SHINHWA: K-pop Discography Deep Dive (Part TWO)
TW: mention and discussion of cultural appropriation, racism, and the n-word. Deeper discussion in a separate post. Here are my credentials (again): uh…none? I can name about three SHINHWA songs off of the top of my head, which is slightly embarrassing. I know of course about their incredible legacy, but similarly to BTS, I’ve been a k-pop fan for half a decade now so I figured it’s time to get…

Jay-Z, Beanie Sigel and Freeway are way too good to be on songs with us. Every guest emcee makes us look like assholes. Young Chris: Listen, you got problems, too: "In order to fuck mine, you gotta suck me off first"? Do you know what you're saying half the time? Besides, don't matter what we're saying, our fans are gonna be bored with this album in like two weeks anyway. seriously, man, you have a pretty nice flow, but I feel like you're not even trying sometimes! "They're lacking heat like Bermuda?" And, "Your pigeons ain't risin', man/ It's like you're lactose tolerant," I mean, I know what you were going for, but. Come on, "Baby, it's the Roc/ I'm the baby from the Roc," is detrimental to the violent image we need to portray. Neef: And dude, you've been sleepwalkin' through this album. Young Chris: Kids is growin' up faster every generation. When he says, "I been laying the pipe in every lady, I liked up in the 80s/ My life is really crazy, I been like this since the 80s," it doesn't make any fucking sense! He's only 19! Does that mean he was a four-year-old pimp, with a gold-plated high seat and a three-wheeler with 24-inch rims? Neef: I don't care who this Juelz guy is. Young Chris: This'll truly be an adventure! I haven't worked in a musical in months!ĭissention comes between the group during a discussion about the record's progress around the midway point. Basically, just sound like someone a dad wouldn't want to see his little girl out with. Phil! Your motivation on this record is as follows: You want to fuck every girl that you see and you are murderous. Young Chris: So why exactly is the album called Tough Luv? I mean, first off, I'm a very non-violent individual and I feel as if love is something that is only experienced once. Even early on, the Philly duo thought the plan seemed a bit strange. Later, at Baseline Studios, Jay assists his boys in cutting their first record. Simmons: You've made me far too much money to say no to you. Jay-Z: Surely, it sells itself! I mean, come on, they sound like all of my proteges combined and- get this- they are young! Simmons: What's your marketing plan? How you gonna sell this? let's say they're the latest in Rocafella technology: We've combined the repetition of Beanie Sigel, the exaggerated cadence of Freeway, the incredibly boring street lyrics of Memphis Bleek, and the completely nonsensical constant-rhyme style of Cam'ron. Jay-Z: Naw, Russell, ain't nothin' like that. Russell Simmons: So, you finally came to announce the signing of Common and Mos Def, right? It took you long enough but I'm glad you.

K-pop Discography Deep Dives: SHINHWA (Part TWO)
Tumblr media
We left off just after a break-through hit in Perfect Man, and we’re now…still in 2002, oh my god. I hope they got some sleep. I was expecting Wedding to be another sentimental, sweet ballad, and I couldn’t have been more wrong. It begins with a hard-hitting hip-hop verse and then the absolute whammy of the line: “why did I have to meet you when you’re the bride at my brother’s wedding?” It’s the mother of all “the one that got away” songs, and I confess that I liked it far more than I expected to. I’m honestly impressed by how dramatic it is, because everyone needs to rhapsodize to the stars while wearing a shirt that’s ~~artfully~~ half unbuttoned at least once in their life, right?
Deep Sorrow is the ballad that I was expecting Wedding to be, and it’s quite sweet, especially the “if only I’m by her side, I could be anything…I would even be a street light, if only I could see you walk home”. Again, I don’t have that much to say, but I appreciate this one more than their other ballads because of the lovely lyrics.
From the album, Wedding, I enjoyed the great harmonizing and springy beat of Hiway, the whispered intro of Lost In Love, the ethereal “maybe you like me, you like me too” from Soulmate, the catchiness of “Get Up” (though I could’ve done without the sound effects), and the harmonizing (ah, my one true love!) in You. I have to say though, this album isn’t really for me, since it’s very ballad heavy, but SHINHWA do have great voices. Sidenote, the AAVE overload has returned in 79, with an amount of swearing that’s just trying too hard to be cool to actually be cool.
Tumblr media
Young Gunz had me concerned from the title, but I was surprised to see that the song is actually about the strength that someone close to you gives you to keep going; I admit that went “awww” at the line “everlasting friendship in my life” and felt the urge to call my best friend. Though it’s not a song I see myself replaying often, as the style of slowed-down hip-hop isn’t normally my thing, I do appreciate it, and it was nice to see them have fun together when k-pop videos now are so often highly produced. I do want to point out though that in the English spoken-word sections, the way that they’re speaking is very reminiscent of AAVE (African American Vernacular English), and I’m not certain what to think about that.
From the album, Winter Story 2003, I liked the spoken word intro Let’s Start (and especially the laughter, which was a nice change of tone from the Wedding album), the smooth R & B of Mistake, and the slight electric guitar in The Days. Again, though, like the last album, this is quite ballad-heavy and overall, not for me. I did appreciate the spoken songs though, of which there were many.
And with Brand New, we arrive at another music video where they’re inconceivably shirtless, though at least this time it starts with such an over-dramatic slow-motion intro complete with an orchestra and very bizarrely dressed female dancers that I could get in some good laughs. As is fitting for 2005, this song felt much more reminiscent of the 2nd gen k-pop I’m familiar with, and is obviously going for attraction both with its styling decisions (or lack thereof), the very…uh, let’s say….hip-thrust heavy choreo, and the way the beat slinks along. Despite all my making fun, though, I did actually quite like this one, and it remained stuck in my head for a good day or so after, especially the cathartic high note.
Tumblr media
Angel, though it’s from the same album as Brand New, initially seems as different as possible, with a sunny, relaxed beat that’s at odds with its dark music video. Then, the song slowly gets darker and more desperate, giving the vocals time to shine and blossom into what’s quite an emotionally affecting ballad. I wish it had been so obvious about its style from the outset, though, as I think it would be stronger that way.
Something I noticed when watching this video especially is how..normal they look? SHINHWA was in their mid to late twenties, and they look pretty normal for being that age. But with k-pop idols that age now, they look practically the same as when they debuted, and I’m not sure if that is due to better quality videos, SHINHWA being a notable exception, or changing beauty standards, but I thought that it was interesting.
From the album, Brand New, I enjoyed the punchy pre-chorus of Shooting Star (though I could’ve done without the quite cringy “I’m a gangsta”), the harmonizing in Crazy, the easy-going beat of Time Machine, the layered vocals in Liar, and the acoustic guitar mixed with the flute in I Want. Side note, I was caught incredibly off-guard by the very religious “My Everything”; not sure what that’s about.
Tumblr media
How Do I Say is more relaxed than many of their songs have been thus far, and though it’s somewhat a ballad, it’s guitar-driven and overall feels much more low-stakes than a lot of their more angry music. I really enjoyed this one with its “how do I say, I love you baby?” It may just be a better quality recording system, but their voices sound very good in this track, and I really enjoyed the harmonizing especially. I’m still not the biggest fan of a random rap verse shoved in there, but with the harmony in the background, I didn’t mind as much as usual. I watched their 18th anniversary performance of this, and I admit it, I was won over seeing them have so much fun singing together.
From the album, Winter Story 2004-2005, I liked the background vocalizing in Rain On A Sleepless Night, the lyricism in Red String, the catchy 60’s (?) beat of On A Night Like This, Lyn’s feature in Erase All Of Time, and of course, the drama of the hilariously-titled Painfully Loving You. This, unsurprisingly, was another ballad-heavy album, so not my favorite.
Hey Dude starts differently to a lot of their songs, with a sprightly, springy guitar and some quite catchy hand-clapping that’s a nice contrast from how quiet the last two albums have been. The music video I was watching was a behind the scenes cut and so I had a very similar feeling watching it that I did to Young Gunz: though it was nice, it’s not something I’d replay often. From the album, Summer Story 2005, I liked the energy of the intro, but I don’t have a hidden gem for the rest as it’s mostly new versions of their previous songs. I did enjoy the Rock & Roll version of How Do I Say though; it really complements the song’s strengths and gives it a 70’s feel that I’m absolutely in favor of.
Tumblr media
Once In A Lifetime is a ballad if ever there was one, and is made to spotlight their voices, which it definitely does. It’s a very heartwarming and gentle track (“once in your lifetime, fly to the stars”), which is about what I expected, so I don’t have much to say about it. I still don’t understand why so many songs insist on having a rap in every one, though, because I know they can all sing and rapping isn’t needed in a song like this. You’re My Everything is also a very standard ballad, and though Once In A Lifetime distinguishes itself, this one falls into the “pretty but forgettable” category.
From the album, State Of The Art, I enjoyed the strong background vocals of Thanks!, the surprisingly hard-hitting beat of Doobob, the catchy underlying hip-hop of Paradise, Ivy’s voice mixing with SHINHWA’s in Highway Star, and the gentle warmth in Chance.
I was expecting Snowy Night to be another ballad in the vein of You’re My Everything, but I was pleasantly surprised by how upbeat it actually was. It has a jazzy undercurrent with some lovely strings and excellent harmonizing , and another behind-the-scenes music video of them fooling around that definitely got a few smiles out of me.
Tumblr media
And here’s where we’ll leave off for part two! Please enjoy the picture above of the SHINHWA members dancing at Eric’s actual wedding in 2018! Let’s hope no one fell in love with their brother’s wife this time. I had a feeling (call it intuition) that this was going to end up being a three parter, and here we are. Tschüss!
