The Event

Let’s celebrate Halloween together with a fun game! During this event, we’ll knock on people’s ask boxes and send them a simple question: Trick or Treat? 🦇

The recipient decides if it’s to be a trick, or a treat, as the owner of the house.

🍬 Treat — If the recipient choses treat, they share something with us as a treat. This could be a snippet, a line, OC trivia, or what have you!

👻 Trick — Turning the question around, the asker now has to share something of their own! But, seeing as it’s a trick, they may leave something under a read more, or link to something, that may catch you off guard… 😱

The event is held* through 27th-29th of October.

happy halloween wasps! i bring you a saccharine little treat, from my collection of Sorrow/Vren kisses:

Sorrow’s lashes fluttered against his cheek and Vren flinched away from the ticklish sensation. “Stop that,” he muttered, shoving at the infernii. Sorrow’s arm across his chest tightened, keeping him against his side. “I am kissing you, you don’t get to leave,” Sorrow declared. “That is not what you are doing.” “It is.” The lashes fluttered again, soft against his skin. “I learned about these from another human. They are called butterflies kisses.” “They are called ‘annoying things Sorrow is doing that will get him stabbed,’” Vren grumbled. Sorrow laughed, flickered his eyelashes again, then sat up. “Is that a promise?” he said, voice low with suggestion. “You are so very good at stabbing me.” Vren rolled his eyes and yanked the infernii down for a real kiss. Gods, why did he have to fall for such an irritating bastard of a man?

Some worldbuilding for you as a treat 🍬

Here's part of a chart I made for myself when I was planning out my ability system:

Channeling actually refers to the channeling of mental energy, and is therefore technically an ability people have to learn to use. The amount of energy someone has will determine what other abilities they have/can learn to use. The amount of mental energy someone has grows throughout childhood and reaches it's max during adolescence. At that point, they can't gain more. They can deplete their mental energy by using it, but it restores itself with time and rest.

Enhancement generally refers to the enhancement of one's own body, though external objects can sometimes be hardened or strengthened.

Perception usually refers to the enhancement of one's senses, but can also be used to sense energy or wavelengths.

Manipulation and shielding abilities require a lot of mental energy and so not everyone can use them.

Nix's telepathy is actually a perception ability. Unlike most abilities, it's always "on" and so uses a lot of mental energy. Because of this he can't use manipulation abilities, even though he has more mental energy than most.

Here's an excerpt from BCC's prologue:

A man was approaching the Bear with branches in his only hand. He had left his horse a with another rider on the edge of the gently sloping sea of burrows after they had separated from the army. The Bear knew them both well. Julius passed between the mounts, through the gentle mist, and climbed on the top of the Bear’s mound to stand before it. He moved through the brown grass with long heavy steps. A weight was pulling him down. He carried it on his shoulder, his eyes. Then he stood before the stone bear. He was tall for a human, but still had to turn his face up to look the Bear into it’s quartz eyes. The Bear looked back. In his heart he knew, what the Bear knew too. The air was ripe with anticipation of an end. Another circle was about to close.

“I’m sorry”, he said after a while. He turned away from the Bear, his eyes resting upon the hills in the horizon. “I never thought I would be the lord, who ended the Mantgamia dynasty.” He let out a long sigh and fell silent for a while. “I never really thought that this dynasty would end. That Bear Castle would one day have no Mantgamias.” He looked over his shoulder towards the stone wall which rose from the river. His home. A terrible cold washed over him. How had it come to this? He turned back to the Bear. “But all things end, don’t they? I know that, of course I do. Somehow still, every time something comes to an end, it feels as unexpected as the last.”

The stone bear was as silent as always. Sternly standing on it’s hind legs and staring with it’s glittering eyes. It always reminded Julius of his father’s stony face. He threw his cloak back and sat in the tall grass with a sigh. The earthy scent of autumn filled his senses. He hoped it would rain that day. He had always loved the smell of the autumn rain.

“I’m sorry, father. You must be furious with me, for failing your legacy. You’ll get to yell at me soon enough like you used to once I join you under this mound…”

He leaned on his knee, dropped the branches from his hand and buried his face in it. Would there even be anyone to bury him among his ancestors? There was a tightness in his throat. The fear and sorrow were drowning him. He had come face to face with death many times, but now that he was anticipating it, seeing it approach, he was terrified. Not that he was young anymore, but there would have been decades ahead he would never see. He would never see his children grow up. Bitter tears rolled on his cheeks. Later that day he would sent them away and likely never see them again.

After a while he wiped his eyes and looked over the winding burrows cloaked in now brown grass. The barren beauty of these moors never failed to put his mind at ease. Even now, when his world was about to end. This land would outlast him. The sheep, now only looking like white dots, would still tomorrow climb over that hill. New grass would grow from the bones under the barrows in the spring. The Bear would stand on it’s place and watch over the dead and the living.

Julius closed his eyes. “The Bear of the River, the Guardian who stands on the Mounds. Hear your descendant, hear a son of the moors. Lend me your strength. Help me hold your castle long enough. I don't ask more.”

He stood up, the air still weighing heavily on him, and placed the branches of bird cherry, bending from the weight of it’s black berries, on the stone before the Bear. “Please, accept my offering.”

It was quite a fitting offering, being a symbol of the imperial house and all.

Trick or treat!

A treat, for you—an anecdote to be specific.

The main ship from my WIP, Tomb of Light, is between two magic users named Hettie and Mara. Hettie’s magic manifests as a pink and orange Aura.

When I was rereading Ch. 1 a few days ago, I noticed that in Mara’s very first scene, I described the sky as “pinkish orange”, so I accidentally foreshadowed their relationship and I love that so much. It’s the little things.

Lot snorted. “Yeah, right.” “Much as I appreciate a good pun, mate, especially a gay one, now is really not the time,” Jayce said to him, fixing him with a pointed expression. Lot put his claws up in the air in surrender. “So,” Jayce resumed, turning back to Parrispex, “we need to attempt a jailbreak?” Parrispex laughed. “God, no.” Jayce sighed with relief. “No, that would have been much easier,” Parrispex said, interrupting Jayce’s ill-informed levity. “Prisons are far less guarded than this place. You’re going to heist. A state-of-the-art, top-of-the-line, half-a-wrong-step-and-you’re-dead heist from some of the most powerful people in the world. Got to say, I’m glad I’m not the one going.” “Oh, that’s great! That’s just great. Fantastic! No, I much prefer this version of events.”
