I've seen a couple people saying they're jumping ship for [other big socmed] after the AI announcement here, but like. Guys. Friends. You do realize all the other sites have been silently working with big AI companies for a while now. Bluesky has not implemented any acknowledgement or protection, and the CEO worked with crypto for years. They're just not broadcasting it or giving you an option to help remove your work from automatic scraping. Cohost has implemented similar levels of prevention compared to Tumblr.

I greatly prefer the transparency and the tiny bit of protection, no matter how flimsy. Tumblr is pretty awful, but it's still better than everything else so far. Which sucks but until we burn down the plutocracy, this isn't gonna be escapable.

(Also, no Tumblr did not quietly sneak this in. They literally announced it before implementing.)

And my thoughts on the CEO being... himself.

First Spoken Lines Tag Game

Thank you so much for the tag, @harps-for-days!

rules are simple: post the first spoken lines of the main characters (however you define that) of your wip.

I started a new chain since there’s such a large cast for Muse’s Band of Misfits. They’re all as important as the next right now, so I don’t have the heart to not to call someone a main character.

I’ll tag @jin-doodles and @ashen-crest. You can find the other lines under the cut!

Lecuto/Fives

“I’ll help you in a second, dear, but I have a question I so desperately need answered,” explained a calm, caring voice. “Most would beg me at this point. The others would have ripped themselves free by now. But you did neither. Why?” (Lecuto)

The owner of the voice wanted to appear friendly, or at least amiable despite the apparent kidnapping. I couldn’t shake off the dread I heard at the disappointment in their voice, though. It was the tone of a mother who wanted you to stop eating sweets before dinner but wouldn’t put more effort than moving the jar out of reach. And just like the child in that analogy, the only thing I could say wasn’t more than an empty nicety.

“I felt it would be rude.” (Fives)

Inizio

“Won’t you lead me on, my lady? My sight fails me now and then. And please, call me Inizio.”

Zilli

“You all can refer to me as Zilli. Lecuto’d like to call me number Two, but I’d rather use my own name, no matter how new.”

San

“What do you mean by chosen, exactly? If you want us running around doing errands, I don’t think I’ll be great for that.”

Quaeter

 “Watch out there, friend,” chirped a voice I assumed that belonged to one of the pairs of arms. “She's not a likeable as you’d wager if the first thing you saw was her smile.” The voice had a very distinct whistle that flared up and squeaked out with every S.

Sei

“That’s me!” 

The shout is followed by the sounds of small footsteps hitting the floor. Achten is startled by the sudden movement and tries to chase after them. They only get about half way before falling flat on their face. Quaeter is half way into the start of a run before they stand up and pitter-patter towards us again.

Syet

 “Au’jha’ri i’tu yn kehn,” he whispers while staring directly at me.

A sentence spoken in a language I’ve never heard and neither have the others.

Achten

“Oi! You having a gaff here, magde?!” he bellows. 

Divye

“Divye,” whispered from between tightly drawn lips. Nothing further was shared.

Diezo

“You can call me San.” He sticks out his tongue and shows us the black three tattooed onto it.

“And this is Diezo.” His friend points two fingers at his head with his thumb outstretched and then flicks his fingers towards us with a toothy grin.

(Not quite technically a spoken line, but this is the sign for ‘hello’ in Cantican Sign Language, which is based on LSM.)

Consider for a moment: A slow-burn identity reveal “no one knows” AU with an emphasis on ghosts being taken seriously as an actual, world-changing threat.

Ghosts are treated as an exceedingly dangerous, but unavoidable force of nature. They can come and go without warning, through naturally occurring spontaneous portals. They're territorial, driven only by obsession and hunger for the living. Particularly powerful ghosts are on par with natural disasters.

Life goes on because there's simply no other option. All major buildings have varying levels of ghost shields, some stronger than others. Just about everyone has some form of personal shield, weapon, or general deterrent. For the most part, humanity takes this apocalypse in stride, barely keeping it all together because there's just enough safety to keep them all sane.

Which is why the rumors of Phantom being able to fully mimic a human body incites panic in Amity.

Phantom was already a nightmare as it was–one of the most powerful and intelligent ghosts on record. His territorial fights with other ghosts for haunting (hunting) grounds in Amity have made global news several times already. Powerful ghosts could appear more human–but to think he was transforming down to a cellular level? Hiding among them? Bypassing ghost shields and alarms? Picking them off one by one?

The focus is mostly with Lancer's class, and how the school deals with this new threat on top of everything else. Everyone is a suspect, no one is safe, and Danny Fenton in particular gets slowly more and more exhausted, apathetic, and… unnerving.

The stress, the lack of sleep, the fighting, no one to turn to, not even his best friends or family–it takes a toll on him. Starving himself doesn't help, but he refuses to do more than take small bites from the ambient life energy and emotion of the living around him. Nothing that won't actually do lasting harm. He begins to slip up more and more, which Sam and Tucker begin to notice but haven't quite connected the dots yet.

But, well. What else can Danny do when Pariah Dark comes knocking on Amity’s doorstep, and his whole class is in the line of fire?

Consider this: ghosts are actually exactly what the Fentons think they are.

They're snapshots of a longing so strong, unfinished business so deep it reaches out beyond life. Lingers just a bit longer. And if it happens to meet a dense cloud of ectoplasm (invisible to the naked eye, but omnipresent even in the mortal realm), it coalesces. The ectoplasm fits into the shape of it. Which, when the desire is strong enough, it's got a rough idea of its self-image. This tends to mean a more humanoid figure, though it's more often warped in some way–a self-reflection, skewed by said desire. The warping varies on the dead soul’s perception of themselves, the intensity of their desire, how much time passed after death, and how much ectoplasm was present.

In short… no matter how “normal" a ghost looks or acts, it really, truly isn't human. It's animated ectoplasm with a single goal: an obsession. Nothing else. They're more akin to plants than animals, following a single drive with no emotion. They react to stimuli, recognize threats (including other ghosts), and can even imitate human speech and mannerisms to obtain fulfillment of their obsession.

Not “evil" by any stretch, but they're entirely driven by instinct. A tree doesn't pause to consider the rocks it breaks with its roots. A cordyceps doesn't torture its host for fun, or kill with malice. It just does. It follows code in its DNA to survive and multiply–And ghosts just follow the code in its ectoplasm to fulfill its obsession. The more powerful a ghost, the better it's able to overcome obstacles preventing this–whether through brute force, or manipulation. This power is always directly proportional to the amount of ectoplasm present at the time of formation, and how much time passed since death.

What then, does this mean for Danny? Danny, who's previously come to the conclusion that he's only half-ghost, which surely explains how he retained his mind? His independent thoughts and emotions?

What does this mean for Phantom, who experienced an entire world’s worth of ectoplasm condensed as a singularity, at the exact time of his death? Whose strength only grows and begins to exceed every limit they previously thought possible?

If a ghost was as strong as him… could it mimic a human perfectly? Down to a molecular level?

Could it, in its desire to fill an obsession… trick its own fake mind into thinking it was still human? Or half-ghost?

In response to recent events, I'd like to announce that I'm regretfully staying here on Tumblr.

While photomatt has been truly horrible, he doesn't have any sway on global politics like other CEOs on competing socmeds. This place is still the lesser of all available evils, considering the even more prominent queerphobia elsewhere. Tumblr's recent conduct is awful--it's just even more awful everywhere else.

I will no longer monetarily support Tumblr, but I'll be staying because I refuse to give Twitter/Insta/FB/TikTok any traffic. I hope the staff corrects their actions, and I'll be keeping my eyes open for other socmed options.

But for now, I'm staying here and saying this blog is safe for all queer folk. Trans sisters especially, I'm with you.

I really like your “ghosts treated as natural disasters” au! It’s super cool! I wonder how people get around the fact that phantom has never been seen sucking anybody’s life force out? Do they think he’s building up to something big or just protective of the population center he’s found

That's a great question! I tried to keep that post as short and sweet as possible but oh man do I have a lot more nitty gritty details in mind.

For one, ghosts aren't restricted to Amity Park. They have haunts (territories) but they have lairs in the ghost zone as well, so they tend to go back and forth between the worlds.

However, only the Fentons have a portal with a fixed location, and they rarely have it turned on. (Fun fact: the Fenton portal is made after ghosts explode into the human realm in this AU!) There are areas on earth with higher portal activity, but where they pop up and how long they stay is pretty random.

So, ghosts naturally wander. They pop back into the human realm as they wish, but it's not always close to their haunt. Lots of lesser ghosts don't even have haunts, too mindless for intelligence and more like roaming animals. Smarter ghosts can be curious and explore other parts of earth. They tend to only get defensive of their haunt if they sense other ghosts hunting there excessively, or trying to lay claim on the haunt.

So, in short, Phantom isn't always in Amity. He's there most frequently, but does appear elsewhere on earth at times. There's basically no way to tell how many ghost-related deaths are Phantom's fault.

Not only that, but slowly devouring a human's life force over time isn't uncommon! More intelligent ghosts will do this in an effort to prolong the duration of their "meal", and indulge in the terror it incites. A lot of people simply get very ill and exhausted over time, until there's not enough life left in them. But since this happens to humans naturally all the time, well... it's often hard to tell if the decline in health is from natural causes, or a ghost. (Lesser ghosts don't eat as much, but they have no intelligence to keep them from stopping till they're full. They get full quickly though, so you're less likely to die if one catches you. Just watch out for multiple encounters.)

Danny does take this to an extreme, though! Humans do replenish their life force naturally over time--it's just that ghosts that eat slowly still overcome that natural regeneration. Phantom is literally the only ghost that takes so little over such a large population that it's barely perceptible (unless he messes up, which, oops--that's happened).

But there's simply no evidence that this is probable, or even possible. Ghosts have no reason to do this, it's not as satisfying to them if their prey doesn't experience the terror that comes with knowing they're being drained.

(Also, just another fun little factoid: haunts are usually small! Lesser ghosts will haunt a single item, stronger ones will haunt a building, the strongest on record will haunt something like a park or complex. No one has figured out yet that Phantom haunts all of Amity because that's unheard of!)

Another factoid: ghosts don't need life force to survive! They lived in the ghost zone all this time just fine.

Life energy simply gives them more power, and better ability to stay in the human realm longer, and more corporeal. And it's instinct--it tastes good.

Danny, however, does need that life energy to survive. He needs his ghost half strong enough to stay attached to him, or it could detach and leave his human half dead. Then he'd just be another ghost.

(Also, The more sentient a life is, the stronger it is. So ghosts could technically drain the life of plants and animals, but it's gonna be mostly empty calories.)

Everlasting trio in this AU is very much "accidental queer found family polycule", with varying levels of platonic/romantic and sexual/nonsexual feelings between them.

These are my personal headcanons for them! You're welcome to make your own interpretations though, I don't mind :')

Danny is amab non-binary (he/him) asexual aromantic. (no he doesn't know much about this until after he starts re-integrating into society lol)

Sam is afab genderqueer (she/her) demisexual grayromantic.

Tucker is afab trans boy (top post-op)(he/him) pansexual panromantic.
