orange light between her fingers, she furrowed her brow. “If you didn’t know what a matchstick is, how did you find them?”

Once again visible—much to Sheryl’s chagrin—, the alien shrugged. “A simple deduction. The word has the term ‘stick’ in it, so I guessed what shape I had to look for. And there isn’t much around.”

“Wow, just wait for the round of applause.”

Yes, the book is 50% them bickering.

Here’s a mini-snippet of Sheryl and Moren being their usual selves (stupid and oblivious):

“If you’re feeling sick, tell me before you collapse on the road.” Sheryl’s voice startled him out of his head.

He turned to her and narrowed his gaze. “Since when do you worry about me?”

Sheryl tensed and clenched her jaw in a way that instantly made him regret his words. “I don’t worry. But, despite what you think,” she said sharply, “I’m not a monster who enjoys watching people suffer.”

Moren took the hit. “I never believed you were a monster.”

For a second, Sheryl’s lashes fluttered. Then, a granitic face replaced the surprise. “Anyways, I was asking because I don’t want to pick you up if you faint.”

Here's a bit from one of the most recent chapters of RWR:

Her glance flashed from Moren to the corpse, until she shook her head and held the fallen weapon to her chest. Moren thought he heard a whispered thanks, but he'd probably imagined it. He couldn't study Sheryl's expression; she avoided his piercing gazes and hurried to retrieve the backpack. As soon as she grabbed a shoulder strap, she dropped it abruptly with a pained hiss.

Moren drew closer. "Are you hurt?"

"None of your fucking business" Sheryl replied, gruff, but she rubbed her wrist and this time reattempted the operation with her right hand. She assessed the bodies abandoned on the ground, blood smears and bullet holes scattered around the room. "We have to go."

Moren blinked and she had already volatilized. He diverted his attention from the three dead Avouians, forcing himself not to think, and followed the sound of footsteps in the hallway.

Hi, folks! Welcome to my second quarterly writing update of the year, aka: what did I write in April, May and June?

COMMENTS

Remember the last writing update, when I said was excited to work on a project that wasn't Blue Below the Surface? With RWR, I immediately hit a wall. Apparently, I was still in full BBtS mood and couldn't properly focus on the right WIP. In the end, I managed to immerse myself in RWR, but oh boy, was it frustrating.

After the not exactly brilliant start, writing actually went well. I did get stuck on some chapters for a ridiculous amount of time (mostly chapter 5, which didn't exist in the first draft), but nothing awful.

In June I finished high school and had my exams to study for, so I wrote half my usual word count. The post-finals exhaustion and this fucking HOT weather didn't help either. I'll need to write more than usual later in the year if I want to finish RWR by 2022, but I'm not particularly worried. I mean, it's not a job or anything.

In the end, during these three months I wrote half of what I did in the first trimester, but it's ok. I'm on chapter 6 of RWR and getting back into writing shape despite the heat exhaustion.

would you ever make a "complete" conlang? (not like every word, obviously, but with a full grammar/spelling system and stuff)

I'm actually making one already! It's in the early stages, because obviously the story takes priority, but I'm making a conlang for the Avouian aliens in my project RWR. If I'll have time in the future, I may even make conlangs for other fictional languages in the same universe.

So far, I've established the phonetics and a general outline of the syntax. Next steps will be making a writing system, which is probably the part I'm most excited about, and then grammar. It's all a lot of fun, my language nerd brain is thriving!
