Bit of background: there is a boy who has, for an unknown reason, singled me out to be his academic rival since 4th grade. (Im in a rural area so our elementary through high school is combined). I have never done anything to this boy.
What gets on my nerves the most is that he’s rich. Very rich. His parents are both deans of a college in our area that basically everyone around goes to except the special ones who go on to state universities. He literally has access to professional tudors day and night. He had the whole campus library. They basically run both the school and the college. I have a 100 in chemistry, yet HE’S chosen for the once-in-a-year competition at the college to win money for scholarships?? He doesn’t need it. He’s rich. He could’ve went anyway without the teacher picking him (he went without a teaching picking him LAST YEAR). But you know who could really use that scholarship money?? Me, the daughter of two farmers trying to make ends meet for the time being. But nooo - their excuse is probably that I “missed too much school” because I recently had even MORE medical trauma. If anything, going to school with panic attacks and still getting a 100 probably qualifies me more. He’s been turning down tudors while I’ve been watching Khan Academy since 5th grade

I'm learning elementary school arithmetic on Khan Academy to refresh myself after a decade outside of school. While it feels slightly embarrassing, the worst part is how this feels EXACTLY like doing video game puzzles. Either game devs think this poorly of us or they know that our ultimate adult fantasy is to go back to elementary school, ace every test and impress our hot teacher.

Its’s absolutely insane to me that there is quality educational content out there that is 100% free for the viewer on something as accessible as YouTube. Channels like SciShow, Crash Course, ASAP Science, Khan Academy, TED (and all its associated channels), etc are paving the way for the future of education. For centuries, academic knowledge was only available to the elite, people who could shell out tons and tons of money every year, and largely, it still is. But channels like this, just giving away free content is, or at least can be, the future. Just people helping other people better themselves, and that is beautiful. In a world where it seems that everything is going downhill, this makes me so incredibly happy.

i've been doing two Coursera courses and everytime i'm on the homepage of the app, i see so many more courses i'd love to do and have to stop myself because i know i wouldn't be able to manage more before i complete my in progress ones.
So if you have even a few hours of free time every week, sign up for a course. Because a) there's just so many that it is not possible you won't find courses of your interest and b)you can access the content for free but if you want the certificate and don't want to pay, apply for financial aid, it's not difficult to get just show genuine interest in the course content.
I also got to know today that duolingo is free, so that's that.
I promise there's so much to learn and so many free resources for those who genuinely want to.
