By the way, since I was left with the resentment of reading horror after "The Summer in which Hikaru Died" failed me, I "visited" Minetaro Mochizuki, one of my trusted authors of the genre, to see what other works he had to offer apart from the great "Dragon Head" (which was the only one I had read). And, at night, I found myself and read this story from beginning to end.
Tumblr media
ZASHIKI ONNA.
I'll just say one thing: THIS IS HOW TO MAKE A GOOD HORROR MANGA!
This story REALLY scared me. And I highly recommend it.

HISUI TEAM - 百鬼夜行
... minus 95...
Despite only having 4 ghost types on this team, I really wanted to make a yokai-themed team. I'm actually going to write lore for these guys that I'm going to share publicly (*le gasp*). Info under the cut.
Hinoken - "Nurarihyon"
Tumblr media
First of all, me thinking that Nurarihyon is sexy is all Nurarihyon no Mago's fault. Hinoken the Typhlosion is the leader of a group of "yokai" that are hiding from those who have arrived in Hisui from other places. He protects those he holds dear. Unfortunately, he also likes sleeping around and has commitment issues sometimes, so his ex wives and husbands all ended up leaving him. Despite how he seems, he values peace and wants lost souls to ascend with no regrets rather than staying on earth as he does. He haunts his descendants (Quilly, Blaze, Explo, and Solus) and is mildly disappointed in them.
Sachiko - "Zashiki Warashi"
Tumblr media
Though not a ghost type, Sachiko the Pachirisu is a very lucky little zashiki warashi. Her presence keeps everyone safe while they're in hiding, even though she doesn't know that. Rikuu especially holds her dear to his heart and cares for her as if she were his daughter or younger sister. She's very sweet and likes to play small pranks on the others, who always forgive her. Her descendant (Graham) resembles her greatly, and she wishes he could hear her.
Tsurara - "Yuki Onna"
Tumblr media
What could a Froslass be other than Yuki Onna? Tsurara the Froslass is potentially the most cruel of the group. She likes handsome men and may or may not have kidnapped Rikuu at one point (which is how he met everyone else). She tends to argue with Hinoken a lot (because they're ice and fire), but is generally tolerant of everyone else (or loving towards Sachiko, who she sees as a little sister). She is the one most likely to lash out at anyone who tries to come near those she loves. She is the only one still "alive" during the modern day, and is quite proud of her daughter Fubuki for finding such a handsome boyfriend.
Itoyo - "Tsukumogami" Armor
Tumblr media
Itoyo the Basculegion was a normal man who inherited a cursed armor holding the souls of his ancestors. He acts as a defender for the hidden yokai village, and is seen as one of Hinoken's right hand men. He is constantly hearing the vengeful voices of the fallen, and is barely hanging on to his sanity by the time that Hinoken found him. He is one of the first to trust Rikuu when he first arrives at the village. He has no direct descendants.
Kiko - "Kejoro"
Tumblr media
Kiko the Zoroark is a somewhat vengeful soul. She is a mother whose eldest child was killed, and she vows revenge. She was separated from her young son as well, and didn't find him again until he had settled in a faraway land. Kiko is one of Hinoken's ex wives, as well. Her first meeting with Rikuu was one of hostility as she believed that he was allied with those who killed her son. She is very happy that her descendant (Ienzo) is living a very happy and successful life, as that is all she ever wanted for her family.
Rikuu - Not a yokai lol
Tumblr media
A traveler from Hoenn, Rikuu the Gallade came to the Hisui region after running away from an attempted assassination of his family. While he's wandering around Jubilife Village, he gets kidnapped by Tsurara and taken to the yokai village. He's completely confused and it takes Itoyo's intervention to keep him alive. He agrees to help keep the peace between the settlers and the yokai, and keeps the location of the village a secret. Sachiko thinks he's really cool, so she keeps following him around. Rikuu eventually moves back to the Hoenn region and re-starts his family. He thinks his descendants (Shimmer, Gleam, Twinkle, Sparkle, Glimmer, and Gladius) are dramatic.

one of the things I want the most someday is Mizuki's yokai encyclopaedia. a lot of online reference material is just cited from it because he went out and compiled the research himself. well, it's a big and expensive encyclopaedia set...
a lot of classic yokai like zashiki-warashi and yuki-onna originate from the prefecture north of here, Iwate. probably because it had a rough history with many famines and they had to explain the horrors to themselves somehow. I want to go to some museums and stuff up there someday
Miyagi doesn't have much in the way of yokai except there is one whose territory is literally a few minutes from my house! there is a boy with a lantern for a head that supposedly haunts Kita-Sendai. I will be sure to report if I experience any close yokai encounters XD

Frozen-Over Gensokyo | Artist: kokkahan
Story 1 The freezing blizzard shatters someone's shadow. It was a human, or maybe a god, or perhaps something else entirely. That information has already been lost. The shattered shadow became powdered winter temperament and danced down to the layers of snow on the ground. The only thing for certain is that it was a spirit. It is so bitingly cold here that even spirits and souls freeze solid. "This is what we want, right?" She asked with a sigh. This youkai is snow-white, colder than anything imaginable, and so beautiful that anyone would be entranced at first sight. And she knows that her sigh, along with her words, will freeze and fall down to the ground as well.
Story 2 Letty Whiterock is a youkai of winter, sometimes called a yuki-onna. She is a youkai that only makes the cold a little bit colder―she shouldn't normally be able to bring about winter. It's unclear whether she started to dwell in this place first or if the winter temperant began to gather all by itself before she got here… Perhaps both occurred at the same time. Regardless, she continues to create layers and layers of temperament snow. This is her festival in this world.
Story 3 The temperament of the moon gathers in the sky, creating a false moonlit night. Even though the moon is fake, it has the same effects as if it was real. However, this isn't all that important to the youkai. Even if there are no humans, as long as the temperament of human fear remains, the youkai can continue to exist here… But none of them thought that this was a good thing. "This isn't very interesting." The reason for this was not because they were bored.
Story 4 The Human Village is where most of Gensokyo's humans live. Various secret agreements between youkai keep the Human Village from danger. But in this world, there are no humans in the village. They sleep far beneath the cold snow as temperament strata.
Story 5 The youkai priest, ship phantom, nyuudou user, foreseeing nyuudou, mermaid princess, hitoban, vampire sisters, zashiki-warashi, and the soul of a stillborn child… They all ruminated over the memories within themselves. Not the memories of them being kept alive by a drip of temperaments in this world, but the fun and free memories involving battles of bullets… Those memories are stuck with them as if frozen in time. And they are waiting for the ice to melt. That is all.

Hi momo! I was wondering since a lot of your stories have liked really cool monster ideas, have you ever been inspired by Asian mythology like yokai or even cool stories about kung dragons or the monkey King?
I have a bunch if Japanese inspired stories actually! I haven't done anything about the Monkey King or anything about the journey to the west (I really love Saiyuki so I'm surprised none of those characters have inspired something) But here's some of my Japanese mythology inspired stories
Kenta the Kitsune (Part 1, Part 2),
Hiro the Onikuma (Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4),
Yamabe the Oni (Bi-MLM),
Yayako the Yuki-Onna (WLW),
Noboru the Dragon,
Eiichi & Taichi the Kitsune Twins (Poly; Part 1, Part 2),
Zashiki Warashi and Amaya (Grief; Non-Romantic),

I know a little about some Japanese folklore and I would like to offer some suggestions for Kyouka for the Monster high AU!!
I have two in mind that are little references to canon and some just purely indulgent but I suggest you look into to it because fhe myths are so interesting:
1. Yuki Onna (translating to Snow woman) She may also go by such names as yuki-musume ("snow daughter"), yuki-onago ("snow girl"), yukijorō (雪女郎, "snow woman"), yuki anesa ("snow sis'").
Some legends say the Yuki-onna, being associated with winter and snowstorms, is the spirit of someone who perished in the snow. She is at the same time beautiful and serene, yet ruthless in killing unsuspecting mortals. She is a snow vampire essentially and drains the life force of her victims.
My source is Wikipedia (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yuki-onna) and my own basic knowledge but if u search more you’ll find more interesting stuff and apparently there are quite a few stories including Yuki Onna where she is harmless although she is mostly portrayed as a malevolent spirit.
This is a self indulgent reference to Kyoukas ability since this myth reallly reminds me of demon snow and the real author was a Kabuki playwright so wrote about demons and yōkai in his works.
2. This one is more self indulgent but: Zashiki-Warashi (“Parlour child” roughly)
I don’t know much about this one so I’d recommend doing your research. They are mostly child-like spirits and are said to bring good luck. They are harmless. Said to be the ghosts of children and are mischevous rather than dangerous.
I just think it would fit Kyouka.
3. This one is purely self indulgent: Tanuki.
I don’t really need to explain this one I just think Tanuki Kyouka would be cute.
4. Funayūrei: these are “boat spirits” or simply the vengeful ghosts (onryō) of people that died at sea. They’re like the Japanese version of sirens, because in order to increase their numbers our of vengeance they drown people/sink boats at sea. In Yamaguchi and Saga prefectures they are called “Ayakashi”
Funayūrei are believed to use hishaku (ladles) to fill boats with water and make them sink. They are said to be the remnants of people who have died in shipwrecks and are attempting to cause humans to join them. According to legends, there are various methods that can be used to protect from the harm they inflict, such as throwing onigiri into the sea or preparing a hishaku with its bottom missing.
Their appearance as depicted in legends varies widely depending on the area. There are stories that speak of ghosts that appear above water, of boats that are themselves ghosts (ghost ships), of ghosts that appear on human-occupied ships, or of any combination of the above. They are described as appearing like umibōzu (some giant sea creature in myths) or as an atmospheric ghost light (like a will’o’wisp) There are many legends of funayūrei at sea, but they have also been described as appearing in rivers, lakes, and swamps of inland areas.
They are also said to appear on very foggy evenings, and attempt to capsize ships by making a cliff or a boat without a pulley appear, since getting startled and attempting to avoid it would result in capsizing and getting stranded on a reef. It is said that these illusions can be made to disappear by sailing though them.
Other than attempting to sink ships, in the town of Ōtsuki, Hata District Kochi Prefecture, they are said to make the boat's compass malfunction, and in the Toyoma Prefecture, fishing boats that travel to Hokkaido get turned into a funayurei, causing the crew to hang themselves. In Ehime Prefecture, when one encounters a funayurei, trying to avoid it by changing the boat's route, will run the boat aground.
Also, in the past, to avoid shipwrecks during bad weather, people would light a bonfire on land. However, a funayurei would light a fire on open sea and mislead the boatmen, and by approaching the fire, they would get eaten by the sea and drown.
Again source: Wikipedia (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Funayūrei) but you’ll be able to find lots of interesting stuff about them on other sites more nuanced rather than just. Stating facts I guess.
It’s my own obscure reference to the boat fight between Akutagawa, Kyouka and Atsushi in season 1.
ANYWAYS I HOPE YOU LIKED READING ABOUT IT AS MUCH AS I LIKED DRAWINF THE PARALLELS!!!
THANK YOU SO MUCH! THIS IS REALLY INTERESTING OMG ILY
In my notes I made for my au I actually have Kyouka down as a Zashiki-Warashi because I think a spirit that can cause harm but ultimately doesn't would fit pretty well with Kyouka. Also from the research I did they're also known to wear red which I thought was perfect
I've also toyed with the idea of demon snow being a separate entity so shes a Yuki Onna and in this au she's the spirit of Kyoukas mother which is why she looks so much like her (i haven't got a concrete plan for this idea though so its in its working stage, perhaps the reason she just follows orders is the ritual that in canon gave Kyouka her ability was meant to give her a protective spirit (if they exist) but something went wrong)
And on the subject of japanese spirits I also have Kouyou down as a Onryō who are specifically vengeful spirits. Which I think fits well with some of Kouyous motivations especially about her lover who was killed and even Kyouka being taken from her. For the minimal plot im going to have i would say she was trying to push Kyouka down a path of vengeance over her parents and was getting pretty close to success Either this or I'll have her as a Jorougumo or Kitsune but I'll need to do a bit more research. For her Golden Demon might be more of an alternate form since she's more in touch with her ability
(I could have her as a Yuki Onna purely so Chuuya can call her Yuki Anesan)
Side note im thinking of changing this from a monster high au to a folklore au since it strays further from monster high every day, let me know what ya'll think

The name consists of two kanji, 幽 (yū), meaning "faint" or "dim" and 霊 (rei), meaning "soul" or "spirit". Like their Chinese and Western counterparts, they are thought to be spirits kept from a peaceful afterlife.

I'm aware it's already a couple days in November but I'm still gonna do what i want anyways.
Since we don't celebrate Halloween as a nationwide holiday in my country, all i did was stay in and read horror manga (i was supposed to watch a horror movie a day buttttt after the 6th day i lost a good chunk of my mental stability to a depressed funk where i couldn't even get out of bed lmao so i just stopped)
So anyways here's the horror mangas i read last month and my unwanted opinion on each of them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Honestly this one was a heavy miss for me. First off, oh no my worst nightmare......middle schoolers, second off I'm not the brightest in the shed but i genuinely didn't understand what exactly happened for most of the manga. The lore didn't really explain it's events all that well either and the ending left a lot to be desired. 3/10.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This one was basically Zashiki Onna with supernatural elements and a sibling complex. I didn't hate it tho. 5.5/10.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's funny how the movie was also on my list for movies i was supposed to watch last month(I'll still watch it at some point). But anyways the manga as expected was pretty morbid, i loved the art and the way the storyline and narration is paced, the little hints of supernatural elements. 7.5/10.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ah this one made me have to sit back and breath a little when i was done. I told a friend i thought it kinda felt like a bastardization (is that the right word?) Of the Jesus birth and i stand by it. The imagery and art is disconcerting and if there were tws, it would be almost a page long and there would be one for almost everything. 8/10.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This one was the average paranormal revenge manga and honestly everyone who died absolutely deserved it. 6/10 just cause i like seeing shitty people in fiction die terribly.
