Smoke from Canada
Please stay inside if you are sensitive to smoke
check your area for air quality:
PLEASE REBLOG AND SHARE MORE TIPS
I’m actively updating as of Wednesday Jun 7, 2023. Please check your local news stations and weather apps for information on your area.
Outside
If you have to go outside please wear a mask, have lots of sunscreen and drink water when available/needed. Stay in shade when walking. Wear light colors outside, avoid dark colors. Cloth Masks are cool but paint/filter masks are your best friend. If you have a inhaler just bring it with you everywhere! Inside
When inside don’t open windows and keep curtain closed to expel heat. Sandwiches and fruit are your friend. Cooking is far too hot. If you are about to run out of water fill tub with cold water and pray you have a good drain. Basements are your friend. DRINK WATER NOT SODA OR SPORTS DRINKS! Don’t use drier, use a clothes line if possible
Extra
if you are looking for shelter, Public libraries, coffee shops, grocery stores, anywhere thats air conditioned. Take anything you need but be SAFE
Did I mention water? Gatorade is fun but don’t drink caffeine.
If there’s no smoke in your area and you just need to cool down, open your window at night/early morning
|| Take it easy. No, easier than that. Aside from the mental toll the smoke and horrible weird light and the creepy red sun and the burning smell take on you, your body is just working way harder to do everything it normally does. You will be exhausted, you will be distracted, you will have headaches and you will struggle with basic tasks like "walking up stairs." Do not try to power through it. Cancel plans, reschedule appointments, do fewer errands or consolidate them into one trip.
Treat yourself like you have a cold. Plenty of fluids, stopping when you're tired, cough drops and eye drops for the painful throat and eyes, inhalers if you have one.
Spend as little time outside as you possibly can. This includes your pets. Do not open your windows, do not open your screen door, do not run your AC (this is where some of the above advice for hot weather will come in handy.)
If you have to go outside, wear an N95 or KN95 mask. Make sure it's well-fitted around your face. You're not trying to keep out the smoke, but the PM2.5 (particulate matter 2.5 microns or smaller.) That's the stuff that causes cancer. If you have a fan with a HEPA filter, blast it all the time. If you don't have one go look at diy air filter link below, ask a mutual aid center if you cannot come into contact with these materials. || These tips are from them, a few links below are from them too so go give them some love. https://www.tumblr.com/salteywater

some friendly advice as new areas of the country start having long-term wildfire smoke problems:
Don’t do extended exercise outside. If possible, don’t do extended work outside.
Shower once you’re back inside to wash the particles off your skin/hair. This helps to keep you from inhaling it when out of the smoke.
Hot showers and steam help sooth inflammatory airways (nose/throat)
Wear an N95 mask when outside for extended periods to help keep from inhaling smoke. Look at what size particles and how much the mask will protect against (ie 95% vs 99%).
Get an air filter for your office/room/house. They’re in the $50 range online (price May vary in person). If you can’t get one, look into how to make a Corsi-Rosenthal box (box fan, two air filter frames and lots of duct tape).
If you have an A/C (window or central air), turn the fan from “auto” to “on”. This will make sure your air is still being filtered even when the cooling part of the system is not on.
Drink water. (I mean you should try to do this anyways)
Important to note: you may feel side effects slower than others. You may feel them quicker than others. Sore throat, sinus infection, upper respiratory infection, itchy eyes, pink eye, exhaustion, difficulty breathing— these are all common side effects of prolonged smoke exposure.
The dangerous part is that in areas of high concentration, the particles are small enough to be absorbed into your bloodstream. So please, do what you can to help protect yourself and friends/family. Even when you aren’t feeling it, it’s affecting you.

A week after the festival of Diwali - Gurgaon, the millennium city of India- dusty, smoky and sadly not fit for breathing !! The honking of traffic on the busy roads doesn’t stop, and this still doesn’t qualify as an emergency!
The AQI cannot measure beyond 500, so wonder what the actual AQI is. We have forgotten how to live !!

Recently, the Delhi government has been considering artificial rain through cloud seeding as a measure to combat escalating pollution levels in the city.
IIT-Kanpur has conducted pilot projects during monsoon months, and the focus is now on winter conditions.
A minimum requirement of 40% cloud and moisture is necessary for cloud seeding.
The potentially favorable conditions for artificial rain are projected on November 20 and 21, 2023.
The project involves using silver iodide and other components for cloud seeding via aircraft.
The effectiveness of artificial rain in reducing pollution levels depends on factors like moisture and rainfall.

Fresh air and water are essential for life and overall well-being. Here are a few reasons why they are considered everything:
Survival: Humans and all living organisms need clean air and water to survive. Fresh air provides oxygen that is vital for respiration, while clean water is necessary for hydration and maintaining bodily functions.
Health: Breathing polluted air can have severe health consequences, including respiratory diseases, allergies, and even cancer. Similarly, contaminated water can lead to waterborne diseases such as cholera, dysentery, and hepatitis. Fresh air and clean water contribute to good health and prevent illnesses.
Environmental balance: Fresh air is crucial for maintaining a healthy ecosystem. It helps in the process of photosynthesis, allowing plants to produce oxygen and absorb carbon dioxide. Clean water supports aquatic life, including fish, plants, and other organisms, creating a balanced ecosystem.
Mental well-being: Spending time in nature, breathing fresh air, and being near clean water has been shown to have positive effects on mental health. It can reduce stress, improve mood, enhance cognitive function, and increase overall happiness.
Sustainability: Access to fresh air and clean water is essential for the sustainable development of communities and societies. It ensures the availability of resources for future generations and supports various economic activities such as agriculture, industry, and tourism.
In summary, fresh air and water are everything because they are vital for survival, health, environmental balance, mental well-being, and sustainability.

Photos me and my field group took when we where carrying out an investigation into how air pollution effects the growth, type and coverage of lichen on trees in different areas
We carried out this experiment in two locations with various levels of air pollutants
(Please keep in mind I was in my foundation year, had no clue what I was doing and I’ve lost my notes so am doing this PURELY from memory.)
Hypothesis
We expected to see more moss in the park by the river compared to the park in the housing estate due to the latter being closer to the roads and shops
A park in the city centre
Position of the tree
Middle of the park
Close to and facing a river
Notable environmental observations
Smell of wild garlic in the air
Visible litter in river (an indication that this is an frequently visited area)
What is in the vicinity of the tree
Other trees
A foot path
Findings
Small patches of bushy green moss across the surface of the tree we chose to observe. This indicates that sulphur dioxide levels are low
Tumblr media
Small park in the centre of a housing estate
Position of the tree
At the edge of the “park” Facing east towards houses and the road
Notable environmental observations
Excessive level of traffic
Up the road there’s a Car garage
Increased levels of foot traffic both within and outside of the “park” . Due to the park being surrounded by houses
What is the vicinity of the tree
Other trees
Benches
Roads
Houses
A car garage
Findings
There was no evidence of lichen on the two trees that we had chosen to observe. But that can not be said for all of the trees in the area. This indicates that there’s high levels of sulphur dioxide
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Final conclusions
We seem to have been correct in our assumption that there would be more air pollution in a more industrialised/ populated areas
Improvements for next time
Don’t Loose notes so it’s easier to write about
Make a note about how much of the tree the lichen covers
Make more detailed notes about the type of lichen that I on the tree
