Not sure if anybody who reads my Atypical fanfiction "We're The New Face of Failure" follows my Tumblr, but just a short update: I've been busy with too much life and work stuff that I literally haven't been able to find time to write the chapter.

Too many bad or stressful things, one after another, happened and I've been unable to concentrate on anything more than the essential writing I need to do right now (thesis, school, work). I'm trying my best to carve out time, but it doesn't seem to be happening for me.

So sorry! If it's any consolation, the parts of the next chapter I have written are cute fluff, so at least that'll be in the docket for the people still reading.

The cool thing about writing something completely without peer review like fanfiction and also writing many hundreds of thousands of words of it is I have no idea what turns-of-phrase I have accidentally completely invented. I have no editor to tell me "Chrissy literally no one has ever said these words together."

And I'm positive these exist in my writing because there's creativity and metaphor and [insert a bunch of literary devices] in writing that often call for using words in atypical but evocative ways. Narrative style already goads you to walk close to the cliff and stretch beyond the literal meaning of what you're saying because the human brain delights in a certain amount of poetic lenience and I'm positive, I'm positive I've tumbled over that cliff. Invented some turn of phrase which felt right at the time and then retroactively convinced myself that was a thing people say because I kept on using it.

And I think about this most of all when readers have asked permission to translate my writing (always yes!) because I always imagine them stumbling on such a phrase and going "ah hmm, this one is strange. let me look into what this could mean so I can find the right translation for it" and it's all bullshit. pure bullshit. I'm sorry for the words I've said that had the right vibes in my own brain and yet mean literally nothing. It will happen again.

Oh my goodness! 😳 Thank you so much, this is such an incredibly nice thing to say!!! 🥺🥺🥺💙💙💙 I have to admit, especially since I started writing myself, I have not been reading as much as I should, or would like to, and there are many amazing stories out there I haven't managed to get to yet. But I will do my best! 💪

First of all, I saw that you just reblogged this, but I just can't not include @nicoroni's home is where the heart is (and my heart beats in your chest). (Barnaby/Kotetsu, M, 8K) What initially seems like a relatively light-hearted sequence of increasingly-funny ways Barnaby tries to confess to Kotetsu will, before it's done, grab your heart and squeeze and never, ever let go. This will live rent-free in my head forever.

Then we have My Bunny Valentine by @exquisitefrogprince (Barnaby/Kotetsu, T, 10K) which utterly captivated me and made me shake with the tension and the emotion, and has both an incredibly beautiful, almost ethereal interlude featuring Nathan and a gorgeous, precious, spun-sugar ending.

your eyes become a paradise by @hearjessroar (Barnaby/Kotetsu, T, 2K) manages to fit in such a small space an amazing, very human study of Kotetsu, and Barnaby, and Barnaby through Kotetsu's eyes, and Kotetsu reflected in Barnaby's eyes; and a small, but fundamental brave leap into a new, soft beginning for them together.

Some Things Are Worth the Wait by @mad-madam-m (Barnaby/Kotetsu, T, 2K + 1K) is a small series filled with soft, quiet love, respect, and the importance to both take some first steps, and wait patiently at the end of the path for what is most precious to come to you.

Now, in case you meant, as I hope, Taibani-as-in-the-fandom, and not just as the pairing... *rubs hands in glee*

First, a small detour into GoldenRose land:

The Nearness of You by @mad-madam-m (Ryan/Karina, T, 2K) is funny and adorable and features Karina being absolutely done, Ryan being a hopeless giant muffin, and a kick-ass tiny old lady. What more could you want?

Good Golly Miss Molly by @captaindeadpoet (Ryan/Karina, T, 9K) has Karina falling into domesticity, co-parenting Molly, and love with Ryan, in approximately but possibly not quite that order. It also contains one of my favorite atypical declarations of love.

And finally, because I always like to leave my favorite treat for last... FireSky, my absolute most beloved! ❤️💜

My Valentine, my demise by @gusutianzixiao (Keith/Nathan, T, 2K) pulled at my heart so freaking hard and I could not get enough. Nathan hides away from Keith on Valentine's Day to avoid having her heart broken. But of course her heart, instead of getting hurt, shows up on her doorstep, as giving and trusting and forgiving and caring as he ever is.

Hindsight is 20/20 by @saltedpin and Apathy (Keith/Nathan, T, 12K) features, uh... a Sky High photo shoot gone wrong. Very wrong. Or very, very right, depending on your, erm, perspective. And how much you enjoy what probably has to be one of Nathan's top 3 sights in the entire world. In any case, this is hilarious, but also tender and bold and with both Keith and Nathan being the absolute most.

second crack by @seaofolives (Keith/Nathan, T, 24K) is an actual FireSky coffee shop AU and if that isn't enough to entice you, it is also a fantastic, gripping view into heartbreak and slowly, consciously, gradually healing from it, with the help of a soft, bright hope for something new and fresh and absolutely beautiful, with someone who finally, unexpectedly fully gets you.

As someone who ships leon and ashley and enjoys reading/consuming taboo topics and relationships in fiction including incestuous ones, it's so funny to me that I don't see eagleone that way at ALL. theyre one of the relationships i purely enjoy for being a cute wholesome romance and who i want to see thriving and happy (albeit i enjoy the tragic love angle too--) and yet they have a sizable age difference and a "power dynamic" (??????) so it's a "proship"... honestly outside of them both having a daddy kink i really dont want to see that with them!!! Its just not what I'm here for. Im here for that in OTHER ships and this was supposed to be my one good one and this is what happens. Lol.

As such I try to just not care when people accuse eagleone shippers of being weird because Im like... well I suppose I AM...... but it is really unfair for the majority of vanilla ones. Honestly I don't think the antis are secret shippers or secret incestuous shippers (...okay maybe like one or two--) I think they just have a "NOTP" or are scared of how much they relate to ashley as you say and are just making excuses for why they hate seeing fanart of them and blocking people who ship them. I notice this in other fandoms where people will say two characters are "sibling coded" and its just their way of saying they don't ship them. It's really weird frankly and they're basically ignoring canon to write worse fanfiction but that's just how it is these days.

personally, it actually blows me away that people think of Leon and Ashley as being "age gap" at all.

in modern day 2023, Leon is 46. Ashley is 39.

that feels really fucking normal to me in terms of ages for a couple LMAO if any of these dumbasses met a couple like that irl out in the wild today, no one would bat an eye. but that would require these people actually leaving the house, so.

the whole "power imbalance" thing is completely disingenuous, too, because people only look at it in the context of the events of the actual game and then pretend like that's going to be the norm for them forever and not, you know, a very unique, atypical, and extreme situation they're in.

but if anyone were to think about it a little bit as opposed to not at all, they'd realize that their power dynamic would shift once they got home, and then shift again once Ashley's dad is out of office -- and when the power dynamic is constantly changing, that's not exactly imbalanced, is it?

Leon has all of the power during the events of RE4make, and Ashley is wholly dependent on him. yes. that's true.

but once they're out of that combat situation and they're back home in DC, Ashley has literally all of the power in the world over him. she outranks him socially, and she theoretically has the power to make his life complete hell in terms of his career if she were to whisper in her dad's ear the right way.

but the title of "president" is a very temporary one, and once those very short few years are over...? neither Ashley nor Leon are in a position to hold any power over each other at all anymore. they just become two regular-ass people trying to fit into each other's lives.

the whole idea behind "Ashley is completely dependent on Leon in RE4make, which means she will always be completely dependent on him" isn't just based on a faulty premise -- it's also really sexist and gross and reduces Ashley to something less than human, because it assumes that she's incapable of autonomous thought.

and it's really funny how it's only the people who hate the ship that actually are problematic in their thought process. they project their internalized misogyny and sexual insecurities onto us.

I am pretty much as deep in the middle of eagleone fandom as a person can possibly be, and I have never known a single one of you fuckers to ship this ship because you have an age gap kink or because you get off on the power dynamics. the only time power dynamics get brought up is when we make knight/queen comparisons -- which actually gives Ashley the greater portion of power.

I mean, yeah, there is the whole thing where a lot of the fandom also is of a mind that there are some daddy issue kinks at play in the ship, but --

I don't wanna hear shit from people about us enjoying daddy kink between Leon and Ashley when literally the entire fucking RE fandom is out here posting pics of shirtless Leon mods and writing the word "DADDY" in giant fucking text at the bottom of the post. goddamn hypocrites.

hello! this is so so nice, thank you!!! I am legit HONORED that you spend so much time with Atypical's podcasts, I could never fully express how much that means to me!!!

I am able to read fanfiction of TBS now! for those of you who are new to this tumblr/me, I - like most other writers - have a policy that I cannot read any fanfiction while I'm currently working on something. this is for a bunch of reasons, mostly boring legal ones, but I ended TBS some time ago! there's also the hope of TV, but that would be an adaptation, so feels a little different.

that said....I actually haven't started reading any fanfiction yet, even now, years later. it isn't because I don't want to - during the making of the show, I waited for this day because it was sO cool to me that people were writing it at all! but there's two factors that have kept me from it so far:

a) after spending so much time with these characters over the last eight years, I'm a bit like....I need a break lol. these characters have been talking in my head every day for nearly a decade and while I certainly have fandoms for which that's true, the feeling is different for me when I've created the characters.

b) I have yet to get good at the "reading fic about characters played by people I know" thing. it's funny, I saw a chart on here the other day of audio drama fanfic numbers and Wolf 359 is still so high up (as it should be) and I remembered that that's one of the few ADs I read fic for when I got into the show (*cough* hera/eiffel *cough*) and then, you know, I became very good friends with Zach Valenti (I love Michaela too, we've just never actually met in person!) and suddenly couldn't read those fics anymore. this also happened more recently with a horror show I write starring a certain tumblr favorite. I don't know why I have this block - when I'm reading fic, I am never thinking of the actor, sometimes the versions of the characters in my head even look or sound a little different, but I guess when that actor is a real person in my life, it's even harder. I'm sure eventually that feeling will go away!

I have a slight AU idea germinating in my head where Izzie ends up going to Newton instead and finding herself competing with Casey, kinda rivals to lovers type of thing, but I can’t work on it because I can’t work on anything creative with the bad month I’m having. 

Also been trying to work on my main Cazzie fic, but everything’s too much, too personal, and I can’t get the parts to work together like they’re supposed to. It’s annoying when this fucking happens.

I haven't been feeling especially cogent of late, so it's nice to know something I waffled resonates, or indeed makes vague sense firstly <3 and I agree with you, or me, or both -- I'm generally sooo happy to suspend my disbelief in fiction re plot (and am a big fan of high jinks!). I'm not sweating the deets if the payoff is worth it, and that goes extra much re ff.

Whereas sacrificing characterisation, especially in ff, can make me feel very :/ :/ :/ :/ yknow. I'm actually reasonably willing to suspend my disbelief re it too if that's set up well eg 'this is a story set several years in the future where theyve sorted a lot of their issues out offscreen' or 'this is an au where the characters have much better communication skills cos I the author find that concept interesting'. or 😋gimme the plot somehow achieving that -- yea they're pumped full of truth serum! Stuck together in hiding for ages till they've nothing left to do but snap at each other! Forced by a third party to go to counselling bc their bs is pissing everyone else off! Ofc characterisation isn't static -- so much of the delight of stories can be in characters finally learning to change or make different decisions to usual, or indeed in them seeing each other in atypical situations which shake them out of established patterns of behaviour, but that's precisely why I typically want to see or at least understand some of that journey!

Obvi there's going to be subjectivity (and indeed canon inconsistencies!) with regards to characterisation, and I appreciate that not everyone wants the same thing from stories generally (and poss especially from ff, which can often be abt attempting to ~fix the source material) but ultimately if the ff characters have little resemblance beyond name and appearance to the canon ones I find it difficult to see the appeal. For me, the joy of ff, and espec the ~fixing approach, lies in honouring those characters. Espec cos it does feel that the established playgroundness of ff/fandom more generally/arguably the written medium's freedom vs the need to show things in visual media allows for frankly just FUN handwaving re plot beats! Like I will happily take a single sentence (or indeed a metatextual note!) to explain where we're at or how we got there, it doesn't need to be overdeveloped that's fine, I'm happy to strap in and indulge! But if it feels like the author just doesn't like the canon character(s) and wishes them to be entirely different, eh, not for me I guess :/
