HANDS UP. More facts about the Joshua Trees: it’s an evergreen plant from the lily family. It’s also known as the Yucca Palm. They grow from 15-40 ft high! Cutting and destroying a JT is prohibited by law in the US. BANDITS. Crooks. Muggers. At night, they look like things that go bump, thump, and scuttle. IMAGINE, a body of water big enough to look like the ocean, where people (and birds!) start flocking to for recreation. At 35x15 miles, the Salton Sea is California’s biggest lake, but one that has bones in its closet. Literally, fish bones. You see, the Salton Sea was formed when natural flooding from the Colorado River filled a sink basin, a natural low point with no outflows. Decades later the continuous salt concentration brought in (again no outflows to any ocean) elevated to alarming numbers - 50x “saltier” than the Pacific Ocean - leaving wildlife including endemic fish and native birds to perish and decline in population. Fish (native tilapia) are seen dead on its shores, already made of layers upon layers of decaying fish bones. There is an undeniable “stink” in the air, driving even the very people who tried to make a living (and recreationalists) scampering away. The result is an abandoned, theme-park like post apocalyptic beach in the desert. Although today, the Salton Sea is still a “haven” for migratory birds like ospreys, cranes, and falcons; and “locals” like pelicans, cormorants, plovers, and yes, 🦆🦆🦆. But human consumption of natural resources and climate change continuously pose a threat to the existence of these already endangered and threatened animal species. I’m no expert on environment, history or even avian matters, but what I can do is spread the word, get involved, and remind the handful that read this to conserve and care for the animals and the environment.
