[ID: Red, block text on a transparent background. The text reads: âFanfic Author PSAâ. The dark red Archive of Our Own logo is depicted on either side of the lettering. End ID.]
Many people who read fanfiction also require the assistance of text-to-speech or audio description software. Blind and visually impaired people are very much present in the fanfiction and fandom communities, but are so frequently disregarded or forgotten about.
If you are writing a work and like to utilise paragraph breaks, please do not use combinations such as the following:
[Image description in Alt Text. I have used an image to avoid what I will describe below.]
[ID: Four examples of punctuation and icons that are disruptive when used as line breakers. The first line is a series of O letters. The second is a series of asterisks. The third is a series of dots, circles and stars. The last is a series of tildes. End ID.]
The software will read these combinations out loud letter for letter or symbol for symbol. For example; it would read to the user the word âasteriskâ six times in a row, or the word âtildeâ five times in a row.
This is unpleasant, confusing and often irritating for blind or visually impaired readers. If you would like a similar sample of what it would sound like, enter one of the above combinations into Google Translate and use the audio button.
Here is a post by @ao3commentofthedayâ that also details this difficulty and provides links to downloadable audio transcribers and fanfiction audio readers. These are also helpful for if you simply wish to listen to fanfiction but canât find a podfic of the work.
Screen Reader Friendly and Screen Reader Compatible are AO3 tags that help visually impaired readers track and access fanfiction that is consciously created with their needs in mind.
Please consider adding these tags to your works in order to expand the range of works that visually impaired readers can safely and confidently access.
Alternatives to these are:
Utilise HTML or embedded line break functions where possible, such as the feature on the Archiveâs editing functions. Most screen readers should be equipped to understand these.
[Line breaker] can also be read by most screen readers. While not as aesthetic, itâs still functional.
Use an image divider/breaker and utilise the Alt Text or [ ] descriptor functions to label it as a line breaker.
Reminder:Â âlikingâ this post does not spread awareness.

some of you are not ready for this discussion but. the fact that the animal/anthro/beast races in most fantasy settings are almost always coded as poc is. kinda racist. and its particularly egregious when the coding attributes aspects of black and brown ppl to said beast races, like we dont already have enough of a history of being exoticized, dehumanized, and compared to animals by whites. im tired of seeing white ppl make bank on this like coding a race of creature-people as black or brown is such a kool new unthought of idea. man i just want white ppl to stop giving beast races black traits and hairstyles, acknowledge thats fundamentally racist and maybe try taking another approach with their own wordbuilding and stuff. idk what to tell yall expect that you should be able to create settings in which beast races arent blatant and dehumanizing references to poc, and dont have to encompass racist caricatures and stereotypes that exist in the real world.Â
i think, in many instances, white creators sometimes do this in a misguided attempt to make it âdifferentâ or w/eâŚas if believe that making races with specific cultural coding and references from poc and nonwhite cultures into creatures instead of actual humanoids somehow subtracts from that fact? like âlook these arent actually black or brown people theyre cats/lizard/etc people!â when really, even if it may not be the intent, due to the fact that black and brown traits are being heavily ascribed to said beast races in the lore and wordbuilding, what you get is just another instance of white people dehumanizing and misrepresenting peoples and cultures that they do not fully understand. intent doesnt necessarily justify or excuse results.Â

You know whatâs some crazy $hit?
This fabulous bitch
She makes a shit ton of poses (like 16,000 or some crazy nonsense). Â I used this lovely lady to draw so much as a teen. Â Whether it was some nerdy pose for my Mary Sue as fuck OCs
or for full on fight sequences
or for tragic deaths of my OCs in the arms of a totally OOC main protagonist. Â
this bitch hooked me up. Â
And with the wildest, craziest stuff that you could see in your head but had no way or resources to reasonably draw like
or this
or this
DUDE! Â INASNE SHIT!! Â So I was using her for a pose reference and decided, you know what, I owe this bitch some cash. Â Lemme dole it out for her. Â BUT then, I looked and saw she only has 286 fucking patrons!! Â This chick gives out free shit and spends countless hours arranging these shoots and setting this stuff up. Â
Iâll fork up the cash, SenshiStock. Â Youâre worth it. Â
Check out this amazing womanâs stuff, and get knowledged: Â https://www.deviantart.com/senshistock

SHOUT OUT TO MY WRITER HOMIES WITH MUSLIM OCS/CHARACTERS;
1. WEARING A SHAWL TO BATTLE IS THE EQUIVALENT OF HAVING GIRLS FIGHT IN STILLETTOS.Â
Just so you know, this is what Iâm talking about;
-Is it bad-ass? Abso-fucking-lutely. Is it Practical? Not a chance in hell. Especially not if itâs silk. If itâs cotton, you are skating on thin fucking ice. That bitch will NOT stay on. It barely stays on with me just walking down the street to Walmart. Wielding axes and rifles and swords and daggers? I PROMISE you it will not do the job itâs expected to-WHICH IS TO COVER THE HAIR. (Some muslim girls dont wear them-and thatâs fine. But those who DO do it to completely cover the hair in public. Is it ~Aesthetic~ to see the flyaway hairs in battle? Sure, but those arenât usually practical either. )Consider instead;Â
sport shawlsÂ
-For one thing, itâs actually DESIGNED to be worn to atheletic activities. Archers tuck hems into the collar of their shirts so they donât get in the way, and track runners pins (ill get to this bit later) them down into the shirts to prevent flyaway bits and to stop them from getting slapped in the face. Itâs breathable, stretchy, presentable without being attention seeking.Â
BawalsÂ
In a pinch, bawals work just as well-as long as you specify that they are COTTON. Unlike the shawl, which are rectangular, bawals are SQUARE, and thus easier to manipulate, fold and pin down. If you wear it right, they carry an equal aesthetic value to shawls, and come in plenty of pretty patterns as well.Â
2. Iâm not sure about the USA, but the girls I know wear this underneath the headscarf;
Does it kinda look like a beanie? It sort of works like a beanie too. Hair is slippery. It tucks in any extra hair you might miss just by wearing the headscarf, its harder to pull down and on the event the shawl DOES fall down, your hair is still not exposed. It protects the ears-which is important even on a daily basis, because pins, headphones and any other headgear that might pinch them. It comes in plenty of designs, including ones that has open backs to allow long hair and ponytails.Â
3.SPEAKING OF PINS; IâM TALKING ABOUT THESE BAD BOYS;
BROOCHESÂ
though , i suppose most of yâall are most familiar with safety pins, right?
whatâs the difference? Well, if your oc/character is an athlete, itâs actually LEAST likely theyâll be wearing SAFETY PINS. Theyâre cheap and super easy to buy in bulk, true, but they also SUPER easy to wear out even with the smallest amount of strenuous activity. Between the three of âem, Iâd put the brooches as the best option to wear in battle because 1) it has a large surface area, thus hurts less when pressed on with heavy items, which includes bag straps and weapons, (pins are sharp and can poke you painfully); and 2) more secure-the latch is covered by the gaudy jewellery above, and theyre usually smaller and tighter. Stays on the stubbornnest, even when headscarf is pulled. very roughly. Iâm saying that even the cheapest brooches will allow the shawl to be ripped apart before even letting it go.Â
3. They probably ponytail their hair. Because Come On, guys.
Anyway itâs been bothering me and I just thought if yall could bother knowing the difference between skin tones for POC you could bother with muslim practicalities too. Or somethingÂ

Writing Romani Characters, a PSA
Who are the romani?
The first records of the romani people in europe date back to the 1300â˛s. We think that they came from india based on linguistic evidence and cultural similarities, but since we have no written records from the romani themselves itâs hard to say for sure.Â
The romani were persecuted where ever they went. They were enslaved, mutilated, executed, and subject to multiple attempted genocides (@ spain & germany). Today they still face discrimination, coercive sterilizations, and even forced deportation. Because of this (and other cultural reasons) the romani people often traveled from place to place. Over time most romani settled down; very few are still nomadic.
Today most romani still live in europe, primarily in the balkans and turkey, but there are sizable populations in the usa and brazil (1 mil & 800 thousand respectively).
Very Basic Culture
-family & extended family are very important
-fear of persecution (valid)
-depending on what country they are from different romani are different
the sinti are from germany
The romanichel are from the uk (most american romani are romanichel)
the gitanos are from spain
and so on. Each group is slighty different & has their own culture and traditions and often their own dialect, and oftentimes there are subdivisions within each group.
-it would be interesting, if you were writing a romani character, to have them struggle with the need to fit in with society at large vs their need to participate in their own culture, but thatâs just a suggestion
-or even, having been raised by parent(s) who repressed their romani-ness and trying to rediscover their own cultural identity.
-you know basically immigrant kid vibes without ever having immigrated.
Depictions of Romani
The most famous fictional romani were created by authors who were not romani themselves and relied heavily on stereotypes.Â
Notable examples
Esmeralda (culturally romani, but not ethnically), Clopin, & Quasimodo (ethnically romani, but not culturally) from the hunchback of notre dame
Javert (ethnically but rejects the culture) from Les Miserables
maybe heathcliff from wuthering heights
Dick Grayson (not culturally, but at least a little ethnically) from DC comics
goons from 101 Dalmations (the book)
henchmen from bram stokerâs Dracula
Madam Zeroni and Zero from Holes
Depictions of romani from romani creators-
Mikey Walsh has written a series of memoirs titled Gypsy Boy
Violet Cannonâs memoir Gypsy Princess
Latcho Drom a french documentary directed by Tony Gatliff
Gadjo Dilo a french film also directed by Tony Gatliff. Many of the actors are romani as well.
Language
Not all romani speak the language.Â
Anyone who speaks romani is bilingual. No one only speaks romani.
There are many different dialects of romani, and most dialects are mutually unintelligible (meaning speakers of different dialects cannot understand one another).
Spelling and pronunciation is not standardized.Â
More similar to punjabi and hindi than european languages.
Definitely not the same thing as Romanian⌠Câmon yâall
Itâs 100% valid for your romani characters not to speak the language.
If they do speak the language itâs valid for them not to be able to read & write it, or not know formal vocab n shit.
If you grow up only speaking a language with family & youâre never formally educated in it, shit like that happens.
A lot of romani speakers will use loan words from their other language(s) to fill in the gaps.
Appearance
Most have dark hair
Many are white passing (which like, trying to define what is white is problematic in and of itself but like ugh)
Like /generally/ romani from lighter skinned countries are gonna have lighter skin than romani from darker skinned countries, so like a romani from sweden would probably be lighter skinned than a romani from italy. This is 100% a generalization.
Please look at reference pictures of actual romani people before drawing, thanks
Remeber, describing someoneâs looks as exotic is gross and you shouldnât do it.
Stereotypes and Shit: general does and donâts
romani â romanian. I will fight you.
if your romani character is
a thief
irresponsible & flighty
chronically dishonest
youâre on thin ice.
If your romani character is-
stealing children
literally just a sex object
only there to put a curse on your main character or tell fortunes
literally just a mindless henchman
you might just need to.. rework your story to be less.. bigoted, thanks.
Just.. do your research? And donât assume you know shit.

Finished the Briar Beauty redesign! Heavily redesigned her outfit because I wanted her to wear something that would be more comfortable but still fit her stylish, ready-to-party personality.
I feel like it would be uncomfortable to fall asleep with her canon outfit?
Anyways, shes half-Pakistani, half-black in my rewrite!
Her canon character arc where she questions her destiny because she doesnât wanna lose her friends was so interesting to me and I wish EAH didnât just basically throw that whole storyline away. She was able to rebel from her destiny and... that was it? Faybelle had no problem with it? And despite loving her friends enough to risk rebelling from her destiny, her relationship with the other characters barely changed?
I dont know, maybe I just wish there was more Briar content. Shes my fave.

Hey jsyk itâs 2018 and if youâre still drawing characters with big lips like THIS, even if theyâre pale/not black, itâs fucking racist. Stop doing it.
No excuses. âItâs a stylistic choice!â Itâs a RACIST stylistic choice.
âIdk how else to draw big lips!â Thatâs because you relied on racist caricatures and are a bad artist. Teach yourself. Learn. If youâre not willing to do that, then you are a bad, racist artist.
âBut itâs part of the character design!â Yeah, and itâs racist. If itâs your OC, then change it. If itâs not your OC, make the right choice and draw them with normal looking bigger lips instead of this racist monstrosity.
And if this post makes you uncomfortable because itâs calling you out for stuff youâve done, good. Fix it. Own up to it. Grow.
If you see this and youâre first thought is to defend this: you are racist. You are part of the problem. Congrats. Now work on yourself and unlearn that.

My redesign of Ever After Highâs Daring Charming! For a potential eah rewrite/au Iâm working out atm. I also have a separate post for my redesigns of Dexter and Darling you can see here.
Iâm planning on writing Daring to be a closeted gay man at the beginning of the story. Rosabella and Daring are cute, but Iâm not really a fan of the trope where women in media have to teach guys how to be decent people. Been there done that, letâs try something else, yknow?

Iâve been meaning to post my redesigns of the Ever After High characters according to this little rewrite/AU of eah Iâve been wanting to do for awhile. I hated how all the main princes were lazily-designed, no-flavor Generic Prince Charmings while infinitely more interesting designs and cultures were given background status. So anyways, simply put, Mexican!Charmings. Redesigned Darling Charming to wear a huipil and Dexter to wear a charro suit. And the same will go for Daring Charming, but Iâm posting him separately.Â
Some extra notes about the Charming twins for my rewrite:
-Dexter is trans and bisexual!
-Darling Charming is a confirmed lesbian unlike whatever ambiguous purgatory the EAH writers put her in terms of the true loveâs kiss scene.
