Chapter 199 Trivia (Part 2)

(Previous part)

The drainage function Xeno is talking about here that caused the Perseus to sink is probably the bilge pump. The bilge is the lowest part of the ship. As any water on a ship drains downwards, a pump is needed to remove the water so it doesn't collect.

Without anyone ensuring the pump didn't stop, the hull filled with water and the Perseus sank. Bilge water also isn't usually just water, but can be full of other things like oil, chemicals, pitch, and dirt.

The KoS used pillow lift bags to recover the Perseus. To do this, someone needs to dive down and attach them (Taiju and Ryusui again, maybe?), then inflate them with compressed air.

A lifting bag filled with 1L of air lifts 1kg of weight, so if we knew the total size of the bags we could approximate the weight of the Perseus… Except they grossly overestimated, since the ship is flying out of the water rather than lifting slowly in a controlled manner.

Chelsea's iron comment here confuses me because several of the ores they collected include iron in them? Maybe there's just not enough.

The simplicity of the lower half of the mecha shown here along with the briefs reminds me of Astro Boy. The top half I believe is just the "DR" from Dr. Stone along with rocket-ship-inspired arms and Senku's face. Alternatively, it could be a reference to Tetsujin 28, also known in the western audiences as Gigantor, or even Mazinger Z.

Isla Martin Garcia is on the mouth of the Río de la Plata, between Uruguay and Argentina. It's less than 2km^2, and 150 people live there permanently (=Dunbar's number?)

If you're wondering why the KoS is suddenly so far away from Fort Medusa, it's because it's where Stanley docked the Perseus several chapters ago.

Stainless steel uses approximately 11% chromium to get its heat- and rust-resistant properties, but can include other elements as well.

Senku had already introduced bottling to the Ishigami villagers, but the addition of canning means less glass. Canning is especially good because while both methods can last several years, cans don't shatter and also protect from light. They also weigh less!

Francois is making cans of fish meat and "gibier", which is the French word for game, or any kind of hunted meat. Going by the size of the carcasses and the picture on the can, I think it may be cow as Uruguay also eats the most beef per person in the world.

Francois is serving sashimi on a generic model boat. How fancy!

I assume this won't be the design for the next Perseus, since it's made of wood rather than superalloys (and also covered in fish).

Is Carlos jealous or uncomfortable with the fact that Max is reviving someone who looks just like him? I wonder if there's any blood relation…

Taiju is tired for what may be the first time ever! Though it could be because he somehow managed to wear out a pickaxe of all things…

Maya is revival #75 according to the bottle Taiju is holding. It also means Taiju returned back to Fort Medusa to mine rather than staying at Isla Martin Garcia.

Communication between Fort Medusa and Isla Martin Garcia is established thanks to the usual radio setup, but with the addition of a Yagi-Uda antenna. This is a directional antenna, so they may be trying to hide from Whyman.

Senku and Chrome simply mark dangerous items with a skull and crossbones. Xeno? He makes the entire thing into the shape, with gas coming out of the eyes.

Can you get any more cartoonishly villainous, Xeno!?

Xeno uses the Mond process to purify nickel.

The toxic gas he mentions is nickel carbonyl, which can be fatal if absorbed through the skin or inhaled. The gas smells musty or sooty, and decomposes to carbon monoxide quickly. Special gas masks are required to block the fumes.

Xeno loves referring to people as the "mindless/ignorant masses". I wonder if his parents were the original "ignorant masses" telling him to stop messing around with dangerous chemicals in the backyard…

I think this rock that Taiju finally manages to break with the help of Maya (and a new pickaxe) is the same one from before, but from a different angle.

A few outfit changes: Suika's lenses are now full circles and not broken, Xeno's zipper is straight rather than zig-zagged and Charlotte has a little skirt to cover herself up better.

The timeline isn't very clear here, but at least 2 weeks pass between Maya and Charlotte's revival and Xeno's discussion with Senku going by moon phase.

Many people have been revived, but because of the location they likely speak Spanish. We know several of the KoS know English and Japanese, and Francois knows French, so who's translating here?

I think it's funny Xeno didn't get a team-up high-5 from Senku even though everyone else does. They may be superallies now but not even Senku wants to go near those claws…

There is no sky, there is only an ugly smog of red and ashen gray. Where once a city might have loomed, it stands now in shambles, a site laid to waste in a manner never before seen. Some buildings yet stand, though the fallen number far greater. Torn infrastructure decorates your sightline in any which direction, sharp edges angry and despondent.

Some of you have dreamt recently of metal beasts-

and some of those feature on the paved streets here, albeit on a smaller scale. Most of them are broken and look to have long since stopped working.

Some of them aimlessly amble on, seeking to fulfill their purpose: to protect, and to kill.

Places of Interest

the apartments - you don’t have the keys to these rooms, but that’s never stopped anyone! upon investigation, one (mostly upright) building may prove fortuitous. Sure there’s a thick layer of dust (?) to clean off of everything, and oh, the odd wall looks like it’s been clean vapourized, but otherwise this looks kind of cozy and you only have to dorm with a couple of your buddies. Just ignore the view outside, is all.

the crater - something happened here. No matter your vantage point, it’s hard to miss the gaping crater - very nearly a valley - in the dead center of the city. One imagines there may have been building here before, but if so, they are no longer. There is nothing here save a yawning emptiness... and perhaps a chance to snipe down some mechanical monsters.

the crane - if you like to climb, you’ll love this. The metal tower stretches so very high into the sky, offering the perfect vantage point of all the desolation below. Well, it would, if the smog weren’t obscuring much of the view. A long pole reaches out from the tower, and a sturdy (?) rope dangles from its end. Oh: and the tower can be made to swivel around. Whee!

NPCs of Note

the Aukes - a large family of rival scavengers who don’t look kindly on your group infringing on their territory. Oddly enough, their garb is familiar to a lot of you: some may pass as Valentian, Magvellian, or even Jugdrali. If approached on the matter, however, they don’t seem to know what you’re talking about. Anyroad, they aren’t outright hostile, but they aren’t warm, either.

the Mechanic - a friendly lad who wanders around with a pouch full of metal bits and bobs and seems to delight in taking apart the machinery on the road. Never know whatchur gonna get, he says! He’ll gladly pass along the art of taking things apart, pointing out what to look for and what to avoid. Doesn’t remember his name.

Tasks

Setting up base camp - every 1 post = 1% of progress, capping at 20% - requires 1 plank of wood, plate of metal, or dormant/live core per post

Scavenging - receive 1 random resource (plank of wood, metal can, or 1d10 tokens) per post -- 1d10 chance of finding odd gadget from same post, where 1&2 = success (ping Key)

Dismantling - receive 1 random resource (plate of metal, strange core [roll 1d2: 1=dormant core, 2=dead core], or 1L fuel) per post -- Warning: 40% chance of injury (-1HP)

Hunting/foraging - receive 1 questionable small game or 1 questionable bundle of herbs per post - alternatively: if you are instead hunting small flying machines, roll 1d20 each post -- if 1-5: target explodes, -1HP -- if 6-16: receive 1 bucket of assorted metal -- if 17-20: receive 1 live core

What to Expect

Unlike recent lore events, Keras Kai Elephas will be mostly in the hands of the players. There will be a series of tasks in need of completing each week, but the players will determine HOW those tasks are completed. Resources will be granted based on post count, word count, number of muses in a single thread, and/or other mechanics, so the focus will be on generating your own content and developing relationships between your muses. However, we do encourage short, meaningful posts. Direct interaction > internal monologue.

A dedicated notetaker (or notetakers) will need to keep notes on what happens in each thread in your team, as well as track whatever counter a specific task requires. New events will happen each week depending on what your team did the previous week, and some tasks may not have immediate pay-offs. Follow your inspiration, but if you have questions about what is or isn’t allowed, feel free to ping a mod.

Lastly, every weekend until the finale, there will be a condensed, two-day mini game that will allow your team to gather a larger number of materials. This is an efficient way to stockpile resources or achieve certain goals, but in order for your muse to enter, they must have written at least two posts that week assisting another muse with a task.

Task threads do not have to be completed by the following week, but will no longer grant resources for posts unless otherwise specified. All members have permission to nudge their teammates to post if they feel like someone is taking more time than they should.

Can I only thread with my teammates?

Any threads taking place within the dream featuring the Ruins can only be written with your teammates.

These aren’t the only threads I can do, right?

Of course not! These are just prompts to help give some ideas of possibilities. You’re always free and encouraged to make up your own threads, and feel free to ping Mod Key to propose a task idea for resources.

How do I claim the resources?

In order to qualify for your earnings, the thread must clearly allude to the listed task and feature the task being completed. Your team’s appointed tracker will be keeping tabs on your totals.

Can I only do one task?

Nope, you can do as many as you’d like with as many different partners as you’d like! You can do the same task with more than one person and still contribute toward the resource goal. Bear in mind, however, that this is a month-long event.

What if my partner leaves or drops a resource gathering thread?

If the dropped thread has at least 2 notes (not counting likes, only reblogs with replies in them) and you have hit at least 400 words on your end, you may still claim the resources. This only applies in the event your partner drops out completely.

LISTEN UP, LAW STUDENTS

Hi Lawblrs!

It feels like just yesterday I was applying for law school summer jobs, and now as a brand new baby lawyer I’ve been gifted the burden privilege of culling through hundreds of summer student application packages trying to find the perfect 2L summer student candidate.

As such, I have a few pieces of job-hunting advice I’d like to impart to all lawblrs so that none of your resumes will be thrown in the shredder nearly as quickly as half of these applications were.

SO SIT YOUR BUTTS DOWN BECAUSE I’M GONNA LEARN YOU A THING.

1. ARE COVER LETTERS MANDATORY?

I don’t care if the job posting doesn’t specify that you need to provide a cover letter. You’re applying for a job. You have 6-7 years of post-secondary education. You are one of the most highly educated minds of your generation - and so is everyone else applying for this job.

If you do not include a cover letter, and everyone else does, you are at a disadvantage. Let me tell you - no cover letter? No job. Done. I won’t even read the resume. Not including a cover letter shows a serious lack of judgment, and judgment is something that is extremely necessary for a lawyer to have.

2. SHOULD I PROOFREAD MY APPLICATION?

Yes. Yes you should do that. I just threw out five applications (5!!) because they were addressed and directed at the wrong employer. Don’t be one of those five people. Be one of the other 95 people who benefit from those 5 people’s misfortune.

3. SHOULD I REACH OUT TO SOMEONE AT THE FIRM?

There are pros and cons to this. If you reach out to the right person, and you make a good impression, and that person ends up having a say - you’re in the green. But if you’re going to do this, for the love of Lanta please realize that you’re attracting attention to yourself - positive or negatively. So don’t make an appointment to speak with a lawyer and then not phone in on time. Don’t be rude, don’t be impatient, and keep in mind that my time is literally worth more than yours and who knows - the person you’re speaking to might end up being the person making the final call on your application.
